James Marsters is an American, but, like Tony/Giles having different English accents, his American accent isn't his real accent. I'm entertained by the predictions.
James Marsters (Spike) is an American with a normal American accent. So he's an American doing an impression of a Brit doing a bad impression of an American accent. Apparently Anthony Head told him to emphasize the R's.
When Spike realizes he can kill demons it’s a game changer. Spike trying to sneak up behind Xander and hitting him with the wrench will always be hilarious. Obviously he’s my favorite character. Lol
I love to hear you guys hypothesizing. You are so right on some things and so wrong on others. I can't wait for you to find out the ones you totally nailed. LOL
I loved the whole end discussion, y’all crack me up! 😂😂 My favorite part of this episode is when Riley says “You’re coming back out.” No argument, no trying to do it instead of Buffy, just support and a plan to get her out safe. That’s what sold me on the Riley/Buffy relationship.
The lighting is not bad. If it is easier on your eyes, I say go for it. Both Spike and the boy scout were speaking truths to the gang at times this episodes. And by the way, we had phones in the 90's and before. They were in our homes, at restaurants, hotels, and on the the streets in phone booths among other places. We called each other all the time . . for hours at a time if people were local.
By the way Mikey, to answer your question, no, Spike's attempt at an American accent sounds nothing like James Marsters' actual accent 😂 James sounds very California irl. Imagine being an American actor playing an English dude who's trying and failing to do a southern American drawl. Wild.
This episode was the first to be aired in January 2000, so we’ve officially exited the 90s and entered the aughts (though I’m not sure which episode was the first to be filmed in the 2000s).
The opening dialog is extremely important..Buffy expresses that she basically has expectations of Riley fitting into a box she has put him in. I always think reactors should just have dark backgrounds instead of big piles of plastic figurines or posters and toys. This episode has my favorite “suspension of disbelief” non-reality moments when Riley has so much super strong..twine in his little belt that Buffy can fly at terminal velocity while he strips it out by hand, and then reels her back in two or three times and she’s back..I love it..
Really glad you're still liking Riley, by this point the nay sayers were calling him "Captain Cardboard" because he wasn't Angel. He has some great one liners.
Finally people who appreciate Riley. He got so much undeserving hate back in the day from the Buffy Angel shippers. I’ve always loved Riley and thought he got the short stick.
He was fighting for Buffy and wasn't willing to let it go until he spoke his mind. Once he did, he backed down respectfully. He has never said anything bad about her, just about her decision to not be with him. Which... He's right. But she also may need more time
I love Riley. He's a great guy. The haters were/are mostly into the tired, old cliché bad boy trope. That's far more boring than Riley could ever be. And it's time for Buffy to have someone to walk in the sunshine with. She deserves that.
@@732ReviewCrew Riley was frustrated that he didn't understand where Buffy was coming from. That she doesn't want to talk to him about her trauma is her decision. Saying "no" was her decision. Riley isn't owed an explanation, nor is he owed the opportunity to argue his case. She said "no". Whether or not he understands why, whether or not he agrees, it's her decision & it should be respected. Even if it's a huge mistake, it's her mistake to make. Also, speaking his mind included calling Buffy "stupid" & "self-involved". He's the one who's being selfish by insisting that she hear him out. As a Psych grad Riley should know better than to psychoanalyze someone that he hardly knows & is desiring a relationship with. There are inherent biases in his analysis. Not only due to his feelings, but to lacking key pieces of information. Buffy said she's not ready. The only reason he's not keen on believing her is that he wants to be with her. Riley's behavior at the graveyard & in the street was toxic. It's just more subtle than the usual fare. No therapist with an iota of ethics would be on board with Riley's decision & subsequent behavior. In reality, "fighting for" someone isn't romantic, it's selfish at best & controlling at worst. It is the insistence that one knows what's good for the other person better than they do, knowing what they want better than they do, or simply placing their own desires above the desires (or needs) of the other person. In any case, it's a fundamental lack of respect. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Best lines in the episode are, "Again!" and "Oh, as usual, dear." and "Really! You're not just saying that." An American actor (James Marsters as Spike) portraying a British character who has to do a phony American accent. It's such a great moment. Spike, of course was being a jerk in the moment and toying with Xander and Willow, but they (as well as fans) wouldn't take it so hard if it didn't have some truth to it. I agree with Buffy telling Giles off for dismissing the the earthquake. I would trust Buffy's slayer instincts (not her dating instincts as I will rant about a bit in the long paragraph below) over Giles Watcher instincts. Being called "stupid" of "self involved" by Riley doesn't have him, or fans, convince me he should be convincing Buffy of a relationship. What he said, even in the context, was wrong. Buffy's not acting "stupid" or "self-involved." She has genuine concerns and issues that she definitely needs to deal with before being with somebody romantically. She didn't realize that until she saw him stepping from Joe Normal into her Slayer life. It doesn't matter whether there is truth to what Riley says or not. If she doesn't deal with her issues, things get rushed. No matter the context, Riley was being rude and not respecting her or her choices. He kinda shows that he is doing badly at working under a world renowned psychologist, if that's his response to not respecting Buffy's issues, even if he doesn't know what they are. I feel more like he used his Psyche Major knowledge (a Masters program - which means he's probably also 24, but at least this time Buffy is legal, unlike Angel) to push Buffy into accepting him so quickly. Buffy getting together with Riley without dealing with her issues makes him more of Buffy's rebound (just like Parker was meant to be). And Riley and Willow have helped put Riley there. If he waited, perhaps her issues may have been delt with (like they heathily on there way to doing before Angel returned from hell at the beginning of S3 with Mr. Platt and Buffy leaving the Claddagh ring in the spot Angel "died"). By episode's end, Riley convinced Buffy to be in a relationship too early. I feel more like he feels he can fix and "make it right," if she's not to "self involved," rather than I feel like he likes her. We'll see where it actually goes from here, one way or the other, though.
Loved the reaction as always. Halfway through season 4 now with this very fun episode thanks mainly to Spike with honorable mention to Xander. Having Spike discover he can battle demons is a great development. Looking forward to the rest of season 4 to see which (of any) of your predictions come true. The rest of the season has some terrific episodes along with the continued balancing of the drama, action, humor & the completely unexpected with maybe one exception for my least favorite of season 4 (which still does have its moments).
Episode title word play. Obviously there's the plot point of the potential doom of opening the hell mouth, but also Buffy's fear that the relationship is destined to fail. Buffy's caution is a weak excuse, given her own scoobie situation, but it is also her natural inclination to fall back on the lore that the Slayer fights alone. Buffy's fear of a doomed relationship also nicely, and subtly, brings to mind Giles' reservations about the scoobies in his hilarious "doomed" comment, as the scoobies head off to the Bronze at the end of Season 1. Other references of this light-hearted comment would be spoilers, so this one is good enough at this point. On another note, I also like that Riley says they can't 'fry cook' alone, which from his perspective is referring to his military op, but is a nice script nod to the scoobie angle. And hilariously, unbeknownst to Riley, there's the addition of Hostile 17 to Buffy's little army. All he knows is she has friends, which includes a friend Zzan-derrr's. LOL
Doomed was a great fun episode with the comedy between Spike and Xander hilarious. It's almost like the 'Odd Couple' the two of them in the basement is a sitcom I would pay to watch. The last part when Spike gets recognised by Riley and tries to put on an American accent was hilarious, and then trying to get Willow and Xander to go out with him and try and kill something, 'oh come on', great comedy.
I am glad you like Riley, I remember at the time this aired people in the fandom really disliked him. I think the reasons are because he was the guy that came after Angel and there were a lot of Buffy-Angel shippers still around and also because like you said, he is bland, and I personally think that the actor who plays him (Marc Blucas) has very little chemistry on screen with SMG. People could feel it and it turned a lot of them off. At least that is how I remember it, hard to believe we watched it live nearly a quarter of a century ago!
