I couldn't have said it better myself... absolutely adore my 981 GT4. It's a keeper. It's to be driven and enjoyed. I couldn't care less about its worth in selling on... it's not going to happen. I honestly feel I have something very special that is unlikely to be repeated.

Seen one in Fareham about 4 times now and every time I've seen it, the driver has been hooning it around. Sounds sensational.
Love the unadulterated sound of the 1st gen GT4, and they drive sublime, only hampered by the long gearing. Magnificent cars!
Sound is clear, maybe a bit harsh on higher vocal frequency but that’s being critical.
Porsche week arrived at the right time- I picked up mine yesterday ☺ No GT4 though- I've had to make do with the 981S. It's a hard life...

As for the review, very well done! As someone with 20+ years of high performance driving and racing experience, and being longtime car enthusiast that’s driven everything from 60s sports cars to the latest HyperCars and everything in between, I find myself much aligned with your take on cars. Audio is good bud, Your cotent has come along way and it's been great to see it develop... Would love to see a Ford Falcon be it Oz or US appear on the channel.

Nice production quality on your credit cards. I like the 80's/RadWood kinda vibes.
981 GT4 all the way over the 718 version. I've done a GIAC tune and Cup Sport N2's on mine, so performance is very equal, plus you get that great sound missing in the new one with it's particulate filters, stop-start function, cylinder deactivation and other unwanted complications. The 3.8 is a rock solid engine and a big reason Porsche stuck with it in the new 718 GT4 Clubsport over the 4.0 in the current road car.

I own a 718GT4 and a Cayman 981S. I've also driven my Porsche Club friend's 981GT4. My 718GT4 was bought new and I'm trying to keep it at about 3000 miles/year. I drive a lot so the 981S is the one I drive about 12,000 miles a year and take to the track. People who say the flat-6 718's are inferior in sound are flat-out wrong. Maybe because my 718 is in the USA and doesn't have the particulate filter innards (does have the cans) and possibly sounds better than the Euro-spec cars? But the sound of the 718GT4 is truly epic and I would say deeper than the 981 series. Funny how disinformation is spread. The 718 series in general is better sorted and feel lighter/smaller than the 981 series which can feel a little "floaty" in base trim without PASM (rented one through Turo). The only time the 718 series is inferior in any way to the 981 series is if you're contemplating a 718GTS 4-cyl (go for the 718 4.0 or 981GTS), or base 718 (go for a 981S for the same money). 718S's absolutely blow past me on the straights at Sebring and show how much faster they are than my 981S. Plus the flat-4 guys all have tunes which give them a huge horsepower gain which non-turbo cars can't achieve. I prefer the sound/feel of the flat-6s, but if you're serious to achieve low lap times, the flat-4 is the way to go.

I’ve got a 991.2 GT3 (man) which is just too manic/license-losing, to drive too often. I have therefore kept my old 997.1 C4S (which is a pretty perfect example). But I’m increasingly tempted to chop-in the 997 for a 2016 GT4.
The question is, is the GT4 “more of the same” relative to the GT3, or will it be more fun at ‘closer to legal’ speeds?
Neither of these cars are used for any purpose, other than for the thrill of driving. Appreciate your help, and of course, value your opinion.

I noticed the in-cabin audio was high quality before you brought it up.
New audio sounds more compressed - sounds nicer on the surface, but is perhaps a bit wearing over time.

I found the 981 Cayman a bit dull compared to my 996.1 GT3 Club Sport. Fantastic car, but just a bit too sensible / civilised for me.
Last time I viewed Cars it was a 911-996 Porsche. And Lightning McQueen was very much NOT a European car.
A sharkworks manifold !! and a common mod "short final drive" , well no such think as a sharkworks manifold, and I don't know of a UK car with a short final drive.

I have heard of one or two UK cars with different final drive, but they are rare
This is by far one of the best modern Porsches with a real NA engine without PPF or bolt on blowers to suck out the fun from the engine. I pick this poor man's Porsche over any of the rich man's Porsche 91, bar the GT3.
The cayman 981 in base form or GT4 seems really appealing to me!
I reckon the S is spot on- the base car is good but the 3.4 has a nicer tone and a good chunk more performance, while the GTS/GT4 models are just a bit harsh (and expensive!).
@@ApothecaryTerry ´Probalby true yes, but because of the lower performance your ring the car out more :) and as bad as it sounds the GT4 at least in germany is close under release money around 80k € ish, maybe 75k
@@Taranisify To be honest I like the engine note best around 3-5k RPM (lovely gargle as it hits about 3k) so I don't feel the need to push it much- can't say for sure yet, I only bought it yesterday! 300 miles so far...
It also cost me half as much as the cheapest GT4 in the UK, no way I could afford that (they're >£65k here).
To be fair they're different cars- I bought my S as a daily driver whereas a GT4 only works as a 2nd car. For that purpose if someone has the money I totally get it though, the GT4 would be awesome on track.

@@Taranisify I work in IT but I also rent out my 2nd bedroom which gives me a nice extra chunk of income.
If I was sensible I'd have put the money into my mortgage, but petrol sports cars aren't going to be an option for much longer so while I'm single and I can (just about) afford it I thought why not ☺ Having just sold an incredibly good hybrid (Lexus GS450h Mk4...I can't describe just how awesome that car is), I'm totally looking forward to the future of cars but now was the time to enjoy the past and make some loud noises!
So whats the cost of changing final drive?... Btw that is a great shirt to end the series!

I spoke to Porsche about a 718 GT4 just before they came out, wouldn’t sell me one, bought a 981 GT4 for sensible money, so completely agree with you!!

Sparky Yes and I didn’t have a history of buying from them, they asked me to write a letter giving justification of why I should have an allocation but said it was unlikely I’d get one. This was Dec last year, they later offered me a registered one for £115k...I’m just great full I paid £70k for a clubsport pack 981 GT4 which is still worth it!

James; love your work, but please: Porsch-uh. The e on the end of German words is pronounced. No, I'm not German but I lived in Germany once, a long time ago, and speak a bit of the lingo. After all, if a German spoke to you in English and mispronounced 'Featherstonehaugh' or 'Cholmondeley', you'd put them straight, nicht wahr?
As for the GT vier, gosh I'd love one. But my 119,000 mile, 15 year-old E90 325 is warm/cool and dry, reliable except for when it's left outside for long periods during, say, a pandemic lockdown and still a joy to drive. Vielen dank, BMW, und gute fahrt!
