Does anyone else wish that Chris would do audiobooks. His voice is just so calming and tranquil.
I'd be surprised if he hasn't as yet considered.
A lot of people have been asking me to do this actually but I don't know where to start :-)
@@christopherfrost as a preacher I would start there, your own story and how you got into photography. Come to think of it; what is your backstory Chris?
@@TheStorytellingDad I recently made a Patreon video all about that :-)
I'd rather have him do reviews on Olympus and Panasonic lenses.
Here comes the wave of Canon bashers(trolls) saying it's wrong to buy Canon due to XXX reasons.
This is a welcoming product and doing no harm to anyone.
Now for those lovely 16/23/30/56 1.4 primes of theirs!
Those all come next year!
@@justinburley8659 no, Q3 as Sigma saids
20mm f1.4 A please
My first and principal channel to watch a review about this lens.
The first lens is 18-50 f/2.8? That's a good start in my eyes, they starts fixed their mistake of gatekeeping. I hope this is continue with another popular lenses.
Canon is still blocking out 3rd party full frame glass. They only opened up APSC.
@@myblujl7503 where did you get that??
Their Gatekeeping is not a mistake. Especially since the overall Camera GEAR market is nowhere it use to be. Especially since Canon has Tasked themselves with making their own Sensors as opposed to running to Sony like just about everyone else. Making sensor isn't cheap.
With that lens, EOS R7, R10, or R50 can now be usable for wedding and event photography!
I already use R7 in wedding 😂
@@SoleHunter23 Do you? From the tests I saw it has poor light sensitivity, and sensor shakes when using mechanical shutter (or electronic, don't remember)
I wouldn’t use this 18-50, honestly the RF-S 18-150 sharpness is a little better on the R7 at similar f stops (since this lens needs stopping down for excellent sharpness) as far as portraits and wedding, pair it with either the EF MK II or RF 24-70 for better IQ, sure you lose a bit of the wide end, but it seems the lens isn’t too useful at 18mm anyway.
@@mattflorez2183 The 18-150mm "honestly" isn't better, not even in Chris' own review - the only exception being at 18mm, but of course the Sigma is almost a full stop brighter.
@@Sashalexandros yup but not with this lens. RF lens works just fine
Been watching your channel since 2017, You're my favorite lens reviewer!
Aww yiss, this is the lens I'm waiting for.
Hopefully we'll see some full-frame RF mount options next!
Sigma CEO said that they won't make any soon.
Canon solely put everything in their ff line.
They probably don't allow anyone to do ff lenses at all.
Sigma got to do this because Canon don't wanna do anything in apsc lol.
@@jnhkx Don't tell anyone, because it's a really big secret that people like to pretend is not true for the convenience of the Canon bashing narrative, but you can totally use full-frame RF lenses on the crop bodies, and they work great! Wow!
Hope Canon do finally the RF Sigma Fullframe Stepp ! Please Canon Please
They wont.
They will not, because they already have expensive RF full frame lenses, that they sell.
Sigma only got the chance, because they only already had 2 APS-C lenses for RF, so there is no real competition to Canons own lenses.
No, they will never, they just want to boost apc-s cameras' sales
3rd party AF lenses from Yongnuo is here. It's a matter of time. It's 2 years from launch of RF-S(R7) to now, so we can be patient and shoot with whatever we have on hand.
@@Sashalexandros Y'all said that Canon will never allow third-party lenses at all and now look.
I’d like to add another request for a serious comparison between this lens and the old sigma 17-50 2.8. Like others, I use this lens adapted, and could use sober advice on whether it’s worth switching. Thanks!
The AF performance of this lens on a Canon is in a whole other sphere than how it performs on even the lastet Fuji cameras. It‘s the camera that makes the difference, not the lens hardware.
Why not both?
Great review! I'd actually still choose the 18-150mm because it is sharper and produces much more background blur at the telephoto end.
Would love a full frame review of this lens
The lens is not full frame, so there's no point in a full frame review
It will not cover full frame, so the cams will automatically switch to APS-C mode.
A UA-cam short would be more appropriate
@@ritrattoaziendale with Sony there is a point, because Sony allow yo to use APSC lenses in full frame mode
@@WupperVideothat's a big advantage from Sony, they allow to use APSC lenses in full frame mode
Nice! It would be interesting to see a side-by-side of the test chart against your X-H2 test of this lens, I've wondered how Canon's hi-res crop sensor stacks up against Fuji's and now they share an optic for a 1 to 1 comparison.
I have the older EF-S 17-50mm F 2.8 lens, quite heavy, longer, it has way more glass, it's amazing what they can do for mirrorless.
I can’t get over the big bottom mount ring in the lens. It makes the lens bigger. I have the sony version and I absolutely love it. I normally bring 2 lenses when traveling super light. The 18-50 and either the sigma 30mm or the sony 15mm 1.8. Thats light travels
Took a long long time for canon to approve I believe.
If I’d known this earlier I wouldn’t have gone with canon as my first Mirrorless buying my own system
Great Job Canon! Sony and Canon are the best companies in the world also Panasonic. Best autofocus to date 😌
Awesome video!
There is also the Canon 55-210mm and like the other two it is "dark". But as you say its still a very small range. Hopefully we will get more from Sigma.
Curious about how this lens works on a full frame lens. Could you test the coverage on a full frame RF camera?
This is the perfect kit lens I think - easy to carry, good range and decent optical quality. If you need best of the best, then invest in the L class
Thanks, Chris, for the excellent review. I have been using the lens since October on my Sony A6400 camera. It's a great lens. Can someone tell me the name of the melody that starts at 7:55 ?
Another casual bird photography at 18-50mm that's literally a top tier bird photo.
The Canon AF is totally smooth like butter and sticky
I tested this lens on Fuji's 26 Mpix and was not convinced either. Sent back. Maybe too much compactness to allow for a better optical performance.
I just want to see some more RF 135mm prime lens
Two points of respectful non-agreement with Christopher on this: there's also the RF-S 10-18mm wide-angle zoom, AND I do not think for a moment that the 18-150mm is "just average" quality. The RF-S 18-150mm is an excellent lens with great sharpness - especially for a kit lens! Not saying it's on par with L-series lenses, but I think it deserves much more credit than CF gives it here.
Nope. Mediocre dark lens.
Everyone’s copies may vary. Some found it on par with 24-105L, some say it’s soft
Announced a week after I went and bought into M43. Not that I would regret it, but the Canon bodies are pretty nice, now with good glass they might actually be worth a look.
M43 is pretty much stagnant market, no 3rd party would make a new AF lens for that system.
The good news, the ecosystem is quite complete. They have f1.7 zoom lenses from panasonic, f1.2 primes from Olympus, Leica designed primes, excellent and compact telephoto lenses
With GH7 or G9m2 you're good to go. For the body it's back to personal taste, but indeed canon is so comfy to use. Lumix G series, Canon, and Nikon are my favourites for a long day work.
5:07 Is there are no differences in sharpness in corners actually? I clearly see the difference in leaves zone sharpness
I hope Nikon will open their Z mount for more APS-C lenses. They are also missing constant aperture zoom lens and would benefit most from having Tamron 17-70 because of it's VR
Just use ETZ-21 on Nikon
@@zegzbrutal I didn't know that exist. Thanks
Just make the switch, experience actual Autofocus you won’t go back.
Nikon doesn't care about DX. Their DX bodies are basically Z50, Z50 (but retro), and Z50 (with no EVF).
Not wide enough for me... hoping Sigma/Tamron come out with some 3x APS-C zooms starting at 8mm and 14mm, then they can sell for M43, RF-S, Sony E, Nikon Z DX and Fuji X with really nice wide end coverage. Canon finally getting a clue is great news nonetheless
How is it vs the older 17-50 for EF-S? Seems to be at least lighter but loses the OS
Finally!!
Niceeeee
AN ANSWERED PRAYER
I had a lot of hope for this one but it looks like my old old 17-55 efs does give quite similar performance. What a pity considering the age of that lens.
The advantage of this lens is it's much smaller and lighter, which is enough of a difference for a lot of photographers.
@niklasd969 Have looked at the difference in size and weight? 🤨
@@fotografalexandernikolis yes. The canon version, especially with the adapter for the R7 is much bigger (while having IS and more versatility at both ends of the focal length). I was just hoping that almost 20 years between these two lenses would bring more improvement in image quality.
@@niklasd969 It would ... if Sigma wouldn't compromise size and weight (also price) for the IQ. See Tamron 17-70 f/2.8 for E-Mount for example what modern optics at a similar size and weight is capable of.
@@niklasd969 Or, looking at it a different way, things have progressed so much that you can get a comparable lens in less than half the weight. And arguably much cheaper if you factor in inflation. Judge it for what it does, not what you wanted it to do.
Hello Chris do think this lens would be a good match on a R 10/50 camera with their less demanding sensor? I would have liked Canon to offer better zooms. Thanks and Keep em Rolling!
Thanks for your generous support! Yup, the lens should be fantastic on an R10 / R50.
@@christopherfrost Thanks for the reply!
I used to pray for times like this
I still scream for Sigma to release full frame lenses, and the fact that they recently said they don't yet have any plans for full frame lenses on Canon cameras breaks my heart ( T^T)
It's Canon who controls this
That is what you get for buying Canon. It's your fault.
I've seen Tony and Jared, now to come to Christopher to see if this thing is actually sharp! Aaaaannnd...it's pretty good. Maybe I should save this one for use on the R10 if I ever get one. But mind you, I'm only saying that because I already have sharper options for using on my R7, such as the Sigma EF 30MM f/1.4 Art. But if I didn't then I'd be getting this one for sure!
I have an R10 and an R50 and actually chose the less megapixels out of fear that the R7 will massacre budget lens. Safe to say I was right. When I’m rolling in it, maybe that’s when I can grab an R7 and put L glass on it
How would this compare to the adapted EF-S 17-55mm Canon 2.8. on a R100-R7?
Optically not much different, but size matters
Its me or the middle of the image always have low contrast? The corner looks better at 30/50mm than the middle lol
Dropped Canon a month ago, they slept way too long. I love my Sony.
Good for you. I hope that you got something that works best for what you do.
@@justinburley8659 Absolutely love it Justin, I should have moved earlier, I was a canon shooter for 15 years.
Not a lens and certainly priced to sell imo. However, I’m keeping my EF-S 17-55/2.8
Thanks for the review
On sony bodies it was already small, but here, with canon body it looks ridiculously tiny.
so this one doesnt work or canon R or Canon r6??
@christopherfrost just out of curiosity. You know that third party CROP "EF-S" lenses (say Sigma DC's) while adapted on FF R's won't be cropped automatically, unlike what happens with Canon's own EF-S that gets cropped without any override possibility. What about this lens instead? This will be automatically cropped on your R5, or it will be show the full picture, with black borders, as being a third party lens? Can you test the behaviour? Should be less then a a minute 🙂
As far as I remember it crops automatically
@@christopherfrost Thanks Chris!
Too late... I already went with Sony instead. Still curious to watch though :)
They need to fix the fuji version, we cant use it for video when zooming
This one has that same issue. I think the Sony version does too.
@@kevindiaz3459 not good
Sigma 18-35 F1.8 ART VS Sigma 18-50 F2.8 DC DN
What's better
You'd already know if you needed the 18-35 1.8.
How is it different from canon 17-55 2.8 Is Usm? If I have the canon, is it worth the change to the sigma for the R7? Is a comparison between these two possible?
Bruh look up the size and weight difference.
The Sigma lens is smaller and lighter while offering comparable optical performance. The old EF-S lens has image stabilization as a bonus, however it is obviously an older system so the R7’s IBIS alone can probably outperform it quite easily. If you already have the Canon lens, it’s probably going to come down to how much the size and weight matter to you.
I've got the 17-55mm on my 90d. It's a great lens but it's almost as big as my tamron 70-200mm f2.8 g2...
That is a good question I did ask myself as well. Yes it is a lot smaller and lighter. People buying a new lens will definitely go with this one. If want to switch from the old to this one is probably a question if the advantage in weight and size with the loss of IS and focal length is worth the 5xx dollar/euro. Looks like there is not too much difference in optical performance. Sounds like a very personal decision.
Finally Canon let the 3rd party lens producers. There is no point to ban them from producing lenses for RF Mount.
distortion ?
Buddy, which lenses WILL work exceptionally well on the R7????
Very expensive ones :-)
RF28 pancake
I'm not holding my breath for fully compatible electronically compatible full-frame lenses. I just don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon. In fact, I think hanging on in the hope it will is just not worth it.
Chris, when are you going to start doing Olympus and Panasonic lens reviews?
Could you test the lens in full frame camera? Maybe Canon allow to use full frame mode 🤩
plus RED Komodo and Komodo X owners!
Shame the corner sharpness at wide angle is poorer than at telephoto. Just when you need it for landscapes. Telephoto portraits corner sharpness not so important.
Sigma's 10-18 f2.8 seems to be fairly sharp for other systems, so hopefully it works well with the R7.
The 10-18mm will be much better for landscapes. Just wait a few more months
So miffed its not full frame - I loved the EF 1.8 version!
Sigma 18 35 f1.8 vs sigma 18 50 f2.8???
Is it just me or the contrast in center is bad?
it's a disaster
extreme
Please test on R5
The r5 is full frame and this lens is for aps- c only
@@stevebell3809 The RF mount on an RF-S lens is identical to the mount on all RF lenses, and RF-S lenses are compatible with all EOS R System cameras. However, full-frame EOS R System cameras, when fitted with an RF-S lens, will automatically crop the image area to match the APS-C coverage of the lens.
I think this work on sigma 18-50 too, Chris said it's cropped automatically on his R5
I was excited till I saw it wasn't for full frame 😢
If I'm right, they only opened the APS-C RF mount for third party manufacturers autofocus lenses, for now.
With a constant aperture it'd be enormous on fullframe equivalent, at least for my hand 😅
would be an amazing zoom range for full-frame cameras haha

India🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Who gave Sigma the courage to charge a high price for such a low quality lens?
that lens looks like a toy like the original Canon 18-55mm lens
The Nikon kit lens 16-50mm is slower b it, cheaper, smaller, has stabilization and is MUCH sharper than either the Canon or Sigma. This lens is a disappointing in comparison
Is it a constant f/2.8 and good in low light situations?
Funny how Canon has only relaxed its no third party RF lenses policy for APS-C, not FF....
They are waiting until they are officially going bankrupt to allow it on their only mount that is still alive.
@@evrythingis1 Canon has over 50% of the market share. Even with Sony’s content creator marketing, Canon won’t be going anywhere.
@@justinburley8659 What was their market share 15 years ago?
@@evrythingis1 That was 15 years ago. Canon is still dominating the market even with welcome competition. You’re trying to make it seem as if Canon has fallen off, but fact of the matter is that they are still as popular as ever. People just have more choices now. (And Sony has better marketing. People listen to influencers as if they aren’t paid or given special privileges to present new gear)
@@justinburley8659 No, Canon literally isn't still dominating the market like they were 15 years ago. This flop is a good background for the coming similar Tamron to shine.
Ah, sigma and her bad corners on aps-c f2.8 zooms..... But this time the center is sloppy, too.
Wide angle corners are barely usable when stopped down past diffraction limiting aperture.... just wow

also it doesn't go as wide as the kit lens and never really gets sharp at wide angle.

It would be a good lens if it was sharp. I'll pass on this one.

Make the switch experience actual autofocus.
To little too late Canon. I'm never coming back. You ban all third party lenses, then only allow them on your crop sensor bodies. I've switched to Fuji and the colors just blow my R6 out of the water. I'm still salty after buying that body, the 85mm Viltrox, and then Canon banning all third party lenses.
It's not like your R6 and viltrox stop working. I still have a Yongnuo 35 and 85 RF. It's not impact by firmware updates.
@@zegzbrutal Correct, but there are no new lenses available. Meanwhile Viltrox is putting out better and better lenses, for less than half the cost of Canon. I bought the R6 before Canon told 3rd parties to stop making AF lenses, so I got screwed.
Canon isn’t reading your comment…
It's not a great lens for photography, poor sunstars, lot's of chromatic aberration. Good for video though.
Yeah I still own my 7D. Heads up. Canon doesnt care about Crop. Fact Sigma is allowed to produce a crop lens for crop RF mount should tell you all you need to know. Don´t fall for it. And dont fall for Canon crop.
Well judging by their body options Canon is the only company except for Fuji that actually takes crop sensors seriously. And Fuji doesn’t have the autofocus of Canon. Heads up!!!!
@@BlendyStick If you ignore Sony that`s true.
@@GregorMima Ah yes, the Sony line that doesn’t even come equipped with evf’s
@@GregorMima Ignore Sony? I was actually specifically thinking of Sony with that statement. The a6700 was such a huge disappointment. No AF joystick, only a single card slot and the burst rate is gimped to protect the position of the a9 and a1 in the lineup. (Which they of course do on the a7 line as well) So, it feels very obvious that these days Sony only consider crop a starting point for upselling.
I want to remind people that this is just a calculated move by Canon to lure people into the RF system, and they only do it because they are incompetent in releasing any good RF-S lenses.
Canon is not worth investing on unless you're ready to go for the most expensive glasses. Their mount is proprietary, and they only allow SELECTED lenses to be released in RF mount. Now imagine this greedy corporation looking at Sigma or Tamron's very good to excellent yet affordable lineup and think: "Hm, I want them to compete with my own lenses." Aint no way in hell that happens 😂
"A calculated move"? It's a multi-billion dollar tech company, not a cartoon villain. Their calculated move is to make people buy more cameras? Shock and horror, a camera company trying to sell cameras! Perish the thought!
@@BlendyStick yes they are a corporation trying to make money, and we as customers buying into a system deserve more than Canon's cheap baiting of: "We are becoming more open to idea!" (from an executive). Some people might buy into this lie thinking more 3rd party lenses will come soon 🤣
I just despise their corporate hogwash
Man, I don’t care. I’m going to take good pictures regardless. That’s what everyone should do. Photography isn’t a competition. It’s about preserving memories and making art. That can be done with any camera!
canon dictating the ugly tapered aps-c design they put on their crop lenses is just sad :/
It’s not Canon’s fault. Sigma made the lens small for E L mount originally. They are not willing to redesign the housing for RF due cost.
@@zegzbrutalit is, it doesn't look that way on other mounts...
Why on earth is anyone investing their money in a Canon system
Because it's a competent system? Just look at Fuji AF problem that plagued the flagships
Why would anyone "invest" in a camera system in the first place. Enjoy yourself more.
Just bought an R5, happy to explain all the reasons I chose that over moving to Fuji, Nikon, or Sony after spending a week with rentals of each. (Rented a R5 and Z8, borrowed an Alpha 1 and X-T5 from friends)
1. Canon's auto focus is just the best. Of all the ones I tried, it's insane just how fast and accurate the R line focuses. Some of the others were decent, but none were quite as snappy and accurate as the R5 (at least not to me)
2. I was coming from a canon dSLR and had already invested a fair amount into EF glass, those adapt super easy to my R5.
3. Ultimately a camera is a tool. Use whichever tool gets in your way the least. In my case I already know and understand Canon systems, so the R5 was the easiest for me to dial in the way I wanted.
Because we're all competent photographers?
Because they got the EF lens still. And at some point hoping more cheaper high quality RF lens drop in the future.
sigma is wasting their time with this crap. they should be expanding the I series lineup. No one should work with Canon given what they’ve done blocking third parties and deciding who can or can’t develop for their mount or which types of lenses. this is a dictatorship and Sigma should not reward Canon’s behavior.
Actually, Nikon did the similar thing...
Or maybe... You might just want to do a boycott movement for Canon's events
@@GungKrisna12they both rushed their first gen mirrorless cameras to market to try and claw back Sony’s market cap advance without flushing out their lens lineup. So to catch up, they decided to lock out third parties then decide how, what, and when third party lens makers come onboard. no one should reward that. open it up to all as it’s always been.
Dude, calm down. Sigma is not going to block revenue streams lol.
I am sorry, my friend you are just dead wrong here, you might not like Canon or any other brand for that matter( to tell you the truth I have been a harsh critic of Canon's resistance to the introduction of third party support into the RF mount) but you have no right to dictate the business decisions that Sigma or Canon take especially those that might lead to the establishment of a robust third party lens ecosystem to the benefit of those who are holding on to their gears or are invested in the system and don't have the means to jump ships. And third party support takes some time, do you think Sony opened up the E mount immediately after the release of the first alpha camera? It took them 3 years if I remember correctly, might be more. The company needs to recoup their investment before allowing players into the system, especially those that are bound to cannibalise a share of the market in which they operate in.
@suchetdas5392
Only comment with thought and sense.
Also EF isn't as 'open as it always was'.
EF mount is reverse engineered but Canon never officially shared it with third parties.
How much do you have to disrespect yourself to buy third-party lenses and get such poor results in image quality? And this is what most of the Canon “users” were waiting for, seriously?
LOL, Canon waits until they are going out of business to let 3rd party lenses onto their system. Way to late, everyone with any common sense switched to Sony over 5 years ago.
The fact that you think Canon is “going out of business” is what’s LOL.
Too bad Canon, I have sold my Canon RP 2 years ago and still sticking to my Sony A7C which is more superior and accessible to a wide range of third-party lenses from Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, Viltrox, etc!
