I was at the Grand Canyon for 2 weeks in 1998 and was very careful exploring around, and I remember seeing this young lady sitting at the very edge of the cliff within inches doing some sort of yuga? or meditation? and I thought that was quite risky.... I hiked to the bottom crossing the river to Phantom Ranch where I spent 7 days.... Wonderful experience, but you also have to be mindful of Rattlesnakes as I saw one near Bright Angel Trail.... The other few days was touring around the South & North rim of the canyon.
Yeah, it's not like the Grand Canyon moves around all shady like lol. So if the hole stays in the same spot, then the idiot must be moving toward the hole. It's like railroad tracks, they give you a pretty good idea of where the trains going to be.😂
@jct4418 Okay let people do what they want. But destroying nature by building man made BS is not the solution. Humans need to be responsible for once.
A sign should be put up. "Loose gravel with a drop off. Yep, you could fall. It's a long way down. Buzzards will get to your body before we do. They go for the eyes first."
Replace signs with a painted line, then a rail, then a fence, then a wall, then a safety catch net, then just fill the canyon so there's nothing to fall into, but when someone trips on a grain of sand, they'll sue because it wasn't their fault or responsibility.
Lawsuits against national parks rarely succeed. You end up in federal court, and up against the federal laws that crafted the parks as wild, and dangerous places. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes, but not lawsuits.
This will continue because there is no shortage of nit-wits in this land. There are more and more each and every day. The biggest problem is we have become a nation of people who need (for some weird reason) to be noticed. We have a new "Look at me...Look at me" generation with cell phones who simply need to have others notice them.
I’ve hiked the Grand Canyon 3 times, I’m sure many others hiked it more than I have. Thing is there are plenty of signs about dangers of falling & dehydration. It’s all about common sense. I was amazed each time heading down or up Bright Angel, people running down without water. Easy to walk down but going back up to the rim is slow and hard. Distance is deceiving.
I don’t agree. Let people go where they want. That’s what makes the parks so great. Vast openness and beauty but be prepared to suffer the consequences of falling off
You can't cure stupid... I've have backpacked in the canyon 5 times. I have never once disrespected it's awesomeness and my personal insignificance in relationship to it's power to take my life. It's time to start making people personally responsible for their own actions.
Common sense would keep anyone from falling into the Grand Canyon by keeping them away from the edges of trails, rims, and out croppings, but as the old saying goes common sense isn't so common.
It's not as if they can't read the signs or instinctively know to not stand/sit on the edge of the canyon or cross the barriers, but there will always be that guy or girl or cow without sense.
Apparently the park needs to have all visitors a psychiatric evaluation because the park is safe but then you have stupid people and that's what you can't fix
Not the park. People cannot be allowed to be so freakin’ ignorant and irresponsible. It’s their choice if they wish to ignore the rules and get themselves hurt or killed. That’s it. Responsibilities, people. It’s just not that hard.
I wonder what’s going through the mind of someone who falls. They are on vacation, thoughts of future events, thoughts of health life is going, what they have, plans for tomorrow’s activities and so on. Then the moment of hard time reality. As the split second of the moment as they fall seeing the hight of the fall and as they fall faster by the second and as the hard ground comes closer. I just wonder what really is going through their mind as It Is all about too end. Life really is short when living on the edge. CWA
This is the problem today..."What is THE PARK doing to keep people safe?" Maybe they should make visitors take an IQ,, Comprehension and Common Sense Tests!
We all need to focus on increasing the ANIMAL HABATAT!!!! We need to push Legislation to increase the size of federally protected land and Sea by 100x. And we need that space protected from hunters, roads, low flying aircraft, fishermen and tourists that litter and create waste. The DEVELOPERS are winning :(. every ocean has a line of houses on it, every lake and every river has houses being built on them. The natural habitats we have need to be protected on both land and sea. No fishing and netting zones need to be established. in 50 years the only way you will be able to see animals are 1. as pets, 2. in a Zoo and 3. In a small fenced off preserve. There will be no Habitat left for our grand children and the ocean will be mostly empty unless we act now. Mail your Congressmen and Senators and President.
I feel so bad for the people who have to put their lives at risk to rescue grown people who decided to risk their life because they don't like barriers, or they want a picture that nobody will care about but them. You aren't going to feel very cool when you're being scraped off the ground so the public doesn't have to feel grossed out when we go out to enjoy nature, behind the safety barriers.
These 3 TV news casters sound like they just escaped from a junior high school play. The flat tone; the flat affect; missing words, incomplete sentences. Damn. Talk about your amateur hour!
In 1964, 5 of my friends and I rode miles to the bottom of the canyon and back. Thanks to the miles being smarter than many human park visitors, we 6 had safe, though sometimes scary, trip down and back!!!!🐴
Been there, and some people young and old do some stupid things just because they think the people on their group are going to be impressed, and the more they tell them not to get to close the more they get closer
This is why we can't have nice things. Eventually, we will either have a giant net across the entire canyon to catch idiots or they will have to close the entire canyon except a 1-2 "safe" viewpoints, ruining the experience for everyone else. The lawyers will see to it.
No there doesn't need to be any changes people just need to start calling other people out for their stupidity I see videos of people doing stupid s*** at the Grand Canyon all the time and nobody calls these people out for it start calling them out cause I'm ruining it for everybody
It’s all the people that are stupid enough to jump over the railings to think it’s funny enough to get a picture and then they lose their balance and they fall to their death
The park does enough to keep people safe.
Don’t blame the park.
Blame the people too, some people are stupid and live on the edge or go to places where they have a risk of falling or getting hurt
@@ystopgaming3757 blame the people ONLY

Nancy Meyer- you are so correct! No changes, people need to take accountability
Yes, let people take responsibility! Like Mark Twain said, "If you make something fool-proof, God will just make a better fool.
People go over the barriers. Therefore, they are responsible for their own lives.
Most of the park has no barriers. It’s massive.

Just did bright angel and ya you could jog down but coming back is no joke
It’s not the height that kills em it’s that damn gravity
Yes, that damn canyon "floor " is hard!
The sudden stop at the bottom that kills them .
I almost died chasing my bag of weed blowing towards the edge.
Understandable
Man you should’ve let some roll off for the people stuck down there that survived 😂😂

Well ..weed tho ...
I go along with that.GradeA is worth chasing.

This is why there is rules and fences. And the more this kinda things happen the bigger the fences and the more rules get put in place.

Quite often, the responsibility takes the form of sudden death.
Yup people are careless

Situational awareness is a thing, people!
Park should not change anything, people need to be more responsible.
When will people take responsibility for their own actions? Sure, ask the park what they will do to keep people safe. 🤦🏼♂️
When you go outside put on a damn helmet. That way the people recovering the scavenged meat might find something valuable if you fall correctly.
They should have a sign saying no hats!
