The one episode that stands out to me where it shows they've done their homework is the one centered on tourettes syndrome. While they feature some characters that exhibit the cliche of involuntarily shouting obscenities, they demonstrate the variety of behavioral tics tourettes can form in people. It's probably one of few instances South Park is sympathetic to a group of people and rip on people like Cartman who use the condition as an excuse to away with something.
My hubby was diagnosed as having ADHD at the age of 53. A year later Autism. School was never a good experience but luckily now he is able to see just how smart he really is.
People who are autistic are actually more intelligent than the average person. They have more neurons than the average person, there are so many autistic savants & it's because of the increased amount of neurons, so I've read.
@@dominoreigns8542 Romanticization of autism and placing autistic people on a pedestal saying they're somehow intellectually superior really disregards the difficulties many autistic people face. Autism should not be seen as a cool superpower nor as a terrible curse, it's just who we are and we face challenges just as Neurotypical people do, they just happen to be different challenges.
I have actually had a fecal transplant. I have an autoimmune disease called ulcerative colitis, so my intestine was already really sick. Then I got a c diff infection and was hospitalized because I was so ill. They tried multiple antibiotics and nothing was getting rid of the infection. The last option was a fecal transplant, and I was so horribly sick that I was willing to try anything. I had been sick for 3 months. Seriously the next day after the fecal transplant I felt a million times better! My body needed that good bacteria. I know the idea of it sounds gross, but it was so helpful to me and I am a huge believer in fecal transplants!
That sounds horrible , ulcerative colitis is a b... that almost took my mom. She was getting weaker and weaker, thinner and thinner,it was terrifying to watch. Can't imagine getting c.diff on top of it. Fecal flora transplant was the best thing that ever happened to her - we've had to go to private healthcare for it though and I can't believe "eww, gross" is still a reason for politicians not to approve coverage for medical procedures. Glad you got better!
I just thought it was a South Park bit and not a real procedure, but hey, whatever it takes to heal - when it comes to grossness or staying alive and healthy, a fecal transplant isn't even close to the limit of what I would be willing to do.

I had head lice when I was 14. It was terrible. I still remember the non-stop itching. It took days but daily washing of anti-lice shampoo(for dogs) and using a lice comb finally rid me of the infestation. (I was too ashamed tell my parents so I used the dogs' shampoo)
I'm always afraid of getting lice. I love my hair, but I totally can not live with a living bugs crawling through my hair. Would 100% shave it. I have no patience for other long treatments.
I remember having headlice as well. The lice shampoo didn't work, but my family was thinking of shaving my head off until I searched on youtube what to use for thick hair and found out that you can use conditioner and the lice comb. Worked wonders and it was finally gone.
You don't actually swallow poop. It's processed to remove all the unwanted let's say fecal matter to have only the bacteria you want the patient to have.
It's likely similar to prebiotic capsules, where you take them before food (to avoid there being much acid in the tummy) so the capsule dissolves in the small intestine and gets absorbed there and later, in the large intestine. Definitely one of the medications where you ask the prescribing doctor, "Do I take this with food or on an empty stomach?" "Is there any type of food that helps it absorb better? Learned to ask that, the hard way, at 13 🤢 (acne med, upside down, just ate, sudden new acid reflux; have _before_ a meal!)

That you played the ADD clip made me so happy. I've watched south park since it aired in 1998 and this has been my hands down favorite moment of the series.
Medicine for ADHD can be extremely helpful for some kids. Ritalin changed my nephew's entire life for the better, and I am so grateful that it did. That said, not all kids with ADHD fare well on medicine. Mine sure didn't. When the meds made my twins into little zombies, I approached the issues from a dietary and therapy standpoint, and it helped quite a lot. Shout out to all my boys - they're all doing wonderfully as adults today!
Ritalin helped me a lot up through eighth grade. In high school the decision was made that I no longer needed it. But as a little kid, my behavior with it vs. without it was night and day.

I legit cried because of the head lice story because I felt so bad for the lice. But then my pets got lice and I felt like a godess when I saw the corpses of the lice fall off their fur because of the treatment. So it's all about perspective :)

10:41 as someone with ADHD, I can confirm this to be 100% on the dot true. We're constantly thinking 24/7, our minds are racing all the time even at night if your thoughts don't slow down, your body and mind won't relax quick enough to be on a proper sleep schedule sometimes, that's why for most people with ADHD it's important to have medication that'll calm you down that way you can go to bed at a proper time and also focus more during the day on said medication.
I had hemorrhoids once, and got the rubberband treatment. Apparently they didn't do it correctly and after going home I ended up in the fetal position, crying my eyes out from the excruciating pain. I was ready to call an ambulance as the pain was so bad, like I'd rather have severe toothache in all my teeth then experience that again. Didn't have to as the band come out during a toilet visit.
I watched the Anime scene yesterday where the ninja star got stuck in Butter's eye and as soon as they tried to pull it out, I screamed at the TV "Dr. Mike would say leave it in until you get to the hospital!" 😂
Don’t forget to get children sleep studies prior to prescribing ADHD medications! Children who don’t get proper sleep will be agitated and can have paradoxical symptoms when tired - so they will be hyperactive and inattentive. Hope this helps 😊
@@catherineostmann8055 I'm glad you got the correct diagnosis and you are managing your condition, I was just stating a newly implemented practice. To explain it a bit further - like any science, medicine evolves with research, discovery, and newly implemented guidelines. Our ability to diagnose has definitely improved over the years, but we found that a lot of kiddos were getting misdiagnosed with ADHD and as a result, pediatricians were overprescribing ADHD medications. I'm just here to help, and I promise I'm really fun at parties :D
ADHD CAUSES lack of sleep; my dose was inadequate this year for several months (female reasons), and I didn't sleep for several months until my dosage of Concerta (methylphenidate) was increased. Now I'm sleeping well again, thanks to the stimulant medication. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but it's true!
When I was 12 years old, I had some serious behavioral issues and my parents-limited by their insurance-took me to some off-brand, dollar store "I got my medical degree from a cereal box" therapist who was throwing pills at any child he saw instead of doing the testing to properly diagnose people. My ADHD was diagosed as depression and I was prescribed Zoloft. Yes, they gave me a medication that is known to cause SERIOUS issues in children and guess what, it did. I ended up attempting suicide a month after I began taking it. I was very nearly successful, but it was the moment my parents decided to bite the bullet and took me out-of-network to another doctor who did the appropriate testing and diagnosed me as having ADHD and a non-verbal learning disability. He started me on Concerta (methylphenidate), the extended-release tablets, while my mom fought hard to get me an IEP to help with my learning in school. Over the course of a few months, I went from failing all of my classes to being a B student and my impulsivity, stealing, and other odd behaviors calmed right down. I can say with 1000% certainty that if my parents didn't step in and get me to a competent specialist, I would not be here today.
As someone who was put on zoloft while going through puberty, I can confirm that it fucks with your head, and should never be used in teens. I became more depressed, and had suicidal thoughts. Told my mom, but she didn't take me off of it. Let nurse and doctor know what was going on during an appointment a few months later because I was concerned. They didn't do anything to help me. Years later I'm still on that bullshit at max dose. Plan on weening myself off as soon as I move out of my parents' house. I fully believe my mom was punishing me because she's a narcissist who doesn't seem to like having a daughter with autism. I'll be 20 when I finally get away from her and can fully make decisions regarding my medical care. As it stands right now, she only allows me to schedule my appointments, fill out paper work regarding/consenting to what type of care I need whether it be at an out patient clinic or hospital (haven't been hospitalized since I was a baby though), and answering questions asked by a doctor or nurse about how I'm feeling, any health concerns I have, medical insurance information, and my medical history. Shortly after I graduated from high school, I had to go to a lawyer's office to sign paper work regarding medical POA, so if I ended up in a state where I was comatose and the doctors not being able to do anything to improve my condition, my parents can sign papers to have the hospital let me die. If I die, that's obviously bad news for everyone I know, but good news for people on organ transplant waiting lists if my organs haven't been damaged by what put me in the hospital or things that happened while in the hospital. Need bone marrow? My ghost has got ya. A new heart? All yours! Kidneys? Have at em! Liver? Just a few signatures and a trip to the OR and it's yours! Lungs? No problem! Of course, that's if I die with my organs intact. If they're damaged, infected, or beginning to decompose after death, they're useless.
Zoloft actually helped me for years as a teen and young adult! Went suicidal when taken off, but I developed an allergy to it plus gained over 100 pounds which is common. Now I'm 43 and doing very well on Buspar and Seroquel. Been on these for over 10 years. I have autism and borderline personality disorder. It's so important to get the right diagnosis and treatment for you.

10:50 Yep. And i had to deal with being unable to control myself for years before i was put on medications. Being able to replicate the feeling of normality helped me get off the meds and live much more normal life.
As someone who has been diagnosed with ADHD yelling sometimes does work. As an adult if I start slacking off I get PTSD flashbacks of my parents yelling and get right back to work.

@@suckit4669 It's very likely real, but I wouldn't call it a "disorder". It's a difference in prioritization algorithm. When something critical happens and you have to jump into action without thinking, the ADHD person will be faster. That's what they're evolved to do. When something uninteresting and non-critical "should be" done, the ADHD person will procrastinate. We're not orderly minds, able to follow a straight line easily. We're probing like an AI, looking for all possibilities, and acting toward or against them, like a very busy chess game that never ends. I highly doubt this represents 100% of the population. My ADHD has been with my life for so long. It's affected me forever and now that I am pushing 30 with no healthcare. The fact of all the misdiagnoses has ruined the perception of the disorder. Other countries give help for people like me and consider ADHD a job impairing disability and give people the support they need, but not here in the USA. My "ADHD" diagnosis as a kid was dead wrong, it was actually PTSD that went undiagnosed coupled with sustained physical and mental/emotional abuse and made it worse. The medication just made me dopey and I looked like a crack addict.

THANK YOU for explaining celiac disease! I've been living with in for the past ten years and it's so annoying when i have to explain it to people. Usually when i go out to eat I just say that I have a gluten allergy because it takes less time and energy than explaining what celiac is and not having them fully understand
We actually had to get a fecal transplant for our cat. We had testing done and his bacteria was totally out of whack. Had to take him off dry food and give him fecal capsules. He hasn't had diarrhea for 2 years and his energy shot way up.
I'm glad your cat feels better, I own 4 myself and I would be super sad if one of them would never feel better.

The way this was worded, sounds like he doesn't eat anything but fecal capsules! Lol! Poor kitty!

Doctor Mike you seem to understand ADHD more then any doctor i've been to. Even when sitting still out mind will be racing and that makes it hard to focus on one thing and you pinpointed that. Way to go!
I love how Matt and Trey actually do some research when it comes to medical jokes or episodes.
That’s me who asked for more South Park!😂 I didn’t think this day would come lol! Love you Dr. Mike!!

My hubby was diagnosed as having ADHD at the age of 53. A year later Autism. School was never a good experience but luckily now he is able to see just how smart he really is.
😌😌
People who are autistic are actually more intelligent than the average person. They have more neurons than the average person, there are so many autistic savants & it's because of the increased amount of neurons, so I've read.
@@dominoreigns8542 Romanticization of autism and placing autistic people on a pedestal saying they're somehow intellectually superior really disregards the difficulties many autistic people face. It's not some magical gift. I have a family member who's in his 30s and can hardly feed himself because his autism delayed his development so severely. Many autistic people have cognitive delays, and while a very very small minority have savant syndrome even they typically struggle with important everyday tasks.
@@kieleyevatt2232 l respect your opinion, but it doesn't negate the facts that there is so much people don't fully know about autism & that many people with autism are intelligent. I'm sorry you feel I was romanticizing autism, I understand the spectrum. We can agree to disagree, take care 😘
@@dominoreigns8542 you're wrong though. the phrase 'agree to disagree' doesn't apply when you're actually wrong and what you're saying is harmful. There are benefits to being Autistic yes, like having higher academic intelligence but there's also downsides as well such as lower emotional intelligence and as Kieley rightfully said, delayed development.
Lost my colon to C Diff. I wish I had the option for a fecal transplant.
You gotta love how casually the doctor talked about eating your poop pills 😂

It's likely similar to prebiotic capsules, where you take them before food (to avoid there being much acid in the tummy) so the capsule dissolves in the small intestine and gets absorbed there and later, in the large intestine.

To explain it a bit further - like any science, medicine evolves with research, discovery, and newly implemented guidelines.
4:00 why is this so funny😂 the wiener is flying😂
Huge kudos to your parents to stepping in, glad youre still here bud. Also gotta say as another IEP student, IEP's are life saving.

It's very likely real, but I wouldn't call it a "disorder".
It's probably a fraction, and that fraction has ADHD, for lack of a better term. There is a medical TV show that is on it's last season this year, which would be great for you to review next it is called Doc Martin, it's a British comedy drama, he was a vascular surgeon, but becomes a GP (family medicine Doctor same as you), the show is medically accurate, and to top it off it is hilarious.
My ADHD has been with my life for so long. It's affected me forever and now that I am pushing 30 with no healthcare. The fact of all the misdiagnoses has ruined the perception of the disorder. The best thing I'm good at is puns, but being punctual and quick all the time isn't going to take me very far.
