someday we'll take the "it's what's in the inside that counts" literally and start getting surgeries to change the shapes of our hearts to look like the shape, or just start rearranging our organs into the 'ideal' arrangement.
The only earlobe surgery I ever heard of was to fix gauges. For people who regretted them and had overstretched ears. That's so funny that now they're saying it's for aging.
@dd I've seen some and they always had just huge holes in their overstretched earlobes. If they wore plugs they would look really good. If they randomly decided to get gauges, they wouldn't have to stretch treir earlobes, maybe a bit if they wanted them bigger. But they wouldn't have to go through the annoying phase of small plugs.

I have stretched lobes, but my holes are only 12mm. I think body modifications require much more thought and foresight than many people are prepared to provide. You must accept, and really consider, that some procedures are irreversible without surgery.
@Sine Nomine I liked my 20 mm and I swear something like that never happened to me. I could pop in bigger ones, but it was enough just not to do it. Sleeping without them makes the skin tighter too. I love how I look with 20mm, because I have quite big lobes and ear shape that makers them look smaller somehow. So I'll stick to my beloved 20mm when I get them back. Thank you for advice but you don't have to worry for me, I know what and when to do 😘
A lot of people worldwide bind their feet and are totally unaware of it. Most modern shoes are not naturally shaped and restrict the outgrowth of the big toe joint. (Look up bunions)
The idea of dark circles being a beauty trend is odd to me, because for the longest time I felt insecure about the dark circles I was naturally born with. I'm learning to love my natural features, but it's nuts how fast beauty standards can change.
My whole life Ive always loved dark circles and even enhance mine with makeup (...which I barely know how to do and rarely ever do,and even more rarely go out of the house with) but part of the reason was I liked it was BECAUSE it was considered undesirable or 'bad' by conventional beauty standards (I'm a bit of a contrarian when it comes to that...), and because it makes you look tired or sick. I've always loved being able to see veins under the skin too, including under the eyes. I had no idea it had become a beauty trend, except outside of the "sick/drunk/hungover" japanese makeup look that was popular a bit ago... which I kind of am a fan of. I think it influenced the type of blush that "e-girl" makeup has... but im not really that clued in on trends so I'm not really sure lol. But outside of trends, there will always be a subset of people who really like a particular feature you're self conscious about 😁 even if it's hard to remember or believe when the internet is screaming this or that, or your parents or whatever keep asking "are you getting enough sleep!?" P.s. dark eyebags aren't directly linkedwith being tired! I think it's actually partly caused from the skin being so thin that you can see your veins through it, like how you can see the bluish hue on your wrist from your veins (which you cant really do anything about), and partly caused by rubbing your eyes when you're tired, which can break some of those tiny fragile blood vessels there's so it's sort of a subtle "bruise", and since the skin there is SO thin, the slightest change is visible. If you rub them when youre sleepy and can stop yourself from doing it, it may help reduce the darker appearance. Of course that's only if it bothers you that much, I don't think it's dangerous at all or has any other effects besides temporarily the appearance. Using cool packs or a metal spoon ran under cool water (VERY lightly!) pressed against your eyes can temporarily help too, tho mostly with puffiness. It's a great trick if you've been crying and don't want anyone to know ......not that I've needed to use that trick several times or anything...... 😅
I struggled with my dark circles for the longest time and once I finally started to accept it, one of my "best friends" remarked that dark circles look objectively worse and there's nothing I can do about it. She posed herself as an avid supporter of body positivity too. Took me a while to realise that she was just being toxic and that I should love myself either way. Fuck her and fuck social media.
Mine resulted in getting some sort of bruise like spots near my eyes and around the sides of my upper nose So it's weird to see people do anything to have a eyebag/dark circles look to look quirky while people who are insecure about them feel like a joke
I've always loved my dark circles, and my most recently developed under eye line, it's like aegyosal but not fatty, I dig it. It genuinely suits me and I will actively avoid concealing them when touching up my face with makeup. The cute youthful would never work on me, I've always looked best with the mysterious gothic sleep deprived rbf look, if I were to try and describe it lol. Dark circles are sexy and fun!!
when i was a teen i worried about that because my older sister did (she's 13 years older than me), but as i grew older i didn't care about that anymore. i don't mind it. because my mum is aging gracefully. she has never dyed her hair but she's got such nice salt and pepper hair. she doesn't get greys, she gets white hair. i think she's embracing it because all the women in her life never got to live to even get white hairs. her mother died when she gave birth to her at 19 and her grandma died in her 40s. she's 64 this year. i'm 29 in april, still young. getting a few wrinkles, but i don't mind. my sister is in her 40s and still tries to look as young as her youngest (she's turning 19). 😅
Imma be starting the aging movement, in which we do everything to look older. Dye our hair platinum white, fake wrinkles with makeup until the day we have our own, embrace back pain, take a bus to do nothing downtown, retire at 37
as a ballerina, my calves are one of my proudest features because I work so hard and those muscles show that work. I'll never be insecure about those muscles. don't let beauty trends determine your view of yourself
My only issue with my large calves is finding fitting pants as I'm also tall but have narrow hips. There are no pants in the world that tick all three without the need to tailor

I did martial arts as a kid, and have the genetics to be a woman bodybuilder if I cared to. I'd much rather be my short, robust self and capable of kicking a guy's butt than crippled to appeal to an insane body standard that will change in three months. Viva la muscles!

For me it was kind of a relief, I knew my hips didn't look "normal" but I couldn't figure out what the deal was. Having a name for it took away the anxiety.
Ugh! I've been struggling so much with mine! I always envied the classic hourglass shape or the pear shape, and not knowing what my hip dips were caused me anxiety. Now i know what they are but still no progress in the loving them department 🥲

True. We should stop caring about beauty standards instead of seeking surgeries or things to “fix.” It’s gonna make us miserable in the long run. There’s so much more to us than just beauty. It’s exhausting how women are only seen as valuable based on if we’re beautiful.. we gotta stop giving in to these standards to make some real change. Beauty standards just feed into the patriarchy.
I remember reading a copy of Heat magazine on my grandma's coffee table when I was about 6 years old. They had a segment called CIRCLE OF SHAME where they'd circle pictures of celebrities' body parts that were considered ugly. I remember the specific moment that I learned that knees could be unattractive, or that the little blob of fat near your armpit where your arm meets your shoulder is something I should feel insecure about.
Omg I’ve always had those little blobs and always hated it. Even my mom squeezed one once while I was wearing a tank top and said something like “why are your armpits so fat when the rest of you is so skinny?” She was just wondering because true, it was an interesting thing, but it made me feel so much more insecure about them
Omg the blobs! 😂 I've always been an athletic stick person and I never had them, but just a couple years ago, when I hit my mid 30s, I noticed they had arrived. At first I was horrified, but I had to stop myself and think "What the hell am I worried about?" It's weird, but the little blobs make me feel good about myself, like I finally look like a normal healthy weight person instead of a lanky twig.

I find it weird and fascinating how the east and west have beauty trends the opposite of each other. Seems we all want what we can't have and the other aide of the fence looks greener.
I learned about this in school one time. Basically any beauty trend in any country is usually the opposite of whats the norm there. If the norm is dark skin, the beauty trend is lighter skin so skin lighteners are pushed out even if they’re dangerous and harmful
The calf muscle thing is so freaky, IMO. Here in Brazil, big calves are the beauty standard, so women usually go to the gym to get bigger leg muscles; and I see this as something positive (since people are just getting more reasons to exercise). I cannot even fathom the idea of losing my ability to run to get thinner legs...

I think it's weird how people get extreme plastic surgery for little things that only matter in social media. In real life, people hardly care about how you calves look or if your ears stick out a little. Like, social media is molding our reality, but people hardly live on it.
I think it can arguably be the same for people who get lip fillers/lip lift, breast augmentation, bbl, etc. Just goes to show how easily we get influenced/targeted for our insecurities and how these industries and media profits from them.
I really wanted chopstick legs as an insecure overweight teen. I'm almost 30 now & my legs are still thick as they used to be, I just like & appreciate them more now for giving me the ability to run after my cat when he's eating toilet paper.
I've always had thick thighs and they're literally one of the only features of my body I actually like (I've got a pear body shape) and I've always loved seeing other people with thick thighs, it's such a beautiful feature and I'm glad to hear you accepted yours
I had no idea people were intentionally getting protruding ears. In the US it's not considered desirable for your ears to stick out too much. I thought it was odd that so many Asian actors had ears that stick out. I thought that ears weren't important to their beauty standards. Man did I totally misread that one.
@TanukiMika! eh I think sometimes art styles/stylistic traits have sort of a reflection/influence on beauty standards, like you can find a good amount of art of women who are incredibly hourglass shaped for example, but I think you are partially right as it seems some traits (like the overlapping eyes) are probably just stylized traits that don’t have much to do with beauty standards
I grew up in an asian household as the only child with protuding ears there were quite a lot of unwelcome comments about my "chimpanzee ears" and who I inherited them from so yeahh I'd say it's more of a recent development
People want to have features that make them stick out from the rest. In western countries its desirable to have tan skin because its a pretty rare trait. In asian countries tan skin are quite common, so they want fairer skin. Same with ears. I personally think potruding ears are also cute, but its not something i notice first in any person.
There was this book I read in middle school where (if I remember correctly) every person was shipped off into this one city to become "beautiful". Everyone started "ugly" but when they came of age they got their appearance changed and they lived a high society life. I haven't thought much about that book until now. (Editing cause I forgot to mention the books name) The book is called Uglies by Scott Westerfeld (2005) and the summary is "Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. In just a few weeks she'll have the operation that will turn her from a repellent ugly into a stunning pretty. I loved that series! I read it as a really insecure tween and it often comes to mind when ehen i see the micro trends in plastic surgery. I really want it to get popular so that maybe more people could see how utterly insane some of the trends currently happening are.😂😂

I have something called Stahl's ear deformity. The top of one ear is sealed to a point like an elf. I hated it as a kid and was constantly made fun of for it. I begged my mom for surgery to change it. As an adult it’s barely noticeable and I actually like it now. I’m glad that I never changed it or removed the small mole on my face. Let yourself grow into your face before you decide to change it.
There’s a cpop idol named Winwin who has the same thing with his ears and his fans call it his “fairy ear”. Sorry you got made fun of for that, I personally find those ears beautiful.
I always think about the whole "growing into your face" thing. In my teens I felt really self conscious about my nose because it felt overly prominent and out of place on my face, but as an adult post puberty, I barely even think twice about my nose, I cant imagine my face with any other nose.
True. It's honestly kind of terrifying because not only do your facial features still change until at least 22, your brain isn't completely developed until 25. I feel like unless someone is born with some kind of serious issue that needs correction, people shouldn't be allowed to have surgery before they're 25 😖
Yeah. It used to be fashion magazines and teen magazines before that. If you didn't buy them you could escape this madness. Nowadays it's pretty much everywhere and you get bombarded with plastic surgery and beauty trends left, right and center - pretty much no matter where you live. Thanks to Tik Tok it seems like every week there's something new to hate about your body that you "need" to change and then a few weeks later it's suddenly a trend. You just can't win... 😶
Deleted my instagram 2 years ago because of how much it factors into my depression and I have never felt so much better in my day-to-day life. Just a bunch of pretentious people on there who cares only about their appearances and it's just draining to look at. These beauty trends are just plain stupid to begin with and it is kinda sad to see that this affects young teens questioning themselves if they fit these "standards". Social media is a deluded view of reality and we need to break loose from it for the sake of our mental health.
At the same time when I was a kid people were demonized for getting plastic surgery while every magazine told everyone they are ugly and need to do facials and treatments like all the celebs. That just won't cut it for some people even some celebs. I don't think it's great to get obsessed with surgery and have hundreds of procedures done that's a lot of trauma on your body but most people who want something done get one or two things that's really bother them fixed an I view that in the same vein as getting braces. My friend got a rhinoplasty because she had a serious deviated septum so it's also not always for cosmetic reasons been telling my mom to try Botox in her back for her chronic pain.
When I was little, my sister told me that the reason I had dimples is because the dimple fairy put nails through my cheeks as a baby, and my dimples were the scars. The fact that that's now actually a thing really does my head in.

Getting your ears to stick out is kind of funny. When I was born back in the 50's some parents were having stitches 🪡 put in their babies ears to keep them from sticking out. If everyone learned to love their quirks the plastic surgeons would make way less money. But to each their own. 😸
In my family, a dominant trait is big, sticking out ears. It was not 'normal', but it was mostly considered cute or simply went unnoticed by others. As we grow, the ears fit the head better, and all the kids in the family stop looking like Dumbo by adulthood.
Same. Kids with sticky out ears got made fun of at my schools in the 90s and 00s. I was made fun of for glasses and sticking out teeth, and now glasses are trendy in the west and uneven teeth (yaeba( are popular in Japan. Apparently, in the 80s glasses were on trend too. I was just born in the in between time!
Trends are so insane. I got bullied mercilessly for having sticking out ears and freckles. Now there are people getting surgery to make their ears stick out more, and paying real money to buy products that give them fake freckles. It boggles my mind how trends can literally 180 like that.
i think literally every feature out there, there are people who believe it is beauty, and some who believe it is ugly. so i think that we should stop caring so much, because it is not possible to please everyone out there. you are beautiful the way you are 💗

Everyone always commented on mine my entire life and told me to sleep more (which doesn't change anything in my case, even with 16 hours of sleep) or gave some other dumb advice that didn't work. I once even had a makeup artist do my makeup and she actually couldn't "fix" the way they looked. They were still clearly visible under the makeup. I couldn't care less about them though. I rarely ever wear makeup, let alone any "fancy" makeup. 🤷🏼♀️
The ear thing is wild to me. As a toddler my Mom literally walked out on my then pediatrician after he insisted that they STAPLE my ears to my head so as to avoid 'getting teased' later in life. My ears look identical to these altered and purchased ears and I have only ever gotten compliments for my ears my entire life (after that pediatrician tried to ruin my face and head that is).

What scares me the most is how fast the plastic surgery 'trend' spread in the west. I swear that just a few years ago it was only the celebrities that were getting these surgeries but now it seems like everyone is getting something done regardless if they're an influencer or not. I've always been told that the US is the least judgemental country in terms of people's looks but I can't help but notice how they're getting more and more obsessed about their appearance. I know that social media might make it look worse than it actually is but still??
Depends on where in the US you're talking about. A lot of social media is based in LA/SoCal bc that's where a lot of the entertainment industry is (hollywood etc) but most people in the US aren't like that.

💯 I remember straight hair being a trend in the early 2000s. I have curly hair that I used to straighten it but got fed up with the process. So I left my hair alone. Now everyone’s getting perms.
It's still amazes me every time whenever I hear a new trend that is some thing that I was bullied for an elementary school. I was bullied for my freckles and people not only use makeup to make it look like they have freckles but they actually tattoo them on their face. Are used to be made fun of for my ears slightly sticking out and now it's a trend. I will never understand any of this... also I was not expecting you to throw some random shade at the end. It’s a shame exotic body mods are illegal for doctors to perform in most places. I’m happy for people to get elf ears or forked tongues or implants if they want them but it is a worry that the procedures are usually performed by “body modification artists” who are mostly self-taught and have little to no formal medical training because the clients have no other options. If people want body mods badly enough they’ll find a way to get them, so I wish it was possible for qualified plastic surgeons to provide the service so it can be performed in a hospital or clinic with legally acquired safe equipment.

my mom actually got the calf muscle blocking surgery because her bf told her she has become fat and i told her not to get it because it’s risky but she still did it. i myself am insecure about it too from then on, i hope to gain more confidence

I think the reason attractive people have protruding ears is because when cameras are far enough away from someone for their ears to be showing there's less of a fisheye effect in the camera, they have a narrower nose. Their eyes are closer together and not on the sides of the head, and so on.
I watched a recent vice doc in Japan with people getting plastic surgery and how lots of kids are getting surgeries now like especially on their eyelids. It was sad because the child and mother were interviewed and it was clear the mother was projecting her own insecurities onto her daughter and said she was cuter after surgery.

I broke my nose twice, the second time it didn't heal right. I now have a humped, crooked and bulbus nose because of it. I have a badly deviated septum because of this too. But my parents didn't let me get the surgery to fix all of these issues because they never thought to think how much it'd make me hate my nose. So now on top of the beauty standards, and my nose, I feel so swarmed with negative thoughts about my body. I appreciate Ed for pointing out society's obsession with beauty. and making people even just the slightest bit more aware of how impactful the industry is with making people hate themselves.

I was really surprised by people wanting sticky-out ears bc I have sticky-out ears and I hate them, they're considered unattractive in the UK and at times I've wished I had the money to get my ears pinned so I wouldn't look so silly. In my country there are people that literally put glue behind their ears, so they get attached to the head, either because of bullying or aesthetic reasons. I used to struggle a lot for having thin and long legs when I was a teen because it's not considerated beautiful, and I used to avoid wearing any clothes that could show them. We even have a name for those kind of legs "cambito" lol.

aegyo sal and eye bags r pretty different actually!! eye bags are a lot lower down, darker and usually due to the way you sleep or the fat deposits under your eyes, whereas aegyo sal is actually due to an under eye muscle that looks a lot thicker on children!! as you grow up, it tends to only show up when you smile, so having aegyo sal makes you look younger and more happy
The ear surgery really shocked me. I remember kids being picked on in school for having ears that protruded more than average. One of these kids was literally called a monkey for his ears.

Oh my god. You are right. This was a feature that was made fun of in elementary school! A boy called me 'rabbit ears' in middle school 😑. I was upset yes, but I never gave serious thought about it nor did i become insecure. I always found some way to love myself when mean ppl like that made comments on my body parts. Protruding ears were considered ugly and goofy so recently ago, everyone was getting their ears pinned back. People used to stress a lot about hiding their ears with their hair if they stuck out too much when I was in school. Now it's cool to push them forward. Using surgery to follow trends seems like a bad idea.
I was born with club feet which hindered the growth of my calves. I get muscle pain still from the surgery I had and it boggles me why anyone would fuck with their body unless they absolutely need to
I think eyebags that that other feature are different things. The other feature is just a piece of skin to make up you lower eyelid. Eye bags are swollen pockets in between the eyes and cheeks either natural, from lack of sleep, or unhealthyness

For the ear stuff, when I started working at a jewelry/piercing store, it was pretty common knowledge that people got their ears done cosmetically. Especially if their piercing was really low or it tore. For the elf ears, I actually follow a body mod youtuber named ScreamKiwi and she got them done a few years ago now?? But she's done a bunch of stuff for the art of body modification
The 'elf ear surgery' thing is both understandable and really weird to me. I like my naturally pointed ears but then again I've also had someone tell me they were the 'mark of the devil' so 50/50 I guess.
Unfortunately it’s an illegal procedure in most countries so they’re not performed by actual plastic surgeons. Usually if a person wants elf ears they have to find a body mod artist (often a piercer and/or tattooist who has branched out) willing to do it in secret, which makes the procedure much riskier and probably not executed as well as it could be with better tools and medical knowledge.
Being recognized as a ballerina due to my calves is the biggest compliment and pride for me in spite of a full life being called things like "transvestite legs". It' s my fav muscle of the human anatomy. Period😌
To be fair, seeing that a procedure to have your ears sticking out more exists, makes me really happy. My ears (naturally) look like all the after photos and ngl it makes me feel a lot better about them. I've always been insecure about the way they stick out, but now I see people with "regular" ears wanting to look like me, and it's kinda wild
Actually, aegyo sal is completely different from eyebags. Eyebags are much lower on your face than aegyo sal is, which sits right below your eye. If someone tries drawing aegyo sal and draws it too low, it would look like eyebags and would look bad in their standards

Every week there’s a new body part that tiktok/corporations think needs fixing. I didn’t even know what hip dips were until I saw a video on “exercises to remove hip dips!” and started feeling insecure 🫤Every time I’m in public, I compare myself to other bodies: wide hips, flat stomachs (mine isn’t even bad, it’s the closest you can get to having a flat stomach without intense exercise or being at an unhealthy weight), perfect and shiny skin, full lashes, big breasts and butts, etc.; it’s a huge problem. I reckon I’m not the only girl struggling with her self esteem because of these beauty trends. I just wish social media could leave our bodies alone, we weren’t made to be changed :(
tbh I think the difference between aegyosal and eyebags is that the former is the little band of fat directly under your eyes/tear duct area, whereas the latter is overall a much larger area. I have naturally quite noticeable "aegyosal" but the rest of my under eyes aren't particularly swollen or dark (thankfully!!) I know that to the average westerner there isn't a difference and most would like any perceived puffiness gone, the same way I think of really protruding ears as a "defect" (I know several people who've had them pinned back) it's nice to know that something considered ugly in one part of the world can be considered beautiful somewhere else.
The one about the "dog guy" is misleading. As far as I've seen in articles, he did not get any plastic surgery, and he stated that while he does enjoy roleplaying as a dog witn his costume he is not trying to live his entire life as a dog like some people say.
As someone who's always had protruding ears and was kinda bullied for it growing up, that made me both happy and sad to see. My mom had hers stitched back when she was a teenager, but I'm glad I never did. I started liking mine in my twenties.

As a child I though feet binding was a way to torture women, to keep them from being able to run away. Thay it only was a means for control. Now I understand it was also fashion, and we are no better now.
The calf neurectomy thing is so strange to me, because it looks terrible on me 😂 but I guess it would look better on someone who is overall thin (I am "curvy," not plus-sized but big hips/boobs). I know because I broke one of legs a couple months ago and couldn't use that calf, so that leg is literally giving "chopstick leg" and it's made me very self conscious while I'm trying to build the muscle back 😂 but I guess I can feel happy knowing my right leg is attractive in China 😂

The only earlobe surgery I ever heard of was to fix gauges. For people who regretted them and had overstretched ears. That's so funny that now they're saying it's for aging.
Just going to wear my gauges till I die so I never have to see how saggy my lobes would look without them 😅
@dd I've seen some and they always had just huge holes in their overstretched earlobes. If they wore plugs they would look really good. If they randomly decided to get gauges, they wouldn't have to stretch treir earlobes, maybe a bit if they wanted them bigger. But they wouldn't have to go through the annoying phase of small plugs.

I have stretched lobes, but my holes are only 12mm. I think body modifications require much more thought and foresight than many people are prepared to provide. You must accept, and really consider, that some procedures are irreversible without surgery.
@Sine Nomine I liked my 20 mm and I swear something like that never happened to me. I could pop in bigger ones, but it was enough just not to do it. Sleeping without them makes the skin tighter too. I love how I look with 20mm, because I have quite big lobes and ear shape that makers them look smaller somehow. So I'll stick to my beloved 20mm when I get them back. Thank you for advice but you don't have to worry for me, I know what and when to do 😘

The idea of dark circles being a beauty trend is odd to me, because for the longest time I felt insecure about the dark circles I was naturally born with. I'm learning to love my natural features, but it's nuts how fast beauty standards can change.
My whole life Ive always loved dark circles and even enhance mine with makeup (...which I barely know how to do and rarely ever do,and even more rarely go out of the house with) but part of the reason was I liked it was BECAUSE it was considered undesirable or 'bad' by conventional beauty standards (I'm a bit of a contrarian when it comes to that...), and because it makes you look tired or sick. I've always loved being able to see veins under the skin too, including under the eyes. I had no idea it had become a beauty trend, except outside of the "sick/drunk/hungover" japanese makeup look that was popular a bit ago... which I kind of am a fan of. I think it influenced the type of blush that "e-girl" makeup has... but im not really that clued in on trends so I'm not really sure lol. But outside of trends, there will always be a subset of people who really like a particular feature you're self conscious about 😁 even if it's hard to remember or believe when the internet is screaming this or that, or your parents or whatever keep asking "are you getting enough sleep!?"
P.s. dark eyebags aren't directly linkedwith being tired! I think it's actually partly caused from the skin being so thin that you can see your veins through it, like how you can see the bluish hue on your wrist from your veins (which you cant really do anything about), and partly caused by rubbing your eyes when you're tired, which can break some of those tiny fragile blood vessels there's so it's sort of a subtle "bruise", and since the skin there is SO thin, the slightest change is visible. If you rub them when youre sleepy and can stop yourself from doing it, it may help reduce the darker appearance. Of course that's only if it bothers you that much, I don't think it's dangerous at all or has any other effects besides temporarily the appearance. Using cool packs or a metal spoon ran under cool water (VERY lightly!) pressed against your eyes can temporarily help too, tho mostly with puffiness. It's a great trick if you've been crying and don't want anyone to know ......not that I've needed to use that trick several times or anything...... 😅
I struggled with my dark circles for the longest time and once I finally started to accept it, one of my "best friends" remarked that dark circles look objectively worse and there's nothing I can do about it. She posed herself as an avid supporter of body positivity too. Took me a while to realise that she was just being toxic and that I should love myself either way. Fuck her and fuck social media.
Mine resulted in getting some sort of bruise like spots near my eyes and around the sides of my upper nose
So it's weird to see people do anything to have a eyebag/dark circles look to look quirky while people who are insecure about them feel like a joke

It genuinely suits me and I will actively avoid concealing them when touching up my face with makeup. The cute youthful would never work on me, I've always looked best with the mysterious gothic sleep deprived rbf look, if I were to try and describe it lol. Dark circles are sexy and fun!!

when i was a teen i worried about that because my older sister did (she's 13 years older than me), but as i grew older i didn't care about that anymore. i don't mind it. because my mum is aging gracefully. she has never dyed her hair but she's got such nice salt and pepper hair. she doesn't get greys, she gets white hair. i think she's embracing it because all the women in her life never got to live to even get white hairs. her mother died when she gave birth to her at 19 and her grandma died in her 40s. she's 64 this year. i'm 29 in april, still young. getting a few wrinkles, but i don't mind. my sister is in her 40s and still tries to look as young as her youngest (she's turning 19). 😅
Imma be starting the aging movement, in which we do everything to look older. Dye our hair platinum white, fake wrinkles with makeup until the day we have our own, embrace back pain, take a bus to do nothing downtown, retire at 37

My only issue with my large calves is finding fitting pants as I'm also tall but have narrow hips. There are no pants in the world that tick all three without the need to tailor

I did martial arts as a kid, and have the genetics to be a woman bodybuilder if I cared to. I'd much rather be my short, robust self and capable of kicking a guy's butt than crippled to appeal to an insane body standard that will change in three months. Viva la muscles!

I remember reading a copy of Heat magazine on my grandma's coffee table when I was about 6 years old. They had a segment called CIRCLE OF SHAME where they'd circle pictures of celebrities' body parts that were considered ugly. I remember the specific moment that I learned that knees could be unattractive, or that the little blob of fat near your armpit where your arm meets your shoulder is something I should feel insecure about.

Omg the blobs! 😂 I've always been an athletic stick person and I never had them, but just a couple years ago, when I hit my mid 30s, I noticed they had arrived. At first I was horrified, but I had to stop myself and think "What the hell am I worried about?" It's weird, but the little blobs make me feel good about myself, like I finally look like a normal healthy weight person instead of a lanky twig.

I learned about this in school one time. Basically any beauty trend in any country is usually the opposite of whats the norm there. If the norm is dark skin, the beauty trend is lighter skin so skin lighteners are pushed out even if they’re dangerous and harmful

The calf muscle thing is so freaky, IMO. Here in Brazil, big calves are the beauty standard, so women usually go to the gym to get bigger leg muscles; and I see this as something positive (since people are just getting more reasons to exercise). I cannot even fathom the idea of losing my ability to run to get thinner legs...

I had no idea people were intentionally getting protruding ears. In the US it's not considered desirable for your ears to stick out too much. I thought it was odd that so many Asian actors had ears that stick out. I thought that ears weren't important to their beauty standards. Man did I totally misread that one.

@TanukiMika! eh I think sometimes art styles/stylistic traits have sort of a reflection/influence on beauty standards, like you can find a good amount of art of women who are incredibly hourglass shaped for example, but I think you are partially right as it seems some traits (like the overlapping eyes) are probably just stylized traits that don’t have much to do with beauty standards
I grew up in an asian household as the only child with protuding ears there were quite a lot of unwelcome comments about my "chimpanzee ears" and who I inherited them from so yeahh I'd say it's more of a recent development
People want to have features that make them stick out from the rest. In western countries its desirable to have tan skin because its a pretty rare trait. In asian countries tan skin are quite common, so they want fairer skin.
Same with ears. I personally think potruding ears are also cute, but its not something i notice first in any person.
There was this book I read in middle school where (if I remember correctly) every person was shipped off into this one city to become "beautiful". Everyone started "ugly" but when they came of age they got their appearance changed and they lived a high society life. I haven't thought much about that book until now.

I have something called Stahl's ear deformity. The top of one ear is sealed to a point like an elf. I hated it as a kid and was constantly made fun of for it. I begged my mom for surgery to change it. As an adult it’s barely noticeable and I actually like it now. I’m glad that I never changed it or removed the small mole on my face. Let yourself grow into your face before you decide to change it.

I always think about the whole "growing into your face" thing. In my teens I felt really self conscious about my nose because it felt overly prominent and out of place on my face, but as an adult post puberty, I barely even think twice about my nose, I cant imagine my face with any other nose.
True. It's honestly kind of terrifying because not only do your facial features still change until at least 22, your brain isn't completely developed until 25. I feel like unless someone is born with some kind of serious issue that needs correction, people shouldn't be allowed to have surgery before they're 25 😖

Deleted my instagram 2 years ago because of how much it factors into my depression and I have never felt so much better in my day-to-day life. Just a bunch of pretentious people on there who cares only about their appearances and it's just draining to look at. These beauty trends are just plain stupid to begin with and it is kinda sad to see that this affects young teens questioning themselves if they fit these "standards".

At the same time when I was a kid people were demonized for getting plastic surgery while every magazine told everyone they are ugly and need to do facials and treatments like all the celebs. That just won't cut it for some people even some celebs. I don't think it's great to get obsessed with surgery and have hundreds of procedures done that's a lot of trauma on your body but most people who want something done get one or two things that's really bother them fixed an I view that in the same vein as getting braces. My friend got a rhinoplasty because she had a serious deviated septum so it's also not always for cosmetic reasons been telling my mom to try Botox in her back for her chronic pain.

In my family, a dominant trait is big, sticking out ears. It was not 'normal', but it was mostly considered cute or simply went unnoticed by others. As we grow, the ears fit the head better, and all the kids in the family stop looking like Dumbo by adulthood.

I was made fun of for glasses and sticking out teeth, and now glasses are trendy in the west and uneven teeth (yaeba( are popular in Japan. Apparently, in the 80s glasses were on trend too. Trends are so insane. I got bullied mercilessly for having sticking out ears and freckles. Now there are people getting surgery to make their ears stick out more, and paying real money to buy products that give them fake freckles. It boggles my mind how trends can literally 180 like that.

Everyone always commented on mine my entire life and told me to sleep more (which doesn't change anything in my case, even with 16 hours of sleep) or gave some other dumb advice that didn't work. I once even had a makeup artist do my makeup and she actually couldn't "fix" the way they looked. They were still clearly visible under the makeup. I couldn't care less about them though. I rarely ever wear makeup, let alone any "fancy" makeup. 🤷🏼♀️

The ear thing is wild to me. As a toddler my Mom literally walked out on my then pediatrician after he insisted that they STAPLE my ears to my head so as to avoid 'getting teased' later in life. My ears look identical to these altered and purchased ears and I have only ever gotten compliments for my ears my entire life (after that pediatrician tried to ruin my face and head that is).

What scares me the most is how fast the plastic surgery 'trend' spread in the west. I swear that just a few years ago it was only the celebrities that were getting these surgeries but now it seems like everyone is getting something done regardless if they're an influencer or not. I've always been told that the US is the least judgemental country in terms of people's looks but I can't help but notice how they're getting more and more obsessed about their appearance. I know that social media might make it look worse than it actually is but still??
Depends on where in the US you're talking about. A lot of social media is based in LA/SoCal bc that's where a lot of the entertainment industry is (hollywood etc) but most people in the US aren't like that.

Aegyosal and Eyebags are different things. Eyebags are lower and are often dark, while Aegyosal is actual under eye fat.
It's still amazes me every time whenever I hear a new trend that is some thing that I was bullied for an elementary school. I was bullied for my freckles and people not only use makeup to make it look like they have freckles but they actually tattoo them on their face. It’s a shame exotic body mods are illegal for doctors to perform in most places. I’m happy for people to get elf ears or forked tongues or implants if they want them but it is a worry that the procedures are usually performed by “body modification artists” who are mostly self-taught and have little to no formal medical training because the clients have no other options. If people want body mods badly enough they’ll find a way to get them, so I wish it was possible for qualified plastic surgeons to provide the service so it can be performed in a hospital or clinic with legally acquired safe equipment.

I think the reason attractive people have protruding ears is because when cameras are far enough away from someone for their ears to be showing there's less of a fisheye effect in the camera, they have a narrower nose. Their eyes are closer together and not on the sides of the head, and so on.
I watched a recent vice doc in Japan with people getting plastic surgery and how lots of kids are getting surgeries now like especially on their eyelids. It was sad because the child and mother were interviewed and it was clear the mother was projecting her own insecurities onto her daughter and said she was cuter after surgery.

I broke my nose twice, the second time it didn't heal right. I now have a humped, crooked and bulbus nose because of it. I have a badly deviated septum because of this too. But my parents didn't let me get the surgery to fix all of these issues because they never thought to think how much it'd make me hate my nose. So now on top of the beauty standards, and my nose, I feel so swarmed with negative thoughts about my body. I appreciate Ed for pointing out society's obsession with beauty. and making people even just the slightest bit more aware of how impactful the industry is with making people hate themselves.

I was really surprised by people wanting sticky-out ears bc I have sticky-out ears and I hate them, they're considered unattractive in the UK and at times I've wished I had the money to get my ears pinned so I wouldn't look so silly. It actually helps to know this is just as arbitrary as other beauty standards, so thank you - this video really helped!
In my country there are people that literally put glue behind their ears, so they get attached to the head, either because of bullying or aesthetic reasons. I used to struggle a lot for having thin and long legs when I was a teen because it's not considerated beautiful, and I used to avoid wearing any clothes that could show them. We even have a name for those kind of legs "cambito" lol.

aegyo sal and eye bags r pretty different actually!! eye bags are a lot lower down, darker and usually due to the way you sleep or the fat deposits under your eyes, whereas aegyo sal is actually due to an under eye muscle that looks a lot thicker on children!! as you grow up, it tends to only show up when you smile, so having aegyo sal makes you look younger and more happy
The ear surgery really shocked me. I remember kids being picked on in school for having ears that protruded more than average. One of these kids was literally called a monkey for his ears.

Protruding ears were considered ugly and goofy so recently ago, everyone was getting their ears pinned back. People used to stress a lot about hiding their ears with their hair if they stuck out too much when I was in school. Now it's cool to push them forward. Using surgery to follow trends seems like a bad idea.

I think eyebags that that other feature are different things. The other feature is just a piece of skin to make up you lower eyelid. Eye bags are swollen pockets in between the eyes and cheeks either natural, from lack of sleep, or unhealthyness

For the ear stuff, when I started working at a jewelry/piercing store, it was pretty common knowledge that people got their ears done cosmetically. Especially if their piercing was really low or it tore.
For the elf ears, I actually follow a body mod youtuber named ScreamKiwi and she got them done a few years ago now?? But she's done a bunch of stuff for the art of body modification

The 'elf ear surgery' thing is both understandable and really weird to me. I like my naturally pointed ears but then again I've also had someone tell me they were the 'mark of the devil' so 50/50 I guess.
Unfortunately it’s an illegal procedure in most countries so they’re not performed by actual plastic surgeons. Usually if a person wants elf ears they have to find a body mod artist (often a piercer and/or tattooist who has branched out) willing to do it in secret, which makes the procedure much riskier and probably not executed as well as it could be with better tools and medical knowledge.

Actually, aegyo sal is completely different from eyebags. Eyebags are much lower on your face than aegyo sal is, which sits right below your eye. If someone tries drawing aegyo sal and draws it too low, it would look like eyebags and would look bad in their standards

Every week there’s a new body part that tiktok/corporations think needs fixing. I didn’t even know what hip dips were until I saw a video on “exercises to remove hip dips!” and started feeling insecure 🫤Every time I’m in public, I compare myself to other bodies: wide hips, flat stomachs (mine isn’t even bad, it’s the closest you can get to having a flat stomach without intense exercise or being at an unhealthy weight), perfect and shiny skin, full lashes, big breasts and butts, etc.; it’s a huge problem. I reckon I’m not the only girl struggling with her self esteem because of these beauty trends. I just wish social media could leave our bodies alone, we weren’t made to be changed :(
tbh I think the difference between aegyosal and eyebags is that the former is the little band of fat directly under your eyes/tear duct area, whereas the latter is overall a much larger area. I have naturally quite noticeable "aegyosal" but the rest of my under eyes aren't particularly swollen or dark (thankfully!!) I know that to the average westerner there isn't a difference and most would like any perceived puffiness gone, the same way I think of really protruding ears as a "defect" (I know several people who've had them pinned back) it's nice to know that something considered ugly in one part of the world can be considered beautiful somewhere else.

As someone who's always had protruding ears and was kinda bullied for it growing up, that made me both happy and sad to see. My mom had hers stitched back when she was a teenager, but I'm glad I never did. I started liking mine in my twenties.

The calf neurectomy thing is so strange to me, because it looks terrible on me 😂 but I guess it would look better on someone who is overall thin (I am "curvy," not plus-sized but big hips/boobs). I know because I broke one of legs a couple months ago and couldn't use that calf, so that leg is literally giving "chopstick leg" and it's made me very self conscious while I'm trying to build the muscle back 😂 but I guess I can feel happy knowing my right leg is attractive in China 😂
