The F1 car is just perfect, the fact that they actually included a yellow camera piece for Valtteri is mindblowing (and yes, you were correct in the video, car 77 had yellow camera)
Don't forget the "Pirelli" racing tires in the set, they make it even more authentic and realistic! LEGO never did such a feature before until now, so exciting!
Lewis Hamilton (44) has a black element for the onboard cameras and the one from Bottas (77) is yellow. This is accurate to the realise. Mercedes do this, so they can separate the drivers more easily.
Thank you for the work you put into this review. I love that you put a lot of emphasis on the innovative building techniques. I'm not a car fan whatsoever but I love Speed Champions for its incredibly clever parts usage and unconventional connections, like for instance, the hood angles you pointed out on the Project One. Seeing the intricacies of the build gives me new appreciation for an otherwise, kinda average looking grey race car.
Here is a trick for decals. Mix a spray bottle with a little dawn dish washing liquid. Spray a small amount on the sticky side of decal. Also spray a small amount in the element. This will let you apply the decals and reposition it if needed. The water does no damage to the decal. This has been a life saver especially on the BMW M motorcycle. This is how I apply decals to real cars like a Trans Am hood Bird and also race car graphics.
The project one looks really good and has some really cool and creative buildings techniques. definitely one of the best designed speed champions cars imo
The speed champions line is probably my favorite. Not a lot of pieces and they’re small, but that all have some interesting building techniques. For 20 bucks and 1 to 1.5 hours of my time they are awesome.
I was very let down with the first gen. 8 stud wide speed champions, they all felt too similar and more like brick heads, applying wedges to a massive core. The design team fully redeemed itself in the third generation, coming back to what made speed champions so much fun. Crazy intricate detail building at incredible small space, basically micro UCS sets, chapeau!
As a kid in the late 80's early 90's, we would only have dreamed Lego would release these sets! 😍😍 These things got me back into Lego after about 25 years 😁👍 A lot of fun for down time, actually pretty well priced too! Compared to the amount everything else has gone up in price since i was a kid, i am pretty surprised you can get these for about $28 per car (in Australia) and they're perfect for car guys... or girls 😉
The new 1x1x 2/3 brick is new from the January 2022 Minecraft sets. It is predominately used in white to represent a candle (the hollow stud was necessary for the flame, explaining the new mold.) It has appeared in a couple other colors as well. This is the first appearance in black.
I enjoyed the review. I’m an f1 fan and i think this mercedes is the best f1 car lego has ever made regardless of the scale, and including the soon-to-be-released mclaren. Only a few modifications need to be done such as improving the fat front and rear axis Köszi!
The Project One is the coolest car I've ever built. The unusual build techniques are insane one you complete it. Yes the rear wing needs to be re engineered.
The wheel covers appeared in the 2018 1970 Dodge Charger and 2018 Challenger Demon set as drag slicks, and the 1x1x2/3 brick appeared in some Lego Minecraft sets earlier this year
I started watching f1 in 2019 and ended up buying the two sets they released in 2017 and I am so glad that the cars have taken a step forward. Definitely buying this set and the mclaren technic set.
The F1 car looks fantastic. I think the front axel is fine because as you said there is no other way to make it sturdy enough to be played with as you know these sets are still mainly made for kids who are fans of cars. I will definitely try and challenge myself if I can come up with something else but it will probably come with a cost of rigidness.
the project one car is just fantastic with the light grey color and the light cyan color. really enjoy your content man and i will love to see more speed champions sets reviewed by you!! :))))
Here is a tip on decals. Mix a spray bottle with just a little Dawn Dishwashing liquid. Spray it on the sticky side of the decal and the element. Actually in F1 the driver sells "himself" to the team. So when a company wants to do anything with the team like a product and buys the license from the team they also buy the license to use their drivers. Back in 1997 this wasn't the case for Jaques Villneuve who drove for Williams. That's why in the Videogame F1 97 there was nothing related to Jaques Villneuve and his car was driven by a nameless driver without photo.
Totally got to buy this one! Amg Project One in my opinion isn't the prettiest one, but all those technics are just wow. And F1 is so much cooler than it was in previous Speed Champions generations 👍
Yes, that´s the way to open a box, not by ruining and opening like it was nothing. Thanks for this long awaited review. This is one of the coolest set so far, both Mercedes, both awesome with great colors. But more stickers hell that slow down the building...noooooooo!!!
Great review. Thank you so much for sharing. I'll definitely be getting this model. In regards to the price difference... I believe the fact that Formula-1 is more popular in Europe is precisely why the price is higher there (supply and demand). Got this model 2 days ago for €34 in the Netherlands, which was part of some discount by the store. Love the set, but I am a bit concerned with some of the parts being easy to disconnect. The rear wing was a bit of trial and error to get right, and same for the hood, as the angle with which it connected looked off from the onset. Came back to it a day later to finish it 😊
I really love these race cars for speedchampions. They should do 2022 F1, Perez and Verstappen, or 2022 NASCAR. One thing I wish this set was is Mercedes 2022. I just find Russell's and Hamiltons grey petronas scheme better
I just finished both cars tonight, I haven’t had a speed champions car in a long time, I absolutely hate with a passion those small stickers, both cars finished off very well with plenty of spares although I was missing the small dark grey 1x1 round brick that the micro phone piece presses into, I do t ever recall having missing pieces in all my sets as a kid in the 80’s and 90’s, Technic RT crane, Sian and this set all had a missing piece each, Lego need to up their QC more
@RacingBrick although this set is a year old as well as this video, I just purchased this set on my own and while building my own set I noticed you placed the sticker for the stick shift backwards in case you would like to fix it in the near future. I love this channel for updates and reviews. Cheers
Sadly, I learned to not mess with the clip on pieces too much. I built the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 Cadillac in this scale and MANY of the clip on elements for the spot lamps, for the hoses on the side and the front radio antenna all broke off due to stress on the two teeth. One tooth would snap and the part becomes useless. I don't even remember how much I paid for Ecto-1. At least $50 to $75 USD. Whatever it was it was pretty expensive to have had to replace several parts not long after building.
I'm not a scalper or a reseller but I'm probably going to buy 5 of these things, 30$ for almost 600 pieces is a a major deal on lego right now, especially for such a nice and collectable set, same with the new lamborghini countach set being the single best speed champion set so far, in my opinion.
Strange, they did use (just like the McLaren) a car from last year, even with drivers numbers from last year. Bottas did leave the team this new season so 77 isn’t in the team anymore. The position of the mini fig is to high. The halo shoot be above the head, so for that part it isn’t realistic. Let’s hope they will make one for the RB world champion as well.
It's an obvious and logical choice to model the F1 car from last year. The 2022 season just started, you find no any models of those cars yet anywhere since they were literally revealed a few days ago.
@@RacingBrick But we've known what the global shape of the 2022 cars would look like for two years now. And there's no way you can represent the variantions in this scale anyway. I think it's more likely they didn't finalise the livery in time for lego.
@@StuntpilootStef it can be the livery, but also the the details of 2022 cars that are more difficult to recreate at this scale. The design of this car was practically ready last May when I saw the prototype. There's no way they knew anything about the exact 2022 details or the livery back then.
@@relaksz6183 This is not a diecast model. This is a very broad approximation of an f1 car based on existing parts. It would be extremely hard to build a Speed Champions set of a 2022 Mercedes that would look any different at all from even a 2022 Haas or one of the study models from the FIA if you too out colour and stickers. They would look exactly the same. I really don't understand what's so hard about this.
The pieces at 3:09 appear in Lego Minecraft sets. You can find them in the Guardian Battle set as sea pickles. I'm pretty sure they are in another set but I'm not entirely sure.
Yeah! I really like this double pack, both vehicles looks very very good and the price is great for 500+ bricks set. I think I'll buy it just after the premiere in Poland🙂
I kind of don't like the idea of double packs - I'd rather have those separately and choose the car that I like for the same price as other one car sets.
I imagine the cost of licensing is at least part of the reason why need to try and force sales through double packs instead of singles. I mean, we'd all love it if Marvel or Star Wars minifigs were sold individually in blind bags, but then many of us would never buy the sets at all.
I think double packs give you a chance to buy cars that you wouldn't consider normally, but they might offer a surprisingly good building experience like the Project One here.
Wth is this price again. 40€ is like 45 dollars so the set is waaay more expensive than in the us😶 Edit: Ok it costs 49,90 EUROS here in Finland. That is 57 dollars so almost double the price😔
I got a bit upset with the Mercedes W12 a while ago lol I only just decided I should fix it and tbh looks quite good first bit I hated about it was the front wing was too high up there was not exhaust and the wing was held poorly kinda now it is a bit more fragile but who cares I got wing pylons and exhaust and a perfectly positioned front wing now lol
Might sound petty, but the front axles are kind of a dealbreaker. Why grey? If black they would at least be slightly camouflaged and the correct colour. Could you mod with a long black axle and give up some stability for accuracy? Also not a fan of forced double packs - would only want the F1 really
Knowing the perfectionism of the Speed Champions designers I'm sure they went through all the possible combinations. Tried with black, doesn't really look better for me. At this scale without coming up with a specialized wishbone part I don't think there'd be a proper solution.
About the black axle - if you use a simple axle nothing holds the wheels, you need a pin connection at the end, and a frictionless one to enable rotation.
Man those Speed Champion F1 cars look so good. Shall I say better than the technic F1's? Yeah, Speed Champions F1's look way better. I want to collect them all. Great review!
Very nice set One thing I don’t understand is why can’t they use the newer one piece slick tires. Thegap between the wheel covers and the tires on the new slicks are negligible
For 30$ (26eu) I will purchase it, unfortunatly I live in France so 40eu (45$) is so outrageous that I won't take that set, freaking hate those prices gap which are some kind of scam in my eyes!
Speed Champions single car sets are €20 so €40 for a double-pack makes sense. Also €40 for 568 parts in a licensed set with 2 minifigures is not a bad price. The reason it's cheaper in the US is probably because F1 isn't that popular there so people need a bit more encouragement to buy the set. Although with that logic the dragster set should be cheaper in Europe...
Is the set a Lego store eclusive? I've been looking for it here in the UK but it seems to only be available in the Lego store. Feel like the answer might be obvious but just wanted to make sure.
I do not like the look of most of this wave's SC models too much apart from the Lambo. But the sheer abundance of little clever techniques will probably still make me buy all of them. That is what brick building is all about for me. This front assembly using towballs which you pointed out is great indeed. But it is not too tricky and probably pretty much straightforward for the Lego designers. Only creating certain angles in two directions or attaching an angled sub-assembly at two points is what makes such constructions really tricky. That was obviously not necessary here.
Do the wheels/tires on the F1 seem a bit small? In proportion at least they do to me but I haven't worked out the math to see if there is a better option
Thank you for the review. In my opinion the W12 lacks a lot from the front wing to the sidepods. The wierd T-hose connector piece doesnt do the front suspension justice and the bargeboard is very odd looking. They should have moved the bargeboards 1 stud forward, and delete the wishbone that they are trying to model. Anyhow this set is still on the shoppinglist
I think the position of the barge board is spot on. If anything, it's the size of the wheels that throwing everything off by a bit. But at the end of the day, this is a lego version, not some high fidelity model kits.
The F1 car is just perfect, the fact that they actually included a yellow camera piece for Valtteri is mindblowing (and yes, you were correct in the video, car 77 had yellow camera)
One thing though, I think the camera piece would be better if it was just a tile, real F1 T-cameras don't have anything protruding from the top

Thats the one im most hyper for, i wish i could get it early like you.
Speed Champions sets are some of the most fun builds I’ve ever done. Will definitely be collecting as many of these as I can!
The 1x1 plate-bricks were used in the New Year Traditions set.
Hi mate shall I but the lego technic porches formula e or the mercerdes speeds champion set
The 2022 line up is really gonna hurt my wallet. I think it is a huge step up from last years sets!
Lucky you got the set already before me where I live
I think the teal line on the sticker would be so you know which way to put the sticker on
It'll be cool if they provide 2 helmet prints. One for Lewis and another for Bottas
The wheel covers were also used on the dodge hellcat
Those newer 1x1 pieces pieces are in the newer Aston Martin
Do the wheels/tires on the F1 seem a bit small? In proportion at least they do to me but I haven't worked out the math to see if there is a better option
absolutely wants this
Thank you for the review.
