Such a shame that Tarkin didn't survived so that Vader could choke the life out of him, but I applaud the irony. That after so many years of boosting his ego The Mighty Grand Moff Tarkin has fallen by the same weapon that he claimed will make The Empire invincible.

The Death Star was the ultimate symbol of the Empire’s cruelty and fallibility. The rebellion was struggling to maintain its goals and was in desperate need of a major victory. The Death Star provided that victory. And when everyone saw that the Empire was crazy enough to use a planet killer but was weak enough to lose same planet killer, the rebellion only grew.

    • @thunderstudent
      @thunderstudent 7 місяців тому +26

It should also be understood that the destruction of Alderaan was a catalyst for many who were on the fence to join the Rebellion. Because Alderaan was as Leia said, a peaceful world. One with loyal Imperial citizens, officers and soldiers. One that had a lot of resources for the galaxy. To wipe out such a planet that was a cornerstone of the galaxy for so long would cause a backlash of emense proportions. What sane government destroys their own loyal civilization?

    • @darkwulf23
      @darkwulf23 7 місяців тому +14

@@thunderstudent Oh yea, no doubt. It also led to mass defection from the Empire. Many troopers, officers, and pilots were Alderaan-born. But the destruction of the planet killer also needed to happen for systems to defect. Otherwise, systems would be too scared to join.
Edit: Also if you manage to get your super weapon destroyed a day after you demonstrated it's full power, doesn't reflect well on the Empire.

The Empire’s military acquisition process was disturbingly similar to post-Cold War America’s. Except our super-weapons break even more frequently. Imagine if the Death Star was defeated because its super-laser had unforeseen cooling issues and they couldn’t even use it. Or if the hyperdrive had an unforeseen defect and the station could only make teeny-tiny jumps and mostly had to travel through real space.
Leia: “Dantooine. The Rebels are on Dantooine.”
Talkin: “See, she can be reasonable. Commence Firing Sequence.”
      Leia: “What?”
Talkin: “You’re far too trusting. Dantooine’s far too remote to…”
(An out of breath super-laser tech is admitted into the chamber.)
Tarkin: “What is it, Lieutenant? I presume you have a VERY good reason for being here.”
      Vader: “Here it comes.”
Techie: “Sir, may we speak privately.”
Tarkin (clearly perturbed, but also looking resigned): “Please escort the Princess from this chamber so we may speak privately.”
Vader: “Return her to her cell. I am…looking forward to hearing what the Lieutenant has to say.”
Tarkin (sighs): “Very well. We will deal with her later.”
Techie: “Sir, there’s a problem with the thermal management system. If we fire the super-laser we’ll explode.”
Vader: “It is as I have foreseen.”
Tarkin: “As you…foresaw, Lord Vader! And you said nothing? What good is your sorcery if you don’t fill us in on the details.”
Vader: “Sorcery? The Force had nothing to do with this. I built the galaxy’s best pod-racer in hut on a dessert planet. From a box of scraps. I figured we’d maybe get one shot off before the cooling system melted. It did melt, didn’t it?”
Techie: “Y-yes, Lord Vader. It’s very, very melted.”
      Tarkin: “Well, shit.”
Vader: “I told you this technological terror was nothing compared to the power of the Force, Moff Tarkin. Tell me, Lieutenant, what condition is the Hyperdrive in? You make speak freely.”
Techie: “The primary hyperdrive is also…melted. We might get the backup going in a couple weeks. We’ll need to bring in our hyperdrive contractor from Kuat Yards, though.”
Tarkin: “Why did we hire all those different contractors, Lord Vader! This is appalling!”
Lord Vader: “That’s what you get when you hire the guy who puts in the lowest bid. Not my department.”
Techie: “M-may I go, Grand Moff? Lord Vader?”
Vader: “You may take your leave of us, Lieutenant.”
      Tarkin: “You are dismissed.”
      (Techie scurries off.)
Tarkin: “I noticed, Lord Vader, that you did not do…what you usually do when you are…disappointed.”
Vader: “Disappointed? I’m rather enjoying this. Also, Admirals are infinitely replaceable. Good engineers are hard to find. Plus I could really use some me time.”
Tarkin: “So what are we supposed to do, Lord Vader? Just stay here in orbit around Alderaan, floating around like a bunch of assholes?”
Vader: “It is the will of the Force.”
      Tarkin: “I hate you.”
      Vader: “I know.”

@@GrahamCStrouse It would make sense that some systems would have problems as controlling the power of Kyber crystals to destroy planets would cause a lot of drawback, even firing it one. I’m sure even in Rogue One as the Death Star only used a few generators to glass the planet on the surface I’m sure it still had a few hiccups before using full power to destroy Alderaan.
Then looking back on Rebels when Sabine and Ezra found a speeder sized Kyber crystal being shipped off to, assuming, the area where the Death Star was being constructed. Yet, when the stabilizers holding the crystal were sabotaged leaving the entire crystal to go critical mass it still showed how much power it had before being focused into a planet destroying laser beam. Scary, scary stuff without the use of proper engineers and logistics.

Even without a rebel sympathizer having a hand in the design of the first, the destruction of the second Death Star, just proves the point again. Never put all your eggs in one basket. Great Video, where did you get the source with Thrawn and the Tie-Defenders?
This was all in the game Tie-Fighter its from 1995 i believe.
The Tie-Defenders would have made a difference vs the Rebells for sure, the empire always had huge problems to fight the rebel squadrons. It would have been exactly whats needed to secure victory over the rebells.
What a pity. In the game Tie-Fighter the rebels never stood a chance, as the advanced Tie Fighters, Tie Defenders and their typical Star Destroyers made quick work of them, in that game the real pain(meaning difficulty in that game) came from an imperial traitor who used advanced Tie Fighters vs the loyal imperial navy.
Can't deny Death Stars and super Star Destroyers look cool, though. Possibly, the main reasion why i prefer so much the original Triology, in the prequels we did not have these great ship designs.

It's funny how the emperor himself successfully crippled the empire.
9:45 he shoulda just killed Tarkin and said to the emperor that Tarkin insulted the emperor and tried to circumvent his authority.
As for if Thrawn and Vader ruled the empire/swayed the emperor, I feel the rebels would probably have far less of an effect. of course, for plot reasons they'd still win, but without the hubris of the officers and horrible resource drain the death star caused, the empire would likely be a better place to live in. I'd also hope that Vader and Thrawn may look inwards to further improve the empire.

My favorite version of The Death Star is a giant mining machine the empire stuck a punch of "point defenses" a hyperdrive and a deflector shield on and called it a battle station, but was never actually designed to withstand attack and really helpless without said shield if not for the fact the rebels had so little fire power. Where Luke meets the original designer and she's like "they did what now?"
I feel vindicated that the Star Trek reboot made a canon version of that story.

      -Death Star II
      -Mass Shadow Generator
      -Star Forge

It's one hell of a fleet killer flagship but if destroyed it all but cripels the Kaiser's military, until they make another.
And that was the biggest failure of the Dead Star. It was a Weapon of Terror. Not A Weapon of War.
A Battlestation the Size of the Death Star as a flagship that can eradicate entire armadas in one volley has a military purpose.

Han Solo is an example, remember what ge said to Kenobi? He doubted the force.
Po couldn’t understand what Kylo was, nor did he understand how his blaster fire could be stopped in mid air.

I believe Rogue One canonized that the weakness was intentionally put there, but you'd think that someone on the design or construction teams might have looked at this and said "hey, we should put a vent cover here or something" or at least someone else out of the thousands working on the thing may have looked at this and though tit was a massive design flaw and fixed it. Prior to Rogue One Dorkly did a bit where the engineer defends the need for a vent for the massive superweapon's heat, but even so, no protective cover or things to stop bombs from going in? A few thin obstructions down the massive pipe at least?

It wasn't just Vader who hated it the force itself hated the weapon even the dark side of the force battle stations are just like nuclear weapons they create horrible wounds in the force ask Jeda, Alderaan, and any planet the death star has ever touched there are other battle stations more horrible than the death star itself and the force conspired to either make them disappear or in the death star's case destroyed the universe requires a balance of life and death light and dark respectively super weapons like the death star greatly disrupts that balance which is why the force itself hates the death star

Wasn't the deathstar a response to Palpatiene's visions of the Vong? I admit its been years since I read anything starwars so events may be mixed up in my head, but I think he had a vision of rhe Vong battle spheres the size of planets and decided he needed a fleet of ships that could carry weapons heave enough to counter a planetoid sized ship quickly. And there were several dozen planned for? Or something like that?
I'm sure someone with much better, and fresher memory will let me know where I messed all that up.

*The following are the musings of a Salty SEAGULL named EARL who just shows up in my posts whenever he feels like it!*
[EARL the Salty SEAGULL:] "I could imagine Anakin was pretty proud of Luke using the Force to destroy the Death Star as it ultimately proved he was right! He ironically did everything he could to protect the Death Star (trying to recover the stolen plans & defending the Death Star in his own TIE Fighter) yet Palpatine still blamed Vader for its destruction! Makes sense that as the chosen one, Anakin/Vader would recognize the power of the Force was superior to the Death Star & ultimately it was Luke's use of the force guided by the Force Ghost of Obi-Wan that destroyed the Death Star! Sure Anakin/Vader was Luke's father, and like his father did with the Trade Federation Control Station, Luke destroyed the Death Star!"

Emperor Palpatine more than likely just wanted the Eath Star created because he wanted to Inspire Terror throughout the Masses of the Galaxy which would be a Scare Tactic but to those that are Tactically Minded like Darth Vader Grand Admiral Thrawn and Admiral Tagge the Weakness was Glaringly Obvious.
Although since Emperor Palpatine built a Second Death Star he probably didn’t learn his Lesson from the First Death Star’s Destruction and since Palpatine has a Massive Ego and is a Functioningly Psychopath with Much Arrogance he probably thought his Plans Completely Unstoppable.

I agree with Vader. As a kid, the Death Star was really cool. But as you grow up, you realize how much of a wasted construction it actually is. Blowing up planets doesn't serve any purpose. It just makes you look like a gigantic bully needing to compensate for something. The Death Star should have been made as a manufacturing/repair station instead. At least that would give it more use for the Empire.

❌ Get got rid of clones in favor of humans who were inferior.
❌ Palpatine putting people in power who didn't deserve it.
❌ Investing in money consuming projects instead of investing in the empire for better performance
❌ Allowing his arrogance, just like the Jedi, to get a better of him.
❌ Instead of order and stability, they choose fear and intimidation which don't always last
They did more than one great mistake. As soon the empire was formed it was already doomed from the start

Actually I would argue that the Death Star is the Pinnacle of Sith philosophy. If you really think about it and this is a tire Trope in Western media but you definitely see it in Star Wars with every Sith they're about accumulating power and and what that brings to them don't realize is that the unbridled pursuit of that power is what always ends up out doing the sith. Every single time it has the results in the rise of the people who will undo them or the rise of other technologies that will be used against them it might feel like a psycho Revolution but really it's a cycle of Destruction they consolidate power they get great power and then when it's concentrated that's when they are most vulnerable

lets see, we have a weapon the sice of a moon that require INSANE amount of resouces to make, the cost of it would have been completly nuts. it requiers a LOT of manpower (probably enough for well over a thousand star destroyers if not super star destroyers), there is no special codes etc needed to be put in that only the emperor have acces to so the comander of the weapon is able to fire it on anything they want making it a massive risk of the comander stealing the entire thing and trying to make themself the ruler of the emprie. honestly a better method would have been small space stations with weapons aimed down at planets with unrest etc with various lvl of weapons of mass destruction from tactical weapons all the way to weapons able to glass the entire planet. pick the first planet beeing to rebelious deploy those things and glass it or have it above them. most planets probably have some type of weapon like that but for defending aigenst invaders already so it probably able to be used in both ways or repurpesed into it. far less manpower needed in the long run probably far less resources needed. hell a fleet of star destroyers can easly do the same if needed and ships in star wars have been able to make a planet impossible to live on for thousands of years, it was possible even during the infinint empire 25 000 years ago, the mandalorien did it during the crusades to, the republic did it during the human supremesist where the republic was led by a cult for centuries. so yea the death star is a MASSIVE wast of time, money resources mannpower etc and the goal of the station failed completly

Ironic the one thing they seriously needed they turned down outright EVEN when pointed out. An with this an everything connected to it... Vader... Classic Darth Vader was ACTUALLY doing good with this.. an ACTUALLY calling the likes of Tarkin out for the Megalomaniac hed actually become if he hadn't already been. An Vader shoulda been whom Sideous listened to MOST along with Thrawns Strategic genius... Which would a probably seen Tarkin put in his place by the Grand Admiral had Thrawns been there. Bet Sideous woulda felt differently over giving Tarkin so much power had he gotten truly insane an targeted something major like Coruscant, Kessel or Kuat, etc. or any number of other important sites to the Sith..
