- From Cristiano Ronaldo at Euro 2016 in France to Didier Deschamps at Euro 2000 in the Netherlands, HITC Sevens attempts to rank every captain to have won the European Championships from least to most brilliant in the build-up to Euro 2020.

What a weird year 2004 was, Porto winning the Champions League, the last team from outside the big 5 leagues to win it to date, then rank outsiders GREECE winning the Euros against Portugal in Lisbon
And Portugal had many of the same players who had just won the UCL with Porto.
P.S. Once Caldas, a small team from Colombia, defeated Boca in the Libertadores Final that same year.

Fun fact - Fabio Cannavaro had an interview before Euro 2004 started, he was asked which team didn't have a chance of lifting the trophy, he said GREECE.
So Fabio was made to look like a mug. He should have said Latvia.

Gullit probably did the best job of captaining his team at the euro 88. He was the captain that made all the players feel more confident walking out on the pitch anyway, but he was also the one that made the players and the manager Michels gel. The season up to the euro's had been too long for him and he wasn't in great shape. He admitted that, just worked his ass off while reading the game well, let others star and scored a crucial goal in the final when the going got tough.

I'm still of the opinion that if Ronaldo has stayed on the pitch at the Euro 2016 Final that Portugal would not have gone on to win it. Ronaldo's substitution forced Portugal to play more as an actual team rather than a "get it up to Ronaldo and hope for the best" sort of team. Portugal were just stumbling through and their only win in 90 minutes was against Wales in the semi's

I’d put Gullit at the third place. He was an absolute machine. Very underrated ONLY because he had to share pitch with a GOAT that was Marco Van Basten but arguably as important for both the Dutch national team as well as Milan during their dominance in Europe.

Ranking captains based on how good they are as individual players doesn't really make much sense. It should be based on their leadership and how influential were they as leaders in the final outcome of the tournament.
