I feel like one of the reasons turrets shut off when knocked over is to prevent possible damage. The arms of the turret might not be powerful enough to support the weight of the turret, so one side wouldn't open when the turret activates, potentially causing the turret to shoot through its shell
Yeah, since the turrets need to be reassembled for multiple test subjects the turret is probably programmed to fake shutdown so the test subject doesn’t cause further damage.
As part of turret relocation program, whenever possible, kindly place upright turrets facing walls or unused areas of test chambers. Remember, the cute little turret you save might be your own. Thank you.
I'd do neither, and do what Papyrus did in his playthrough of portal by "putting them in time out" and putting them in a corner so that they can't fire on anyone, but stays active.
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees! the only other thing I think you should have mentioned is how all the turrets after portal 2, the franken turrets and some defective ones, all live at apature now, in peace....well except the ones atlas and P-Body blow up...
My first playthrough of Portal, it went completely over my head that the "military androids" GLaDOS was referring to were the turrets. The whole time I thought she was saying the test chamber was designed to be DONE by military androids and that Chell would be assuming the position of one. The implication I gathered from that was that the turrets were designed purely for military-grade live-fire testing.
One thing you seem to forget to mention is the turrets in Portal are actually quite similar to the turrets in Half-Life 2. They look for targets the same way, they shoot the same way and when knocked down, they fire berserkly and then shut down. There are other elements in the Aperture test chambers that bares resemblances to the tech seen in the Half-Life games. One guy made a theory that Aperture may have made a collaboration with the alien race in Half-Life, Combine, the ones behind most of the tech in that game. Or, most likely, Combine had ripped off Aperture's tech and adopted a lot of Aperture's tech into their own, similar to one part that happens in Aperture Desk Job, and they would even get a lot of ideas from them like uploading brain data into a computer, which would explain GlaDOs' role in keeping them away from the facility.

3:11 i have a feeling that old voice could of been the defective turret voice. Infact the defective turrets could be the first version of the turret. The reason why it has no shell or no bullets (maybe no vision) is because aperture stopped making those parts for the turret and focused on the new ones.
It's quite easy to argue that all the cores in portal were originally human and Turrets are a form of cores so could quite easily all be humans. That thought is terrifying and because this game is written by the same people as Half Life 2, one of the darkest games, I'm willing to believe it.
5:37 - Just to answer your question, I enjoy passing through tests and challenge myself to never knock down a single turret. Not only is it actually managable, but it's also fun! I just wish there was some form of achievement for doing so. Would have been pretty neat.

i never understood as to why GLaDOS would put a test subject into the risk of dying just to make a test harder, why wouldn't she make all tests equally as hard but also safe so she can re-use the test subject for more testing.

Are we going to ignore the fact that they are powered by a mini fusion reactor? Overall the version we see in Portal 2 is the best in my opinion, in how neatly and somewhat practicality everything was arranged inside of them, with the bullet hopper at the top, the cup-personality core-targeting system, and under that the reactor, all those in packed in a white cell the sides of which open to reveal 2 smg's and the last thing you hear before you die is their' adorable voice. The original Portal model has a lot less detail in it, while I think that the one in the aperture investment opportunities was a joke and isn't really meant to be Canon, as funny as '' we fire the WHOLE bullet! I think that specifically was canon, as Chell is able to survive multiple shots so spring launched bullets make sense, they might use the whole bullet because they already manufacture bullets for other reasons.
What if the turret stuck in the tube that Wheatley tries to shoo off, had a defect, being that the empathy resistance chip was absent and the empathy chip took over so it wouldn’t shoot Chell if she decided to pick it up
Probably I will hit the turret, even if I will cry a little, because they have a nice voice and are different from other AI driven weapons from other games.

One thing I am curious about, does anyone know if the turrets have an organic sentience like GLaDOS or is it a manufactured personality and sentience? I mean, Wheatley does say that they have a simulated sort of pain, but I would imagine that’s what he and GLaDOS have as well since they don’t have skin like humans, even if GLaDOS was human at one point. GLaDOS implies at points that almost _everything_ in the facility is sentient and alive, but I’m curious how much that holds true. Does anyone know? Thank you to anyone who does and can tell me ^v^
