Could this new ultrasound change the way cancer is treated? - BBC News

  • A new cancer treatment which destroys tissue non-invasively is being trialled, and, if it gains regulatory approval, it could change the way that cancers are treated in hospitals.
Histotripsy is a type of focused ultrasound which, unlike heat and radiation based treatments, is more precise - which makes it a more appealing treatment option for smaller and widespread tumours.
US based firm Histosonics is running the trial, and they are focusing their efforts on the liver - an area which is notoriously hard to treat, with low survival rates for patients.
Just 46 people worldwide have received the procedure so far, but if it proves to be safe and effective, it could be rolled out on a much bigger scale.

It would have been great to have had for my ferret! I adopted her age 3 1/2, so she was already middle-aged, and took her to the vet immediately as it was extremely obvious to me she had either lymphoma or insulinoma. Well, she had lymphoma, but chemo made no sense - ferrets don't live that long; by the time treatment was over she'd be elderly already, and would have suffered for no reason. So she received no treatment except for pain and swelling and eventually died of the cancer a little earlier than most ferrets live.

Fifteen year wait for treatment suggests the possibility of many deaths occurring on the waiting list. After the colon cancer I had was surgically removed, there was a wait and see if this would metastasise to my lungs. This did not happen, but instead the lung was hit with a small tumor of its own. This was removed by keyhole surgery and only several small faded slits remain where the surgeons blade went to work - a memory now faded.
I believe that I've been fortunate to have dodged a bullet and now being cancer free.

“I couldn’t do anything,” she admitted in the documentary. “It was like someone was actually inside my skull, like pushing out. I can’t explain how awful it was. And it was I was dizzy. I was literally crawling.”
Recalling fears the symptoms could be permanent, Florence broke down in tears describing how she required assistance to perform normal everyday activities.
“I really thought my life was over,” she sobbed. “I couldn’t even cook food. I couldn’t even get up. I couldn’t take care of myself. My mother came by twice a week to change my bedsheets, do a food shop for me, and clean my house. I couldn’t do anything at all.”

    • @HowP88
      @HowP88 Рік тому

This isn't possible - tumors are not separated from organs, they are cells of the organ (eg in this case liver) that have become cancerous. Therefore the cancerous liver cells are actually inside the healthy liver. If you could physically separate cancer cells from healthy cells, then you may as well just surgically extract them, which is pretty much exactly what cancer surgery is.

I don't see myself as a victim or a survivor of cancer. These are overly emotive terms best left to the sensationalist gutter press. The disease came, was successfully treated and I continued with my life. Local hospital medical staff are highly trained and well accustomed to treating cancer, especially the more ubiquitous varieties one of which I experienced. Other folks experience different and terminal outcomes and I'm so fortunate that I did not. It's the luck of the draw.

Plant based food is also a step in the right direction. Combined maybe even better results. Watch Dr. Greger’s Nutritional facts in this subject.

    Old news.
When I studied Electronic Engineering, in Aberdeen, we also needed to study waveguide theory.
I had a general interest in Biology also.
Getting a an object to resonate to destruction had fascinated me for a while and as I had an interest in human biology, I applied my thoughts.
After a good few years, of quiet research, I went to a local enterprise company. I needed help with patents.
To cut a very long story short, I did not succeed. Apparently, some university, associated to the enterprise company, beat me to the post.
Well, we keep trying to live. As for the learning?

What if experts build an MRI machine that also has sound beams built-in all around the patient that be directed from 360 degrees at any focal point to target cancer cells, or any other treatable condition with focused ultra sound.

Unfortunately not ,ultrasound(sound waves)only can pass through soft tissues n cavities. BUT Brain lies inside protected by skull bone which only can be passed by CT/MRI/Radiation.
But it can be used by opening skull bone ..but no significant studies are there.maybe in near future somethings will be developed. Also brain is vital to all the body functions n each part is having important functions. So Dr's try not to do collateral damage n permanent disability.
