  • a look at the new dapol large prairie tank and compare it to the hornby one.
Both in late crest lined livery. a direct comparison can be made.
both have good and bad bits. you decide which is better.

There is pip on top of the rear pony truck causing the stalling. Two approaches appear to be removing the pip or increasing depth of the slots for the (sprung) pony truck wheels by 1mm. There are yputube videos on the former (SAMS TRAINS) and the latter.

Both are beautiful locomotives. If the Dapol is quitting on you then I would have to rate it a second. Thanks for sharing. Dave

Can I ask which decoder did you use? I have the LAISSDCC in my Hornby one but really want a sound decoder. Will a TSS work?

Great comparison. Looking at the way they run it looks like a win for Hornby. The chimney looks better on the Dapol. Hornby wins in other areas. I have the older Hornby version which weighs a ton and runs superbly but is less detailed. Thanks for showing. Regards Paul.

Is the Hornby version new tooling, or a re-hash of the old Airfix model it acquired some years ago, that actually dates back to the early 1980’s, and is now over 40 years old?
Hornby still release “new” models that are in fact 50 year old Triang tooling’s from the 1970’s, albeit with new metal wheels. Same with old LIMA models from the 1980/90’s, although with improved Ringfield motors. As for 2022, have released “new” Metro-Cammel Mk3 coaches that are in fact repainted Oxford models, having acquired the firm in 2021. Expect Oxford’s LNER J35 to now treble in price due to the shear greed on the part of Hornby.
The DTI’s M&MC should have blocked the acquisition of Oxford Models as not in the public interest, especially after Hornby had already forced DJM Models out of business through replication. Now trying the same with Rapido Trains…

The old tooling Hornby version runs much better with sprung centre drivers!

Thanks for sharing, I have the Dapol model in GWR livery and it works good now... I had the same problem as you as on my first dapol model, it kept stalling on track work where other locos did not! Luckily I got a replacement and so far so good! Maybe you can get a replacement as something isn't right.
    P.S.
Also which backscene are you using? as it looks great and it would be perfectly fitting on my layout. Many thanks!

That Dapol one has a major issue doesn’t it, almost like the front and rear pony trucks are lifting the driving wheels up. The original Bachmann Blue A1 had the same issues and they asked for those back but never rectified it until almost 12 months later.

Hi, Interesting video ! The Dapol looks a bit more 'detailed and polished'. But the Dapol even at 120 gr heavier loses from the Hornby - surprisingly - on your load test. Both engines don't have the right gearing and the motors are what they are - cheap red chinese - just good enough. I have the Hornby and it took me a lot of time and sweat to get it running smoothly for front and rear pony's are of a poor fixation design and had to be adjusted plus in-depth cleaning of the gearbox and wipe the over-oiling. Quality Control is ZERO both Hornby and Dapol. I put a TTS decoder inside and it runs just ok now - but overall it's a disappointment. To compare I bought a analog TRIX freight train set all in: track, power, 2-6-0 Tank engine + 3 goods wagons for 89€ ( !!) and the engine, an absolute little beauty, runs like a Swiss watch. The precise (German ) design and build quality are nothing to compare.
It is what it is...beautiful engines but 'just' good enough and RTR ( out of the box ) now stands for Ready To Repair. Disappointing !
Thanks for sharing and success with the 'Prairies' ! Cheers

The Dapol one is so much better than the Hornby one. First f all most of the dapol one is made of metal making it very heavy. Dapols detailing is exquisite with little oil pots detailed on the slide bars above the cross heads. The dapol one had a lot of time in the making and that is more than shown in the fantastic detail present. I give the Dapol 10/10 and the Hornby 5/10

Both very nice, but I do want to eat so I think I’ll go with the old hornby large prairie.

    I have both models.
Hornby been back to them twice for poor running and stalling then no pulling power and cutting out on DCC. Now back and worse than ever.....older Hornby version much better still!!
Dapol one needed pickups adjusting to make it run smoothly on DCC though it was good on DC
