  • In this video, I take the ferry from Tallinn, Estonia to Finland - straight to the capital city of Helsinki.
It's in the middle of December, and although the temperatures outside plummet to lows of -13°C(!!), inside the festive cheer is strong. I even have a cup of hot glogg (Estonian/ Finnish mulled wine!).
I review the boat (spoiler: it's awesome) and take you through my two-hour journey.
This is an excellent way to get from Tallinn to Helsinki - it's fast, efficient and an all-round delightful journey. I could have spent all day on board!

From -10 to -15 Celsius are normal winter temperatures in Finland except in Lapland which is always the coldest region, and usually January and February are colder than December. The Finnish buildings are planned for winter, and you can wear T-shirt at home.

Yes the hotel I stayed at was really nice and warm. I'm hoping to visit Lapland next year!

I believe some professional lorry drivers etc. prefer taking cabins and obviously whoever that wants rest and privacy. It is also possible to sleep overnight at dock on some boats or to have a roundtrip overnight mini-cruise. Generally these boats don't have other routes.

Thanks for letting me know, ah yes I believe I may have seen a boat where the cabins can be booked overnight just for accommodation. And yes it makes sense if drivers want the space as well. I kept inadvertently comparing it to the ferry from England to France which has barely any of the facilities of this ship, it was amazing!

@@ClairesFootsteps I do the crossing from Finland usually at least once a year to go shopping in Estonia because of lower prices and different shops that don't exist in Finland. Though the prices these days aren't much cheaper than in Finland. But anyway, nothing is more lovely after shopping all day than to have your own private cabin to store what you bought and to rest in. Guaranteed peace and quiet. It's not too expensive either especially if you're travelling with a couple of friends for example.

there is no ship with finnish personnel on board that doesnt have a sauna.
if it is a passenger ferry, then it will have 2(or 3) one pair for passengers genderseparation means 2 technically, and one for the personnel - less fancy but ok.
    ---
On the other hand, its a trip of under 2hrs, drink a beer read a book and then de-embark again, its not a cruise-ship after all, so even as a finn i would not think of using the sauna on such a short trip.
And we do many crazy things about saunas, but one thing we dont do there is rushing it.

Thank you for the insight! That's great to know. I'll have to do a longer ferry ride from Finland at some point as I love the idea of a sauna on board! Are there any that you recommend? 😊

@@ClairesFootsteps The Helsinki (or Turku) - Stockholm ferries are bigger and have saunas and other fun staff, Silja Line is the better one. In the off-season in winter you can find the best ticket prices, the cabin is included.

Nice that you enjoyed your glögi/glögg. However the ö is not pronounced as in clock, but it rhymes with "the", "sir" or "girl".
