    As a pianist myself, I cannot stress enough how hard this piece is. Some techniques in it are just unbelievably difficult, and the way Lang Lang manages to play them beautifully with such ease absolutely boggles my mind.

      Totally agree, I’m easily early advanced into advanced , 15 years experience, got the music for it, spend a few days on it and just could not get past some of the techniques.. it made me realise how good Liszt was and appreciate him more.. to be able to write and play something like that lol Lang Lang and others who can play this have really studied their shit

      It's bananas the way he gracefully comes off of some notes, and how casually he leans into certain notes as if he's waltzing with the piano. He's mastered this piece. His body language suggests he's beyond comfortable playing this piece and that it's second nature to him.

      Or you're Yundi Li, or even better Gyorgy Cziffra, and you go on to play the same piece immensely better, with either more stamina or sensitivity. Either one would be more precise anyways. ;)

He always has that face like _"I don't really know what I'm doing, but it sounds good."_ never have I seen a more relaxed piano player, and think of that: he's playing liszt!!

  • @dustinholland6700
    @dustinholland6700 3 роки тому +901

    This is why Lang Lang is my favorite pianist. He can take pieces that are essentially just showing off difficult technical skills and make them expressive and beautiful. In my opinion that's more important than being overly concerned with lightening fast tempos and super technical playing, because in the end that's what music is for; to be beautiful and pleasant to listen to.

      @@marshan1226 he's overdoing it, taking away from his performance. It's distracting. Even listening to it with my eyes closed, I would say he would've been better focusing on the piece itself. He got carried away and it shows. Showmanship comes from actually delivering a piece, not by playing it up. There is a difference. I'm not saying he's a clown or he's bad, this is probably one of the top performances of this piece out there, still in 2021, but it's just a little conceited for me, and, for him, probably not as nuanced as he would have liked if he focused less on the crowd and in the music itself.

Comprared to most other pianists on that level he is really boring to watch since it’s all about the technical stuff and nothing about the music. Whenever he plays the piano I just get the feeling that he tries to show off. For example, have you seen his performance of rondo alla turca? Lisitza and Kissin also play it quite perfect but I got the feeling they’re a bit stressed or at least they play it like they were. Lang lang plays it like I play fucking “Für Elise” without any sense of being very concentrated but hits every note perfectly. And then the very fast passages he plays even faster but still so crystal clear like the last 30 secs are just light speed and I also love his mid section trill yea it’s only a trill but man that trill got fire. I think this -at least for me- is the best interpretation and best performance out there.

    what is so insane about this performance is that the song itself is extremely difficult to learn for many pianists. it can take months and months to play this song through at proper tempo with minimal errors.
    but then on top of all of that, after all of that time and frustration just getting to that point, you then are tasked with learning to play it like THIS, which is a completely different beast. the true potential of this song cannot be expressed if it is played like a calculator spitting out numbers - even if no mistakes are made.

    It's so funny how the general Lang Lang hate is picked up by almost every single "expert" in music on the internet. There are so many people talking about the interpretations of interpreters like Lang Lang in such a ridiculous way. You do not have to be as good as those people in playing the piano to say what you like and what you dislike, that is very true. BUT: You should still give credit to someone for playing on such a high level. And despite all possible interpretation-errors that all the critics might have witnessed, Lang Lang (eventhough I don't like most of his interpretations) is exceptional when it comes to technique. His style is (under the circumstances that it's not a pure show-off performance) absolutely flawless, his hands move beautifully and the technique is absolutely far beyond brilliant.
    Stating things like "Liszt would not have"...what the fuck? I wouldn't even take that comment if you had studied music and piano itself. Plus the chance that even 30% of people, posting those comments have probably close to no musical education, is pretty high.
    As I said: you do not have to be an expert to tell what sounds good to you and what doesn't. But then leave the level of criticism on the level that your knowledge about the topic is.

    Dear Haters:
    This is the way Liszt is supposed to be played; over the top and flashy as hell. As a result of this style, Lang Lang probably do justice to other more relaxed composers' pieces, but for Franz Liszt? Definitely warranted.

      rémi L. Yeah pretty much, Liszt would play parts of his songs with one hand while looking at the audience, he was demonstrating skill over feeling and emotion. it's right to be a complete show off with his works, I mean if you're good enough to play them in the first place it's warranted

      Haha wow this argument is so irrelevant to this video. ;-) I appreciate the support but I'm also not offended. If grammar is your thing then pounce on me all you want (some people may not want you to for them, but I'm fine with it). But I will say that there's been a longstanding debate about when to use "addictive" vs. "addicting" and most dictionaries qualify both as feasible in the same context. "Addicting" is the present participle adjective of "addict" but can be synonymous with "addictive." But again I'm not really passionate about which to use. And anyway I'm glad I got this notification for this debate because now I can listen to this video again. =) Have a great rest of the day, whoever happens to be reading this.
