- Recently I have had a few people in the comments saying the Thai word 'farang' is racist. So I decided to see what the Thai people of Sydney think of that!

"farangi " is a Persian word or iranian word which means "westerners".
There is a strong community that comes from Iran and has been in Thailand for 450 years. It is very likely that the word "ฝรั่ง" comes from the Persian "فرنگی" ( farangi )
This is the most likely hypothesis that I believe. The first westerner arrived in Siam was Portuguese not French, so why don't we call all westerner โปรตุเกส.
The Persian comes from Arabic faranki which is from the crusader Franks who were not all “Franks” but were English, German, Italian but communicated in French.

This explains in particular the name of this Gulf "Persian Gulf". Iranians do not understand Arabic, just as Thais do not understand Burmese. The Iranian migrants who settled in Thailand originally came from Gorgan (near the Caspian Sea).
Thai citizens of Persian background or descent may be called in Thai: Khaek Ma-ngon (Thai: แขกมะหง่น, แขกมะหง่อน), Khaek Mahon (Thai: แขกมห่น, แขกมะห่น) or Khaek Chaosen (Thai: แขกเจ้าเซน; "Shia Muslim").

Nothing wrong with the word, i think people get mostly upset if you know people and they call you farang, its kinda like knowing an Asian dude and calling him the Asian instead of the name or something more polite. Pretty simple I reckon.

I agree. Like when you're in a shop and you're the only customer but they refer to you as farang instead of lookah. I think an Asian person in a Western country would find it racist if someone referred to them as 'the Asian' instead of 'the customer'. It's just about treating people with respect.
@@posvid but at the same time those born here might not find it offensive if they were in Europe and Someone called them the Asian. Still the widespread constant use it cannot lead to good things.

The word farang is from Persian word farang (فرنگ) or farangī (فرنگی), refers to Franks, the major Germanic tribe ruling Western Europe. Frangistan (Persian: فرنگستان) was a term used by Muslims and Persians in particular, during the Middle Ages and later periods, to refer to Western or Latin Europe. According to Rashid al-din Fazl Allâh, farang comes from the Arabic word afranj.[5] In Ethiopia faranj means white/European people. During the Muslim Mughal Empire when the Europeans arrived in South Asia, the Persian word Farang was used to refer to them since the Muslims knew the Europeans during their Crusades wars in the Middle East. The words also added to local languages such as Hindi and Nepali as firangi (Devanāgarī: फिरंगी) and Bengali as firingi. The word was pronounced paranki (പറങ്കി) in Malayalam, parangiar in Tamil, entered Khmer as barang, and Malay as ferenggi. From there the term spread into China as folangji (佛郎機), which was used to refer to the Portuguese and their breech-loading swivel guns when they first arrived in China.

In my opinion, the word Farang itself doesn't sound racist. But when thai people use this word, you have to listen to the context and their body language to evaluate whether it's racist or not. For me, honestly, I use this word in both different ways.

"Farang" is the way we use to describe westerner too so i don't think any part of it is racist at all.
In the other hand....the way we "really" describe black people in Thailand...now that is racist.

I laughed because it’s true. Millennials like myself find it funny that older generations of Thais haven’t adapted to the somewhat changed attitude towards the n word. And it was through no faults of their own. Learning English as their second language, they simply call black people what they were called back in the days (by western people). Though it wasn’t politically correct, it’s what it was commonly used. Old Thai people don’t use the n word with racist intentions, to them it’s just a word to describe a black person. No different to learning the words “apple” “plate” “sofa”, etc. Now that it’s unacceptable to use the N word in the west, Young Thais don’t use it anymore, but since the older generations are so disconnected to the English speaking world, it will take some time before they realise what the problem is. Everything I said above is for international audience so that they could understand Thai people bit more. On another note, Micheal. G, Go have a cry about it.
When I lived there in 1996, I never considered it as racist...

the word itself is not in question, it's the constant categorization of people by their origins which might be debated..
...or does not need a debate. Its crazy to think we are all "equal" just because we are all "identical genetic biomass of simillar shape". What makes us individual is the influence of factors like family, religion, society, and YES also geography. So categorization by these factors is NOT WRONG and not worth a debate.

Nothing wrong with categorizing people. It's when you that categorization becomes your defining thing (instead of who you are as an individual) that it becomes problematic.
I’m learning Persian and learned “farang” / “farangi” with fruit, and the derivative as my tutor taught me, was “from outside” or “from Europe”. Eg: strawberry = tutfarangi

Posted a video in FB groups and a few expats called it racist because I referred to myself as a farang which really surprised me. Asked my subscribers both farang and Thai and most people not bothered by it to be honest. As with most words, all about context and tone . Many think it comes from the Thai translation of Frenchman but it originally came from Persia and made its way to SE Asia. Great vid as always Paddy.🙏👍 Can I put a link to this vid in my description as well as giving you a shout out. I only have a few subs. but there was a lot of interaction on this topic.🙏

Im pretty confused. Some would say "farang" with the letter R but some would say "falang" with the letter L. Help me out. Im trying to learn Thai and I really want to do this right. Is it common to mix up R with L's in Thai or I just need to clean my ears cause I'm hearing it wrong?

I've never felt that farang has been used as a racist insult towards me. In California we'd say Mexican as an identifier, just like saying Asian, plenty of other terms to use when people were being racist. But I am often surprised at how many people here in the ex pat get their panty's in an uproar about being identified as a farang! 🤣🤣🤣
Well, it's simple really, try putting yourself in their shoes. Just because people back home call Caucasians "them" or "the whites." That doesn't mean it's correct. Calling Latinos Mexicans? Well, that's the first, since we speak Spanish and/or Portuguese. But what do I know, I'm from Northern California.
All I'm saying is that we are humans. We have this gift called empathy, and it allows humans to build a bridge and connect.
Throughout the history, Thailand has never been badly suppressed by other race. Though she was run over by the Burmeses twice, the attack was a brief and withdrawn, not a taken-over like a colonialism. The concept of racism is far removed from the Thais as compare to many other places. Though the concept of beauty by skin color exists. Most Thais prefer light skin color.
See WWII, Thai does what they do best, surrender to the guys who about to subject them.

The" Farang " from the word " Farangy " the Ayutthaya period. That the Arabs who come to serve in the royal court Used to call Europeans to trade and contact Then suggested that the royal court call for that.

I like to have some fun sometimes when I hear the word farang (depending on the circumstance)......and I think you should try this, I'm sure you'll get a laugh.....I like to say "I am not a farang, I am Mak si da" ...."ผมไม่ใช่ฝรั่งผมเป็นໝາກສີດາ" Mak si da being the Lao word for guava (sorry, I used lao scrip for the word ໝາກສີດາ because I wasn't exactly sure how to spell it in Thai).....anyhow, my experience is that most Thai's(at least from the north and north east) know this Lao word and will have a chuckle

My tutor taught me that word "Farang" came from Laos. Reason being was the high presence of French people in Laos. When they came to help out in Thailand, the Thai people would ask where they are from. Due to the different phonetic alphabet and language barrier, it was difficult for Thais to say "France" and would therefor pronounce "Farang". I don't know whether that story is 100% accurate but it makes sense to me.
Anyhow, I don't take offence to being called a farang but I don't like it. In some areas of Thailand (e.g. Pattaya where I live) there is a stigma and stereotype of a farang which isn't too positive. Therefor when I meet new thai people, my Thai friends will always tell them "khao mai chai farang" to state that I am not a foreigner and should be treated equal to the Thai people. :)
If we used a translation like that in the western world it would be considered racist for sure but my wife is Thai so I’m there often and I’ve never felt it was a negative term. Just depends how it’s used. They are more racists towards black people for sure.

well I hope it never hits you. My feeling is that hating on Westerners is not discouraged much and the well-established constant differentiating is a facilitator. Still love Thailand and Thai people for their kindness, generosity and wit.
Driftmatic well said. Thailand is still great. But there is a lot of constant differentiation going on. “Farang” is one of those enabling words that is a constant daily reminder of that, ergo. There are problems with the word.

I don't think Farang is a racist word. It uses to represent white or westerner people. As I grew up in a village far away from the cities. Every time, we saw a foreigner (mostly white), I or my friends would follow them all around and call them Farang as someone we have not quite seen around often. Farang represents of all White skin, blonde hair, color eyes regardless if they are Americans, French, English, Australian, Russian, Spanish or Polish. For African America, Thai people call khon Dum (black), but without making it bad. Some people use the world "khon Pew See" means people with color skin instead. Most Asians from Asia, Thai people just call by individual like Japanese (khon Yipoon), Korean (khon Kao Lee), Chinese (khon Jeen) instead.
They are lot Thais in Sydney. I really love the Thai accent. 💖
I always associated the word farang with (caucasian) Westerners because of France since its the same word. The Thai and Lao people used that term because that is who they knew as the foreigners. Khon Farang, or French person. It became the de facto term by the time other foreigners became more prominent.
I wouldn't consider it a "racist" word (in the way we use that term today) because it doesn't (necessarily) carry a negative connotation. It's not like it's a term that is used to degrade someone.

I think it's racist for many reasons. First it's an easy word to design people based on their skin color. That is not racist in itself i agree. But farang carry an open meaning who is rich people and superiority. In the video they explained it all a poor farang is called farang ki nok which is basically an insult. So farang is superior to thai in mind of many people. That is straight racism. Period. My wife told me about a mixed boy in her school that she and many children called farang ki nok because, it s her quote : they thank he was superior to them and they dislike him for that (in thailand superior is basically rich and/or white, wich some thai people can not distingue and i think the word "farang" can perpetue that). And to all foreigner who don't bother, don't forget about people who have mixed children and who don't want them to be victim of racism at school.
Small thing always happens in every where in the world, but using small thing explain almost thing that is uncomfortable. The word is good or bad depend on, both of relationships, face, voice, tone, body language, situations, the way of thinking, family etc those make person response same word in different way.

It's ridiculous really. I mean, for me racism is about oppression or it's about intolerance or exploitation and division... the inability to see another of a different creed as equal. Fear and xenophobia, or superiority and brutality. If the word falang is used casually as a descriptor - or a way to refer to someones attributes it doesn't necessarily follow that there's any malice or bigotry at all.
Of course it could be used as an insult, but I'm sure the circumstances would allow one to know when it was... Not the most popular idea expressed i know...
In fact your start idea was wrong racism is not about oppression and intolerance. It is wat can lead to that. Farang is a racist term because it design people based on their race and only on that : it deny every idea of culture. Personally, i find it offensive and apparently im not the only one.
I corrige myself : it is offensive more than racist.
I feel like this is just a common slang that when literally translated won't mean the same thing as how it's used in the context of conversation. Like the same way some Mexican Americans will refer to people from Mexico as paisa which is short for paisano that translates to countrymen. And there's a word called pocho which is like somebody that's mexican that doesn't speak Spanish. Slang always depends on the region the language is spoken in, at least I think that

I’ve heard like the guy in the yellow beanie. That Farang comes from when the French colonised Indo China.
Also the theory it comes from Persian from the ‘Frankish’ Empire when most of Europe/France was controlled by the Germanic Franks.
The fruit, Guava, is from the ‘New World’ ie South Anerica and would’ve arrived with the Europeans. Much like many fruits and veggies, like ‘Man Farang’ ie Potato.

A long time ago I got the idea that Thai people who had been overseas and on return had taken on foreign ways,and perhaps acted in a superior manner, could be referred to as ฝรั่งขี้นก .

Love_Symon17 hi 👋 it’s a difficult question because it was my first language to learn so I just did anything I could! I went there as an English teacher living in a rural part of Thailand so I had complete immersion in an area where not much English was spoken. What I would recommend is to learn in full sentences, learn how to read and write (will help your pronunciation) and always carry a notepad around. If you enjoy it, the motivation won’t be difficult and you will get better fast! Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Love_Symon17 There's something you have to know if you're coming to Thailand anytime soon (I'm writing this feeling weird, why does it sound intimidating lol.)
First one, How to call a name of places in Thailand. You just think of that "Hotel California" song. In Thai, we put a place’s name in front of a type of place. For example, when you're landing at "Suvarnabhumi" Airport, the Thai name of it is "สนามบินสุวรรณภูมิ", "สนามบิน" means airport, and "สุวรรณภูมิ is it’s name Suvarnabhumi.
Second one, we don't have the sounds of "V", "Th", "Ch" in our pronunciation. The reason that we put it in english spelling of thai word because our root words and some parts of our culture were from India, so we replicate the original.
"V" sound in Thai is pronounced as "W".
"Th" sound is pronounced as "T".
"Ch" sound is pronounced as "Sh".
Lastly, I'd like to recommend you a youtube channel called "Adam Bradshaw" He's an American who lives in Thailand and has his own English tutoring school for Thai students. He's very famous here in Thailand for his Thai speaking. His videos are fun to watch and easy to keep up. Maybe you want to confuse yourself by pretending to be Thais and learn English from him and in return you might get the idea of some similarities and differences of these two languages. Probably depends on the context. The word can either be neutral or negatively perceived.
If a Farang were to try and integrate into Thai society and lived there for decades then being called Farang probably wouldn't feel good. It's a bit like telling them they'll never be part of the society/culture.
However, most Farangs are tourists/temporary stays and will probably only care if its used to clearly disrespect them.

To the point where Koreans (who look very similar to the Japanese) will even get discriminated against. Pretty sure they also have some local bars in Japan that only allow native Japanese people.

Hi Im Thai and Farang in my opinion came form France / Francais . In the Thai history, France was dealing business with Siam. I guess France was hard to speak for siam people that time then
This is a surprise to me actually. Being half Thai I’ve sometimes experienced discrimination, but I never though the word ‘farang’ could be seen as such. Honestly I think the main problem of racism in Thailand is people will speak rudely or give you bad service if your a foreigner, most of the time this is directed towards people of darker complexion such as indians, Malays, etc. There seems to be this thing that such people, called ‘Kaek’ are cheap and barbaric. A lot of the times however, a Thai, especially one who is not well travelled, will make remarks that might seem racist but are most often due to ignorance or stereotypes that have been engrained in their minds by society. I’ve once had someone ask me if my dad works in the cloth industry (because I’m half Indian) and I don’t blame this person. A lot of Indians in Thailand work as tailors, heck, the Thai court used to import most of their cotton garments from india since the ayutthaya period, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that stereotype is common. In the end I think that people shouldn’t worry too much about the word ‘farang’ or ‘keak’ because it’s just one of those terms of description that our ancestors in Ayutthaya some 400 hundred years ago came up with or borrowed just to make sense of the plethora of foreigners coming in to trade. There are far worse forms of Thai racism than this, and I think these interviews pretty much sum it up. This is a good video.
Sometime, some ppl try to make a small/normal thing to be big/bad thing with nonsense/negative attitude. 10 years ago my foreigner friend told me that his friend advice him to fight/give them bad words when thais call him Farang.
... I roll my eyes, my advices, you should leave the friends like that who negative attitude that make your mind hard to be happy with many thing. Farang is very common use with foreigner, words is good or bad depends on voice, tone, action, relationships, etc. Although it make you feel not good, just pass/laughing etc no need to deal with it or take a shit.

There are words that are used to describe people of different appearance in Thailand but they don't really have any ill-intent to them. Example, Tee, Moiy, Paa, Jek for Chinese-looking people of different sexes and ages. Farang for whites, Khon dum for black and Kak for Indian, Southern, Western Asian looking people. There is also 'Bung' for the Thail Southern who are Muslims as well. Most people in When I was attending the military service in Thailand, they are used casually all the time, nobody thinks they are racist.

For me I think the origin is when French first landed in Thailand. People couldn't pronounce the word "France" or "French" in French correctly so they just said "Fa Rang".
Apparently, for Thai, the word "Fa Rang" doesn't sound offensive. Just to refer to or categorize the race.
I've never known it to be a word of malice or have derogatory intentions. Plus there's no history of hate and injustice behind it so I don't think its a racist word. If it was used in a way to describe someone that you thought was beneath you or less than human then I could see how it could be but yeah just my 2 cents.

I agree with the beanie guy, if one looks are the progression of the word - Old word for French people was Franc, ----> Ifrangy (Arabs)---> Firangi (Persian)---> Firangi ( Urdu, Hindii) ----> Farang (Thai).
There is also another version/ explanation, however I doubt the validity. Plumeria flowers native to Phillippines, Indonesia. Laos, and Malaysia are called Firangipani. It is said that European traders brought these flowers to India. Culturally in South Asia, Firangipanis are associated with ghosts and death, it is said the word Firangi was associated to describe the pale skinned and their ghostly demeanour/attitude.

This may be wrong but the word for “stingy” sounded quite similar to the Japanese word キモイ (Kimoi) which has a similar meaning🤔
Nice video. At 5.20 for the English subtitles referring to the word “ขี้โม้” ( kee moor ) I think I would say “a show off” rather than stingy. For someone who is known to be tight with money they are normally called ขี้เหนียว ( kee neaow). Hope you don’t mind the correction. People always correct me and I encourage them to. It’s how I’ve learnt Thai.

My Thai isn't as good as yours, but I mostly speak Thai with my gf, and I once told her that if she came to the US, she would be the farang and that she could not refer to every person she encountered as a "farang" anymore. Her mind was definitely blown 5555.
Also, I take no offense to the word farang (though for people who move to Thailand and make an effort to learn the language and culture I can see how one could get annoyed being addressed as the "foreigner" when you see Thailand as your home). In that case, it doesn't feel racist so much as disrespectful coming from friends or the workplace. For context, I worked as a volunteer in Southern Thailand.

I always thought the word meant white foreigner, which initially I was thinking why I'm a foreigner in Thailand. But then I thought about this. In a lot of mostly Asian countries they have words for foreigners: Gaijin, Gwailo, I mean even in the state I'm in they call white people haole. And we are part of the US, so no matter what language some people will get offended for whatever reason.

My parents generally use the word farang to describe foreigners and not necessarily just white people. I don’t think it’s racist at all but maybe the way it’s used might be ‘rude’. Same way we can say “those nice foreigners’ or “that dirty foreigner”. Depends on context but yes, generally it means foreigner.

Today I learnt how the word farang derived from. Really I do. There are words used in Singapore/Malaysia to label/name a foreigner. Sounds racist or not its a matter of how the tone is used. I am sure in USA, Australia and England where there are predominantly Caucasians/whites, I am sure there are similar label/names for Asians. In our country we also have a word to refer to westerners (specifically white Americans). The word is “Kano” “คัโนะ”. Like “ฝรั่ง”, it isn't a racist term as well.
I confirm that this word alone is not a racism. But yes you must listen to the whole sentence or context to judge what they mean to. Fortunately if you are not an a..hole and not doing something stupid, Thai people will not be racism at all.

the correct spelling is farang with R, but in CEntral THailand the R is generally and iNFORMALLY prounced as L. in Laos and Essan R doesn t exist at all. in Lao language the word is MAK-SEE-DAA, but nowadays laotians prefer to say FALANG as well, specially young people in the cities. Southern Thais pronounce the R correctly. in the deep south near the Malaysian border it might also be too strong.

It is the minority that determines if a word is racist, not the majority group using it,.
There are many addjectives/suffixes that Thai people used to add to the word "Farang", for example, "Ta nam khao" used to describe a farang who has eye color resembles rice water, "Dungkor" used to describe the shape of a nose bridge that resembles a hook, "Angmor" means red in Chinses used to describe a farang with red hair, "Mungka" this word presumably comes from the word "Bengal" that had gone through shifts in pronunciation over a certain period of time.
PS- You may have also heard of something like "farang kee nok" (fake farang or a Thai acting like a farang)
The feeling when you look Thai, get asked if you’re Thai, and you tell them (in your broken Thai- so far) that you’re Chinese lol. Just one time where I’d rather be “Farang” and it’s easier to explain stuff lol. The locals don’t really know where to place me.
