I've discovered recently that I find watching small locomotives shunting slowly is very calming. Like watching fish in an aquarium. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this video genuinely had a positive effect on my mental health.
This is very cool seeing what I assume is your very first shunting video. I'm watching your thomas shunting videos but am sad that all of them as well as older thomas videos cant be commented on. But I appreciate that you're using them for more than just play time. You're using them for actual railroading work and for that I salute you. I remember doing stuff like that when I was a kid running on our train club layout. Top Notch.

A great video, and a very difficult one to do. I know from experience, shunting with short wheel base wagons is not easy and difficult to do on 2nd. radius points. you make it it look simple and are not angry when things go wrong, so very well done indeed.
+Sam'sTrains Yep! I have a small N scale portable switching/shunting layout, and I will admit that it does get a bit bland after a while. Whereas my HO/00 has a yard area and a loop, the great part with that is that a run-around loop isn't needed.

A couple of possible scenarios. 1) a large 35 wagon mixed freight arrives behind a 9f or 28xx or the like and a couple of shunters have to distribute the wagons to various sidings. 2) A big train arrives as bfeore but the shunters have to re-marshall it into two smaller 'pick up; type local goods which are then hauled away by 0-6-0's or 2-6-0's or the like. Can you do a shunting session with a pre grouping shunter while GCR 'Mons'and a Lord of the Isles run around the loops please? That should be interesting as it should give some semi realistic running.
what you need is a small maginet and a thin stick or pole, some string or rope, tie the maginet onto the stick with the string then make sure its sercure, after then you can poke it between the trucks/coaches and not have to de-rail or show your hands doing it,
Sam you should totally do another version of this vid with Thomas and Percy shunting caches and wagons for Gordon and James. Perfect for Thomas fans. Loved the vid Sam keep up the variety( and humour ;) April fools :D But my suggestion is serious

Wrong Guard's Van Sam made up an open wagon goods train, complete with the all-important Guard's Van at the back. His Great Western 2-8-0 Tender Engine came to survey her train. She sidled up to the Guard's Van and gave her master a frown. The Guard's Van was the LNER kind. "Hey there, Buster," protested the 2-8-0, "I don't take kindly to LNER Guard's Vans. Where's my GWR Toad Van? Honestly, you can't get the staff these days." Sam spoke to her in his nicest manner. "I don't have any Toad Vans yet," he said smoothly, "so you run with what you're given. Understand?" The 2-8-0 refused to be consoled. Sam threatened to confine her to her box if she didn't co-operate. The Great Western Engine still wouldn't do as she was told, even when Sam forced her to couple up to the train smoke box first. Broome Manor chuffed past with another, somewhat shorter, goods train and stopped for a moment. The 4-6-0 mixed traffic engine backed up. "Look at my goods train," suggested Broome Manor. "I have six closed vans and an LMS Guard's Van at the back. OK, not the right kind, but it's a Guard's Van all the same. I'm not complaining, so why should you?" The 2-8-0 sniffed and sneered at her LNER Guard's Van stubbornly. "It's not dignified," she argued. James the Red Engine came by quietly. "Uh, I'll forgive you for pinching my line," he said, choosing his words carefully. "I learned a lesson for those words. I now do anything I'm told. Not that I'm trying to interfere." He vanished with three LMS coaches in tow. At a sensible speed, that is. The 2-8-0 wouldn't budge beyond the points. Sam removed her and an unusual double-header took her place. The tender engine wished she'd been better behaved. She had to watch from her shelf, while Thomas and the Santa Express Tank Engine hauled the goods train she'd refused to pull along the track. The tank engines did a good job, and Thomas was rewarded with Annie and Clarabel for his efforts. The 2-8-0 cried herself to sleep that night. She wondered if Sam would ever forgive her. I think she deserved her punishment however, don't you?
Hi Sam, enjoyed the shunting for a refreshing change. Shouldn't the brake van be at the back of the load of the 3F and not next to the engine? Can I just say that if shunting is one area where derailment is likely, especially when pushing, that you have demonstrated that laying track on carpet is NO BIG ISSUE !!! Have to say the Golden Eagle is just beautiful. I really enjoyed this video. Please do more shunting, well every now and then eh !!! Thanks
I know I'm a bit late, but before the Jinty started to slip, I told myself "No way would that little tank engine be able to pull all those in real life." And I have to say, I may have called it.
Sam, I always think the mark of good shunting is realistic un-coupling....I'm planning to use rare-earth magnets strategically placed around the layout.
it can be fun shunting cus if you have trucks and coaches you can short them out, but you will need a shunter or a shunting yard, hmmm maybe a bit to add to the railway? just a easy to remove part for shunting?
a new a4 !!! love that loco and the livery is one of my favourites !! , does she have sound ?? , love the video and would like to see more , gives the hobby a bit more of a real feel when you assemble the train your self :) - all the best mate

Hi Creepy - if you want to control two on the same track, you'll want to look into DCC - I'll have a video coming on this soon! If you want to run two locos, each on a separate track, you can do that with regular DC operation! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah that's true - nahh the uncoupling ramps aren't too great, and they're a bit unsightly too! The best ones I've seen use magnets, but even those are a bit of a pain to set up! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

When an engine gets stuck, I often send an extra shunter to help pull or even push.. works even without DCC.

it can be fun shunting cus if you have trucks and coaches you can short them out, but you will need a shunter or a shunting yard, hmmm maybe a bit to add to the railway? just a easy to remove part for shunting?
Yeah that's not a bad idea - it's just tricky figuring out where I could build a shunting yard!

Hi Creepy - if you want to control two on the same track, you'll want to look into DCC - I'll have a video coming on this soon! If you want to run two locos, each on a separate track, you can do that with regular DC operation!

u should move the coaches up a little bit more in the station part and u should also pick up the freight car with the box cars so u don't wast time

Would be good if you could uncouple without touching them. Do the uncoupler ramps not work too well?
Yeah that's true - nahh the uncoupling ramps aren't too great, and they're a bit unsightly too! The best ones I've seen use magnets, but even those are a bit of a pain to set up!
