The Non-Canon Expert looks at Darth Vader's reaction to Grand Moff Tarkin's decision to use the Death Star to destroy Alderaan, examining two versions of the scene that follows that appearing in A New Hope as found within Legends novels.
This is a Legends story for Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin, with information being found in the Legends novels "Death Star" by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry and "The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader" by Ryder Windham. I hope that you enjoy it!

Some people mistake Vader for destroying Alderaan...no, it is Tarkin's doing, Vader merely allowed it.
I would not even used the word "allowed", as its quite obvious who was in charge. Tarkin. He knew it and he didn't give a toss what Vader said or did.
There is really no way Vader could have stopped him, short of running him through with his lightsaber, which would have resulted in him being killed by the Emperor for treason in short order.
@@englishlady9797 I doubt the emperor would have replaced vader. At this point raising and finding another force sensitive being is difficult. In one of the comics Vader was sent to the jedi temple to retrieve a list of children who were eligible younglings. He had purposely destroyed the list so he could not be replaced. Vader would've likely suffered a lightning wrath from sidious if he didn't fully approve. I think the other issue here is palpatine approved blowing up a planet but he himself was not expecting alderaan. It's sort of a if he had known which planet he probably would've said maybe not kind of situation. It's not like the imperials would've arrested vader for treason either. He could've easily wiped out anyone in the room. Seeing that vader kills captains and admirals left and right, vader would likely just need proper justification and palpatine would've went along with it. Tarkin was important before the death star was fully operational. After seeing it's completion he might not be as important.
allowed it? he was just around kinda.
At that point tarkin outranked Darth vader so he couldn't do anything. That's why when he told vader that's enough in 4, he stopped
There wasn't much he could really do about it as this was Tarkin's and ultimately Palpatine's decisions and at the time Vader answered to only to Tarkin and Palpatine. If he tried disagreeing much less do anything to stop it, Vader would have faced extremely dire consequences up to and including his own death. He can't overthrow Palpatine if he's dead.
One version we have Vader basically going like "Alright whatever." Another we have Vader "Wow I thought my boss was pure evil but you are something else, speaking of which do you even have his permission to blow this planet up?"
Right??? Even Palpatine mightve face palmed muttering somethin along the lines of "he did what..."
Robert Agu hell wouldn’t have it been better to blow up some random planet. That had no population and also unimportant.
Emperor : He did what ! Did that Fool know how much tax money that world brought into the empire ?
@@krispalermo8133
Well yes, but actualy no. It was asserting dominance : "We are willing to destroy even a highly populated planet, if it means defeating the rebelion".
Imagine the terror : People would fight the rebelion on their own planets, so that they don't risk their destruction. If the rebels would had not destroyed the Death Star, it would soon mean the end of the rebelion, even if some of them would have ran away from the rebel base.
It's really stupid to destroy the entire planet. Losing all the resources including the people. It would also be a painless instant death.
Vader before finding out: Meh, whatever. Let Tarkin have his fun
Vader after finding out: Oh crap. Child services are gonna be all over my ass for this, both my son and daughter. If there’s a chance I’m fatally wounded with no chance of recovery, I’m taking it
That is the reason why Vader died at the end of RotJ.
GL did not even guest who the Skywalker twins' mother was.
And you know Leia will have chewed Vader's burnt scared ass over what he has done for the past 23 years.
Is that because the Son that fucking demon show you a vision when you were Mortis
The great irony is that Tarkin was very wrong even by Machiavellian logic. Machiavelli stated that cruelty should be used rarely, only in dire need and in such a calculated manner that everything is finished in one swift motion, so the population can quickly forget and go on with their lives. Tarkin ended up destroying a valuable planet for no immediate gain, to apply the constant cruelty of fear and leaving the loose end that was the Rebellion still standing. As such, much like a cornered animal, certain doom prompted violent reaction from the population against the regime. Tarkin's Doctrine was therefore wasteful and counterproductive.
and Darth Bane slaps Palpatine for allowing a crazy person to screw over the empire at its conception XD
Very well said
Tarkin was undoubtedly a fool
Yeah he also gave a rallying cry for the Rebellion.
And Sidious slaps Tarkin for his Idiocy andy ch
Tarkins final thoughts before the Death Star blew up.
'Should have let Krennic have this achievement.'
Krennic would’ve actually been a better choice, with oversight of course. He actually figured out what Jynn was talking about when she told him his project was sabotaged, and if he survived, he would’ve shut it down and go over every bolt in that damn battle station, and he even figured out the whole exhaust port thing, funny how Tarkin killing Krennic was what ultimately doomed himself as well.
69 likes leave it that way
The last thing to go through Tarkin's mind was his skull being vaporized to plasma.
Tarkin: *uses the Death Star to destroy Alderaan, one of the core worlds and one of the most influential planets in the Galaxy*
Vader: "You're fucking insane... I respect that."
But pastels? Really??
@@MrBiggles53 What?
a new level of insanity achieved when a Dark Lord of the Sith thinks you're nuts.... XD
The new canon makes it seem like Vader was against the Death Star on principle. In the Darth Vader comic when he realized Tarkin was building a planet killer he seemed upset and prophesied that it would be Tarkin's tomb. In Rogue 1 he criticized the destruction of Jedha despite it being ordered by Tarkin and only had disparaging words for the Death Star itself. And there was his famous line in the original movie 'don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed.' After the Death Star was destroyed he told the Emperor that the "arrogance" of the weapon "courted disaster."
Vader: "He's insane. Of that there's no doubt... I respect that."
😆
Is that because you hidden Ezra and Ahsoka After you told him that Tarkin blows up Alderaan.
When Tarkin said he had permission to display the power of the Death Star, I don't think blowing up Alderaan is what Papa Palpy had in mind, especially when he refuses to give the exact details of what they are doing as Vader wanted to do. I think he only got permission to blow up the planet the Rebel base was on, not one of the most well known and culturally important planets in the Core.
Not true. What happened in the movie is what happened. Nothing more nothing less
Honestly, Alderaan had always been a thorn in Palpatine's side
@@BlackAdder1970 Well what happened in the novelization simply expanded upon what we saw, so it's still plausible. Plus, it would explain why Tarkin was being careful with his choice of words.
I can imagine a scene like the one in Robot Chicken where Palpatine learns about the Death Star's destruction, only this time it's about the destruction of Alderaan
Russ Green what in tf are you even talking about.... NO shit it’s what happened. They do not change what happened in the films, they just expand on what took place during those events. What was going through their minds at that point. He’s saying that Palpatine did not intend for Tarkin to blow up Alderaan like he did, he did not expect that would happen. I mean did you even read it...
Blowing up Alderaan was idiotic. Threatening Princess Leia with the act made sense, but they should have investigated Dantoonie first, and THEN returned to Alderaan.
The the dread Leia would feel would be overwhelming on the return, and she might have broken to save her people.
If she didn't, then the destruction of the planet could arguably be put on her, and the guilt would help in bringing the Princess to the Dark Side.
Tarkin just wanted to show off his new toy, like a spoiled child.
Three things I know for sure:
1.) Tarkin was the most evil non-Force sensitive life form in the Star Wars universe.
2.) The Death Star was much more effective than the Eludium Pew Thirty-Six Explosive Space Modulator.
3.) Alderaan was obstructing Tarkin's view of Venus.
Imagine if the Emperor was on Alderaan when it blew up.
“After coming at him with that tone, Vader concluded that Tarkin.... was insane”
xD
He was probably right though.
The only problem is that it had the opposite effect. Many people saw the situation of Imperial rule as entirely untenable.
I want to know Thrawns reaction, we all know that he hated the Death Star.
@@EchthelionII He and Vader agreed that it was wasteful and tactically non-viable. Thrawn was a pragmatist. He likely would've considered the destruction of Alderan to be a waste of a perfectly good biosphere. He dislike needless destruction, cruelty, etc. The only reason he even supported the Empire in the 1st place must because he along with the higher UPS among his people thought it would be the most beneficial alliance at the time.
@@UncleMikeDrop Right, Thrawn is by far the best Star Wars character ever.
@@EchthelionII Yep. In a Galaxy of mustache twirling villains, short tempered warriors, and high minded space wizards, the pragmatist reigns supreme. That's what always annoyed me about the Jedi and the Sith. I've always wondered how people who can see into the future could possibly be so terrible at planning things out in advance.
@@UncleMikeDrop I wonder what would happen if Thrawn was a Jedi, Sith, or just force sensitive, in the main galaxy, the only change is he is now a force user.
When Vader thinks you're insane.....
Could you imagine if there was an agent of the Emperor reporting this back to the Emperor after the destruction of Alderaan. Then calling Tarken back Imperial Center to discipline Tarken for giving the rebellion the rallying cry that they needed to gain more support
Primex007 sounds like Robot chicken material.
"There is just.......no way to spin this." -Auralnauts Vader.
LOLLOLLLOLOLO
Have you considered a Life Day Parade?
I'm glad you put in the second story. I always liked the way Tarkin shut Vader down when Vader questioned destroying Alderaan. "Don't think to question *me* Lord Vader. You're not dealing with Tague or Monty." I thought it may have been lost after the Star Wars Radio Drama. With all the historical and biography re writes over the years
I am glad this part of legends is trash. I always got the vibe that Vader didn't like the Death Star or destroying planets-even if it is subtle. From both Ep 4 and Rogue One. Every step of the way, Vader mocked, or treated the idea of using a death star to blow up planets with hostility and derision. Heck this comic even contradicts Vader's comment towards Tarkin implying he did not agree with blowing up Alderaan. Stating he did not think it would be effective in getting the information out of Leia.
In the radio version of a new hope Vader challenges Tarkins decision.
"It is one of core worlds"...
"Be quiet Vader I have the authority. Your not dealing with Motti now".
If only Vader knew how big of an impact destroying Alderan would have in that moment. So many defected the Empire after this happened. A ton of public trust in the Empire was lost and were now seen as destroyers not protectors. I'm pretty sure I remember even Sidious was not happy about this either.
I don’t think Grand Admiral Thrawn would have made the same decision if he had been in charge of the Death Star. I’m talking about the true version of Thrawn before the mouse took over. He would have realized that such a move would have been unwise and that it would rile up the populace. Thrawn was far more subtle than Tarkin.
Thrawn would have kept it out of the public spotlight until he had need of it.
I doubt it. Thrawn would have used it as a political tool. However, I suspect that he would also have taken precautions against an attack. Occasional jumps to isolated systems, keeping the Death Star out of the public's eye for a while, then jumping back and so on so that only few would know where the Death Star would likely be at a certain time. Also, he would probably have played with the Death Star beam quite a bit to see how to use it effectively. Say, you want to take out a planet. Why blow it up? Why not shoot the ray in such a way that it only scratches the planet's shield? Would this suffice to knock out a planetary shield? And if it does, how would a rebellious planet with a knocked out shield react to the Death Star that is maybe even supported by a bunch of Star Destroyers?
Jamie Brueske I don’t think Disney Thrawn would do it either. Tbh Legends Thrawn thought the Death Star was a waste of resources and not worth the cost.
@@Breeg2011 The Death Star properly escorted by ISDs, VSDs to provide planetary surface-level threats, and maybe even an SSD or two just to prevent anyone from getting ideas, would have been the most terrifying thing the Empire could field. Throw in the Eclipse and it would've been perfect. Like a fleet used by most players in SW RTS games. Looking at you, Empire at War and Rebellion/Supremacy.

Btw, how did Luke react to Palpatine cheating death?
With sheer terror probably lol
@@rfc1526 Fuck, I know I would.

Interesting story arc there. Look up 'Operation Shadow Hand'. It actually justifies that seemingly broken and self-loathing Luke we see in SW:TLJ. That would be when Luke actually fell to the dark side under the reborn Palpatine, and Leia had to snap him out of it. The Battle of Onderon was very costly for the Rebels/New Republic, which also included the destruction of Byss. I had no idea this was a part of Legends until I watched Eckhart's Ladder's lastest work and did the research myself. If Op Shadow Hand is made into Canon, then that 'Luke' we saw in SW:TLJ is actually justified IMO. That much guilt is very hard to dismiss. If that is a spoiler, oops. I am merely guessing...
@@marty7442 I was referring to "Dark Empire", when Luke physically met the reborn Palpatine and fell to the dark side

Alderaan should have been Krennic's achievement.
They stood there amidst Krennic's achievement! I've gone through the scenario of "What If" Krennic survived the Battle of Scarif. I doubt I could do a coherent video on it, but imagining Krennic in Episode 4 is always fun lol. Thank you for watching buddy, hope you enjoyed the video.
What about Poggle the Lesser?
Krennic isn't canon
B. Lloyd Reese Correction, Krennic *IS* canon, like it or not...
Krennic probably would have done a tactical strike and not nuked the Planet.
Palpatine probably used his extensive vocabulary of Nubian cuss words about the aftermath of Alderaan. Vader winced hearing it as he only heard that much Nubian profanity once in his life. Some senator pissed Padme off something firece and he heard the most unladylike, deplorable language in his life. It was so rude even 3PO didn't want to translate it.
He thought his own mother cussing in Huttese when she was angry was bad.

I have a whole new outlook on Grand Moff Tarkin, I mean when Vader thinks you're insane, that's really saying something.

I have a good question. What would Vader have done if it was Naboo that was to be destroyed?
That is a very good question. Since Padme was layed to rest there I would imagine Vader would have gone ballistic on Tarkin.
Just imagine if Tarkin had force capabilities. He would have been worse than Sidious.
It sounds like Vader disagreed with the decision to destroy Alderaan but was not allowed to have any say or opinion of the matter. So the remainder of the time, he kept his opinion to himself after Tarkin's outburst. Imagine Leia's reaction if she ever learns this.
I actually thought Vader was sort of schocked in this scene along with Leila and you could notice that both suffered from some form of PSD at that precise moment with a mixture of schock and complete disbelief not being able to even stand still, with Vader seeing the weapons power as over kill, while Leia being traumatized by the destruction of her entire planet, neither of them thought Tarkin would actually go that far and Vader merely thought he was just going to blow up a nearby moon or asteroid to make her think they'd actually do it to make her panic,I think from Vader's perspective it was actually a pretty sensless act. I think the mere senseless and cruelty of this act was even beyond what he himself would do, and I believe that the schock for Leila was so bad Vader actually as an act of mercy used medication to calm her down , which ironically might had been the reason why she was able to lead the attack on that very station merely days after, being one of the driving forces behind the rebel alliance victory, but I do wonder did the whole situation leave a dark shadow on her, requiring her to constantly take stress reducing drugs to help her cope with what would be one of the worst trauma's and PSD's in the entire galaxy ,which could also somewhat explain why in the end Leila made terrible decisions in her private life, leading to her son's fall towards the dark side. I mean there's probably no other character in Star Wars universe that doomed entire planets merely through association, and the guilt and trauma associated with this, must had some more serious consequences than what we're being shown in the movie and I wish they actually explored this. As far as Vader or Anakin is concerned I don't think it traumatized him as badly, but he was well aware of the fact that in the end this senseless muscle flexing would only come back to bite the empire in the end, and mostly considered the act as reckless and indeed one that could be devised by a mad man with an inferiority complex, especially since it also revealed the existence of the super weapon, negating it's strategic advantage in being hidden and deployed as a cruel surprise to the rebels at the last minute while also making it seem they had several of these at disposal ,and literally using them to wipe the board, somewhat wasting the weapons potential in fatally scaring for life a single rebel princess,I also think that Palpatine always planned for two Death stars to exist at the same time, making them appear as either a single weapon or multiple battle stations (since it would be impossible for the empire to build the new one in such a short time unless the building was actually started as the first one was being finished) this would mean that Palpatine might had planned for at least three death stars or two one commandeered jointly by Tarkin and Vader and the other for himself.

i have a question what happened to Jedi droids after order 66?
Everything is clear. Ending justifies the means. Their view. Leia had Force powers too.
This is one of those legends stories where it's actually a good thing it no longer is canon. It's kind of an unrealistic story. If Vader thought for a second that Tarkin was doing this without the Emperors consent, he would have not allowed it to happen. No matter if Tarkin was in "command" or not. Nor would Vader allow Tarkin to talk down to him in any way.
