    I thought the whole thing with firebenders being able to create fire spontaneously was one of the things that made them so formidable, and what made them feel superior to other benders.
    Their advantage also helped them create technological advancements that they used to suppress other benders, like *STEEL PRISONS THAT EARTHBENDERS COULDN’T USE AGAINST THEM*
    It hurts to knock a child’s acting, but the characters in ATLA had so much depth to them that wooden, expressionless acting just takes such a huge dump on the internal struggles the characters have. Aang had so much going on that he had to deal with, he felt like a real person navigating his youth, his morals, his desires, and his responsibilities. Honestly this as big of a slap in the face to his character as TLOK was. That’s saying something.
    Also Shymalan’s obsession with changing the pronunciations to be more accurate to how they’d be pronounced in Asian cultures is especially funny when he cast white actors for the Asian and Inuit protagonists while once again casting Indian men as the antagonists.

    • @eowynsisterdaughter
      @eowynsisterdaughter 2 роки тому +85

      I think what happened with the names is that Mike and Bryan spelled them all so they made sense to a Western method of pronunciation. Shymalan looked at just the spelling and said, "that's not how a particular Eastern culture would pronounce that arrangement of consonants and vowels," and didn't realize it was already spelled specifically to not confuse Western audiences. Might be putting too much thought into it, but it really is such a bizarre aspect of the film I wondered about it a lot.

      I recently watched someone who made an in depth video about the cultural origins of ATLA, like the origins of the clothing and what asian culture might have inspired different aspects of the show.
      There's a lot going on in ATLA, whoever made the show did solid research and that Shymalan thought he'd probably do a better representation of real asian cultures by pronouncing the names different is just an insult to the whole show.

    Actually not all benders could create their own element. Waterbenders needed water around them (the best ones made it out of air cus theres water in air). Eartbenders needed earth around them, and Air benders, well its literally air so. Firebenders were the only benders who could create it out of nothing, making them far more devastating and powerful in that regard. That was one of the bigger reasons they were intimidating. But now, because they need a little campfire first. They are seriously the weakest villains in the history of villains. How did these people ever wipe out anything? You explain why its stupid yourself but yeah, its stupid.
    Another thing is they explain that Sozin's comet (which why do they mention it already?) can make firebenders bend out of nothing. So the comet that in the show, made firebenders who could already make fire out of nothing 100 times stronger (as stated in the show) makes firebenders in this movie just as strong as a normal firebender in the show. How boring is that. Like how do you make something as awesome as firebending boring. You have to deliberately try to make your movie as bad as possible to make a decision like that.

      In an interview M. Night said he nerfed fire benders because it was unfair how they can shoot fire out of nothing. Which doesn't make sense because other benders always had their resources on standby. Earth is everywhere, air is everywhere, and water benders had tribes that lived in the north and south poles where water is plentiful (also swamp benders say hi) and water is can be pulled from the air/soil/plant life around them. So what was going through M. Night's mind thinking fire benders needed that crutch is beyond reason.

The elements was similar, but Katara's narration of the last 100 years wasn't even the same and sounds so much more lame. Even just changing "But 100 years ago he vanished" to "But 100 years ago he disappeared", like why? Vanished is cooler word anyway, why change it...? I was triggered in the first 15 seconds lmfao.

    • @MonkParty

As for why it's originally pronounced "Incorrectly" (I'm not sure if it's clarified anywhere but) it could be a number of things. Perhaps the cast were ignorant of the pronunciation, but with how much work went into accurately capturing East Asian martial arts, I'd say that's unlikely. My assumption is that despite it being BASED on East Asian culture, it is it's own unique world and the showrunners didn't want it to feel too much like it was ripped from anime/took too heavily from the cultures. It feels like a deliberate decision regardless of the accuracy, but once again that's purely an assumption. In all fairness: Sokka forgetting his boomerang wasn’t on him would be on par with his character. In this case it wasn’t, but Sokka would toss his boomerang then forget he tossed it.

    Maybe the reason M. decided to change the names of some of the characters was because he knew it was shitty deep down and decided to separate it from the original vision by changing the names. More than likely though, he was having an ego trip and changed their names because he's rich and he can do what he wants.

    How about Hollywood just stops trying to make live action anime? It's in a cartoon format for good reason. Or at least not make a movie that is so condensed that the story doesn't make sense or feels completely hollow.

    There's literally a point in the first chapter where one of the Northern Water Tribe _mispronounces_ Sokka as "So-ka" to spite him.
    Also, why are Katara and Sokka, who are clearly and obviously POC in the show, whiter than the snow they start in, while Zuko has a way darker skin tone?

  • @silentjackm.d4490

    The thing about it is making it where the fire benders have to use pre-existing fire it's just so stupid to me because apparently they wanted to make it feel more grounded like they felt it was unfair that the firebenders could just create fire.
    Which the show explains that yes first of all it is supposed to be unfair it's part of the reason they became so powerful, secondly they draw their power directly from the Sun, and finally technically speaking any Bender can just pull their element from thin air except for Earth and even then most of the places on the planet have Earth so it's still a pretty fair advantage.
    Water benders can pull moisture from the air and surrounding plant life, airbenders control the literal air, earthbenders are literally surrounded by rocks most of the time so every nation has the capability to usually use their element, the fire nation became so powerful because they figured out ways to basically counteract other benders using metal until toph invented metal bending and the old lady figured out how to blood bend

  • @AsleepAura

    One of the most infuriating thing about why the fire benders in this movie needed fires to actually bend was because M Knight thought that if the fire benders can just make fire out of nowhere, it would be unfair
    its like... that was the whole point or something

  • @aliyahabrahams
    @aliyahabrahams 2 роки тому +4

    7:02 In the show, all benders can’t just create elements, fire benders are the only ones who don’t need a source, and even they cannot bend under certain circumstances, i.e. in an eclipse. The changes made in the movie are retarded, though.

  • @THEPELADOMASTER
    @THEPELADOMASTER Рік тому +1

    The earthbender part is supposed to be that episode where they take earthbenders and put them on a metal rig in the middle of the ocean so they can't bend, and Katara has this idea of freeing them by peoviding the earthbenders with coal so they can escape. But they did it so poorly that they had earthbenders... ON EARTH!
    Like the point of that episode is that they could take away their ability to bend, but they shouldn't lose their fighting spirit.

  • @maliaboo7639
    @maliaboo7639 2 роки тому +1

    I always thought the firebending was connected to the sun,
    1) because when the fire nation attacked the water tribe in the end of season 1, they didn't attack at night, because they're weaker when the sun has set.
    2) In the eclipse episode, the firebenders can't firebend, while the sun is being blocked.
    So I guess they do need something to bend, just not fire lol.

    One Of the things I find weird about this movie is mainly around the Kid Actor who played Aang. The weird thing, is that I think he would have actually been perfect for the role. He loves the original show, he's really good at Martial Arts, and If you saw the interviews with this kid, you'd see that he even had the same energy as Aang from the show. Even before he was in the movie Kids in his school nicknamed him Aang. So yeah I think that if Shamalyan wasn't the Director then this kid would have been great......also I think Sokka in the movie would have been a good Zuko

Usually when we came out of a movie, we'd be quoting the best parts if it was good, or have a small conversation about the good parts if it was bad. We came out of this movie and we were all silent the whole way home, but it wasn't uncomfortable. We all knew why no one was talking and we were all fine with that.

    6:59 Nah. The only benders that can just spawn their element out of thin air are the Airbenders and Firebenders remember?
    Waterbenders need to be near water since highly advanced techniques like pulling water out of the air itself is very rare. And earthebenders have to be on solid ground, losing their bending if they're surrounded by metal.

    Fire Benders: Need Fire, yet somehow the ultimate winners and most powerful.
    Earth Benders: Covers fire with Earth
    Air Benders: Bends air away from flames to starve them of oxygen
    Water Benders: Water Bender used Splash. It was super effective.
