Lots of people asking where the Nikon lenses are this year! Good question. Unfortunately they haven't been able to loan me some of their latest and best new lenses this year yet (e.g. 85mm f/1.2, 180-600, 60mm f/6.3 etc.), so I couldn't include them this time. I absolutely loved the Plena lens, but its corner sharpness got pipped to the post by the Canon 135mm (although I did actually prefer the overall look of the Plena's images, sharpness aside).
Great job, Chris! I've got a similar type episode planned for December. It's fun to go back and look at the year's reviews and relive a bit of it. The nature of our work is that we always have to move on to the next thing, so looking back and appreciating some of the gems (and stinkers) is fun! I appreciate you, brother!
@DustinAbbottTWI, When Dustin Abbott isn’t making his own youtubes, pastoring the church, looking after the wife and kids, and taking photos himself he watches other youtubes, and drops comments on them! 😮. Viltrox lenses quickly took over some of my Sony lenses to be my work horses (partly because I won’t feel too bad if I accidentally break one). Their two Pro line lenses are just so good that $550 each is such a steal
Thanks Christopher, I have the 12mm Astrohori on my 61 MP Sony A7R4 and it produces stunning images. It is dificult to not have tripod legs in the frame or your own shadow but a day of chasing waterfalls was so much fun and incredible sharpness. I also recently bought the 1st generation of 85 mm 1.4 Samyang, 2nd hand for just 320 euro and used in once for street photography, very much fun and good sharpness also !
Viltrox 75mm on Fuji is a God send. I absolutely love it. Never mind crappy aperture ring(to easy to turn). Picture quality wide open is stunning considering the price.
wow, nikon released so many lenses this year and not a single one showed up. 85mm f/1.2 S or Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena, 26mm f/2.8, DX 12-28mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ VR, DX 24mm f/1.7, Z 70-180mm f/2.8, Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR , Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S
The issue is that Nikon haven't been able to loan me the best of the lenses you've just listed yet (85mm f/1.2, 180-600, 600mm f/6.3). If they don't loan me the lenses, I can't afford to cover them, and they have to wait for next year's list! Hopefully I'll get to cover them soon. I've tested the Plena lens and, as spectacular as it is, it wasn't quite as sharp as the Canon lens in my tests, if you look back at the reviews.

Essentially tied in overall excellence, fun factor, but most of all what shots they enable: - nikon z 135 f1.8 - voigtlander z 50 f1 Coming up close and a phenomenal value: - viltrox 75 f1.2 (x-mount). Suggested new category ... manual focus. Might be unduly influenced by voigtlander lately, but they sure are bringing some real game.
I really love those compilation. The algorythm often only show me the ones that are related to my camera brand so it's interesting to see what other compagnies are making.
A nice trip to Turkey for a break worths a lot ;) And Viltrox 75mm f1.2 is one of the best lenses i've also ever used! What a premium and perfect lens.
These press trips aren’t usually much of a break. It’s hotel to coach or car (usually at some awful early morning hour) to venue, press briefings, back to car or coach and hotel. (Often after the bar’s closed and your only resource is the expensive minibar or a horrid vending machine.) I’ve not seen many beautiful places on press trips. A lot of hotel bedrooms all over the world that look exactly the same, though.
I have a Hanimex 28mm f2.8 which was with a bunch of lenses and camera bodies I bought as part of an estate sale. Mine looks different than yours. It is a C/Y mount lens and has a green line near the front of the lens barrel. Mine is quite a good lens. Reasonably sharp and good enough for me. It has an "MC" printed in green on the front which I assume stands for Multi Coating. Maybe yours was a bad copy or it had some other problem. I quite like my copy.
Thanks Chris, I do have the Astrhori fish-eye lens, nice lens but don't use it too often. I'm keen on my Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 though. Add the versatile, small and light Tamron 28-200 and its bigger brother Tamron 50-400 and I have a wonderful setup in my opinion together with the Sony A7R4 with 61 megapixels.
I got the Viltrox 75mm last week and with the brief time, I think it is the one I am most looking forward to using next year. I was missing a quality portrait lens in my fujifilm kit and this fit the focal length/autofocus speed/quality/price etc that I was looking for, for years.
Great video, Chris! And thanks for this year! A bit sad you didnt even mention the Viltrox 16 mm f1.8 in the wideangle section. Pretty difficult to beat that price to performance
