With not a lot going on in lockdown, progress on fixing our broken down van is slow, it seems buying a second hand engine is not as easy as you'd think, however we have had some contact from citreon so there's some progress.
Trying to keep light hearted as our vanlife nightmare continues, we take it upon ourselves to settle the team Em vs team Lou debate with some much needed silliness and 2 person challenges.
Follow us on our journey as we attempt to fix up our self converted campervan and get her back on the road so we can carry on trying to create a proper youtube travel series as we travel across Europe!

Hi Emily I had similar issues when the first lockdown started working from home alone after being in an office with 600 people, and losing my best friend that first week (not covid related) and not able to travel to her funeral. so yes setting my a designated area helps, although I was in a tiny one bed flat, it was hard as working, eating and trying to relax in the lounge when you can see your computer for 17 or 18 hours a day, meant I felt either like work was encroaching my private space or always at work. Well 2 1/2 years later still working from home 5 days a week, so I'd say I survived it just, not having a pet to motivate me to go out everyday. its one of the reasons I love your videos as I get to see the outside world and have a laugh along the way. take care Camper Vibe family, looking forward to watching more travels when I've caught up.

I have done the donut challenge where you don't lick your lips, but never done it hands-free. That's really taking it to the next level! Great job Em, you smashed it! There's the fluffy bunny marshmallow challenge - you have to see how many marshmallows you can put in your mouth and still say "fluffy bunnies", and without laughing (so you say it everytime you put another marshmallow in your mouth). It comes with a safety warning though in case you choke as they go soft in your mouth, (and you still have to spit out or swallow after) so don't go too crazy if you try it! 🤣 No rude comments! 😉

Exactly the reason I would not buy a second engine unless I was going to strip it down and do a full rebuild, you mise as well and keep what you got and get it rebuilt properly.
Yeh it seems such a bad industry, which is a shame. A rebuild or recon will be the way in the end I reckon. Thanks for watching 😁👍

HMRC decided to change all the VAT and import rules on the Brexit date, so getting spares from Europe is very tricky now. Our government had one job, instead it invents a fake pandemic, spends all day pushing a lethal jab that will wipe out much of the UK population, and collectively punishes us all for the vote to leave. I'd want to emigrate if a) we were allowed to leave and b) anywhere else was better.
But, you have the option of rebuilding the old one still? Maybe easier. If you can get the Haynes manual for the engine, it's a step by step process: and you can get advice here if you get stuck.
Also you can hire mobile mechanics, get one to look and quote. Little to lose, much to gain!!
Working from home.
Using a separate keyboard really helped me. I use an old cheapo one from an old PC, but they start at around a tenner on Amazon. This also means you can use a laptop riser so the two screens are around the same height. Could just be a pile of books if you don't want to buy one.

Just loved this! Loved the kitchen scene with ‘Em, AJ and Summer. Just brilliant! Lou, you tried your best at the challenge but let’s face it you were never going to get the better of the snack bandit. Top try though! 😂 👌
That was really good and something a bit different.
The filming was excellent with all those different angles while Em was in the kitchen. Very artistic, but then we should be used to your filming and editing skills , which are by far the best I've seen on UA-cam.
Was anybody in the slightest bit shocked that "The Snack Bandit" smashed that challenge?
Finally, if you were smart Em, you could have a competition to see who can put the missing door handles on the quickest. 😉

Don’t touch a second hand engine it’s not worth all the hassle you will get go for a service exchange engine cheaper in the long run stay safe ladies 🍷👍
A reman engine is not worth touching as they are NOT remanned by say Citroen They are farmed out to the lowest bidder to rebuild so most the time they don't even use genuine parts !! The only way you know is its been done properly is do it yourself if your from engineering back ground or get a quote from a reputable auto engineering workshop not easy but there are still some good ones left
Cheers guys, lou is trying to do as much research as possible and speaking to garages, mechanics and people that have been recommended on here, I know we will get there just taking a bit of time and want to give Citroen a chance this week, so see what they say as well 👍🙂

We are trying to find a new engine, not currently that easy, we will keep trying though 👍
@@campervibe as far as I know dealers can order one for you and fitted afterward. Perhaps little more expensive but you would get 5 years or 200k warranty with that.
As I’ve said before don’t rate dealers but if you could get a engine from them and get them to fit it for free with a warranty it could be the best way out of this situation 🏴👍 come on team Emily

Also more Citroen/Peugeot engines are the same (French Groupe PSA).
In general they are tough, straightforward engines to repair.
What type of engine is it?
Possibly many parts will be shared across many models of car and van.
@@G-ra-ha-m ..... possibly a ‘transit’ engine as in the Puegeot variant of the van?.... my Elddis motorhome on a Peugeot boxer chassis was a Ford engine..
@@petersmitham8273 Yes, they did use a ford engine for a while, wlthough I've also seen them with the old 1.9TDI PSA engine.
Either way, any competent mobile mechanic could stick it back together, its not rocket science.
Used engines are always a lottery, that's why buying them is such a lottery. By the time it's all bolted in and discovered dud, they would have spent the time and money of getting the old one fixed properly.
@@G-ra-ha-m hi both, we have the 2.2l Ford engine, found in the citreon (this is how auto correct spells it on my computer) the Peugeot, transit and even the puma I believe.
Hi Emily & Louise. Really glad you have had a positive response from Citroen (UK). They should pull out all the stops to help you especially when they see how their counterparts in Spain returned the engine in such a poor condition. I am sure they can access a good rebuild engine to fit at (hopefully) a reasonable price. Will follow your story and wishing you both all the best. (AJ looked very bemused when you were eating the donuts!!!)

Regarding a workspace when working from home - my perfect workspace is the van. When I'm in it, there are no distractions, no other little jobs to do - I just concentrate on getting work done on my laptop. If the van is drivable and you can park next to a forest or a lake - that's even better. But even on the driveway it is a separate space from the regular relaxing space in the house. For me it works a treat - specially if I have to do some work on my laptop which is a bit tedious and I don't feel like getting it done. I just put the heater on, sit down at the little table, get in the zone and get on with it :-)
Hi seb, if the van wasn't full of boxes of engine parts then that would definitely be an option. As it is right now tho it's quite depressing sitting in there and stinks of oil lol! Thanks for watching 😁👍

Hi I'm following your build I bought a boxer 2014 xlwb, I found after I bought mine that it had a reconditioned engine in 2018, iv dug the receipt out and it's C & F Eng, unit 7 henlow ind est. 01462 850100.. mine was £1800 inc vat for a exchange. I think the oil cooler went and the engine cooked at 98k.
Good luck even if you have to cover the van over and leave it for the year you've put so much hard work in to cut a loss. Good luck

Hi, if yours is a euro 5 lump the same as mine it'll more than likely be the oil cooler on the front lower part of the engine where the oil filter screws too, these are water cooled, I know there was a recall on them from main dealer. That would explain why yours overheated and cooked the block. I know mine has a new oil cooler on I checked when buying. Hopefully you get some compensation from main dealer. Hope this helps.

One of the biggest tips i got from my business coach was to go through the motion of leaving the house as if you where going somewhere else take a 5 to 10 minute walk and come straight back to you office area and do not speak to anyone for your family until your lunch break and then again until the end of your work day.

Hi girls , glad your managing to smile 😊👍 . Those engines are either good and last for ages or they pack in premature. Oil pumps are a big problem on them. If you cant find a good engine your only option might be to take your engine block out and take it to a GOOD engine rebuilder . Get them to put new oil pump in along with new piston rings and re grind the crankshaft and rebuild with oversize bearings. Get the cylinder head tested for cracks or leaks and repaired if necessary. Also get cylinder head skimmed and if they need to take a good bit of it you will need an oversized head gasket to make up for the amount skimmed off. A good rebuilder would keep you right on all this. I would also get the injectors cleaned. At least you know you have a good engine after that !! Worth pricing up 😊👍 Take care 🤘🤙
Thanks Steven, yeh we are working on it, most seem to want to supply a rebuild and then take mine away in exchange, rather than rebuilding mine. That's cos I'm going to fit it myself, as that's half the price of of having someone rebuild and fit. It's all still a bit up in the air but I'm sure we will figure it out in the end lol! Well done you ... 😊👍 If you are doing it yourself when you take the gearbox bell housing out to separate it from engine block you are as well putting a clutch kit in while you are that deep in. Get a lone of a clutch alignment tool of a mechanic you know as having clutch dead centre is very important. I'm sure you know people who will help you. All the best ......🤘💪
The working from home scenario I am all too familiar with. The key thing for me is to have a routine to separate work from home life. For me that’s wearing work clothes during office hours and then changing later. Regular breaks is a must and giving your eyes a rest from the monitors. Enjoy the views and get fresh air as much as possible. Finally, do not be too hard on yourself. Your doing the best you can in the circumstances and that’s all anyone can ask of you! These are strange and difficult times and you have to remember you’re not the only one going through it and feeling this way. If you can have regular catch ups with work colleagues then I found that helps too 👍🏻

I think its best to look for another van altogether but research very well I will go for an older van one with not electronic injection one with the old diesel pump I think that will be a better option then just re-design the back of your campervan
Hi Richard, decent second hand vans are hard to come by here at the minute. I hear what your saying about avoiding the newer electrical problems tho. We will get a new engine and then in several years we will look to change to something different, just not financially viable yet. Thanks so much for watching 😁👍
Well done 'The Snack Bandit' was a good clean fight with a clear winner. You have to play egg roulette. Sue and I did it in the first lockdown. We live video WA it to our friends, it was hilarious. You need 12 eggs 8 hard boiled and 4 raw. Get a neighbour to mix the eggs up once they are prepped so there is no advantage to either of you. Sue won the challenge 3-1. Shower required on completion of the challenge. Gonna do it with 8 of us over a Zoom chat 😁...🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚
😂🤣 We have looked at this one, it's on the maybe list. Emily's not sure if her clean freak ocd can handle it, personally I think that will be more fun 🤣😂👍
From my experience of changing engines my view is as much as you can dont compromise on a secondhand from a scrappy or even a recon go for new if you can expensive outlay as it may be it definitely pays in the longer run. Get the dealer to fit it you then get warranty and follow on service.
Cheers Andrew, I know lou has been looking at all options, I think its more to do with availability at the mo, we definitely won't compromise, it was crap on the first breakdown so don't want to go through that again

Hi ladies. I understand you are in Kent. Theres a engine reconditioners in Dartford called Dartford rebore. I have used them in the past for engine work. They have been there many years and have a good reputation locally. They may not be able to help with your engine, it is your engine they will do what's necessary to, you may have already tried them. Just a suggestion. Hope you get back on the road soon.

Bought an engine from a breakers. Had my broken one removed. The engine i bought turned up and was knackered. Massive crack across the block!
Got my money back and scrapped the truck.
Go to a citroen specialist. Get then to source the engine and fit it.
Oh what a crap experience you had. Yeah lou has got a couple fo other things to try 👍

Guys, if it comes to push or shove, do not go anywhere near a breaker engine. Recon every time. Will save you much money in the long run. Hope Citroen come up with a deal.

I know it sounds nerdy but if you’re sat in the new office space for long hours, you should really check out appropriate chairs and desk space size where your I.T equipment is from you’re seating /standing position and have regular breaks.

Lou I feel for you both! However there are other alternatives. Converting Fanny to pure electric drives is both possible and cost effective. It will be less than a fitted recon engine. I live in a campervan and I am now researching converting it to electric drive system! It is very doable!

Good luck getting a home made electric vehicle fixed in Spain should it break down there, would be groundhog day. Can't imagine you would have much luck getting breakdown cover so even more expensive paying it all yourself.
As for repairs an electric motor is far easier to repair than a a mechanical rotating machine. Google van electric conversions! Tesla is not the only way to go! I am looking to convert my van because of the restrictions on diesel engine is rapidly approaching. But then again I have some considerable experience in electric and hybrid electric drives! I design and install electric drive systems for marine applications!

Hi Kevin, you're not the first to suggest them, we've been in touch based on the reccomend actions but unfortunately they can't really offer any advice or reccomend actions. Unfortunate as they are local so would have been good if the knew someone. 😁👍
it sounds like there is just one rear end smash van which all the breakers know about - first one to sell the engine buys the whole van from whoever has it now and then breaks it. Fingers crossed the AA and Citroen step forwards and help

Interesting that Citroen are talking to you. Could be a great chance for publicity on how they deal with the situation. I would maybe still investigate re con engines but press Citroen for help using your UA-cam channel as an influencers tool.

Hi just watched some of the video's if it's s cylinder head issue try company that specializes in cylinder head refurbishment.They should be able to crack test it advise if warped? Then most probably they could skim the head so maybe just that new head gasket and bolts,hope you get it sorted all the best Chris

1st choice spares is another good one for searching. I used to source parts & had to find a engine I brought the garage a recon engine but got money off for giving them the old one. We got a 2 year guarantee. I will stop writing now & carry on watching 🤗 loved the clean up of the kitchen and your fur babies being included. As for the doughnut eating challenge I couldn't stop smiling at you both. How about ping pong balls bouncing into cups or tea bombs 😁
