I had always alternated between Switch axe/Great Sword/ and the LBG. Oh how blind I was. Then about two months ago while I was preparing for my future Sunbreak adventures by creating the various meta sets for each weapon class...I came across the Insect Glaive....My brothers in Christ how my senses were overwhelmed by the freedom of flight! I lifted off from the accursed dirt and felt the wind whip over my body. Oh my brothers I was in the heavens. I aimed my trusty insect ally and fired! He soon returned with the invigorating essence that sharpened my senses, invigorated my muscles, and dulled out the hateful roars of my prey. Higher and higher I soared, my vorpal blade a blur of spinning death. My form a parade of cascading after-images. Blink and you'll be left wondering if I was ever there. The skies are my home now. The clouds my family. The grit and grime of the dusty mundane ground no longer hold sway over me. I am reborn and the grass will only ever get to touch my brilliance when I'm feeling merciful.

I have only ever used insect glave for its aerial gameplay. That is what makes insect glave fun and different. Anyone who disagrees is allowed to have their opinion. But they are 1000% wrong.

I'm a GS main, glad you got over your weab phase, my friend started out Longsword but realized how busted it was and transitioned away from it to IG too, so I'll link this to him. I love your content, I love MonHun and I love Soulsborne so I'm here just for support.
If there's any kind of weapon main worse than a modern LS main it's a GS main.
If u think that LS is busted try any of the ranged weapons especially the 2 bow guns and u will realize how absurd they r. If u want to remain melee weapon user, do not try bowguns because ones u get to know how good they r, it’s very difficult to go back.

Great guide, I especially liked your detailed explanation on the dual colour (defense) kinsect. I really enjoy using the insect glaive with jumping advance slash, but I need to try out kinsect slash now (especially now that I know I need to change the gunner reticle speed lol)
Update: I've been convinced, kinsect slash is great and it feels so smooth to play
Bro even in world I always hated the fact that ground glaive is considered "optimal", when I could always more consistently hit the monsters without taking damage, and more consistently finish my combos in the air therefore doing more overall damage (especially with the 20 percent aerial damage boost decoration)

Whereas I miss 4u and g/gu style glaiving, ground glaive always felt more satisfying. Though, nothing beats how broken Anubis IG was in 4u.

No, even better, 1 big-boom IG w/ Ladytower (heal/para dust w/Powder Vortex) , 3 other dust based IG, at least 1 of which uses Fiddlebrix (pure blast dust Idle Stamina Recovery Up), and any combo of Cancadaman (poison/para dust Auto-attack Freq. Up), Fiddlebrix, or Ladytarge (pure poison dust Stamina Use Slowed). The blast dust brings the bulk of the damage for big boom, poison and para can cause DoT or openings and the Ladytower's heal dust can keep everyone alive.

World was my first MH game. and I choose the IG first because of the ariel moves. I never gave into the meta to begin with, it was just too much fun to avoid the ariel play style. With that said, I am happy with the current state of this weapon. I'm having fun, while at the same time doing good enough damage that I'm not handicapping myself by playing the way I want.

I got me MHRise for the switch about a year ago (first MH ever for me, mind you) and at first, I tought it may not be my cup of tea.
Well, slowly but surely I got the hang of it, started maining the hammer, but never came to love it, than I watched some guy online going all out with the insect glaive.
I was stunned, the guy would rack hit after hit, move in and out of the fight quickly, going all gracefully dancing in the air. I knew it then and there I had to master the insect glaive.
Now, about 180 hours later I ONLY play insect glaive, I find it impossible to use other weapons (like for arena challenges).
Now with the new expansion, the insect glaive just became more viable, I swear I'm tearing through monsters now.
I like what they did with the expansion, and I like what the weapon was before, just because it forced you to become proficient in avoiding damage.
I don’t main Insect Glaive for optimal damage, I main Insect Glaive because I want to play Spider-Man for PS5 while I play Monster Hunter on Nintendo Switch.
Thanks for helping me stay away from that icky nasty ground even better than before!
(jokes aside, it’s nice to know aerial IG isn’t as bad as I thought. I was still gonna play aerial, but at least now I know I’m actually contributing to hunts and not just looking cool)

after playing aerial Insect Glaive in Rise I CANNOT go back to playing this weapon in any other Monster Hunter, it's just SOOOO GOOOD

There are two kinds of Hunters: Insect Glaive Mains and Future Insect Glaive Mains
How about the best thing about this is that you can finally play the insect glaive without having to spend time gathering essence, you just go straight into combat. This was my initial issue with Insect Glaive. Nothing sucks the fun out of the weapon like stopping your attacks because you need to buff some arbitrary buff.
I pray that this becomes a mainstay after this monster hunter, or another nice thing would be if assist kinsects got essences while you attacked, that would also be useful.
I might actually play Insect Glaive again, I haven't since MH4.
yes it is a pretty strong twist, they made gathering kinsects instantaneous and they balanced it in a way that reward if you get them in the right order, pretty great.
I don't know, I kinda miss leveling up the kinsect and feeling like it was growing along with me like a pet.
After playing Glaive hundreds of hours in MH world and Rise, I was reluctant to try kinsect slash, and at first it did feel very awkward. After a day practicing with it, I think this it is _probably_ superior to jumping slash. First off, it seems I'm knocked out of the air way less often, which makes sense given it's animation. It's also much faster than jumping slash, so you don't miss the monster as much, it really allows you to stay on top of it. I was already using the 'blunt dual color defense kinsect because I just think it's the best overall, but he's right, it pairs nicely.
Apologies for the late reply but in the same way as the advancing roundslash, a small portion of the hit and jump from kinsect slash is I-frames to easily dodge attacks and just keep flying around, beating the shit out of the monster; allows you to be waaaay more aggressive in the air than the regular aerial roundslash could ever be... and if you already knew this, perhaps someone else may see it and get some info out of it :P

The intro to this video explains the mindset of all IG mains perfectly, and I'll be talking like that on voice forever from now on.
I'm practicing this and so far, once I got a handle on it, it's been incredibly fun and effective too. I always loved to just hop around above monsters and dodging their ground sweep attacks while breaking wings and this will just enhance my favourite playstyle a lot. Thanks for posting this. :D

Can't wait for mods to update so I can check my DPS on this - I've been a puny ground glaive plebian all my life and I think this doubles my DPS. It certainly FEELS cooler, and that's reason enough to join our airborne alliance.

I've been experimenting with the new kinsects, especially the one that charges (that does a surprising amount of damage and it KOs monsters quite easily) but this playstyle also seems quite fun. Gotta be honest I thought the new moves were pretty mediocre and got disappointed, but looks like I was wrong. Definitely gonna try this out. Thanks for the video!
As many others in this comment section, I once mained some other mundane weapon when I decided to give the insect glaive a shot and it changed my life forever, I honestly cannot ever go back to anything with less mobility, such a fun weapon

Thanks for showing me alternative way to play IG, ground IG is still very fun and at some point I will probably settle for mixed playstyle, but at this moment I am having a blast with aerial IG, aiming felt a bit awkward but after listening to your advice about settings and a couple hunts I mostly gotten used to it. Not an IG main, but I played a bit of IG in Rise and world before, just hated coptering in world, felt very unresponsive and wonky (the fact that it didn't deal that much damage in base world didn't even matter, it was just not fun), Rise made aerial IG a lot more fun, especially SB.

I started watching your channel when I found your Dark Souls 3 videos. I have never played a second of Monster Hunter but I still enjoy watching these videos hahaha
Decided to pick IG back up for Sunbreak and its been a humbling experience feeling like a scrub again. I only used it a bit in 4U and base World so I never truly mastered it. In Sunbreak its honesty like a dream to use. Still a bit clumsy but slowly getting more confident with the flow and moveset.
This guide was absolutely amazing ! You did a great job at explaining everythig in a way everyone would understand. I just wish you'd show preffered skills, weapons and armor.
+1 for this, I feel like it's some balance between the obvious skill buffs (Weakness Exploit, Attack Boost, Critical Boost/Eye) and stamina buffs (Constitution, Stamina Surge, Latent Power? Furious?).
Depends on how much you go for permabuffers IMO

There is an extract priority with the assist kinsects that is hard to put in simple words but white, red, then orange. Example if you hit a part that matches what your kinsects forced extract, the second color will always be white, except when using the white extract kinsect, then you will get red.
I had no idea that how the defensive vs attack kinsect type changed what extract you pulled, or that the kinsect slash pulled extract at all!. So much great info in this Video! Thank you for making it,
Been maining glaive for 50h since it just clicked for me unlike the other weapons but never really stayed from the switch skills from base rise but this has made me consider using the others skills after i unlock more switch skills in sunbreak

as main insect glaive since MH4U, I felt really sad for the way that this weapon was so... despised at the beginning of Rise, because all the weapons then had the power of flying around and doing "aerial combos", while the move set of the glaive was so lame, specially in the air. The rest of weapons were flying and laughing at us... IN OUR TERRITORY.
But now with the new combos (speciffically the shown by you) the glorious sky will be taken back to its true master!

Loving Charge Blade.
I can stun, trip and stagger a monster so often that they can't even run away.
All while barely having to move, like some kind of murder turtle.
Murder turtle is an awesome nickname for the charge blade playstyle :D like snapping turtle that has explosive teeth :D
There's certain rivalry between some of the weapons like the Hammer VS Longsword. Or Hammer VS Sticky ammo bowguns. But Insect Glaive and CB debuted together very late and usually 4U hunters are CB, IG mains and are very nice. Iam a Chargeblade main and my brother is Insect Glaive main. We switched to them in MH4 and never looked back. Occasionally i meet up with him in the air during the hunts when iam doing the Axehopper with my CB. Usually he follows it up with wyvern dive whenever i do Axehopper, we both yell "it's fukin over". Lol it's just so much fun, iam glad both weapons got some buffs that they needed from long now.
@@stephenjohn2131 I've never had an issue with IG players. They're mostly doing their own thing and they're typically not anywhere near where I want to be.
But then you get those chucklefuk dual blade dudes who roll up on the head and demon and interrupt the hell out of everybody there while not doing any ko damage and ignoring the tail. Malfunctioning AI brained payers seem to flock to that weapon.
I'll never forgive the devs for taking away out spatula flip.

i'm so fucking happy that Switch Skills is a thing now so that I can go in with a ground and an aerial loadout and switch it up as the situation calls. I'm absolutely loving sunbreak. The thing I like about games like this is experimenting with builds, and they cranked that up to 11

But i do this with Switch axe Continously Discharging like Sword Gun every 20 seconds Monster can't get a break in Switch axe Shift ( Enjoying this and insect glave more than anything ever ) ~ In sunbreak Swax ; Insect glave ; Dual swords ; Bow are epic ~
Having they blunt kinsect with (charged chain attack) and doing kinsect slash feels soooo OP, you should try it.

I've been using IG since 4U and have never had nearly this much fun with it. This weapon has so much versatility.
Floor is lava!! We IG users rule the skies!! Consider turning on gyroscope for aiming. It can help on aiming and keeping track of the monster with kinsect slash. Might be time to bring out your controllers with paddles or dust off those claw grip skills. Being able to keep your thumb on R stick for camera movement to keep track of the monster wherever they go is is a godsend when using kinsect slash!!!
IG was so much fun. Played aerial almost exclusive with the exception of few monsters. IG let’s you leave your corporeal form

Personally I like using the blunt fast charge kinsect more since it increases the blunt damage it does, and since I usually have Evasion+5, Evasion Distance+3 and Bladescale Hone+3 in my Insect Glaive builds it pays off to rely on evading the roars.
Probably played IG the most in base rise, but haven’t touched it yet in sunbreak. (Been running through the story solo on lance and having a blast.) But its good to know that the new switch skills can really change things up. Ill be sure to try this out when I get back to running IG.
I haven't had the chance to try IG in Sunbreak yet because I'm too in love with GL and learning GS, but in Rise, IG was my main weapon all throughout. The blunt defense kinsect was always my go to and Diving Wyvern was always my goal. I played aerial IG SO much in Rise, because the changes to mounting meant that my aerial combos would take WAY WAY longer before they'd get broken by a forced mount (my biggest pet peeve about IG before Rise). Everything IG got in Sunbreak only supports that playstyle. I think unless the Tornado Slash (IG's bread and butter on the ground) got significantly buffed, this aerial style may well be meta or close to it. At least I hope so. Spamming Tornado Slash is really quick.
By the way. I personally REALLY like using gyro aiming with IG. It frees up my right thumb and makes this way more comfortable. Gyro camera might help too, but this may or may not be too disorienting. I tend to turn on gyro aim and turn off gyro camera, because that way, the gyro resets just by releasing the reticle. It takes a bit of getting used to, but if you ever feel playing like this is too straining on your fingers, try it. You can aim the camera with the stick and fine tune with the gyro as well, as a sort of combo.
And if you haven't heard yet, you can even go to Options and make it so you only mount with weapon sheathed +Action instead of any weapon hit!
I’ve been preaching about the use of gyro when aiming. It helps aiming kinsect slash so much manageable specially during hectic hunts. (I also hold my controller claw style 😅)
Haven’t felt the need to play rise to be honest. Was tired of my glaive being laughed at during multiplier of I wanted to be flashy like a long sword or a charge blade. Now the time of reckoning has come. Can’t wait to get back to flying

Every single game since and during 4U I have dedicated a portion of each playthrough for aerial glaive. 4U it was practically god mode, Gen U it was fun as hell but very underperforming, World was meh, but Rise... Rise seems to have the glaives *back on the rise*?

What I do is use awakened kinsect attack with my powder kinsect then kinsect slash/ glide to get the buffs back then I either do the spiker or land normally to do a huge powder vortex. This is my blue scroll setup my red scroll has the regular stuff diving wyvern, vault etc.
Powder vortex was not nerfed in solo at least. I’ve done over 1000 damage with one vortex. In my opinion the best part of IG isn’t the aerial moves cuz other weapons now have air stuff (tho IG is by far the best) the fun for me came from using the kinsect which is why I didn’t really like assist types it was boring

One thing I wish about Insect Glaive is that the other Kinsects were more useful, like most don't feel as useful as the dual extract ones (and even then it's just the dual color defence one)
