Agree, disagree? I think the 50mm f1.8 or f2 for any system is the best wedding photography lens to get started with. Focal info here: www.bookfocal.com/taylor-jackson My presets and courses here: www.taylorjacksoncourses.com/members
Agree - I launched my career in photography in the mid 90’s with an Nikon FM2 body and Nikkor 50mm 1.8 AI-S, and had used that combo for ten years alongside my autofocus Nikon and medium format bodies until I jumped to the Canon 5d and EF mount. Since I was able to match my film stocks across brands and bodies, it was really all about the focal length and rendering of the lenses instead of the branded boxes they were mounted to, or the electronics and metering involved. 50mm pancakes are timeless for their utility and the ubiquitous 35mm format embodiment for each camera line is simple, sharp, bright and cheap. All the things a beginning photog needs but may not have a large budget for. Plus it really is the perfect focal length if you aren’t limited by space since it matches the attention focus within your natural field of view. Its crazy how often I turned to my humble Nikon when I urgently needed a reliable shot (eg where I was caught in the middle of reloading my medium backs or 35mn rolls or out of battery power, or needed the wider aperture than my 2.8 zooms). With the exposure latitude of Portra 400NC, I simply preset my mechanical shutter to 1/60 or 1/90, aperture between 2.8 and 5.6, set my rough focus on the split fresnel screen and pull the trigger. All in about a second or two from raising my camera to my eye, with zero dependence on batteries for metering, focus or motor drive, and secure in the knowledge that I got the shot. Starting with a 50 prime has shaped the way I shoot, and couldn’t imagine starting with a zoom since i would have missed out on engaging my feet, creative brain and social skills. Paired with a 16-35 zoom or a prime within that range, it may be all you need since you can usually get closer to your subjects, but may not be able to get further back.
It blows my mind to think I found Taylor Jackson several years ago for a gambling slot machine video he did. From that day, I have been Taylor hooked. You have helped our photography career grow throughout these years, I love your humor and your ability to attempt and try any idea that pops into your mind and truly make it your own. Thank you for all you have done for your community!
I shot my first wedding with only the RF 50mm F1.8 on an RP and my experienced second shooter had the EF24-70mm f2.8. I feel like the 50mm can get you most of the wedding but wouldn't do it without a second shooter on a different lens.
After 12 years and hundreds of weddings, we finally shot our first wedding with NO zooms. Just 24, 50 and 85mm primes. Dual cameras. 24 on one hand and 50/85 on the other. Of course the majority of images were made on the 50. Images are great, and so is my back.
For a long time, I used three bodies with 24/1.8, 35/1.4 and 85/1.4. With high-rez bodies, Crop Mode also gave me 52mm and 130mm. Now I go 24/1.8, 85/1.4 or 135/1.8 and 35-150/2.0-2.8. The two-stop advantage over the 35-150 makes the 85/1.4 a must-have.
I think your humor in all of these videos is very underrated. I really enjoy it. Find myself actually laughing out loud, even with this on in the background.
Room filled with mind shrapnel, just stuck my grandma's 50 1.4 from the 70's inverted on my Z6 to do macro. SOO cool! cheers! was about to buy a macro lense 5 min ago on MPB i swear!
I used to shoot entire weddings on a D700 and 50 1.4G back in like 2013. I'd always have a wider and tighter lens in my bag (my go to has been the 28, 50 (currently 58) and 85 for the last ten years. Other lenses sort of come and go, but that has been my bread and butter combo for most my career, with the 50 doing 90% of the work, sometimes 100%.
GOD THIS VIDEO WAS HILARIOUS. haven't watched in a while because I've been feeling hella uninspired because I've had 0 work. but I'm feeling it lately again and I've missed your videos
I shot weddings for 3 years with only the EF 35 1.4….. It really is whatever you want to do. Once you find your style game over. I just bought the R3 and the 24-105 2.8 we’ll see if this is the ultimate combo or if I run back to primes!!!!
I'm new to photography os there any tips or videos yall can point me too so I can learn all that I need before purchasing a camera or lens? Pleaseee and THANK YOU
Yes, I have used a 50mm f1.4 Super Takumar on my Pentax Spotmatic film camera in the 60's and 70's for entire weddings. The rings on the bouquet shot was at minimum focus distance of 13 inches with off camera flash.
I considered revoking my “like” because I didn’t want to contribute to the 1000+ likes and risk you never talking about Britney Spears’ Crossroads again. This video was great, but Britney Spears’ Crossroads was definitely the star. My biggest take away is that more videos universally need to include mention of Britney Spears’ 2002 film Crossroads. It’s what the world needs right now.
hey taylor great video but why didnt you just go Dx mode when it came to the close ups when the groom kissed the bride you would of got some closer pull while still technically using the 50 still.
I have a macro lens but if I wanted to do that ring shot with a 50mm 1.8 or something, would 24 MP be good enough to crop in? I’m rocking the Nikon Z6.
Hi Taylor, thanks for grt video...what would you say would be the best for 60D budget lenses for all rounder...weddings, families, etc? Will really appreciate your help...not getting much help on this question😅
most of my weddings require a 28 or 24 at some point, pretty much just for bridesmaids getting ready or a tight space with the whole party or family. Otherwise I do use a 50 just about the whole time. Perfect balance of natural to flattering for me. Also LR "enhance" tool has changed everything. My R6 is now 40mp lol! Don't need macro or 85 really. If you need 200mm well you still need that.
Story Time: I put my gear in a corner and the wedding venue moved it behind the DJ table. I couldnt access my bag during speeches, so I had to use the 50 for the rest of the night. I cropped in, and it worked fine! Fantastic lens and super multipurpose.
I've shot a few weddings years ago with my trusty D7000, together with the 17-50/2.8 A16N Tamron (without BiM). The AF was under all circumstances way fast enough. You don't need a 36x24mm setup DSLR or nowadays -Mirrorless (DSLM) for that. With a prime faster than F2.8, one would have more shallow DoF of course, but it was up to the task. And most FF Zooms are usually 24-70/2.8 anyway. I've the older 28-70/2.8 L and 28-70/2.8 IF ED Nikkor for those setups.
im using the canon m50 mark ii as my B cam, can you help me with the settings? how do we set up the b cam for weddings is it just manual focus for the ceremony only ? im a solo shooter so im worried it will go out of focus while im away.
This is very helpful. Some old friends are getting married next week and they've asked me to take photos. I'm really an enthusiastic amateur landscape photographer so I'm way out of depth! I thought I would stick to one lens on my Nikon Z7 and take the 24 to 200 with my old Nikon 3300 DSL as backup. Can anybody tell me if I'm heading in the right direction? Great video. Wish me luck....Many thanks!
I’ve actually done two backyard weddings with just a fifty. For one of them, it was a last minute wedding and my buddy was borrowing the rest of my gear, I was craving the 85 the entire time though. And the other the lenses were on other cameras for video.
I have using single nifty fifty on my canon 1000d for wedding, and 50 1.4 on my 5d mark2 later and the result is amazing. But it found its limit when taking family picture in small room.
This is a good move honestly. I used to use a 35/85 combo but felt like the 85 was too long and the 35 wasn’t wide enough. For the last few years I’ve been almost 100% 24/50 primes and A) they work better for my brain and the overall versatility needed on the wedding day and B) I definitely think my photos look different than most other people in my market, particularly because of the 24. Glad to meet another 24+50 fan! :)
Lol. On its ways to 1000 likes. I really enjoyed the photography component, but also surprisingly enjoyed waiting for the next Crossroads reference. Please, keep the humour.
Tempting mw now. I have a wedding to shoot in September and my main lens choice in a Tamron 90 f2.8 macro. I was thinking Nikon 24-120 f4 to go wide with adjustment but that 50 1.4 G may find a spot.
This was hysterical, Taylor. Gonna try to do weddings and that package is definitely teasing me. 50mm for an entire day? I don’t know about all day but it was worth the video idea, for sure. Just got the RF 24-70 and that’s gonna be my workhorse for a while. FREE BRITNEY!
I am surprised most wedding photographers never mention or consider macro tubes. Seems like a cost effective solution for taking a couple of ringshots opposed to a dedicated macro lens.
Excellent video - way back in the day a favorite camera for wedding shooters was the Rolleiflex TLR with a fixed 80mm lens (roughly the same field of view as 50mm on a full frame camera of today) - So it is certainly possible. I haven't done any wedding photography in decades and now just shoot for my own enjoyment - but my experience even today is that keeping equipment simpler often leads to better results and less time and stress worrying about carrying around multiple lenses. Your comment regarding the close focusing capability in situations like ring shots can be helped along with either an extension tube or even a diopter. I have both for a number of my lenses and cameras and at least in terms of center sharpness I can get excellent results - the edges get very slightly softer - especially with the diopter filter (I use a +3) but whenever I am out and about shooting photos I always have at least that filter in a pocket in case I need it.
I shot most of my wedding swith only 50 mm ❤ Given the only other lens I own is a 35mm DX, it's only reasonable 😂 I only use the 35mm if I really need to (not enough space to move away for the group shots). I'm looking forward to buying the 24mm sometime this summer, and with time, either he 105 or 135, but I know I will still mostly use the 50mm
Until this past june, i only shot 35mm 1.8 DX. The reason moved to canon was video advantages and the color science on the skintone Otherwise i will still use it here and there.
Actually most of my weddings a few years ago were shot on a d700 and a 50 1.8D, great shots, the bokeh wasn't as creamy because of it only had 7 blades, but it got the job done, also quite good for low light, when i had to photograph in churches at weddings (romanian traditions lol) i could get good exposures at 1/250 and 1000 iso, always shot wide open tho its not the sharpest lens
I think zooms are better. We all know that special moment we got at a wedding. I get more of them using zooms. The Canon RF28-70 f2 is now my go to lens with 70-200 on the other body or EF135 f2. I like the versatility because I don’t like to move around much during the ceremony. For the reception you have more freedom of movement so the fast primes are great.
I think shooting a wedding with one lens would be an injustice to the customer. I want my photos to pop. But after they look at a dozen, the pop is gone the shots have to much similarity. 24-70 2.8 35 prime 85 prime and 70-200 2.8. On two cameras. D700 and D4s
While you could shoot a wedding with only a 50mm, why would anyone do it? Sure with 2 cameras one could use 50mm and the second a telephoto. I could do a whole wedding with a 24-70mm f2.8 and I have done so for short weddings, however for long all day weddings I use 3 lenses.
Agree, disagree? I think the 50mm f1.8 or f2 for any system is the best wedding photography lens to get started with.

Ive been using my 50mm for almost 3 yrs that lens is gold

I once shot an entire wedding on a Canon SL1 and a nifty fifty with a broken autofocus.
Then I woke up and realized it was just a nightmare.
This was so helpful! Thank you! I have a 50 mm 1.4, and a 70-200 mm 2.8 so I think I’m set for my next wedding

@@TaylorJacksonPhoto yolo 😆 hey at least you said it.
I didn’t even think of a filter. That would be a very easy solution. Hah my next challenge should be a TLR at a wedding day. Spoiler: I’d fail haha
You buy it too look cool, I love it
Please tell me I look cool
I love using the 50mm but when I need a wide-angle shot, I just do a pano shot.
Every time I watch these videos, I think of the e*TRADE baby.
I want both the 50mm & curly fries!
I shot most of my wedding swith only 50 mm ❤ Given the only other lens I own is a 35mm DX, it's only reasonable 😂
I only use the 35mm if I really need to (not enough space to move away for the group shots). I'm looking forward to buying the 24mm sometime this summer, and with time, either he 105 or 135, but I know I will still mostly use the 50mm
Until this past june, i only shot 35mm 1.8 DX. The reason moved to canon was video advantages and the color science on the skintone
Otherwise i will still use it here and there.

Great video
I don't have a 50mm and don't plan on buying one. I'm sticking with the 35mm, 85mm and 135mm combo, they are my miracle workers.
You can add a 14mm prime for ultra wide shoots too!👌
@@doubleface4137 I got one, but it’s too wide for my liking and I’m contemplating replacing it with 18 or 20mm
Hey Taylor! Just finding you now on youtube. Thanks for the vids. Do you explain your auto focusing modes/methods for weddings? Thanks
I’m just a full auto servo/face detect all day human now with the R6 and R3. I’ll do a more in depth video before the end of June though!
@TaylorJacksonPhoto ❤
Omg I love your math 😂
I think zooms are better. We all know that special moment we got at a wedding. I get more of them using zooms. The Canon RF28-70 f2 is now my go to lens with 70-200 on the other body or EF135 f2. I like the versatility because I don’t like to move around much during the ceremony. For the reception you have more freedom of movement so the fast primes are great.
Taylor what you know about 360 no scopes🤔😑
It's a key element to becoming a wedding photographer
You have funny sense of humour. haha
Im a real estate photographer that somehow ended up photographing a wedding and I had my 12-24 f4.0 lens, my nifty fifty and a dream 😂
Did you stay at 1.2 or did you change it up a bit occasionally?
I’m pretty much always wide open. For venue exteriors, family shot and sometime wide room shots I’ll stop down
Nikon Z 24-120 f4 and 50 1.8, all you need for a wedding day!
I hope everyone is finally getting their 24-120 hah. It took a minute
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto indeed…awesome lens!
I would prefer the Arby’s curly fries over the Canon lens bc I have a Nikon Z6.
2:06 😂😂😂FRO!!!
Shot 3 whole weddings with the nifty fifty 😊
While you could shoot a wedding with only a 50mm, why would anyone do it? Sure with 2 cameras one could use 50mm and the second a telephoto. I could do a whole wedding with a 24-70mm f2.8 and I have done so for short weddings, however for long all day weddings I use 3 lenses.
Likewise only two
There is a lot of quality difference between the cheap one and yours???
