Don’t feel guilty Bill., you give us hours &Hours of your time putting these clips together, giving us hours of entertainment. Keep up the great work
Morning Bill. Every gift you receive is well deserved as your channel is giving us free information on how to fix old model trains 👍🏻 I’m not modelling anymore but I love watching you solve running issues with theses iconic trains 🤩
Love it Bill don't feel guilty. you my friend have helped many of us gain the confidence to have a go at servicing our old models!
I think that's the longest train I've ever seen on your layout
Nice job
Nick Australia
As the story goes, Bill's circlip pliers have been in his shed for fourteen years, waiting for their master to return.
Probably longer than that actually
More like 35 years.
Good videos, that 47 is a 1970s chassis and motor with a newer body as ScotRail not made by Hornby untill the 1990s
Another wonderful video just love these restorations
Loving these videos!
good info as always
I agree with everyone else. It's a gift. Accept it as such. Your channel has helped so many including me. I enjoy watching your videos. They are enjoyable and educational. Please keep delivering more.
You need some Scotrail mk 1 coaches to run with it. I have done my own with the help of a well known motor shop, that sells rattle cans. Got the transfers from Fox transfers, and mad a rake of 8 coaches.
Love the Scotrail 47's i have got 8 so far
Hoping the get the full set
I've got an unbranded Scotrail 47 with network southeast branding on it.
you're right about those "silver seal" motors Bill they do have a sound all of their own and do tend to be noisy, for all that they are pretty bulletproof from a reliability & lifespan point of view, they'll out last a lot of the modern stuff
Hummm A Silver Seal motor? I am going to say that it is an Old chassis with a more upto date (ish) body on it. The partly updated body and livery post date the chassis by a fair few years....
I think you're probably right and it would explain the bad fit.
Wondering if an airbrush will turn up in the post!
Well done bill, looking good, I do like the 47 pulling that rake of blue coaches, I've been working on a few of my son-in-law old desiels a 1980s hst125, and a old 25, 37 etc and I've been using some tooth picks, they look like mini bottle brushes to clean the holes where the brushes go ! Probably not necessary as wd40 blasts it out but that's my way. I pick up a lot of tips watching you, your attention to problem solving is amazing, keep up the good work, see you on the next one Eddy xx
Nice work Bill the scotrail livery looks very smart on that loco, scotrail coaches next?
I'll be watching ebay for a rake of 3 yes.
I had that model but mine had the normal ringfield motor not the silverside as the one you had in it. Good runner 🏃♂️ throu
Should have meant silver seal
Hi Keith.
Yup! I don't think silverside of beef would have been much good as a motor. I suppose it could have been used as a 'beef pancake' motor for tea-time running. 😂😂😂
Paul.
Now go to Oxford Rail and get a couple of MK3 Scotrail coaches :)
Hi Bill love watching you fixing the locos, I have 2 class 25 both none runners. Was wondering if I could send them to you to see if you could fix the us I have a class 50 Lima tha needs looking at . I'm not very good with the wiring.
Regards Graham
You'd need to email me details. Address in the About tab on my channel. But there is a waiting list I'm afraid.
Nice one Bill, The only thing wrong with these old Hornby 47s is the body sits a little too high..
I have a green Hornby 47 called Mammoth which I have managed to lower slightly by carefully cutting a small amount of the plastic bogie frames. The Scotrail livery is very smart , I have a Lima 47 in this livery.
I’ve fitted my Greyfriars Bobby with TTS sound. It runs well with the original 3 pole motor.
👍👍👍
I have a theory tools move around by themselves.
Just like scissors, pens and socks....
I've got a Hornby blue and grey Livery HST but the power car uses full power but doesn't go like a 125
Hi Bill, did I spot a missing weight from 'Greyfriar's Bobby' or were they not fitted to the earlier ringfield motored models ? The reason that the body may not fit correctly is that it is fitted to an earlier chassis. According to Ramsey's Guide the Hornby Greyfriars's Bobby dates from 1987/1988 whilst the earlier type of ringfield motor is from 1975 to 1978. Also I have the 1985 model of Class 47 'Rail Riders' which at that date has plastic moulded couplings not the metal ones as on your model. The weight in the earlier model may also not fit the newer body. Thanks for your most enjoyable videos.
Robert, the 'Silver Seal' motor was fitted in a cast metal chassis and so did not need a weight. The two bogie frames were different, and from a much more rigid plastic than later used by Hornby. I think that only green Class 47s bodies were fitted to the metal chassis (some called 'Mammoth', although these were still in the range after the change to plastic chassis).
I have a similar problem to Bill, in that I have a detailed 47 body on a Silver Seal chassis, and the ends don't fit properly. Part of the problem is that the buffers have been replaced with sprung brass, which have a nut protruding behind. I hadn't thought to look at the cab interior fouling the windows!
I have a feeling there are some body dimensional differences to suit the two different chassis, but I have not yet identfied them.
Bill I have a hornby class 47. 47120 and I've had it for well over 20 years. Just lately after building a layout for my son to run trains on I've noticed that is becoming slower and starting to smell brunt out motor smell. Would a decent service and new brushes ect bring up back to life??
More than likely yes.
Won't necessarily need new brushes, but certainly sounds like an oily commutator. I have a couple of Class 25s with a similar problem (accompanied by smoke!), but I haven't had a chance to open them up since I started watching Bill's channel. (My servicing queue is as long as Bill's!) If you haven't already serviced it, stop running it until you have time to open it up.
I have a a4 dcc fitted its is lurching at slow speed but buy speed step 28 or higher its smooths out would u be have to look it at it I believe its a 2018 super detail with the dual tender from the one to one collection so would be a cool one to do a video on
Just need a DVT Bill for push pull operation 👍
Or a Bachmann DBSO, for £120!
@@roberthill6216 only £99 on ebay 😂
I have a silver seal motor on my R061 Black five and the caps are duff so the motor is certainly not bullet proof. I will need to replace it.
Peters Spares should be able to supply replacement caps. They are easily lost during servicing -- lost for ever after being propelled across the room by the brush spring (unless you are careful!)
I have an airbrush without the compressor, and you're welcome to it. Let me know if it's of any interest?
Actually it's the compressor that's done and needs replaced my actual airbrush is probably OK.
Hi Bill Wow what a grrr8 gift from chuddles haha ,, so does that 47 have on it
grayforey on booby ? on the side of it ?
Q. Do all the ringfield/pancake motors have that small tiny little washer that goes in between the outer case and the centre shaft on where the commutator is. Ive pulled probly 15 to 20 of these apart and only around 4 or 5 have the plastic washers.
Also with a double ender loco like these and others , what is the best way to run them ie motor end 1st or the pickup end first ,, or maybe whatever is the best preforming end i would suppose.
Keep up the gr8 videos there bill.
Cheers m8 from John in Australia.
The Silver Seal Hornby Ringfield has a very thin soft washer, The Airfix, Mainline and Replica ringfield/pancake motors have tiny plastic washers. I've always run diesels with the motor bogie at the rear it gives better traction. I've seen my 37 rear bogie derail when pulling a load if run motor bogie first.
Nothing wrong with the engine, they just can’t find a driver since the takeover.
