I don't see why people keep saying that the voice actors are horrible, gonna be honest. For text to speech programs, they're honestly pretty convincing.
Crimson Doodlebear agreed
@@nisonatic
I imagine it is a lot of work to organize 100s of good voice-acting audio clips into a game mod, and so if I was creating a mod, why couldn't I use text-to-speech as a temporary stand-in, and then if I have volunteers to voice-act, I could add in the audio clips later, if I can ever get it to that point? But creative people tend to be busy with multiple projects, and they may not actually have time to finish it up into a polished voice-acting gem. Would you prefer instead to have no game mod being built?
@@NervesiT
Hey, let's at least give them credit for using new audio lines in the game, and not simply recycling the same old lines from the original game, as many _Half-Life_ spinoffs did with _Half-Life._
So this game is actually real? not fanmade?
@@WindiChilliwack
Hmm. In what way is a fan-made game not real? It can be canon only if the original development team writes the story of the game? I disagree. Other outside writers can add to the overall story, if they make a sufficient effort to make the story to be at least somewhat canon. Even _Star Trek_ manages to contradict itself on multiple occasions.
someone needs to remake this game with actual voice actors
Portal already has voice actors, what are you talking about?
Albert53 i mean, this mod
Hell yea. Also, I wish the boss fight would have more diverse attacks.
i think the tts-voices add a certain charme to it
And a tone that fits. All this excessive swearing and violence.
I think GLaDOS should have realized after being destroyed 3 times, (including this game) that she should prevent any portal devices anywhere near her chamber.
Sheila Bresnahan she hasn't been destroyed yet in this one
She was partly neutralised :p
But she is addicted to testing, and testing requires a portal gun.
And GlaDOS needs to seriously study up on the morality thing.
And like many villains, she incorrectly thinks that she is invincible.

Aperture Science is a massive deathtrap, much like Black Mesa. Must be the simplistic video game logic at work, or might that be too much like reality, what the liar mad-scientists would build if they could?
There's something hilarious about the fact the characters use a text to speech voice.
yes
Agreed
Yeah of all the programming and editing that went into this game, they couldn’t get two people to say some lines
I’m doing an entire 10 hour Portal game run, I have:

4. Portal Stories: Mel
5. Portal 2

When i played it myself the party made me actually happy
I will have nightmares after this mod.
The test people in this game are so evil lol
And finally *sniff* the cake THE CAKE WASN’T A LIE
I see a HUGE problem with this testing track.
The personnel wouldn't actually subject their voluntary test subjects to these hazardous materials. The whole point of the original game was that you grew suspicious over the amount of death traps that became more prevalent as the game went on, until you realize that they aren't supposed to be in the test at all. Those hazards were inserted into the test by GLaDOS.
Only a crazy daredevil would willingly sign onto a test course with acid pools, live turrets, and energy spheres that vaporize you instantaneously.
Of course nobody would sign up for a test like that. That's exactly how Aperture operates in the canon games too, though.
Just listen to the Cave Johnson tapes in Portal 2: Even back when they were testing with highly skilled and successful people, they gave absolutely zero fucks about the safety of their test subjects and the CEO is just casually talking about failed human genetic experiments or the materials you are testing with potentially desintegrating your skeleton.
Pretty much everyone's moral compass there is broken six ways from Sunday, no matter if they're man or machine. They absolutely would get you to sign up under false pretenses and then put you on a testing track like this. Once you're in, you don't have a choice anymore: You either fail and die or you go along with it and try to survive.
@@user-xu1ce4ri4h Even so, the ambiguousness of the first game really worked to its advantage. In its own context, you were allowed to connect your own dots. Deliberately keeping things vague isn't lazy. It's intentional. It gets the audience hooked.
The fact that the second game straight-up says, "Nope, everyone here is just crazy and insane." really bothers me.
Portal 2 has a SERIOUS tone issue.
@@theholygamer969 I respectfully disagree. The issue with mystery and ambiguity is that you can only keep it up for so long. There has got to be a payoff eventually, especially in a video game where making progress is one of the core elements.
The original Portal is very eerie because you have no clue who you are, you don't know what is going on and you are trapped alone in an unfamiliar place that becomes increasingly hostile the more you progress. All the while an emotionless, glitchy robotic voice taunts you endlessly. The GLaDOS reveal is an awesome conclusion to the first game, but once you've gone from being at her mercy to tracking her down and realizing she's just helplessly dangling from the ceiling as you take her apart, she becomes a lot less threatening.
A lot of the dread and mystery is gone after the first game, so I find it very clever that they went with a more humorous approach for the second game and fleshed out the characters and backstory instead of rehashing the first game.
I also find it really interesting how the characters are written, because no matter how you look at it, there really aren't any good guys in Portal, but they are all so endearing that we love them regardless: GLaDOS is as homicidal and mean as ever, Wheatley is your buddy but he killed thousands of people with his incompetence and betrays you in the end, Cave Johnson really knows how to make a speech on lemons but he is a stone cold sociopath and even Caroline was somehow okay with working for a company that profited off human experimentation.
@@user-xu1ce4ri4h True. Human experimentation can definitely be messed up, especially when it's in the Half-Life universe. Obviously, the creation of GLaDOS was the one experiment that fought back and put an end to Aperture as a collaborative effort.
But I don't think they should have gone for full-on comedy in terms of tone. There needed to be a better balance of quiet and atmospheric moments.
And yeah, repeating the first game would have been dumb. The big reveal already happened, so now the gloves are off.
But I think they may have planned something different in development.
There's been some leaked animation tests of GLaDOS retaining her Portal 1 design and being in a completely broken state, saying, "I think I... I used to be bigger. There was a party! Something happened. With food! Starts with a C... Cereal!"
My guess is, they were originally going to go a different approach with GLaDOS's origin rediscovery, as well as the comedic edge.
Being in such a damaged condition, she wouldn't remember anything and be absolutely bonkers instead of hyper-focused.
She'd put you through a testing course because that protocol is the only thing she remembers. You'd be on edge the whole time for a few reasons.
1) She's the central core of the entire facility. If she tries to operate the place without knowing how to keep the crucial functions in check, the whole lab blows up, taking you with it.
2) Rather than being cold and mechanical, she's loopy and unpredictable, so you never know what she's gonna do. She could lash out at any second.
3) If she repairs herself, she might start to recover her original personality, as well as her backup memory. If she remembers what you did to her, then the whole thing would start all over again, and you might never make it out.
But that wouldn't be the only thing she remembers. Before she realizes what you did, she'd remember where she came from and how she was made, revealing her backstory. She might have a total freakout, not even wanting to stay operational now that she's rediscovered her place of origin.
@@theholygamer969 I think the comedy aspects work very well with Portal. Aperture as a company is already quite absurd: An underground facility that goes down for miles, inventions that would have very little use outside the laboratory, sentry turrets with cute childlike voices etc. so I really appreciate that they decided on not taking the franchise too seriously and having fun with it. Horror and comedy go together amazingly and there are already plenty of other murder AI/horror stories, so the quirkiness of Portal 2 really helps give the game its proper identity. Obviously that's just a matter of preference, though. Personally I'm glad we didn't get System Shock with Portals. Those games are awesome too but they already exist.
While the game you describe does sound pretty fun, I feel like it is way too similar to the first game. The Portal games themselves are already quite limited in their story progression because the gameplay requires you to be inside Aperture and there is absolutely no way anybody would be there voluntarily, so you are always going to be a test subject trying to escape. GLaDOS not recognizing you and being unstable is pretty much exactly like the first game where she would also randomly glitch out, cut off her sentences, speak random Spanish etc. If I remember correctly, Valve was briefly considering using a new protagonist for the second game, but play testers did not like it because they were disappointed GLaDOS did not recognize them. I can totally understand that because GLaDOS talking to you is about 85% of the first game's plot and it would be a shame to competely disregard all of that for most of the second game.
I dont get it, rattmans scribbles are on the walls in this, but GLaDOS hasn’t even been activated yet.
