- Rabbi David Mivasair was a progressive Zionist for much of his life. More recently, he has committed himself to working towards the justice, equality and freedom of the Palestinian people. In this emotional and eye-opening conversation with Dr. Safiyyah Ally, he shares his journey with us, from his first time visiting Israel as a 19 year old and observing how Arabs were treated to his intensive engagement with Palestinians and support for people in Gaza. He shares how difficult it was for him to make that cognitive shift and rip off his mask, so to speak, and how hurtful it is to be considered persona non grata in the mainstream Jewish community. He feels the dominant Jewish institutions are locked into a defensive position, and he believes many Jewish people think similarly but are reluctant to speak out. He says much of what he does is informed by what he knows of the Holocaust and his understanding of his Jewish faith. He laments the dehumanization of Palestinians and says there's a propaganda machine trying to push a narrative with a campaign of misinformation and disinformation which people are increasingly starting to see through. His message to Jewish leaders? "Put the ethic before the ethnic."

I am not Jewish nor Muslim but thank you for this interview. Learning a great deal over the last few weeks about what really goes on in our world. Unfortunately, many of us have listened to MSM channels as if they were our classroom teachers. We have been too lazy to read about Palestinian/ Israeli history nor inform ourselves via a variety of media souces and so, we believed the propaganda. My eyes are now wide open and I thank you for this interview. My heart goes out to the Palestinian people. I sincerely hope this carnage and oppression stops. If it truely was just about Hamas, we would not be seeing atrocities occuring in West Bank, as there are no Hamas there. Thank you again.

I have read this verse many times, but I did not understand why God Almighty said: “Indeed, I know what you do not know.”
Now I understand what God meant: There will always be noble people who stand up for justice.

The point is, both Dr. Ally and Rabbi David are humanitarians who don't judge others' beliefs, but are willing and able to discuss differences of opinion and belief rationally and amicably in a non-judgemental way. This allows for a pathway to open towards understanding and tolerance and reduces the ignorance which can often lead to hatred and animosity caused by "fear of the unknown". Asalaam w aleikum.

Dear Rabbi, I feel so blessed to have come across this video as I've been torn over the conflicts in Palestine and Israel. I'm not a Jew or a Muslim - I'm a woman who was raised in the Roman Catholic but I'm not active but I'm someone who attempts to live by Christian values. I've always had friends who were Jews - in fact, my Mother and I befriended Mr and Mrs Trachtenberg who were Holocaust survivors and, I seemed to enjoy meeting and making friends with people of different religious, ethnic, socioeconomic and racial backgrounds. I find myself so troubled by the horrible conditions of the Palestinians but as a Mexican American Woman I'm only too familiar with discrimination and mass injustice to the Native Americans of whom I had a grandmother. I'd love to see Peace, Justice, Fairness and Economic Development which would include: an international port and airport! I pray that justice rules for everyone in Gaza and Israel. When someone support the Palestinian cause, you know he or she does it out of the goodness of their heart and a strong sense of empathy and justice. Because Palestinians have nothing to offer in return for their support except their gratitude and prayers. They got no money, no state, no influence. But when someone support Israel, especially when they are not Israelis themselves, it can always be traced back to money, lobbying, influence or the sheer fear of risking any potential retaliation.

Thank you for your insights. I am married to a Palestinian woman and we have been marching in the rallies and writing our politicians calling for a ceasefire. During this time we have noticed how some of our friends have shied away from wanting to even to acknoweldge our heartache over Gaza. But we choose the path you described. We are meeting and making friends at the rallies including many Jews who are bravely saying 'Never again, means never again for anyone' and growing our community of people who are seeking peace and justice in the Middle East. And thank you for explaining how some people can see the horror in front of them and still not have the capability to empathize. It still hurts but it helps to understand.

My ex brother in law is Jewish. I always enjoyed spending time with him and his family.
But one time, the conversation somehow was about the Israeli/Palestinian situation, where he said that the Palestinians are nothing but savages.
I changed the subject quickly but it gave me a twist in my stomach.

I had a Jewish friend who invited me to a gathering of her friends. Some of these people had just returned from a trip to Israel and spoke with such hate for Palestinians I was shocked. My friend was a liberal Jew and had never spoken Ill of the Palestinians. I began to look more closely at Israeli politics toward the Palestinians and saw the cruelty they faced and I could no longer supported Israel.
I have friends from Palestine. They are warm, hospitable and intelligent people. Political name calling has its purpose.
It is not the JEWS . There is no problem with them. It is what they call ( is ra el ) The Zionist state , they want to concur the world .

Thank you for this podcast. I have been horrified by genocide occurring to the Palestinians by the Netanyahu government and the lack of outrage from our government and fundamentalist so called Christians. I have some hope for righteous ness and fairness to Palestinian cause by the marches against this travesty by so many young people. I am hoping these same courageous young people will vote against those politicians who support Israel regardless of her blatant unfairness to the Palestinian people.

Thank you for your inspirational conversation, full of mutual respect. I try to follow Rabbi's advice and I will try better after this talk. My story is amazing in such point. I am Russian from Latvia, I have had a lot of Jewish friends in my school, i standed up against any kind of antisemitism and when I came to Israel for the first time I have had a very big sympathy towards Israelis and their safe heaven state. But meeting some Palestinians in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth, I was deeply shocked and sad. It was the beginning of my journey, as the host said. In 2019 I converted to Islam despite the fact that there were very few muslims in my country and the society is generally very Islamophobic. I do believe it was God's will. But there was also a "Palestinian factor": I liked the people I met in the Holy land so much. They were so empathetic,so patient so resilient! I have found a lady from Gaza at one if the UA-cam channel. She was a widow with three little kids, and she asked for help - but with such a dignity and graciousity. I asked her to send me video of her kids, she did it immediately and afterwards we became really friends. Our sisterhood last for almost 4 years. She lives in Khan Younis, and today I cried before texting her. Alhamdulillah she and her family is alive. But every single day I wait a kind of bad news... I come back to the point of dealing, acting in the name if humanity. Working in a media outlet with a very pro-israeli stance among my colleagues I try to change their minds and to initiate a discussion at the editorial level of the war coverage. All I ask is to make it "more balanced", to make some Palestinians voice to be heard (as far as I know there are no Palestinians in Latvia, so it is a challenge), to make aid organisations position being vocalised.... I didn't get succesed so far. And I feel very helpless. My Jewish friends - real and at FB blame me for biased approach. But these are they who put ethnic before ethic, not me. I hope Allah SWT shows me the right way. And I will very appreciate for your advices and ideas what could be done in my situation. Sorry for being so long, but your conversation really pushed me to share my story. Peace be upon you all and peace be upon the Holy land and bleeding Gaza
My respect to you sister. I think that both you and I know that apportioning blame, the "eye for an eye" mentality and putting ethnic before ethic can never resolve a situation like we have today in Gaza and Israel. At some stage we all have to say STOP; accept none of us is perfect, and accept that there are faults on both sides, but NOW is the time to look FOWARD in the spirit of forgiveness, humanitarianism, brotherhood and sisterhood.
People who have experienced a ton of abuse, always will be the most empathic and kind. Because they've lived thru so much pain and trauma.
Some tips to try and get people to "see the light"
Ask them about how Israel helped establish Hamas to counter the less fanatical PLO... It's documented, most don't reply back or say it's "Propaganda" to try to avoid the question but really have them try to give you an answer, or ask them to look it up and discuss it at a different time!
Another point is to discuss the real history of Jewish people in Europe, why did SO many Christian European countries try to expel their European Jewish neighbors?
And then talk about the Zionist movement and how that's different from the Religion of Judaism and the State of Israel...
Then to the Nakba, Ethnic Cleansing/Genocide of Palestinians etc and ask them WHY are Palestinians being punished for the sins of Christian Europeans to the Jewish Europeans?

This was a very moving interview. I am Jewish and grew up in Toronto. I agree with many of the Rabbi's points and the moderator. I feel terribly saddened to see what Israel is doing and has been doing to the people of Gaza and Palestinians in the West Bank. I pray for peace and understanding between our people. I pray for the freedom, safety and dignity of all. I pray Palestinians can return to their homes and live in peace, dignity and prosperity.

There is only One true living God who sacrificed Himself for humanity! The Palestinian peoples, whom manifest as Hamas, are like flies! They follow their lord Beelzabub, Satan, sacrificing their children to Baal! Wherever they go, the stench of their killing and destruction follows! Their hatred is not only towards Jews but fellow man because there is no love within them. In spirit, they are the modern day Philistines of the Bible and no one wants to live with or near them. But through heavenly Father's Divinity, what Satan meant for evil in me, Yahweh used for good to confound the wise and mighty in this world. I am a Gentile by physical birth but a Jew, and Lion's whelp, reborn in the Holy Spirit of Father Yahweh: grafted into the natural Olive Tree, Messiah Jesus, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Whom bears my name in the breastplate, heart and ephod of His righteous judgement, the Urim (Law) and Thummim (Prophets, Spirit). These righteous lots are cast continuously upon me and all His Disciples, the learned, whom bear record of Jesus in earth as He is in heaven. (Ex 28:29, Prov 3:3) Christians are priest and Temple Keepers of the Holy Spirit! A free gift by grace through faith in Jesus Messiah, our Father and Triune Creator! (Eph 2:8) Christians live and walk, in earth, bearing witness of His Word and Spirit, in One which are One in the heavenly record of: 1. Father, 2. Word (Immanuel Isa 7:14, 8:8, Jhn 1:14) and 3. Holy Spirit. (1Jhn 5:7-8) Through baptism (our ritual of washing) by the water of repentance, blood of atonement (justification by faith) and Holy Spirit of sanctification (renewal in regeneration), Christians are following Jesus: crucifying the evil lust of the flesh in "Adultery, fornication,
uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry,
witchcraft, hatred, disputing, wrath, strife, resistance to the Law of Father God, heresies, envyings (ambitions to equal or excel others),
murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like." (Gal 5:19-21) Through His Spirit, we live and walk in the hope of our redemption. This is our daily priestly offering, by fire, to God the Father and it is a living sacrifice (Lev 3:3)

2. Joy
3. Peace
4. Longsuffering
5. Gentleness
6. Goodness
7. Faith
8. Meekness
9. Temperance
"Against such fruit as this, there is no Law." (Gal 5:22-25) "Wherefore the Law was our
schoolmaster to bring us unto the Gospel, Messiah Jesus, through repentance, that we might be justified through faith in His precious shed blood. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For as it is written, "Mercy (the Spirit,Testimony/Prophets) and Truth (Law) are met together; righteousness (Law) and peace (Spirit) have kissed each other" (Psa 85) within our souls, to conceive a new and born again creature: circumcised of that fleshy foreskin of an evil heart! (Deu 10:16, 30:6, Jer 4:4,17:9, Jhn 3:3) Let your light shine brothers and sisters!
