  • Episode #73
What happens to a small stream when the stocking trucks stop showing up and non-native trout stop getting dumped in by the hundreds? That's precisely what I aim to find out in this episode as I head out for some flyfishing on a trout stream in Northern Connecticut that was retired from the stocking schedule about 5 years ago.

well you did it. I'm planning on fishing a secret stream here in Mass. the next couple days. dame situation was stocked up until maybe 12 years ago. it doesn't get much pressure now. last time I fished it I landed 25 natives. arthritis has prevented me from out there again. Well I'm gonna do it. love your videos good to see you out there.

Like all your videos but this one has stirred me up so much I think I m going to do an old hike in flyfishing g day trip in the Adks on a stream that doesn’t see too many humans and is all wild brookies. Next week during the week it will happen! Thanks for getting me motivated to get back in that area again. It’s Gods Country and the stream you filmed this video looks pretty similar. Gorgeous brookies ! And plenty of them hit the dry fly also! Very cool footage underwater of their release too. Thanks for taking us along on yet another beautiful outing! Take care and tightlines!

Also, btw, is that a Lamson Liquid fly reel? I was thinking of getting one like that to match up with my 3 wt. fly rod. If it is , how do you like it?

Wonder if there were wild trout in this stream when it was stocked. Looks like the native/wild brookie population really grew. Perhaps because of now competition from stocked trout.

Have you ever fished Choggam Brook, which meanders beside Skiff Mountain Road in Kent? Haven't been there in many years and have no idea the condition of that narrow, shallow stream. We used to catch Brookies there. I just subscribed to your channel.

Nope, not familiar with the stream, at all. I’ll put it on “my list” to check out of these days, though.

Awesome video, have you fished the salmon river yet this spring? I’ve been killing it there

I usually get out to the Salmon at least once each spring, but it’s sort of slipped by me this year. Been too focused on prospecting new streams and it’s definitely taken from time that might otherwise be invested in more familiar water. But I may just get out there soon. Have to see how the schedule shapes up.

I know you’ve fished the east branch of the salmon brook with very good luck. You should try the west branch around salmon brook park. I go there all the time since it’s so close to my house. It’s not uncommon to catch 60 native brookies in one day, and there’s some trophy (14 inch+) in there. I caught a wild rainbow there recently. There’s some wild browns in there, but few that I’ve caught have exceeded 17 inches. Last year, I even landed two wild Atlantic salmon juveniles which were conformed by DEEP. This year, I had the fortune of getting an adult 25 inch salmon that came early for spawning purposes in the fall. I didn’t get to land it, but last Autumn I was targeting brookies when I saw a wild tiger trout. It is a truly impressive stream and you should definitely try fishing it.

Odds are it was a lake run salmon. Not many make it back from the ocean, cause the commercial fisherman up around Maine and Canada get most that Connecticut stocks. Sadly the Farmington river ines csnt survive making it over Rainbiw dam in Tarrifville. Those that make it past the gate for milking them that is. Th ou se that they do get the eggs and milk from are then stocked in the upper Naugatuck river in Thomaston and Campville areas. Great fishing for those but it's all timing and beating everyone else there that knows about it too ! Good luck and tight lines everyone !

@@k3corvette35 I’m not doubting you, but the presence of other anadromous species in the stream shows there’s access from the ocean for sure. (Maybe via fish ladders but still) hundreds of sea lampreys make it there to spawn and die so why can’t a salmon?
Also I find it surprising that they steal the wild one’s eggs; I know deep keeps their strain alive by reproducing the ones they have, but why exterminate the population completely by taking the eggs? It’s easier to introduce fish into the pre existing population than to wipe it out and replace it again
