Big respect to Guvna Gregah for processing & editing the video !
Is so interesting hearing their Yorkshire accents w/ with Caribbean
Why do the put the K before the S in Ask...Aks dem.
@@CARLIN4737
These kids are young so I’d imagine some of them were born and lived in the Caribbean at a young age and then they grew up more in Leeds so their accents were shifting
I was in the same class as Marcus at Lawrence Oates Middle School. I am a teacher now. Today I showed this video to my class to explain aspects of racism in the UK. On a personal level, I am horrified, as we're the children in my class. Marcus had an amazingly kind nature.

Excellent documentary by Linton Kwesi Johnson for Channel 4's Bandung File. Remember the days when C4 had a "diversity" remit, to produce documentaries on topics no-one else in the mainstream would touch? This was a good example. Thanks for posting this!
Max Farrar Thanks- here's another Chapeltown documentary that I posted 1 month ago

I was born and bred in Leeds and lived there during these years - We knew our way around and never had any problems in Chapletown often visiting the Hayfield pub (now long demolished) where we the only white faces. Everyone was always polite and friendly.
It´s all down to how you treat people - treat them right, and they will treat you right in return. Simple!
Great video some of my old friends in this 👍
Lived through this, I'll always remember as a kid that Chapeltown was considered a no-go area that even the Police wouldn't go into, I guess the Police part was an exaggeration!
Rest in peace Brenda Brownie real queen in chapletown
true!!!!!
Every black or mixed know
to phone Ruth bundey when they get caught in leeds 🙌🏾
I used to go Kick Boxing at the Mandela Centre in 1987.
At that time the Hayfield was a den of weed dealing, as was the Fforde Greene, as was the Gaiety!! Don't ask me how I know that, but anyone saying otherwise either wasn't there or is pulling the wool over your eyes!
Went to school with Marcus from age 5 - 16. Great guy. RIP Satta bro......Woi !
How’d he pass away?
I'm fifty three years of age . I remember these days. My best mate Mark campion and Glen binger dad was the landlord of the Hayfield. George and Lloyd both landlord at the time .I whent to Saint Dominic on leapold Street in the day . Thanx gjk xx
Mark has flower shop on old lane beeston now
Those were the times when Uncle Tom's and Aunt Jemimas were not in charge.
This was a time when black people genuinely fought back.
8:31 THAT'S MY GRANDPA!!
in the UK, I think most us black folks have experienced racism at some point, especially by police. I experienced it at nine years old in London by a police officer...later I moved to the US only to experience it numerous times over the years. Soon I will move to Africa...it's the only place where I feel at home...the atmosphere is completely different...hard to explain.
You still see the poverty and suffering passed down to younger generations in ctown because of the way the government and police mistreated them. But the council do nothing for investment in these areas or harehills either
Tom W because if everyone who does well moves out of the area it stays a shit hole. There needs to be motivation for successful people to stay
Bollox!,I couldn't piss n Leeds without pissing on a racist white privilege bastard, said SKINHEAD,SKA MAHN!
Halton Moor is a breeding ground for n words.
Lots of investment now. It's full of middle class white people. (2021 Feb)
@@ldn876 said who?😂😂😂my guy said full of middle class white people
I lived opposite Potternewton park on Harehills Avenue from 83 till 91 and no problems at all. I sometimes went to the Hayfields pub and Colonial club that was opposite for a pint (and other things) but never once had any trouble . Maybe it was because I lived there. The police though would sometimes act like Job's Worth's or try to fill their quota's or impress their bosses or whatever. If there was any bother it was because of the Police and nothing else.
Coloured People???? TF!!!... That Public Servant needs a Slap 👋🏽
That's what they said back then 🤷🏻♂️
Is it really so bad that you seem to encourage physical violence against someone just for using a phrase?
I am surprised that some people are so obsessed by racism, in this case very mild and unintentional 'racism', that they would think that it's reasonable to attack someone for such a petty reason.
Some people need to get a grip, being lynched by the KKK is racism, some copper in the 1980's saying a word that you don't like isn't really racism is it?
@@ThatCarGuy1983 still racist
@@yikes5522 So? In africa they publicly said
"Boil white babies in a bath of acid"
To a crowd that agreed...
Yes racist
Most Definitely 👋🏾
Chapeltown is a safe place now very peaceful
It was always peaceful. It is not like clashes happened every day. If you know, you know.
No its not..
No it’s not, never was
Is it fuck 😂😂 and it never has been. An absolute cesspit
Chapeltown is a lot safer now - I lived there in the 70/80s
It's strange how everything claims down after a good riot well for a while anyway lol
I'm a white male from Lancaster and I heard of chapeltown in Leeds when I was a teenager, it had the same reputation as toxteth in Liverpool and Moss side in Manny. Also Handsworth in Birmingham and Wandsworth in London, wow 😲 it a bit mad that were all the riots were in the early 80s. This down to Thatcher she targeted the poor black communities, no wonder there was so much hatred. But I've never had no bother in the areas I mentioned in the north of England. Always music and carnival atmosphere and good food.💙👍.
Yet you’re the aboriginal 🤯
@@KarmasAbutch AM I THANX I THINK, 💙.
Margaret targeted who she felt was the cause. I would trust her judgement over yours. She was a controversial politician though a great one. That’s why she had the name ‘the iron lady’ stuck by her principles even if we disagreed with her
@@EpicAelflaed not just my opinion mate, didn't u get milk at school, or maybe ask the miners or the unions, she put a stop to all these.
Is this Linton kwesi Johnson on the voice over
Jake K Darcus Howe is the name of the narrator
б б б yea that’s where ive heard the voice
Police shouted racial words to youngsters in chapletown
Police have called black men monkeys
The main racial tension at this time was between Asians in Harehills at the bottom of Harehills Lane and Afro Caribbeans in Chapeltown across the road. I know, I lived at the other end of Harehills Lane. Nothing to do with white Brits, we had no inclination to cause racial tension. Don't invent things that never happened between the general residents of the area.

the black people went through some shat those times (and still do today)..with intelligence, togetherness and class
Because most were selling crack and heroin
I dont know if that's true or whether they were the only ones. There must be a reason for people to sell crack and heroin. Something must have made it attractive than an alternative. Anyways I was talking about what they went through and have been going through at the hands of British society and the British Government since they were invited here to rebuild the war torn slums up till Windrush to unsettle them and their children ....in Boris Johnson's terms ....treating Britian like their home......lol!
@@Hoxton66 Paul I respect your opinion and while I agree for the most, it's wrong to generalise and seperate...progeny of all immigrants and those of *White British* all do the same things- succeed and fail. If we want to be very accurate and critical, we would have to get the statistics and see, that youths from all ethnicities who are facing poverty, disillusionment, feel stunned like deer stepping from the woods into strong headlights..they grow up deprived and confused, lacking any connection to their culture or white British culture and they are bot sure about the meshed/ formed culture they have to adapt to....and this is by design
@@leos8977 yes you are right all kinds of people do them things. but look at the statistics over the years.
They are stabed or shot black British young adults mostly. Somalis....but yes you are right....but people cant say the police pick on black people only
its because the statistics there all black gangs if you want to call it gangs.
....I've got mixed race nephews and neices in my family and are all honest young adults who work so there is work for everyone so no excuses about if you are black it's hard in England for them it's just excuses .
@@Hoxton66 Well I didnt know that they break down the statistics into national origin..deeper than race.. I however know that the public's perception is warped by the media and their interests. Additionally, I think the police also their job Gov is who designs the system to pick on vulnerable class of people across the spectrum of society. They decide to implement, pull back and return stop and search ....which is dead as a duck in the water...if its aim is to stop or solve crime rather than terrorise dark skinned people..majority of people in this society are cracking on and paying taxes mind you...I suppose the Good suffers for the bad....but all good across society must face the same laws and then we will revisit the policies and arguments.... Good on your mixed-race family doing well, but there are also white and blacks doing well too.
Lived in Chapel Allerton next door for 17 years. Chapeltown is supposed to be synonymous with trouble..Never found that. I was a 25 year old white guy. I could walk through Chapeltown without a hint of fear I remember walking through Chapeltown at 2am from the Labour Club and up Chapeltown Road. Not a hint of grief I went to Mass on Sunday at the Catholic Church where 30 odd nationalities worshipped and was married there. Loved carnival in August. Chapeltown has never been an easy area but to write it off as ",trouble " is lazy and too bloody easy ...
