Oddly enough, me first experience with a proper meditative state some 5 years ago was more akin to sitting out. I use to walk in the forest at night with the dog, every night around 1am and on this particular night I'd been having a very stressful time in life for the months prior. As we were walking somet told me to just sit down and close me eyes. As I did, I instantly went quiet from the stress, the racing thought, had imagery flashing across me mind asif I was processing n then calmness like me mind was peacefully floating in the dark.
Since then I've learned getting to a meditative state such as that isnt so easy and I assume at that time it happened so easily because it was so needed. It did however make for a significant piece of a new journey in life that is now apart of every day life ✌️

I practice Viapassana techniques, which are a sort of Westernized version of Vajrayana meditation. This video was fascinating, thank you. You're quite right of course: there's no agreed definition of meditation and Eastern traditions like Vajrayana also include moving meditation styles. In their case a walking meditation, so a bit different to berserker techniques, but a similar idea. And, of course Eastern techniques include their own versions of yoga, and things like Tai Chi. And I have to say I think it would be very surprising if Norse religion didn't include some sort of meditation practice - as others here have already noted.

Meditation is simply a process that once learned can get the brain into a state receptive to a “consciousness state” we generally are not aware of because we are too busy with the material world.
Certainly any pagan explorer should experiment to find what works for them. I use sitting meditation aided with “flowers” and don’t always think on pagan topics.
A caveat: the cosmological view as interpreted from the remaining sagas of the Norse Pagan is Fate. This can cause problems if we understand this notion of Fate as humans ultimately having no freewill. Any approach to an old spirituality that is piecemeal at best, should be framed within our 21st century sensibilities.
Otherwise, thank you for a new project we can enjoy following along with you. Good luck.

Odin changing shapes reminds me of "borrowing" in the Discworld and Granny Weatherwax lying in her bed with her sign that says, "I ATE'NT DEAD".
Terry Pratchett really got that combination of germanic and celtic/breton culture and mythology exactly correct when writing about the people of the Ramtops.
Edit (after finishing the video): I'm speaking entirely anecdotally, obviously, but I think it's actually easier to reach a meditative state during repetitive and/or physical activity for most people. The "runner's high" and the "zone" achieved by other athletes are probably the most well-known examples of this, but any factory worker can tell you that these states are pretty easy to achieve, compared to trying to sit still and quiet the mind.

I used to get to a total flow and "thoughtless" mind when juggling. It was wonderful! And way more effective than any other meditation I have done. I do drumming and joik though, but that puts me into trance and journeys....I can imagine that with another focus and intention it could also become meditation...And dance ; I think improvisational dancing is also very meditative, so agree totally with you that for most of us doing something physical that is ( mostly, but not necessarily ) repetitive, is great meditation. Walking in a forest, sitting by the river, drawing and laying on the ground watching the sky and clouds does it for me too...Thanks for reminding, it's slowly getting warm enough for it, and I really need it asap, been very hard winter for me this year...my mind ( and body ) need rest...

@@Esti-xg7tg I was never able to do it while juggling, but I always thought that if I practiced enough to make it second nature it would be good for it.
What really made me think of it was how easily I slip into a state of no mind while hunting. Walking through the woods in the dead of winter, focusing on listening and seeing, really helps with the meditative state for me.

I think meditation differs according to people's interests, needs at the time, cultural experiences, and personal preferences. People are individuals and will not necessarily do the same exact processes per each practice, meditation, or experience. I can be quite energetic as well, so I completely agree, there are different ways to meditate along with movement. Although I was first taught the classical form of yoga, Hatha, I must say I enjoy Vinyasa yoga or flow yoga, when it comes to practice because it's faster in pace and allows more creativity in my opinion. I do meditate in stillness too but everything in moderation. Most of my educational experiences are of Eastern models of meditation but being from where I was born in the West, walking along, doing activities, and meditating in nature comes naturally. I think in Japan it may be called Shinrin Yoku or forest bathing. I will visit the links and see other ways that meditation may be experienced. I try to avoid constrictive practices in general. As usual, magnificent content. Thanks and take care!

For me, meditation is the practice of removing myself from the here and now and putting myself into an altered state. Hopefully, I have the discipline to ride that state, not always.
I typically combine it with breathwork. I have gone Utiseta for 4 days/nights, no food, and about 2-3 shots of water every day. Not the best experience for me lol. I will go again, but I've learned from the last experience to change my approach. The reason I bring this up is that not one system works for every single person, and adaptation is sometimes required.

Dr. K. Said it best I think. Meditation is not something you do. It’s a state of mind. It’s like sleeping. You don’t do sleep. You are in a state of sleep. What we call meditation is an activity where we try to make ourselves most favorable to get to that state. Just like sleeping. We go to bed, turn off the lights, get our minds calm enough, so that our body and mind can reach the state of sleep. We do the same thing with the state of meditation. We take a certain position, we try to calm the mind, or focus the mind, so we get hopefully reach the state of meditation

@Siegfried5846 With respect, I doubt that you are Dr. K’s doctor. So you probably didn’t properly diagnose him. So calling him a narcissist is most likely you using a current buzzword. I know it’s popular at the moment to call everyone you don’t like a narcissist. It’s more likely you just don’t like some aspects of the guy. That’s okay. From what I’ve seen, he doesn’t seem to have many traits of a narcissist. I’m personally not some groupie, but I do like many of the ideas that Dr. K’s channel is conveying. Having said all this, even the worst person on the planet has some good ideas. So I would recommend not throwing away the baby with the bath water. An idea can be good, even if you don’t like someone. And in this instant, Dr. K seems to be pretty well informed when it comes to meditation. Both when it comes to knowledge and practice. And even if he just took the idea straight from a book, I’m trying to present an idea here, so we can have a talk about the subject matter. It would be nice if you can respond to the idea, instead of attacking someone ad hominem. Because that doesn’t help a conversation in good faith.

There's always a gap or pause of no thought in between a new thought arising and an old one, mediation is the practice of extending that gap. Focusing on the breath is one method of clearing the mind, when your thoughts start to drift, you can return to your breathe. Try not to cling to any intrusive thoughts, and return to your breath as soon as you realize you are.

And for the idiots regarding meditation in western tradition, have a hard look at the Gundestrup Caldron. Cernunnos looks an awful lot like in the Pashupati seal. Circling back to Cernunnos I'm not quite sure if he is depicting the civilization of the wild aspect of man/man the animal, or perhaps taming what would be called Kundalini. I don't know as much about the Norse traditions, hence why I watch your channel but I seem to recall one video vaguely. I will have to search for it again. I don't really have a set definition of what meditation is. But prayer is a type of meditation, even Christian prayer. What are commonly called divination tools (tarot, oracle decks, bones, runes, crystal balls, etc) are also meditation tools, and it might make more sense to the non-religiously inclined to think of them that way instead. Meditation can be accomplished through sitting and breathing techniques, walking, riding in a vehicle, working out, riding an animal - not so good to do it while driving but it can be done, especially if you're familiar with the route you're taking.
I get frustrated with this idea that clearing one's mind is the "true" form of meditation because that's only one type of meditation. And it doesn't work that well for people who have ADHD, brain damage, and/or people with a history of trauma. That style of meditation CAN be incredibly helpful and life changing for people with one or more of those, but it can also leave us feeling like we're fundamentally broken because we can't do it. As such, I prefer a form of meditation where I don't try to control my thoughts at all. Whatever I think about, I follow that tangent until it's run its course, and then move on to the next. This means that sometimes I'll be talking to myself and suddenly stop, and move onto a completely unrelated thought. But if some idea or thought or concept keeps coming up, I know that I need to examine that more thoroughly, to step out of meditation and into introspection.
But, most westerners, especially those of my generation (millennials) and younger are so wrapped around the axel that "only the far eastern cultures ever developed meditation and if it's not that style of meditation then it's bogus".... It's just really frustrating. Especially when those same people also get wrapped around the axel about cultural appropriation (which I do believe is real and a problem). Meaning something like the people who say that non-Jewish pagans can't use mermaid mythology, but also insist upon defining everything about the body/spirit in terms of chakras 🤦 like ....guys, you say cultural appropriation is bad, but also insist that the only way to do meditation is through cultural appropriation?? O.o Maybe think that shit through a bit more.
Anyway, every single culture today, and likely every single culture throughout history, has(had) a form of meditation. Only those who insist that the far eastern traditions of meditation are the only forms thereof have issues wrapping their heads around this idea
