  • Google Bard just got some major updates that make the AI better at helping you learn a language. AI is changing the way we learn languages, and Google's Bard AI chatbot is bringing new tools for learners. Let's explore how to speak to artificial intelligence and how it affects language education, challenging language classes and traditional study methods. It's NOT perfect by any means, but it's a powerful start, and it will only get better over time. How do you think we'll learn languages in the future?

    About me
Hola a todos 👋🏽 I’m Jerry, I learned Spanish from 0 to fluent, have taken the Spanish C2 mastery exam, and I make videos to help you learn Spanish and connect to the people and cultures that surround this beautiful language. Whether you're just starting out or want to keep improving, I've got something for you, so come aboard and join this Spanish adventure! 🥂
✍🏽 Prompts used in this video:
    1. [Back and forth conversation] Have a conversation with me, but keep all of your responses to a single sentence followed by a question for me.
    2. [Image upload - after uploading file] Describe the image in detail.
    3. [Image upload part 2 - in the same thread as #2] Now describe it in Spanish.
    4. [Translating worksheets - after upload] Translate each word in this image for me in English, and define each in both Spanish and English.
    5. [Sample current events question] Which one had a better reception, Barbie or Oppenheimer? / ¿Cúal tuvo una mejor recepción, Barbie u Oppenheimer?
    6. [Real recommendations for a trip] Give me a list of fun activities to do in Mexico City and some Spanish vocab associated with each activity

Another use for Bard is parallel translations. You can feed in a text in your L2 and ask it to translate in table form, with the 1st column for L1 and the 2nd for L2. I ask for a new row per sentence. At present its concept of a sentence is sketchy, so I tell it to break on stops, commas and question marks. If it's a dialog which shows the names of the speakers as in a play, tell it the names and ask Bard to list them in a 3rd column on the LHS. Then you can click a button at the bottom of the table to upload directly to Google Sheets, or copy and paste to any spreadsheet or word processor.
Very handy - saves a huge amount of faff.

So. I have now tried for 10 minutes to make Bard have a conversation where it answers me in 1 sentence, plus a question back. And it tells me "Yes I can do that" and then does NOT do any of those things. I cant make Bard understand it even tho Bard repeatedly tells me it can do that.

Well, as a person living In a foreign country and having to learn a language...what would help a lot more is if Google took the 15second limit off the live translation app. You can't follow a conversation when you have to start again every 15seconds. It's all I need. It would be vastly more useful than what's offered here, and also Google don't get fed my documents which I really don't trust.

The optimal interaction scenario would be an interactive verbal conversation with subtitles in the language with the AI correcting you grammer dynamically, including diction and providing suggestions. . If we get there, let me know, because that is comparable to speaking with a native and the level I need to completely self teach.

I speak both English and Japanese. I tried Japanese chat with Google Bard. The sentences were mostly fine, but very formal. This is not how you would talk with friends. I tried to get it to speak more colloquially but it didn't last very long. This is quite limited in usefulness in my opinion.

Interesting! I look forward to connecting this to augmented reality headsets, so I can speak something in English, then have the system play back a translation in my ear, which I then speak. It will be possible to have a real time conversation with a real person, although with a delay time factor. These back and forth spoken statements are then recorded, so that I can return at the end of the day to review what I have learned. Learning a language will become five times easier.

Too bad, I started to learn the German sign language. But maybe some day an AI will support this as well.
    Fun fact about Bard:
Few weeks ago I "explored" Bard, I asked him who is the oldest human whose name is known. Bard said it's Ötzi and that he lived about 3200 bc (Bard said an actual year). But Ötzi is not this guys real name, it was given to him today by us. So I told him that and asked him again the same question. Bard answered a name I don't remember anymore and a date around 2000 bc. So I asked him if there is't a known name of a pharaoh. Then Bard finally told me about a pharaoh who lived over 4000 years bc. I don't know if he is the oldest human whose name is known but Bard doesn't know it as well, I guess. :)

Can you show how to train Bard to find out your level and known words so it can adjust itself?

    • @JerryRegistre
      @JerryRegistre  9 місяців тому +2

You’ll have to do this with every conversation, and it’s a bit tricky, but a few options you have are:
      - If you’re working in English, use the adjustment tool and ask it to be simpler or more formal. This isn’t perfect since it’s not attached to a level, but it can help make answers tougher or easier.
      - You can use descriptive phrases to ask it to change its level. Things like “respond at a 1st grade level”, “respond at a university professor level”. But Bard isn’t the best at following instructions.
For you, I’d actually recommend checking out the ChatGPT Voice video. I’ve had more success asking ChatGPT to tailor to a specific level like “beginner”, “intermediate” or “A2”, “C1”

During the chat Bard would keep providing me with English translations in brackets, even when I directly asked him to stop. Haha yeah. I figure they are leaning into how they bring value differently from the rest of the language learning market... and that would be their characters, animation, and marketing... for now. I'm expecting more animated shorts, entertainment designed to introduce language in silly way, and moving into other education fields. I know they are moving into music, already in math, and if I had to bet money, I'd guess they'd be smart to move into teaching basic coding too. Their ChatGPT Duolingo Max stuff... who knows how that's doing. They mostly just announced that likely to time it along with the AI hype and their earnings report, which clearly worked because DUOL skyrocketed immediately after announcing their likely half-baked AI feature...

AI is so powerful, it’s almost like if we were able to add up all of human knowledge into one person, the applications are endless.
I do worry that it could incentivizes not critically thinking, or learning how things work, because you can just use your personal AI, similar to how I feel the internet has affected me but worse.
Also it should be called an intelligence emulator, not artificial intelligence, as it is incapable of creating something completely original, it can only copy and morph things that it has gotten form other humans, the name AI is a bit misleading and probably just used to create hype and get investors.

00:58 🗣 Google's Bard AI enables users to have conversations in their target language, even without native speaker friends, allowing for private practice and error correction before real-life interactions.
01:37 📸 Bard stands out by allowing users to upload images for description, helping learners practice vocabulary related to colors, shapes, and more in their target language.
03:38 🌐 Bard has internet access, allowing users to ask real-time questions and receive responses based on current events or specific topics, enhancing practical language learning.
04:40 📚 Bard's unique feature allows users to share their conversations, enabling language teachers to provide personalized feedback and guidance for improved language skills.
07:37 🚫 Bard has limitations, including support for a limited number of languages, occasional inaccuracies, and difficulty in following specific instructions for structured responses. Additionally, it lacks a mobile app and voice feature on mobile.

Hey friend, my apologies if there were parts that were hard to follow. I try to read every comment to improve these videos bit by bit, so I’ll try and see if I can make these even easier to follow for people that are trying to copy the prompts.
For now I’d recommend pausing the video to copy any prompt you’re interested in if they didn’t stay on screen long enough. I’ll also see if I can copy some of these prompts into the video description a little later today. Hope this helps and cheers 🙏🏽
