Birgit Nilsson did not have to retire in 1984 with this performance of hers. She retained her amazing voice even after her retirement from opera. I wish she had had a second thought about her retirement and made an announcement to come back to the Met as a Wagnerian diva after this occasion. She could have been active as an opera singer until her dying day.

Once you listen to a piece sung by Kathleen Ferrier you are spoilt forever. For example, I have heard these Messiah arias sung by scores of Altos of all sorts: mezzos, contraltos, countertenors... and some do a fairly good job of them. But no sir, they are not HER.

Rossi-Lemeni was a great singer, but not really "a real bass" in the sense that he often had trouble with the lowest notes of the roles he sang and often just skipped them. He himself even said that his vocal range was between bass and baritone.

When I was young, singers mostly just stood about making mellifluous noises. It could turn a drama into a borefest. Tito Gobbi and Maria Callas were the pioneers who showed that opera as complete theatre is absolutely stunning. Gobbi used conventional acting technique, Callas depended more on vocality. But the most truly amazing singer-actor I have come across is the countertenor Christopher Robson, who was still performing when his voice declined, but whose identification with a role can be ranked with the very best acting in the world.

Acting is what makes the greats great. It's not just a voice, although that too is very special.

Of these three only Callas was a fully accomplished actor.

Acting is necessary for singers in the first place because having a total understanding of what their piece means and acting consequently helps them to find the perfect way to deliver the singing.

Speaking of the greats in the past, some voices are perfect but just don't move me. Some singers may have faults but they give me emotion being great actors and giving great interpretations. Today I feel that the level is quite low, regarding both tecnics and acting.

Necessary & needs are evolutionary..., no one would doubt. What one doubts is where indulging in takes us to, lead us into. 🤫

Just don't get caught in camera closeups when you are acting to reach the last row in the balcony! (Ditto...Stage makeup!!!)

Opera is dead !!!! Honestly, it's hard to understand how they can focus on acting when they can't even sing a score properly. 💀

Joan Sutherland was not the worlds greatest actress, but she never failed to thrill. Teresa Stratas, though not at that level vocally, is a great actress who has never failed to move me to tears. I'm incredibly grateful to have experienced both artists. To have a Callas or a Corelli (who have both amazing acting and singing techniques) is a rare phenomena that gives all artists something to strive for.

Fedora was unstoppable. Such clear and strong sounds.
