David Bowie was an English singer-songwriter & actor. He constantly reinvented himself to stay current over nearly 5 decades. His first big hit was "Space Oddity" in 1969. He has had a lot of great songs including "Ziggy Stardust", "Starman", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Changes", "Fame", "Heroes", "Golden Years", "Ashes To Ashes", "Under Pressure", Let's Dance", "Modern Love", "China Girl" etc.

David Bowie was an absolute genius! From the 1960's until his early death in 2016, he re-invented himself numerous times and wrote the most incredible songs for himself and others. He was an absolute one off and I'm really sad that there there will be no more music from him, but I'm thankful he left behind such a unique and unmatchable back catalogue.

Another things that's so amazing about him, through all the reinventions he was never the follower. He was the leader. Some of his most famous songs are Space Oddity, Ziggy Stardust, Starman, Rebel Rebel, Young American, Golden Years, Heroes, Ashes to Ashes. All are completely different. A deeper track I think you'd like is "Right" his mantra to positive thinking inspired by Philly Soul with a young Luther Vandross on the background vocals.

YOU are hitting all the correct notes today!!! You're right - he's the coolest. He was so secure in his talent that he never allowed success to govern the direction of his career. Several times, he turned his back on things most artists would die to have once in their career only to re-invent himself as something even more interesting and relevant. He's definitely one of the most influential artists of all time. Just don't judge him by one song - those from another time in his career have a completely different sound and appeal to a whole different audience. Besides all that.....any dude lucky enough to marry Iman has to be the embodiment of cool.

Other great songs to react to are: Wild is the Wind, Space Oddity and Slip Away. But there are many and they are all great. No he had no classical training with his voice. He was born with it. 😉 His mother used to sing in the kitchen when he was small. But he was able to play 14 instruments. 😮He was also acting in many movies, he was a painter and also a sculpturist. 🙂 I hope to see you to react to more of him.

I was lucky enough to have seen David Bowie four times, and it was always amazing. His stage performances are very theatrical. In 1987, while in line for the Glass Spider concert, we met a girl who was at the concert alone so she kind of stayed close to our group. It was an all day event and she wandered off, but we would see her from time time time throughout the day. After The Georgia Sattelites and Duran Duran, we moved to the front of the stage for Bowie's part of the show and this girl made her way down and we were all watching the start of the show. After a few songs, Bowie noticed the girl in the crowd and got one of his roadies to get her on stage, and she was freaking out. Shaking and crying and falling down. They start the next song and Bowie is dancing with her and singing to her and she's loving it. And then he grabbed her inappropriately and she slapped him!! And the dancing gets more intense and that was when we realized that it was all part of the show. Hours ahead of time, she was meeting people like us in the line up and being social with everyone so that we would remember her and thirty five years later we are still talking about it.

That being said....even I could recognize that David Bowie was the epitome of "cool" in his heyday. He transcends genres constantly throughout his career so there's always a little something new to hear. He even made being androgynous "cool." And I don't want that to sound insulting to anyone....be whatever you want to be, as long as you aren't harming anyone....but Bowie was just something else. And on top of that, he didn't take crap from anybody. He stood tall and said "love me or hate me, this is what you get." He didn't actually "say" that, but you get my point. Love your stuff, Britt! Keep the dream alive!

I immediately stopped and said "Holy shit, you're David Bowie" he smiled and said "You've sussed me copper" and got into the car.. took me a long time to figure out what that meant but I'll never forget it.

    Great things to watch:
    Under Pressure, with Freddy Mercury.
The Man who Sold the World (amazing hook)
Let's Dance, Modern Love. Not my favorite songs of his, but they were on HEAVY repeat on MTV and are basically the aural wallpaper of my youth.
I'm Afraid of Americans, with Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails). One of his many amazing reinventions.
Lazarus. David Bowie's final performance, knowing he was dying of cancer. I cannot watch this video without sobbing.

I should be focusing on Bowie but you are stunning girl from your fellow sister 🤩 I love how you describe him. No classical training. All natural. I didn’t think those things when I first heard him. I just thought. He’s cool I’m buying his cd.

Bowie was an original, an innovator, a free thinker with rock solid values AND fearless with it (check out his MTV interview in the 80s). He also showed people across the planet that it was totally OK not to conform yet to be true to oneself. All that on top of his wonderful music and lyrics.

You'll get this with tons of artists, but David Bowie's one who you should really dive in on, one of the all-time greats and arguably the greatest solo artist of all time. This song had been inspired by a woman named Hermione Farthingale who David had fallen in love with when he'd been young, and her perspective on how many beings who are different from most are treated in this strange world which we live on. Do we notice mothers, dogs, and clowns? Is there life on Mars? David's piano arrangement had been based on a song which is known as My Way by Frank Sinatra. David had worked for a music publishing company and attempted to rewrite a French song, Comme d'habitude by Claude François, in English. His attempt had been rejected by that company, and Jimmy Webb's attempt, My Way, had been offered to Frank Sinatra and immortalized in music history. David had written this song in an afternoon and released it in 1971 on his fourth album, Hunky Dory. It had been his favorite song of his career.
David hadn't received professional vocal training. Famously, he'd recorded most vocals of his songs in one or two takes. He'd had a vocal range of around six octaves. While he's mostly recognized for characters of his voice, his fashion sense, and his adaptability as an artist, he'd been an extraordinary vocalist, and an even greater songwriter and lyricist. You'll really love him, especially when you hear combinations of all kinds of songs on his albums, singles and deep cuts.
I recommend reacting to these four performances of his to get you started on his discography:
Space Oddity (live, The 1980 Floor Show, 1973)

Word on a Wing (live, Vancouver rehearsal 1976)

    Blackout (live, 1978)

As the World Falls Down [Movie Version]
    m.ua-cam.com/video/DELxlEftkTQ/v-deo.html
He'll always stun you with how cool he is!!! Best journey as you listen to him!!! 👨🏼‍🎤💙

I love Mike Garson on piano, I think Bowie murmurs, "Thanks, Michael," at the end. Check out his dizzying avant-something solo on Bowie's 'Aladdin Sane'.
Other personal faves? Everything everyone else chose plus:
    What In the World
    Diamond Dogs
    Boys Keep Swinging (SNL version)
    Kooks
    Loving the Alien
    Criminal World
    Hang On to Yourself
    Rock'n'roll Star.
That should add up to a damn good start, enjoy the journey. 🖖😘🎶💃😒🕊

I miss David a lot, he was one of the most influential artists of the 70's and 80's. With a feel for the taste of the time, always right at the front. And he was such a poet. For a lot of people was this man the soundtrack of their life.
I couldn't listen to his last album and especially the title "Lazarus" for a long time without bursting into tears.
If you're tough listen to the title, if not, don't.

He was for the most part a self-taught musician, although he had some vocal coaching in the 70's where he learned how to sing from his diaphragm. His powerful vocals were strong to the end. His range was amazing for a pop star. Give Wild is The Wind a try from the same concert.
And for the record...no one will ever be Bowie cool 😉

You have to do the studio version and the video he filmed in the very early 70s for it to appreciate his audio and visual artistic brilliance. This is only a clip of the song, not the full song...also no reaction channel is doing his song "Sweet Thing/ Candidate/ Sweet Thing Reprise". That's a brilliant one if you want a good sample of the edgy 70s Bowie...
