- Welcome to my Hand Plane Foundations course. In this course I'm going to introduce the different types of bench planes and discuss their setup and use, focusing on the planes you’ll need most as a new hand tool woodworker. I’ll cover sharpening the iron, setting up the cap iron, and troubleshooting and tuning the tool up to perform at its best. I’ll finish up by building a modern two tone cutting board from some beautiful North American hardwoods, completely by hand.

Thank you again Sir.🎉
Thanks, Bob! This is by far the best video on the subject that I am aware of. I liked the 'unobtanium' shtick - looking for a perfect quartersawn piece of bog oak harvested under a new moon has kept me from making a pair of winding sticks for ages now. Your explanation has encouraged me to try with the old growth pine I salvaged from a window frame.
Also, thanks for the nice and clear explanation on how to ensure straightness - really excellent content.
Nice, Bob. Thanks for putting this together. One modest advantage of tapered winding sticks (in addition to the aesthetics you mention) is that they have a lower center of gravity which makes them a bit more stable that rectangular winding sticks should they get jostled while you're using them.
"Unobtainion". Love it!
This is great information sir. Thank you for sharing..

I would like to note that it’s not necessary for the upper, and lower edges of a stick to be parallel. It’s necessary for the two sticks upper, and lower edges to be identical to the other stick’s edges. If you do have an angle on the edges, it does mean you can’t turn them round, but it might be easier to clamp the two pieces together to match the angles, than to get two edges parallel.
I had a hard time believing someone would pay 200 dollars for winding sticks. But there they are, but considering who it was shouldn't be surprised.
Your audio is fantastic! What microphone are you using?
It’s a Movo wireless lavalier.
Would a longer plane such as a 5 or 7 help or hinder when following the technique for creating a hollow and planing the ends?
It will certainly help any time you’re trying to create an edge that is as straight as possible.
I want to be your neighbor.
