It was a very close competition, in fact there were not two, but three! USA, Switzerland and New Zealand. At the time of the Top 5, Julie was first, Lolita second, and Lorraine third; there was no Q&A section, so the judges put aside the semifinal ratings and voted for their favourite. The winner was the beautiful Lorraine, with Julie as second and Lolita fourth, with Roberta (Miss Ireland) third.
Lorraine herself has said that she was told by the judges after the pageant that she won it because of her personality and unaffected nature…not ‘just’ because of looks.
Julie is just fantastic, sexy, striking, glamorous. Her Californian blonde curls and banging body. Her gown was so iconic and modern till this day. Standing in a room with Lorraine when they met the US president, Julie overshadowed a timid soft spoken teenage Lorraine with her confidence and womanly stature. It’s safe to say back then miss universe picked the girl who was more innocent and typically younger to cater to the universe. That’s why the best Miss USA’s never won miss universe like Debby Shelton, Amanda Jones, Judi Anderson and Julie Hayek all placed 1st ru respectively to Marisol, Margarita, Margret, and Lorraine. It’s clear that those who they lost from were more shy and not as outspoken as the Americans. That’s why most winners are 18. I love Lorraine so much tho! Always rooting for the underdogs. Very difficult choices❤
@@SpedUpSongs2007...that's a bit mean spirited... Meeting the president is not the Miss Universe competition!... We were very proud of Lorraine in Aotearoa, New Zealand!

That had to be close between she and Julie.
