      Based on this video, you can perhaps make other videos like comparing same focal length lenses (say, nifty fifties) over the years, to show how they increased (or maybe decreased) in quality, ease of use and cost-to-performance ratio etc. Same can be done with cameras over the years where the megapixel stays the same (24mp in 2013 vs 24mp in 2023 for example).

    Love the use of DigitalRev music. Hilarious premise for the hypothetical. One mistake is getting an expensive 60MP FF camera, then realizing diffraction sets in 1.5 stop earlier. No lens can fix that😁

    Own an ancient EOS650. It cost me 30 quid.
    Bought a brand-new 24-70mm F4L to fit on it because somebody bought me a voucher for a camera shop for christmas without realising everything I own is obsolete. Now that's a thousand euro lens on a 30 euro camera.
    The results were stunning. Even image stabiliser' worked. I don't think anyone in Canon ever thought the combination would be joined together. But it works flawlessly.
    A bit extreme, but it gave noticeably better pictures that the original 28-80 I had.

    Love the new video format! It's a lot of fun to see you do something other than technical reviews. Personally, I'd go cheap camera pro lens. Good glass is good basically forever, good bodies typically become 'outdated' after about 4 or 5 years.

  • @AlexanderBecker2009
    @AlexanderBecker2009 Рік тому +57

    I guess it would have made more sense to compare the 28-70 f2 to the 24-85 f4-7.1 - so you would have compared two r lenses, one cheap and the most expensive zoom lens in the r-system.

    • @hsuray1304
      @hsuray1304 Рік тому +13

      Or use camera thats from 1995 to pare with 28-70 f2

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx Рік тому +4

      a fairer comparison would have been as well
      I think we consider for example the R7 or R10 with a RF-S 18-150 as well as budget lens with higher end camera. Since it was anyways FF vs APS-C i dont see the sense in comparing the worst possible lens from 30 years ago on a R5 vs a pretty decent, not even cheap camera from 2023 AND „superior“ glass
      All i can say this video is a bit misleading. Cheap glass is not directly bad.
      I love for example some super affordable, yet very good lenses. And except for a very few lenses (600mm 6.3 zoom and a 135mm 2.8, radioactive vintage lens from the 60s) basically all my lenses are noticable cheaper than my R7
      And despite having cheaper glass, none of them is in any way too bad or worse than expensive glass:
      EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM, basically the only good performing „premium“ kit lens we have from canon.
      Asahi Takumar 50mm 1.4 vintage lens, cheap but awesome (just not too sharp but amazing sharp considering its from 1961 thanks to thorium inside the back element)
      EF 28-135, especially great on full frame, but not so much on APS-C
      Sigma 50mm 2.8 macro lenses, partially even 105 or 100mm ones somewhat cheap
      Canon 70-300 lenses, the older, cheaper 75-300s also on full frame usable
      and so many more! All of them cost anywhere between 20 to 200$

    • @officialtiimo
      @officialtiimo Рік тому

      I was thinking the exact same thing. I don't think it makes sense to compare two lenses for this if one of them is no longer in production and hasn't been for some time.

    At extremes it was a forgone conclusion what would be interesting would be to throw in a balanced setup - say Canon R8 + RF24-105 f/4. I suspect this would smash it. The advantage of extreme setups is when you save the money you can upgrade the neglected half of the kit and you see a step change in results

      As long you make up your own opinion for a buying decision then…
      The thing is, you get a lot of cheap, yet good performing lenses as well, in the canon world just a few i have also experience with:
      ef s 17-55 2.8
      ef 50 1.4 or 1.8
      ef 28-135 is usm
      ef 28-105 3.5-4.5
      many vintage lenses
      many canon lenses in general
      many 3rd party macro and portrait lenses
      I personally love a modern, faster body (EOS R7) and to use „budget“ glass like sigma 159-600 adapted or the RF 800 F11 or many listed above. The thing is you should not get too bad glas for a better camera, and this tamron 28-80 is probably one of the worst picks possible (just the raw numbers… over 30 year old KIT LENS for like 10$ or for free compared to a „cheap“ but modern, brand new 700$+ body?
      mount on the R5 in this comparison even a RF-S 18-150 and its outperforming the 24-70 F2 in most things

    One thing to note on more "expensive" cameras is the shooting experience. I love Fuji's style but their AF system leaves a lot to be desired. Bought myself an A7IV and never looked back. It's just so easy to capture what you want, it feels like it knows what subject you're trying to take a picture of.
    Other than that, more expensive cameras usually have more buttons, including front and back dials, and custom buttons for various functions.
    Just my two cents.

    That's actually an excellent question to ask, especially for beginner or when it's time to upgrade from kit lenses. Cheap or entry level camera + pro lenses makes more sense to me, when getting more dedicated as an amateur photographer. I had great time with a cheap camera like a Canon 800D, I rented a EF 24-70 F/2.8 for a week-end it was a game changer. Also, starting to build a collection of good lenses leaves open the option to upgrade the body at a later stage while keeping the same lenses.

    So without having watched the video yet. My thoughts on the subject are; If you want the best picture quality possible, cheap body and good glass is probably the best bet, often the sensor in the entry level cameras are the same as in the high-end cameras, as long as they are the same sensor size ofc. That said for me personally I find it MUCH more joyful to shoot with a really nice camera body with a cheaper lens. Entry level bodys are aimed at beginner photographers and it tends to really show, they have loads of modes for beginners that I would never use and that just get in the way. Also cheap bodies often lack some more advanced options I want. Lastly high-end bodies often just feel so much nicer to handel with much better build quality.

    Just went sailing for a week and didn`t want to bring my high end equipment on the boat. So I just used my old Sony A7 mark 1 with the wonderful Sony 24/105 F4 zoom lens. You can easily get this combination used for around 1000,- Euro. As the lens ist good, the outdated body really doesn`t do much "harm" ... obviously a bit less extreme than your example, but a real life implementation of the same principle. (PS: also brought my Sony RX10 iii for all my zoom and video needs; used around 700,- Euro. The only thing I would add next time would be one or two cheap primes like for example my sony 28mm F2 and/or my 50mm F1,8 for the low light stuff) ... Video idea ... best affordable travel combo, curious to see what your choice would be.

    This was a good laugh Christopher. I thought perhaps you scrapped the very bottom of the barrel however with the Tamron lenses…😂🎉

    I'm in the "Too Expensive camera + Cheap Lens" group. A7S-1 running ancient Canon FD and a few more modern 3rd party fast primes. Sniffing an A7-3 or maybe A9-1 in the next while.

      I put my camera down once in a desert. It died immediately. Alas - this is different sand and it is wet.
