Interesting, if you don’t like the style of one guitarist or the technique “you know nothing…” I know how good he was as a guitarist. At the time, I had heard it all before and didn’t like the music, does that mean I know nothing? when I had music from just about every great guitarist who had ever lived… I guess so, I guess that leaves me in the position where my mind is so “empty” of real knowledge of what a great guitarist really is, that one day, with luck, I might fortuitously, learn “something”…

Michael I hope you read this. The quintessential Rory story is that he'd play a show like this, maybe 3 hours, then show up at the pub around the corner from the venue with an acoustic, and play songs for 5 more hours. He was a beautiful soul who loved music maybe more than anyone ever has.

Brian May (who I love similiarly) got his setup (guitar into treble booster into Vox AC30) by Rory.
Back then, the very young Brian was at a Rory concert and after the concert, he asked him, how Rory produces his incredible sound.
And being the humble guy, Rory was, he took his time, to tell him in detail.
That's how an important part of Queen's Brian May signature sound has been created.
Both men are/has been such incredibly humble persons. I had email contact with Brian, 10 years ago, about a red special replica from Andrew Guyton and he was such a nice person and helped me out, a lot!

A guitar teacher who’s never seen this? Rory was one of a kind. Check out his acoustic “Out on the Western Plain,” his Coral sitar on “Philby.” He was innately a bluesman, and he also played slide guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and saxophone. That beat-up Strat? It was the first in Ireland, and Rory bought it for £100, a fortune for him at the time. Rory is Ireland’s favorite son, and his music lives on. Every summer in Ireland, there is a festival in honor of Rory and his music. There’s no one like him.

Saw Rory play 3 times in Sydney. Once let a guy from the audience up to sing halfway through Shadowplay. It worked really well. That's the awesome Gerry McAvoy on bass. Listen to Bullfrog Blues on the Live In Europe album. Rory a great musician, plays sax as well (listen to I Can't Believe It's True). No tremolo arm, his vibrato and bend + vibrato are 100% fingers. His right hand a fucking machine. Listen to intro to Moonchild, when he right hand taps on to a fierce bend at the 17th fret and the guitar just fucking screams. Good lord!

      You nailed it!
I liked this band the most,
Gerry was always with him. Ted (R.I.P.) the most solid drummer.
      I was born in 1950.
Was always with him, even in Taste days.

My friends older brother turned us on to Rory Gallagher in 1977 when I was 13.
I bought and listened to Top Priority and Live with amazement and later saw the band at the Ritz in NYC and Harpos in Detroit.
His acoustic playing was every bit as amazing as his electric playing.
Great voice and natural showmanship. Love it!
    Thanks for the reaction video.

Rory is the best guitar player I've ever seen, that being said, this isn't the best example of his work. Acoustically, he is amazing, he had a very unique way of playing, I've seen no one play like him ever! He also played a damn good slide guitar. Better examples would be, Tattoo'd Lady (Live at Montreux), amazing performance and Laundromat 1971 Beat Club is good too. Everything from Madrid 1975 performance. The guy is fantastic!

Unbelievable performance! Not sure there's many other instances where 3 chords on loop can get the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up like that. There's a small section at 11:20 where the drummer hits the bell on the ride takes it up a notch in spite of the fact that nothings else changes, and it's just awesome!!

I saw him in Atlanta in the winter of 81. I was with Tinsley Ellis who I went to school with and another musician. We were psyched to see him but we couldn't stay it was so loud. It was literally twice as loud as anything I've ever seen. My ears never were the same.

Fantastic Rory Gallagher, I love his music, what he was, a very nice man, not at all star system, a lover of live music, a Legendary guitarist that I met very recently, but I love it, I'm a drummer and I love bass and guitar. Besides, Ted Mckenna on drums and Gerry McAvoy are monstrous on this live

One of the reasons I love Rory was that he wore his influences on his sleeve but still made something very unique. The way he played is just so unabashedly him that it's great.
Part of the reason for that is his repetition alongside the mental fluid runs. I remember reading that he grew up without many records due to financial constraints, so he used to wait up to listen to Radio Luxembourg and AFN's Jazz and Blues shows, so whilst he was hearing blues, he was also hearing great jazz soloists, particularly horn players, who would really force through repetition of ideas in their playing

Saw Gerry McAvoy (the bass player) just before the Covid lockdowns, this guy then was and still is today a legend, a fantastic bass player and a really nice guy. His band was really nice and you got a feeling for how unbelievably awesome it would have been with Rory on stage, too. Everyone was missing him that evening, but Gerry and the band gave their best and they did well.

Thanks for the video Michael and great to hear you talk intervals and cadence. Really helps to understand what is going on musically. From an Irishman. Rory did this every night btw. He wasn't commercially very "successful" because he wouldn't sell out to the music sharks. He played for the people in the audience👍🎸

Finally Rory! Thanks for this appreciation of one of the greatest Rock performers ever. As a little boy who had just picked up a guitar for fun I watched Rory opening up for an all night live show on German TV in 1976. I was infected with the guitar virus from that night on.
Only a little later I saw Dickey Betts on that same TV program. These two guitarists changed my life and I am so grateful for that.

I was only ten years old in ‘73 but I remember my older brother listening to Rory. Tatto’d Lady was cranked up often when our parents left the house. Wasn’t he the Rolling Stone’s first choice after Brian Jones died? I believe he had just inked a tour in Japan and couldn’t get out of it so Mick Taylor got the nod. He is another great one that gets overlooked.

Rory the Irishman with a gift.
This is my favourite video of Rory's too. So playful.
He gives me a lump in my throat every time I see or hear him. I bought a couple of albums in the 70s. Great to play at parties. He had the blues in his bones and he loved his guitar. His voice too was absolutely unique and expressive. And his song writing. God Bless you young Rory. You were a beautiful young man with a cute wiggle in your walk, gone too soon but you were true to yerself. No wonder you ate so loved.
