    Do you do prep sound in Resolve for transcodes too for the sync sound workflow or do you bring them in as is without doing any transcoding and metadata column adjustments? For example, the Reel column or Tape column.
    What’s best practice for sound prep?

    • @theavidassistant
      @theavidassistant  9 місяців тому +1

      No prep for sound. Just bring it into avid via an import and get to sync'ing. Sound metadata is always embedded in the file from the sound recording device. Generally in the tape and tapeID columns.
      We tested once sync'ing in resolve and then exporting out sync'd dailies MXFs for ingest into avid but that was a disaster. Caused issues in online. Best to do sync in the NLE you will edit in.

    Hi Jack, Hows it going?
    I have a quick question , I am trying to make a music video with pictures flashing on the beat ... of course I can see the beat in the audio section but I cant move the image exactly right on the beat ...Is there anyway to turn off the time grid so I can put the picture right on beat? I was assuming it was a frame rate thing but I'm not sure... if you could help me with this question I would be much appreciated!!!! Is the answer I am looking for in one of your tutorials?

    • @theavidassistant
      @theavidassistant  7 місяців тому +1

      Not quite sure what you mean by the "time grid" but I think what you are trying to do is sub-frame editing. Unfortunately in avid, the smallest increment you can move anything in is one frame since that's what film/tv is based around. You'll likely have to just pick the closest frame either side of the best on the waveform.

      @@theavidassistant in a d.a.w. Digital Audio Workstation you can set a time grid to like 1/4th , 1/8th , 1/16th of a note and so on but yeah subframe editing sounds more like what I was looking for in my phrasing of the question!!! I tried setting my frame-rate at 100 fps but that is not working out so great either... I thought id at least have more wiggle room to use but instead its worse than 30 fps but thankyou so kindly for helping me out.. i look forward to watching more of your tutorials in the future !!!! wishing you all the best 👽👽👽

      @Dj_Dennis_in_the_Mix_1 Yeah in a DAW you could do it. The avid workflow is geared towards offline editing where the final sound will be done in a DAW like ProTools or Logic Pro :)

    I've found perf slipping is available without enabling the Film option when creating a new project. Once the synced clip is created, you can go to it's Source Settings, and under the Audio tab you'll find you can advance/retard the audio sync in respect to the picture.

    • @theavidassistant
      @theavidassistant  9 місяців тому

      Yeah you can slip it that way but that would be painfully slow to do for every clip when sync'ing a days rushes no?

    • @brunomansi8669
      @brunomansi8669 9 місяців тому +1

      @@theavidassistant I'm assuming that with modern equipment, the TC generators are pretty stable over (say) a morning's shoot. Any initial drift between camera and sound timecodes should remain pretty constant. Once the error is established, shouldn't it be possible to highlight all these clips, slip the sound and apply to all?

    • @theavidassistant
      @theavidassistant  9 місяців тому

      @brunomansi8669 Yeah. That is one of the things I get into in the longer videos. Once you notice the drift on the sync map you can push all sound 1 or two frames in the right direction which will likely correct for the rest of the day (though not always so you still need to go through and check them all).

    Thank you for sharing your wisdom!
    With your preferred sync method, it seems Avid creates sub-sequences rather than subclips, treating them like short sequences. This makes them challenging to edit. Is there a way to turn these sub-sequences into subclips, so Avid treats them more like individual clips? I feel like that’s the tricky part.
    Also, in the project I’m editing, each sound take comes in five separate .mov files. Is there any way to combine these into a single audio file with five audio tracks in Avid?
    Thanks again for your help!

    • @theavidassistant
      @theavidassistant  10 днів тому

      Hey!
      So with the sync map method, the last step is to select all those sub sequences, right click and select "Auto Sync" which turns them all into clips. This should be in the video as well.
      As for your other question, do you mean .wav files? A .mov is generally a picture file as "mov" is short for movie. In which case these should be combined into one clip upon import if they have been recorded correctly. If you send me an email at theavidassistant@gmail.com I can try to help further :)

    Hello! Thank you for this tutorial. I wanna ask you why does the autosync option cuts the image if the audio recorded (the clean sound) is shorter.

    • @theavidassistant
      @theavidassistant  2 місяці тому

      Technically both options will do this! You can't have gaps or edits in a clip. It's a match of two pieces of media. So if the audio cuts out half way through you would subclip the second bit out separately and that would be a MOS clip. Partly why I prefer sync maps as these are easier to spot as you do them.

  • @JulianWillemsen
    @JulianWillemsen 9 місяців тому +1

    Another reason to make syncmaps instead of autosync is to have my audio tracks have proper names. I use BWFWAV-rename from Lextvuk which populates the track-name the audioguy put in in front of the audiotrack. The editors love it.

      @@theavidassistant And there won't be any problems in Pro Tools relinking from mix to all tracks if the tracks has different names?

    • @theavidassistant
      @theavidassistant  9 місяців тому

      @westhidk when you rename the tracks it still keeps the original data. So if you rename "A1" to "MIX TRACK" It gets called "A1 / MIX TRACK".
      There's no problem relinking because that data is still there. You are just adding more info.

      Nice 🙂i wanted to try this a few times to help our editors with better track naming. But i've been warned against it by some. Gotta try it. Thanks a lot for the very quick answer. Need to test that soon 🙂 @@theavidassistant

    Using autosync and Auxillary TC1 as the choice to sync - what happens if 'Keep audio on clip with video' is selected, range starting A1 to A1? This seems to produce two tracks, and modifying the clip to just one, is just the attached scratch clip when synced up?

    • @theavidassistant
      @theavidassistant  2 місяці тому

      If you select "keep audio on clip with video" then it will add however many tracks of audio are on the source picture files. For me that's usually zero but assuming in your case there's one.
      Then setting range A1-A1 should be referring to the sync audio. So one track from camera, one track from sync audio.

      @@theavidassistant Giving a bit more information to the problem. Resolve was used to sync the picture and sound from some rushes, by adjusting slightly if a few perfs out. Resolve project had original camera footage and original wavs linked inside it. This was then rendered to create video and audio mxf files. An ale including colour information was exported from the resolve timeline.
      The mxf video and audio files went into Avid MediaFiles folder/MXF folder into '2' folder. The ale was imported into the masterclips bin, 'Maintain events as logged' Clips relinked, remerged for missing data.
      Original source wavs were dragged into an audio bin, creating avid generated mxf's in a '1' folder in MXF folder.
      To autosync some subclips, the wav clips from the audio bin are dragged into the masterclips bin. They are all highlighted and then autosync selected. Synced by AUX TC1.
      If the "keep audio on clip with video" is not selected, then the synced single audio track links to the wav directly.
      But this wav will not be synced up as it was in Resolve, or is it?
      Am I right in thinking that the information from the AUX TC1 column, is the adjusted data that means the clips will be synced up properly, if linking to the wav directly, not the masterclip bin which has the sound rendered from resolve in the bin?
      Sorry it is so long, as is hard to describe well.
