I met Rory quite a few times: a kinder, more gracious man you could not wish to meet. Point of interest: he used incredbly heavy gauge strings and I just do not know how he achieved those bends and pushes - but he did have hands like malt shovels, which probably helped! He hated pedals - only ever used a "Rangemaster" treble boost as far as I know. To be quite honest, he would have been utterly wasted with the Stones - the thought of such a workaholic perfectionist putting up with the antics of the Glimmer Twins is almost ridiculous. As Bill Wyman said, "10% playing and 90% waiting for Keith and Mick to show up, if at all." Great great rhythm section, with Wilgar Campbell keeping it anchored in such a choppy tempo. WG told me that his first drumming skills came from playing in a military style as a young Cadet: and you can see the way he holds his sticks emphasises this. Gerry reliable as ever! As everyone knows, Brian May sat at his feet at the old Marquee in Wardour Street and derived his style and even his gear from Rory - a Rangemaster and a bank of AC 30s! Your comments about his vibrato are absolutely spot on. Excellent analysis of one of the finest players - and men - of all time. Thank you.

@@d23bw, thank you! I was lucky enough to meet Rory many times, play his guitar and see him play, about 38 times. He really was a one-off and very kind and chatty. But…. there is so much loss and sadness in so many of his songs. It’s easy to see why he was so entranced by the rural blues guys and, of course, his beloved Muddy. He rated JB Hutto and John Estes extremely highly: both extraordinary players. You might enjoy Grandma Moses UK on UA-cam or my brilliant daughter Isobel Thatcher: try her “Walking Down the Tracks.” Best, Tom

went to see Deep Purple in 1973 when "Made in Japan" was released Rory opened up for them and i never heard of him. i was floored completely blown away. after his encore the crowd was in a frenzy stomping and standing on their seats wanting more Rory.
he made it difficult for DP that night that's how good he was. the next day i went out and bought everything he made.
I saw Rory dozens of times throughout the 70s and the thing was there was always this huge enthusiasm from him and the band to throw everything into the show.
The other thing was the intensity and that the show would be an hour and a half, two hours straight.
No keyboards etc. nowhere to hide, just the three of them.
Never to be forgotten.
I saw him at Hammersmith Odeon in 1987. The band played fornearly three hours, with no interval. In the mid-70s a keyboard player joined the band. Check out Irish Tour '74.

Rory had it all, including being the nicest guy in the business. Everyone who heard him play was an instant fan. What indeed was there not to like? Great groove, original style, loads of energy, neat and meaningful songs, the common touch in spades, street and traditional cred, tight competent band, and blue jeans to top it all off with.
Rory was NEVER underrated by anyone whose opinion was worth listening to.
Rory's band was ALWAYS tight! Rory Gallagher is one of the GREATEST GUITARIST to EVER LIVE!! I'm also an American that finds it sad how little attention that Rory has received through out his career and since in the US! Not only is he one of the TOP 5 GUITARIST ALL TIME but PROBABLY THE MOST UNDERRATED MUSICIAN EVER! EVER! EVER!

During the 1973 Tour of Deep Purple, my friends and I bought tickets to see them at the old San Bernardino Swing Auditorium. Rory Gallagher was the opening band. I was immediately star struck. We all were. In fact, Rory unintentionally stole the show from DP. No disrespect for DP, but we all cheered Rory on for two more encores before he finally had to stop. From then on, I became a Rory fan.
That's pretty damn cool! I never had the chance to see him live, thankfully he's got a lot of material and live performances on YT....
My dad talked about seeing Rory open up for Deep Purple. He said Deep purple were mad because there were chants for Rory as Purple tried to play.
I was there 5th row just off center !
the 2nd band that evening was the old Fleetwood Mac. :- D
That tour was upon the release of Made In Japan.
Rory was also a wonderful performer in how he inter-acted with the crowd. To illustrate this there is a video of him playing Bullfrog Blues in France where he actually mixes with the crowd on the floor. He was never cautious about letting fans touch him etc. He was the real deal.

It's quite strange that he's not known as one of the very best guitarists. I get it, he wasn't a poser and didn't chase stardom like a moth to a light, but he really didn't need to. He was special.

I had to watch your professional analysis of RG once again today, upon hearing the news that his beloved Stratocaster is going up for auction for the first time. He was such a rare talent and loved so dearly by his fans, including myself. I can tell you admired him too, which makes your video fun to watch. I'm hoping that his beloved guitar finds a home in Ireland for the public to see and remember. It's only fitting.

I've just found this Fil and I can't resist commenting on it as it's Rory Gallagher. As far as guitarists go Rory was the "Real Deal", no crap, just honest playing ability along with Gerry and Wilgar 👍👍👍.

Thank you for a wonderful video.! The Beat Club Sessions are my favourite Rory Gallagher performances. Rory was barely 24 years of age during these sessions.. with such incredible skill and technique. Jimi Hendrix thought highly of Rory.. and many of Rory’s peers were in awe of his playing. Rory was the ultimate blues rock guitarist. A true guitar legend. 🎸

God is good seen Rory many times when he played the nyc area. He had a rabid fan base, many the same at all he shows. Talked to him at the bar between sets at the bottom line. a true gentleman. still have a the guitar pick he gave me. Never to be forgotten. Love what you do Fil.
HI IM RETIRED i was born in westminster London , i first met rory in 1969 in shaftsbury ave near SOHO . in london we were looking in a guitar shop window . i recognised him cause he was my hero i had the taste 1st album . his temprerment was very ' SHY . withdrawn . but he told me he was playing the MARQUEE Club .and told me to come down . of course did ' he really was quiet until he got his guitar in his hands . he used a vox ac30 with a range master

particularly in cambridge corn exchange . where hed chat . i still have a signed live in europe lp... RORY Never played for the LUV Of money it was a joy and a natural talent . he would have played for free .
i remember him once telling me about the Phrases he played . .that hed been trying also . ..i look back now and think about all the bands iv been around cause in those DAYS It was easy to mix in the CLUBS . rory STICKS out more i miss him a lot . thanks .

Rory was up there with Hendrix but never got the credit in the wider public eye. His peers realised it though, as do many that are only discovering him now. He was the real deal and I'm sure had he still been around in his 70th year, he'd still be smashing boundaries. The complete legend!

I came across a story a bit ago that went approximately like this: someone asked Jimi Hendrix what it felt like to be the world's greatest guitarist, and his reply was, 'You mean, like Rory Gallagher?"
It was the drug taking and the poor discipline that turned him off. He was with them for a week. Thank fuck he didn't join them

I LOVE Rory Gallagher! He is in my top 10 list of favorite guitarists. I saw him live in concert opening for Rush for the Signals tour and he just blew my mind. Gallagher just did so many cool things, crazy fills and riffs just out of nowhere. He is a legend, period. Thanks , Fil and rock on with your bad self.
I saw Rory in my home town of Sunderland in 1974.
He was simply incredible.
Rory Gallagher was without ego. Brian May of Queen holds Rory Gallagher in high esteem and talks about him given him insight on how he obtained his sound in an interview on UA-cam. Rory Gallagher was a man that was true to himself and to the music that inspired him without favour to monitory again. Today Rory Gallagher rests in a quiet cemetery in Ireland while his music continues to entertain and inspire.
Rory was way underrated here his playing is genius level he can play anything pretty much just like Gary Moore Roy Buchanan Danny gatton Scotty Anderson tommy Emanuel and others I am forgetting to mention

Roy Buchanan, what a player, I saw him in 1973 having never heard of him before but wow, Thank You Lord for him! Tommy Emmanuel, his Pink Panther is far better than the original!
He was our never miss show when I was young. We never missed a show and always ended up in front of or sitting on the stage. He never disappointed. One of my all time favorites. Met Gerry McAvoy awhile back at a tribute show in southern California and he was a very nice and gracious person.
As an American who was lucky enough to grow up in Europe I have a great love for Rory but am heartbroken and dumbfounded that most people in my country have never heard of him. Thankfully there are a few great musicians, like Joe Bonamassa, who have sung his praises. In fact, check out Joe playing this very guitar (I believe) on a live post of "Sloe Gin" from the Royal Albert Hall. The guitar still sounds great. Thanks for this post, Fil. Cheers!
Sadly, not many in America get him either. My very first concert was Rory opening for Trower opening for Tull. I was in heaven. Most others in the audience didn't seem to notice. Their loss.

I saw that vid too, McBride. Rory's brother Donal owns that Strat now. It was actually 'Sig'd" for the European market about 15 years ago. Pretty great Joe B got to blast it the way he did. I know he was a fan.

Mind boggling. Lucky you. I had a chance to see Gallagher in Boston in 1985 but my then-girlfriend's dog ran away and I missed him (Rory. Not the dog). The album "Top Priority" is straight out great.
Well said! I saw Rory about 40 times and his worst performance would have taken almost any band apart. Good to hear you comment on his vibrato and "clean" playing. He really had a "thing" about pedals, and almost all his "effects" are by using the tone and volume controls on the Strat. I well remember his tiny Rangemaster Treble Booster with the old Strat and his equally ancient Vox AC30. He was an incredibly kind guy, always had time for the fans. I took these three out for supper in Salisbury in 1971. What a great night!!

Fil - Rory is not just one of my all time fav guitarists, but also a HOF musician generally speaking. He's also a Hall of Fame human being - the sort of person it would be a gift to meet. I see a lot of Rory's personality in you and that is the highest compliment I could pay you.

I lived a long time in Ireland I definitely know who this is. I haven't heard him for so long until now it's been years. Like I always say the 70s have some of the best musicians of all time

The best decade for rock and the like. Prog, Fusion, etc. And straight ahead blues rock.
Agree...so many treasured musicians. The fusion sound was enormously well received in the 1970s as an outgrowth of Bitches Brew and the young musicians that played on the album (not so young anymore and a good many have passed on). A Million Miles Away.

GREAT review! Nice to see someone else appreciate Rory, especially like yourself who understands the effort and skills needed to make that sound. I got to see Rory in concert a few times. the first was in San Francisco at The Old Waldorf in 1979. My brother had seen him in England and really talked him up. I was amazed at his show. He played such a variety of music from hard rock'n'roll to blues to acoustic slide. I saw him again twice in 1982. The first was again at The Old Waldorf and a recording of some of that show is included on the CD "Blues From San Francisco."
He did a version of "Follow Me" during that show that nearly made me lose my mind! (appx 37:20 of >) (entire concert is at ua-cam.com/video/8XepW1dd9Dc/v-deo.html).
A week later Rory was playing at San Jose State University and this time it wasn't a sit down club atmosphere but rather a general admission free-for-all. There was a sign on the door that read "No Dancing" which we thought was pretty strange. Turns out the show was on the second floor of the Student Union building and it had a "floating floor" this being California and earthquake country and all that. My brother and I brought our girlfriends but they weren't too into the show so they went and sat outside. As for the rest of the crowd, people just went f*cking NUTS when Rory took the stage and stayed like that until the end of the show. One of the most seriously high-energy performances I had ever seen. If you watch the video of "Bullfrog Blues" that was recorded at a nightclub in Paris in 1980, you get an idea of what it was like.

I kept waiting for Rory to come back to the Bay Area in support of some of the albums he was still producing. Then in 1995 I found out he had died, on my birthday of all days. He died of a MRSA infection following a liver transplant and it made me so sad not just for myself but also for all the people that would never get to see and experience his shows. He was a gifted guitar player and a wonderful performer. In an era when bands were heavily reliant on lasers, spandex and pyrotechnics, Rory was so unassuming and REAL. I shook hands with Rory and with Gerry McEvoy after a show and both of them were SOAKED with sweat from rocking so hard. RIP Rory. Heaven's got you now. Peace.

Hello Wings of Pegasus. I loved your analysis of Rory, it was so real and your appreciation of him showed on your face. Two things you said really struck a chord with me. The first is when you said you "feel more than you analyse". This, to me, is the test of whether anything is good, (my words now) you feel something and then try to analyse it but, somehow, the analysis always never quite captures how you felt at the moment you recognised the sheer quality. If you have read, among other things, "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" you will be familiar with this whole idea. The second thing that struck a chord with me was when you mentioned the really clean tone at high speed. I could provide a long list of so called top notch artists who fail to provide a clear tone at high speed, nobody ever seems to call it out when it happens.
Apart from what you said, he was a prolific writer of songs which he performed to the highest quality, I saw him twice and the shows were fantastic. As you said, he also sung and this makes playing a lot more difficult. He also played the harmonica to a high standard and was also adept with the saxophone.
You seemed uncertain about the bassist and drummer and they were, indeed, Gerry and Wilgar. I always thought Gerry to have been rather unsung.
All in all, I don't think we will ever see another Rory again which makes his early demise a real source of sadness, even now.

An interview with a musician from the band The Dubliners observed how "genuinely unassuming" Rory was prior a recording session. Maybe Rory's genius did not belong to Rory, but that Rory was a vehicle for genius to roam and play freely in a "genuinely unassuming" being.
Rory never used a tremolo arm or any effects pedals and was still able to get incredible sounds from his guitar. what a player he was. massive respect for him.

Sorry, Rory used a flanger pedal and an octave pedal ( listen to I aint no saint DefenderAlbum), he is my favourite guitar player of all time, met him at The mayflower Southampton, words can't describe the genius, take care
saw him with taste at Malvern Winter gardens If i remember rightly might have been Hereford but twice in Bristol with his own band he also used the wonderful Dallas Rangemaster the effect of the Gods he was one himself

I think Rory used "Boss" pedals occasionally. Rory could do whatever he wanted, because he was the greatest guitarist there has ever been, and I love the guy!
You nailed the thing that struck me the most when I saw Rory play. The joy he projected swept the audience up and made the concerts unforgettable.

One of the first concerts I saw was Rory with Mahogany Rush as the opener. I like that his leads seem to say something, not just runs. The first slide break a minute or so into the song Country Mile would be a good example. A couple guys at the show were mentioning that they saw Rory and the band at a highway service station, fueling up and grabbing some food! They chatted with him and said he was just totally down to earth.
Yeah he communicates through his guitar which is very difficult to master.
Frank and MR were terrific, but not well received by the crowd. They didn't want to hear a copy of the 13 minute Red House for example. :-)

The first time I heard Rory was on a Taste compilation album called Pop History Vol 2. The cover caught my eye because of his beat-up Stratocaster. I was a young man starting to play guitar and as I listened to the album, something started to influence me, in particular the song "it's happened before it'll happen again". Shortly thereafter the album Live In Europe came out and I smirked. It was as if a door opened for me. I consider the guitar of Messin with the kid, music that opens the album, a real class of how to make sounds, how to use the volume of the guitar, saturation, tone, how to use the right hand ... anyway ...it was class more precious than I ever had and is my suggestion to any guitarist. Here in you tube has many sensational videos of him, and I emphasize as my favorite a concert of 1977 in Hammersmith Odeon of London. Perfect in everything, using mastery saturation and its matador tone. I am 60 years old and many idols ... Rory Gallagher is one of the most beloved.
Yeah he was awesome, thankfully the videos will always be on youtube but can't help think what else he could have done if he wasn't taken so early.
Yes, it is a question always asked by his admirers, even more that he was also a great composer and unlike most guitarists of his day, composed songs that fled the common place but always maintaining coherence and personality.

A lot of acts wouldn't play in Northern Ireland in the 70's and 80's. Part of the Irish Tour '74 album was recorded in Belfast.

For whatever the reason never paid attention to Rory. Lived for years in Dublin and literally walked by the Rory Gallagher corner hundreds of times (with the bronze strat up on the wall) but Thin Lizzy and Gary Moore were my thing so never cared much. Just yesterday decided to listen to him. Yesterday, my life just changed, what I have been missing!!!

Hendrix's reply re Rory in an interview is actually on film somewhere although it takes some finding. It runs along the lines of,
Interviewer: "What is is like being called the best guitarist in the world?"
Hendrix: "I think you should ask Rory Gallagher that."

I'd long heard his name but hadn't given him a chance. Last weekend, I listened to some of Rory's tunes on UA-cam. Later that day, I ordered ELEVEN of his CDs! This guy is fantastic!!!!

This is my favorite Rory song and I have already listened to you do your critique and I am watching again. I have listened to this song so much I don't want to say how many, but it is just great music. Rory is good. I loved watching videos since the audience was always into his music and he was always into his audience and the music. He had a great band, what more can you ask for.
My daughter lived in Ireland for a year, and she appreciated Irish music, but when she would say that her old man liked Rory, things changed.

Saw them live in the mid seventies. Rory seemed so happy through the gig. As if he was overjoyed with his ability and was doing exactly what he should be doing.
He was a humble man. I'm sure he was very happy to be able to make a living doing what he loved most which is make music
It depresses me I'll never get to see the man in the flesh. Just an unbelievable talent who was happy to do his own thing, ill always flick on the beat club sessions for a minute and end up watching the whole thing through, brilliant recording. Nice commentary man!

Rory is amazing. I first discovered him in 2016.while I was searching for some irish rock music. I love messin with the kid,just the smile,laundromat,used to be,toredown,and crest of a wave.
While searching for irish rock/folk rock music,I found a band called Spud. They're pretty similar to Fairport Convention.
Yeah he was super cool!
