  • In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, the guys give an update on what's happening as we head into May. We spend so much time in the off-season planning and implementing different land management projects to really try and create the best deer sanctuary we can come the bow season. Between our farms in Ohio, Kentucky, and Illinois, we only have so much time to get it done. There's a lot that goes into creating a successful deer hunting property, but the one thing we always try to remember is how we can manipulate the landscape to not be discovered by the deer we're after. We hope you guys enjoy this episode as we discuss what it means to "Paint the Land" for whitetail success. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

    Another great podcast, thank you! Blue paint / red paint was extremely educational to me as a newer hunter, will apply these principles to my farm.

    One of the better Midwest hunting podcasts out there. From Texas and you have inspired me to save for a few years for a Midwest property to farm/hunt on.

    You should do a podcast where you show pictures of your favorite bucks and tell the stories of what you did to kill them.

    One thing I never hear about much are evergreens for cover. I've helped plant over 12,000 on my family and cousins property in the past 22 years. Along with deciduous trees and fruit trees. I helped plant 150 trees combined of persimmon, chestnut and maple just 2 weeks ago on my cousins btw.. But on the evergreens.... All the bucks I've ever killed besides one, were either in trees that were planted or in foodplots next to them. That's consists of 2 p&y and 1 pa rifle record. On a property where lots of family camp, hike, ride quads all over and has tons of hunting pressure from family and neighbors as well. All while located in the heart of, if its brown its down pennsylvania lol. The difficulty I see is trying to find someone in the average guys situation. Everyone wants to mimic the big guys that are hunting and consulting for a living yet it's only practical for a small number of hunters nationwide. I want to hear from the work smarter not harder, full time, blue collar, doesn't have alot of money, trying to save money, minimalist guy who kills a decent buck every so often on properties completely opposite than the properties you guys talk about. Along with that, what about still hunting. Everything revolves around sitting in a tree or using a bow. What about 1 vs 1 on the ground still hunting? It's becoming a lost way of killing deer.

      The evergreens is a great question. I know lots of places that hold piles of deer in them, but I find them as biological deserts which is likely not as desirable to deer. Thermal cover for sure but in PA it’s not a requirement for survival. So I’m open to it, but year I haven’t had a to. Of experience

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors Місяць тому

      @@HUNTRPOD the biological desert is true. This is the only down side. But, when you suck in deer from the neighbors when the bullets start flying. ( they have all the food btw) That's where they run to vs the nasty thick clear cut areas. They want not only cover at eye level but also in the sky. They want it dark and still and quiet. There's a reason that my relatives that are just a mile or so away on thier property say when you hunt my pines it's a deer mecca. Of course, we are talking rifle season here. It's not like that early season as much when there's leaves on the trees. They are just now planting pine trees ( past 5 years) on thier properties to accomplish the same thing. The only thing I've seen that rivals pines/spruce for bedding are autumn olive thickets where the plant is the size of a house lol. Imo, pines are better because you can sell the pines later down the road. Plus, I'll pick up handfuls of acorns, and pick many 5 gallon buckets full of walnuts from my family farm. Scatter those everywhere ( no planting) and I already have walnuts that are 30 ft high producing nuts on thier own. It creates tons of woody browse. If a tree makes it past the deer then that's an increase in value for my land. It costs me nothing but my time.

    This is a great conversation if you have property to do this on legitimately. But practically its a very small % of hunters that can have true red areas. There's no red or blue on public land. Let's just call those Orange areas 😂. You have no idea if your "red" area is being painted blue by someone else.

    • @HUNTRPOD
      @HUNTRPOD  Місяць тому

      Haha you’re right! Almost look at there being three areas red deer territory, blue hunter territory and then Green is the space left over likely the space which would otherwise be blue
