- Please before giving a thumbs down, most of these movies are in terrible condition, so don't expect miracles! I use a lot of electricity to enhance them as best as I can. I hope you enjoy what I do. Thank you for watching, you are appreciated greatly!
If you have any requests, please comment and I will do my best for you. As long as the requested movies are in the public domain, I can convert to colour and upload here for you to enjoy.
"Terror by Night" (1946), directed by Roy William Neill, features Basil Rathbone as the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, accompanied by Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson and Alan Mowbray. The plot unfolds when the priceless Star of Rhodesia diamond is stolen aboard a train traveling from London to Edinburgh, leading to the murder of the owner's son. Holmes is called upon to solve the case and identify the culprit among the suspicious passengers. The film masterfully weaves mystery, suspense, and deduction as Holmes employs his keen intellect to unravel the intricate web of deception, making "Terror by Night" a gripping and thrilling installment in the Sherlock Holmes film series.
This movie took 4 hours to convert to colour at 4K resolution. I hope you enjoy the end result!
If you don't like the colourisation, this movie is available in it's original black and white format on other UA-cam channels.

For me, Rathbone will always be Holmes!!
Love Basil madly but Benedict spoilt me forever. His "Sherlock!" was magnificent, as well.
It was very lucky the diamond didn't fall out of Sherlock's breast pocket when he was almost upside down on the outside of the train ....😅😅😅
Crazy to think just over a year before 1946 all the men in this film would have been fighting in WWII, witnessing all manner of unimaginable horrors.
Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes) was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery in WWI and he also served in WWII.
You can definitely see the result of wartime rationing in the actors and extras. Extras more so. I guess the "ordinary" classes were even more emaciated.
Only World War I, I believed unless you can find some records of the service for World War II. He would’ve been mid-40s at the start of the conflict so probably too old very young man in World War I though and I think his brother or cousin got killed in action he apparently was extremely courageous, hence awarding of the military cross.
And he's a youngish man even here! Image the youth full of such hell
Who in their right mind would give a thumbs down...?...brilliant films, much better than what is on TV today, no swearing, and watchable with all the family. Thank you. 24/01/2024 @ 20:35 UK 💃
I think the same people leave a thumbs down on all my videos. I think the thumbs down should be removed to prevent malicious behaviour, ie, similar channels knocking others down. Videos should be ranked on likes and not dislikes. That's just my opinion, I think UA-cam disagree with the idea though, unfortunately. Thank you for watching and your positive comment, greatly appreciated :)
@@SimonWard1 YoooouTube are the enemy of decent entertainment 🤣 I've just finished watching, most enjoyed.💃
As long as I am able to monetise the movies, I will continue to find, enhance and upload them. UA-cam gives me the opportunity to do that and for others to enjoy classic movies. It is an expensive project, only half paid back what it cost for the equipment so far, especially with the high cost of electricity. I hope to continue doing this and one day make a profit for the work I do. The thumbs down button does have a negative effect. If I upload a video and it gets 10 likes then a thumbs down, the views decline, really angers me to be honest because I just think the button can be abused by competitor channels. I almost gave up last week but I know that's what some people want me to do, so I will carry on :)
@@SimonWard1Thank you for this most entertaining film. Food for thought: other reasons for a downvote could include poor vision, large digits, carelessness, etc. 🌹
Agreed. God bless. Jesus loves you!
I say old boy, jolly good show, What !
Renee Godfrey was bloody hot .....but the ludicrous London accent 😀
Color. Why? You really lost the mood. This copy looks like it's from the 1970's, ...unfortunately. Long live the original version.
It says "Colour" in the title. Why bother watching it then leaving a negative comment when you know it's in colour before viewing. Why not just look for the original version first before slating someones hard work?!
Very clean copy. I'd love to see this clean copy in the original black and white. It was an art form, under appreciated today.
Thank you for watching. You can find the original black and white version here archive.org/details/terror.-by.-night.-1946.1080p.-blu-ray.x-264-ci-nefi-le :)
I've seen it in Black and white. It's on UA-cam if you search it. Thank you and good day.
Only colorized versions bring all films to life..b/w is bland undefined lacking form in balance and at 74 I was born in the beginning when there was NO COLOR and have seen EVERY
b/w film EVER MADE.pre and post WW2 color is life band w is bland and commonly boring
@@justintrowbridge4284 how sad that you've never appreciated the artistry of black and white film. VERY sad.

Its like a brand new movie that I've actually seen 3 times lol. A good colouration

Thank you for your hard work keeping these lovely old films alive, happy to subscribe and follow you, 😊
Thank you for your kinds words, for watching and for subscribing, greatly appreciated, thank you :)
Love Skelton Knaggs in whichever movie he appears. He had such an oleaginous manner which made him a perfectly sinister criminal character.
Thank you for your amazing channel. and for uploading these movies!
you are appreciated
liked and subbed!!🧡💛💙
Thank you so much, lovely comment and thank you for subscribing, I'm glad you are enjoying the channel. Movies wont be as fast coming at the moment as I am working out trying to make them much higher quality, each one is likely to take around 30 hours to enhance using some facial enhancing. Hoping to make each next movie as best as possible. I will be scheduling movies for Friday, Saturday and Sundays. I will enhance them during the week, so hopefully have 3 to 5 done weekly.
Thank you so much for these classic iconic films and the color restoration. Your passion and dedication to your craft hard work. Is appreciated. I am 76 and I grew up watching these movies. I knew the characters I knew the actors when I was 6 years old. Thank you for sharing❤
Absolutely my pleasure! I am glad you enjoyed it and thank you for watching.
I agree - thank you so much for this treat! Well worth the electricity used to produce it 😊
Yo i hope no interruptions otherwise i will dig it da most
Clearly. a model train was used for the external shots showing the train going around turns at breakneck speed.
This is not a Conan Doyle 'Holmes' story....but it does contain plot elements from several of the Sherlock Holmes classics.
What's one man's colour is another man's black and white!!!
I'm all for them to. be turned to colour just so that things like curtains etc can be seen in colour in there settings
I wish I could turn some things into colour and not others but unfortunately the software is limited to what it can do. I also wish I could stop it putting blue eyeliner on actors, you may have seen this in some scenes. I'm hoping the next batch of movies that Ill have done in the next couple of days will look a lot better with some new settings I worked on over the weekend :)
It's a wonderful copy ❤
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it :)
Wonderful film. Holmes always a treat! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching :)
I like the films with Dennis Hoey in them.
Having read, heard or watched every Sherlock Holmes presentation, I find it refreshing to see this production in color, even though the color is not very well done. Be that as it may, Bruce’s version of Watson ruined this series. Watson was no bumbler. However, the model RR is almost convincing.
Didn't he realize that there was a 5 pound fee for pulling that emergency stop?
What a treat! Thank you so very much. X
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching :)
I'm 61 & have always been a reader. Sherlock Holmes & Nancy Drew were my favorites!
Superb, I hope you enjoy the movie, thank you for watching :)

I honestly appreciate people like yourself for all the hard work! Costs! Your own time! to bring these wonderful timeless films to people like myself.
I mean every word! People like yourself don't realise how much happiness you bring to people like myself!
So a huge thank you❤😊😊
Wow thank you for a lovely comment, I really appreciate it! Unfortunately, the project will be coming to an end soon because on-top of the work I do, the electricity I burn, the hardware I buy, the software licenses and searching for public domain movies, there have been a lot of false copyright claims I've had to deal with. UA-cam has to take any claim serious, chances are I will be losing the channel very soon. A big company has taken it on to put in a claim on a movie that is 100% in the public domain because they are releasing it on DVD, enhanced. I don't have the energy, time or money to fight a company that size. I have asked UA-cam for an exception to the rule, but it has fallen on def ears. The malicious claimants, competitors and corporate greed will bring this channel down and also my account most likely. Even if everything turns out well, I will not be uploading many more public domain movies. I have another project I want to try, science and nature time-lapse, macro and slow motion videos. If the channel survives, that will hopefully start late next week. I am also building a website away from any third party that will have every bit of work I have done uploaded to it, too much time, money and energy has gone into this project for me to just trash it :)

Thank you Mr Ward, watching 1946 movie in 4K is awesome.
You are very welcome! Glad you enjoyed the movie :) Thank you for watching.
Ooh I love the trains and the station in this!
I can't believe how clear this is! Wow great job!!
Thank you for watching and your kind words, glad you enjoyed it.
Loved this, was prob really suspenseful when it was made but the over the top acting is comedy gold now, the femme fatal was like plank of wood, the Detective reminded me of David Walliams and the bloke in the cap/ killer at 46.30 was hilarious (voice/eyeroll)😂. Bloody loved it though!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, lot's more to come. Thank you for watching :)
The lady in this film is stunning beautiful in color. But she doesn't seem to appear in other vintage films.
Brilliant work! I've seen this movie twice but only in black and white until now! So it's the first time i see it in colour and i am amazed! You did a wonderful job!🤩🤩🤩 Thank you for the time and effort you put into colouring this movie, it's really awesome!😀
Thank you for your kind words and glad you enjoyed it :)
THANK YOU WONDERFUL TO SEE THIS IN COLOR, RENE GODFREY 9/1/1919-5/24/1964, BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS. SHE WAS A ☆
You're very welcome, thank you for watching :)
I used to put on little plays and I would dress up like Renee. ⭐💃
I was a little actress and I used to have little plays. I put on a hat and costumes and I imitated the actress the actress I even had a little box that I used as coffin prop😊
Lovely :)
.... fortunately I have the facility to watch this episode in black & white, as it was intended.. which I might add, I really much prefer... pretty soon I reckon all originality will be lost to the ages of our overwhelming & cluttering technological enthusiasm..... saddens me somewhat... nevertheless..., I enjoyed it immensely...so I thank you kindly...🙃
Every video I do is in the public domain. What I will do after Christmas is add the original black and white video link to each I have uploaded. Most you will find on UA-cam as some people just upload the originals without any enhancements. I'm glad you enjoyed it though, thank you for watching :)
Great film, and Renee Godfrey looked lovely, especially in what she was wearing on the train 😍
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Thanks again for another Sherlock Holmes in colour, i have added a link to you in my UA-cam and Facebook channels
Thank you so much, I'll be your next subscriber, just give me 5 mins :)
Not bad movie kept interest the hole film … I like him as Sherlock Holmes & Watson ..
Thank you for watching it right through, greatly appreciated :)
I love mysteries set on trains - so this was a huge treat. Thank you so much for all the hard work and care to detail that went into this enhanced production, especially as you made it available at such high resolutions. What a joy it was to watch.
Thank you for watching. I have another queued up ready but have to wait for a copyright claim from a heavy metal band that used a sentence from the movie at the beginning of their song that was produced 80 years later. I have to deal with some obscene copyright claims and they can take up to 30 days to release them. Thank you for watching what I have done so far, greatly appreciated. :)
In 10 days 30,808 views. Wow. Thank you! The color and clarity is amazing. Looking at the plaids and tweedy coat textures. Very cool. This looks like a brand new movie.
Some of the movies I enhance get a lot of views in a short time and others just sit there on a couple of views, it's very strange but I think this one is just a very popular movie. Thank you for a lovely comment and kind words, greatly appreciated and thank you for watching :)
@@SimonWard1 Wonderful film. I'm in awe of the recolorized thing, tho sometimes confused. Because there's a recolorized clip of Marilyn Monroe entertaining the troops on YT : & I've seen a red dress, blue dress & burgundy dress version , all on different Marilyn channels ! I assume its guess work re the colours people use.
It all depends on the software and equipment and also how generous the AI enhancing is feeling at the time. Trust me, it's so random at times, actors with blue eye shadow, blonde hair turned into red etc, it takes time to get things right, trashcan is always full @@sarahholland2600 😆
Brilliant
Very nicely done!

Renee Godfrey......WOW!!
I think this film looks GREAT with the color added. Very artsy and moody. Like a period Holmes film should look. Bravo!
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it, also thank you for a positive comment, greatly appreciated :)
@@SimonWard1..For what it's worth, the only video I gave a "thumbs down' in the last few days was because it was uploaded in 240p just days ago. You easily get a thumbs-up from me...👍🏾👍🏾
I just don't like them putting Sherlock Holmes in the forties. It takes away from the original stories. Part of the mystery and fun was it being in Victorian times, and foggy London, dashing into Hansom Cabs. Nope, don't like these. I do love the ones with Jeremy Brett. Now that is my Sherlock Holmes. And Nigel Bruce, always annoys me no end, lol. Sherlock Holmes would not have hung out with some dithering twit, lol. Dr. Watson was an educated man. The Doctor Watson in the ones with Jeremy Brett is more like it to me.
An African finds the diamond, yet the Europeans take ownership of it, and the West attacks Mugabe for taking back his people's land. By the way, this is a brilliant film.
Brilliant, thank you Mr Ward, a good film is a good film, however old it may be!
This is one of the more popular movies I've uploaded. Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching :)
Always thought Basil Rathbone looked like a sensibly coiffured Brian May

The Toy train shots are priceless
In 4k! Oh my gran would’ve loved this!
I upscale all videos to 4k which helps a little bit with the quality but although 4k resolution, they never come out like you would expect a new 4k movie to look. I'll be honest, upscaling to HD would probably be the same quality as 4k in most cases, maybe only a slight difference, hardly noticeable though. Thank you for watching :)
I love how the railway carriage sits alongside side the platform with no gap whatsoever. What a terrible studio mock -up😂 And the passengers thronging to the train, which has the locomotive facing what would be the buffers, ready for the off 😂😂😂
Awesome job!!!
Thank you :)

doOldify does work wonders, but you really don't eat up much energy running your gpu colorizing these videos. Do the math on your wattage used.
I use AVCLabs and an RTX 4090 with a Ryzen 9 AM5 12 core CPU with mostly Ultra settings and OC. Easily hits 400 watts during intensive scenes. Fluctuates.
Well done Sir😊. Very nice to see this movie in such nice condition.

Stunning restoration work. Well done.
Thank you so much, greatly appreciated! Thank you for watching :)
How did you colorize and up-rez this film.? The process sounds very interesting .
I use an RTX4090 GPU, Ryzen 9 AM5 CPU, 96GB DDR5 RAM and AVCLabs software. It's an expensive setup for me, but hoping to have the bank loan paid back soon. I am looking for better software, this current software isn't geared up for the high end hardware, each movie takes a long time and the results are not as good as I want them to be. Also, this project uses a lot of electricity, not good in the UK when we are paying such a high price for energy. I would use a solar generator, but the sun never seems to shine here lol.
@@SimonWard1 - Great system. I wonder if a render-farm would be any help.
I did look into renting servers but I wanted to do everything from home. I can maintain it all myself, use it for other projects, makes a good gaming system for the kids too when they want to play a high end game. The next project is time-lapse videos, I am able to connect the camera direct to the computer, download what's on it instantly, wifi up to the cameras to check if they are still running etc. The only real problem is the electricity it burns, I hope my landlord installs solar panels eventually, that should knock the costs down a bit.
The color is so innocent, great movie 🎥
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching :)

Be gender aware.
Black & White is so much better. Color keeps changing and doesn’t add anything.
The majority would disagree, however, just for the few negative comments, I am burning through my electricity to redo all the movies in their original black and white form at 4K 60fps. Terror by Night will be done next and ready hopefully in the next 14 hours.

They RUINED it! Colorizing a B&W Classic Film...SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!
No I haven't, the original is still there in it's glorious black and white, it's not like I have taken the original and painted it in permanent colour. Seems you have so much time on your hands to leave negative comments on the work I do, maybe you should use some of that time to find the black and white original version on UA-cam or elsewhere, it's not hard to find, I found it and I'm spending hundreds of hours colourising classic movies.
If you don't like it, don't watch it. Doesn't actually affect you or anyone else, just go watch the black and white version and carry on with your life the same way you did before knowing colourization of this film ever existed. Zero harm done. There's no reason to bring down someone else's hardwork because YOU don't like it. It's not harming you. Sometimes people need to learn when to speak or just shut up and move on.
Great job Mr. Ward, I enjoyed the film! (I enjoy both B&W and the colourized version. Brilliant!
