  • Have you broken your Seagate External Hard drive port? It's a mystery how it happens sometimes, and a little daunting when you break the only point of connection to plug into a computer.
Fortunately, all is not lost. With Seagate external hard drives, you are able to go in and remove the adapter that connects to drive, allowing you a secondary SETA port to plug into. With the help of a $25 "2.5 inch external hard drive enclosure", you'll have your files back up and running in no time!
This will be a how-to video as we walk through the process of getting your files back with a broken seagate hard drive port.
USB 3.0 2.5-inch External Hard Drive Enclosure Adapter Case:

For different sized drives, you can use this Hard Drive Docking Station:

Thank you so much. I had the exact same issue with my seagate. I called seagate and they said it was out of warranty, so they cannot do anything.
They suggested that I go to third party services. I ran to Best Buy and some local dealers and they basically said it could cost anywhere between $600-$1500 and could take 7 weeks or more minimum.
I was so glad I found this video, it saved my life. I had all my photos on this drive. Thank you again!

i just want to say thank you SO much. This still works a dream in 2025. Believe it or not, the hardest part of this for me was actually removing the original covering/enclosure of my hard drive. Took me so damn long - for anyone struggling, I recommend using an old bank card, it worked a dream after days of using my nails, scissors, other random flat things I could stick in there to pry it open!! My seagate hard drive also didn't fit in this enclosure due to 4 coverings and screws - if you're unsure if unscrewing them will cause a problem - they won't! I took one for the team and it was absolutely fine. Fits perfectly once you remove them and no damage to the hard drive at all. Thank you again sir. This is amazing!!!!

I'm very appreciative for an easy and inexpensive solution I was able to do myself. BTW, I also bought an ORICO hard drive holder so I can contain the enclosure and cable in something that will protect it from poor quality components from Seagate, as well as, my negligence.

First of all, thank you SO much for making this video, you saved me a lot of headaches and so much data 😭
Second, I used this method with my hard drive, which is NOT Seagate, it's Toshiba. I took a chance on removing the shell because I was desperate and thankfully it worked out. I know many people are wondering if their drives can be saved using this -- and I'm not saying they can, I just wanted to add my non-Seagate experience. I got my hard drive from Amazon in 2020, so there may be hope for whoever else comes across this video.

I had a drive with a similar issue and didn’t realize I could slide off the circuit board that makes it into a portable drive. I saw this video and I ran downstairs to get it. I already had the transfer cable from a dead laptop harddrive rescue.
After more than 10 years I will finally see what I has on that drive and as a bonus I will have a free TB storage drive that has been a paperweight for a decade.
My drive is one of those old style HDD that was just repurposed to be a portable drive.
If this doesn’t work I see that I can just hook up a computer power supply and a data cable. Never even considered that until now. I assumed it was screwed unless I used that broken USB port.

If it wasn't the loss of a port, there may be other things you could try, but i think using a case would be the simpler option; considering you'll have to resolve the port issue one way or another.(either repairing/replacing the port, or put it into a case which bypasses the broken port.) Hey Mickey, sorry to hear about your hard drive!
It is hard to say exactly what it is when it doesn't really have many noticeable signs/symptoms.
It could be that the connector got damaged when it dropped, depending on the surface and how it fell. (the power is working, but it could be one of the metal prongs that connect to the board has broken; that's what happened to me anyways.)
You're not hearing any clicking etc when it's plugged in and spinning?
You could try this procedure in the video, which should rule out any fault with the adapter/connection from the cable to the drive; otherwise you may just have to have someone have a look at it unfortunately.
I wish i had a more clear solution for you man, sorry!

    • @greenviewmedia6186

Hey there! That is a tough one. The seagate drives have an adapter piece which makes it easy to take off if the port is just broken, and just use the SATA connectors with an encloser, however with other brands i'm not sure if they have the similar setup.
I've seen a number of videos where you have to replace the board to fix it for Western Digital specifically, but perhaps if you have a working board/port from the same brand, you may be able to gather the working pieces to recover your current drive. Worth a shot anyways. Sorry i couldn't be more helpful. Let me know how it goes if you do try it!
