- I received a commission to create some outdoor subdivision signs, after agreeing on a design I figured it would be a good chance to use some of the Oak I acquired, yet neglected for far too long.

Inspiring work man. Yeah, stacking the lumber with the spacers is the way to go!
Thank you Brannon, yes learned my lesson for sure.
Great information.
Why thank you father!
Nice video and project, thumbs up and subscribed! I really liked how you showed real world rather practice rather than "perfect glue ups". It was nice to see a combination of traditional wood working with the CNC. The only thing I would have done different is a lighter stain so the contrast on the lettering would have been easier to read (I am old so vision and contrast is becoming important).
Thank you so much for the kind words. And I totally agree on the lighter stain since those letters are dark also. Glad to have you as a viewer hope you stick around.
Very cool! I really enjoyed this. Did you mill the wood yourself? Also, look into seasoning wood. Even with drying with spacing, molding can happen. Keep the videos coming!
No I did not mill these I have a brother in law who I bought them from he is taking over a farm and sawmill.
I usually spray my boards with a couple of layers of shellac before carving the letters. That way when I am coloring the letters after the carve I am pretty confident that the paint won't leech into the grain on areas where I drip and stuff. Then it all sands off really easily. Question for you, what is the stain that you used on your oak boards? I really love the color you got for your final product. Oh, and I use the keyhole bit on my X-Carve as well and it scares the crap out of me. 🙂
Spraying a sealer before painting end grain is very important I don't know why it didn't make the edit but looking at my old footage you can see a satin sheen on my wood before I started hand brushing the letters, thank goodness cause red oak end grain is the worst.
The stain in minwax I believe it is provincial one of my favorites of theirs.
What does "No Soliciting" mean in USA?
We don't have that regulation im UK, but here "Soliciting" normally relates to scantily clad women on street corners!
Basically just means no door to door salesman. No one allowed to bother you and try to sell you anything.
Those are really nice quality signs! I'm a beginner in this field. What would the ballpark price be on those signs? I know a lot of people say anywhere from 2-3x the cost of materials plus your hourly rate. Do you follow those same rules of thumb?
It probably wasn't enough but for this Job I made $475 I am now charging $75 hourly rate and am happy at that price for now.
What is the spray you are using?

What kind of CNC is that ?
That's a 2018 xcarve by inventables, but I would recommend looking into the onefininity cnc now.
@@ChadsCustomCreations okay thanks I was looking into the shapeoko pro .. I’ll check the one you recommended also
Nice. Moisture is a pain.
"Moist" wood is no fun
