    Hey guys, if you're interested in how I actually captured the footage from both handhelds and RF-based systems here, be sure to click "show more" on the description. I've got a full explanation in there! There was no PC emulation involved; the only emulators were those on the handhelds that I was testing.

      No the Go is great i had a 1000 before and theGo has 16GB with expandable storage and a great screen. the only way to get more storage for a psp is by getting a M2 to microsd adapter.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 років тому +1

      Well, but you don't really need that much storage unless you're putting a bunch of UMD's on it, which you have to with a Go if you want to play PSP games. You don't have to with one of the other models, though you certainly can if you want to. I don't know if you saw in the video that I have 1.8GB free on my PSP, and that's on a 4GB card with all those emulators and full romsets installed. (Not every emulator available, but all the ones you see me scrolling through.) Retro games just aren't very big. UMD's are big, but you can just play UMD's off the UMD with a 2000 or 3000, which you can't do with a Go :)

    • @Lollllllz
      @Lollllllz 7 років тому +1

      however the go uses m2 that maxes out at 16gb and the 1000/2000/3000 series uses memory stick that tops out at 32gb.The screen is miles better on the go but the sliding form factor and digital only model with the go may turn off some as in my case as i never got comfortable handling the go than the 1000 .

    • @TheSampleSlayer

      I managed to get 64GB working without an issue with an M2 to microSD adaptor on my 3000; however i ran into issues with 128GB! I tried this with multiple microSD cards ruling out a fault with the microSD its self. Basically sometimes the PSP would recognise card run without issue but other times it wouldn't even show up; I'm not saying its impossible; there are videos on UA-cam with people claiming the PSP can run 256GB of storage and if read the forums people argue it back forth, but if you ask me and well lets face it most people do ;) from my experience 64GB is highest storage size you run stably on this device!

    If you're going to buy a PSP buy a Japanese one. They run just fine on the same software (all you have to do is change the Language to English in the settings first), but they won't play NA or Europe UMD disks. Despite this they're cheap as chips and are easily modded. I just got a 1000 for $20 and that includes shipping. 2000s will run about $5-10 more. They're cheap because they were so prolific in Japan.

    Last I remember SNES emulation was not that good on my PSP, it was playable but the sound would stutter sometimes and it would lag a lot during graphic heavy moments. I recall testing 3 emulators and only one of them worked fine, the one with the Mario intro. But last time I did was over a year ago, don't know if the emulators got updated or something.

    "Some people would say that Sony's PSP was a failure as a handheld gaming system"
    >8th highest selling console of all time, ahead of the NES, SNES, GBA, N64, 3DS, PS4, Genesis, Atari 2600, Xbox and Gamecube
    The Xbox 360 sold 84mil. The PSP sold 82mil. That is anything but a failure. Even the PS1 only sold 100mil.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 років тому +1

      It was trounced by the competition. Game systems don't exist in a vacuum.

    • @toxy3580
      @toxy3580 7 років тому +9

      Selling 82 million units is hardly trounced. The DS did twice as well yes, but the DS did better than all but the PS2. If the PSP was a failure then so was the SNES, PS3 etc. Getting trounced is selling 3.5 mil like the wonderswan vs the gameboy's 120 mil.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 років тому +3

      The SNES outsold the Genesis/Megadrive by 19 million units, so I'm not sure what you're getting at there, . The PS3 was outsold by the Xbox 360 by less than 200,000 units worldwide - or about 0.4%. Still, some *do* consider that a failure given the margin the PS2 had over the original Xbox and GameCube. The DS outsold the PSP by 2 to 1, and 3 to 1 outside of Japan. That's not something for Sony to break out the champagne over.

    • @TheIzzyNobreShow
      @TheIzzyNobreShow 7 років тому +8

      I agree, Toxy. Loved the video but this notion that the PSP was a failure is really, really odd to me. More global sales than both the Genesis AND the SNES put together is hardly a "failure".

    • @toxy3580
      @toxy3580 7 років тому +5

      I'm getting at the PSP outselling all of those... it's not hard to figure out.
      "That's not something for Sony to break out the champagne over"
      nor is the Xbox 360 nearly getting outsold by the PSP anything to break champagne over if the PSP is apparently such a failure.
      "The DS outsold the PSP by 2 to 1,"
      did you actually read what I wrote? I just said the PSP sold 82 million and the DS sold double. And then you just copied it.
      "The SNES outsold the Genesis/Megadrive by 19 million units"
      and the PSP outsold the SNES by 30 million.
      guess the SNES was a failure then. So was the NES, that's only 60 million. GBA? Only 81 million, less than the PSP.
      Again, a failure I assume?

      Actually, the PSX on PSP isnt emulation at all, its running on the actual PSP hardware. That is why it runs perfectly with no glitches. You can even output it to an older TV with the composite cable and it will look exactly like its coming from a PS1. The PSP really is overall the best retro system in terms of versatility.

    There's one more reason to get the 3000 model. You can play every game through composite video output, which is a godsend for anyone still rocking a CRT TV. The 2000 model only allowed you to play PS1 games through composite, and everything else through component.
    And there actually is one reason to get the Go. You can play with the DS3 controller.

      Didn't realize that, thanks for the info! Do the composite cables actually output full screen? The component cables do not, which is a bummer. (I had to zoom all the footage for the video; the PSP seems not to scale the image at all when outputting over component.)

    • @AmartharDrakestone
      @AmartharDrakestone 7 років тому

      No they don't. You can only go full screen on PS1 games and some emulators (don't remember which, though). A decent way for recording PSP footage is RemoteJoyLite, which can output PSP's video signal through USB to your PC.

    • @ModernClassic

    Wow, I didn't even know the PSP lost PSN support last year. Thankfully you can still legally get games onto the system via a PC or PS3 through a USB.
    That and plenty of ISO files exist, as well as emulators and the bizarre world of homebrews. In my personal opinion I think it's the best handheld ever made and I completely regret selling mine years ago for a Vita. The Vita is truly a wonderful handheld, but there's just a certain level of charm the PSP has.

    Buy a PSP Go. Seriously. Onboard 16 or 32 gigs, and a very useful form factor. It's hard to use the analog stick for long periods of time, but you don't need it if you're going retro. I can actually stick it in my pocket, which is actually a thing I do when I don't want to carry anything in my hands and means I pretty much carry it with me at all times. That's the difference to me, I'd have to think about taking the normal PSP whereas the go is already in my pocket. Throw on a screen protector and you're good.

    Vita homebrew has really grown up in the time since this video came out. You can easily jailbreak any Vita running firmware up to 3.70 (which is- and may well remain- the current firmware), and once you install Adrenaline, it's pretty much a complete replacement for a modded 6.61 PSP. The only reason to use a PSP over a Vita is to dump UMDs.
    If you want to try your hand at Vita modding, buy a 2000 model, as its 1.25gb 'internal memory card' partition is plenty of room to get your system jailbroken without needing a stupid-expensive Vita memory card.

  • @merouby
    @merouby 5 років тому +5

    Disagree about the Go. The Go came with a built-in 16GB of storage and there is an aftermarket internally-mounted microsd-to-m2 adapter allowing you to put hundreds of GBs of microsd to expand that. Coupled with the fact it's the only PSP with Bluetooth (allowing both PS3 Dualshock controllers and wireless headphones to work) to boot makes it worth it when you consider the portability factor of having your whole game library on the go. Get a PSPGo while you can as prices are going up.

      It sold 21 million units in NA. That's less than either the Genesis or SNES individually. But I did just now add an extra paragraph to the description explaining that while it may seem like I'm underselling the system a bit in the intro, I was really specifically comparing Sony's to Nintendo's sales. The DS did double up the PSP's sales worldwide, and tripled them in the US.

      Speaking of europe, in my country the psp was a very common presence... When you said that it didn't sold well it sounds like total crap and the fact that there were hundreds and hundreds of games available shows this
      What really died quickly of an horrible death was the vita because sony started to release stupid mobile like games instead of proper games as they did for psp, then abandoned it and also because of those stupid overpriced propietary flash cards. Today the vita is pretty much dead but strangely enough there is a good chunk of indie games getting released.

    That Phantasy Stat comparison was just sad and lonely.
    I play my PSP every week. I grabbed it back when MGS Peace Walker launched and being a MGS dork I had to play it. This was 2010, IIRC. $120 new in box so, for me, $160 total JUST to play MGS:PW. Yeah.
    I finished the game and had a few others to play such as the two God of War PSP titles. Both were great!
    Then it sat for a couple years totally untouched until a co-worker showed me his PSP Go. It was ok but I preferred my 3000 series due to UMD and asthetics and HOLY SHIT HE HAS EMULATORS ON HIS! He tells me how easy it is to softmod and I've been rocking a non-permanent hacked PSP since 2013.
    I beat a ton of NES classics I had in childhood for the first time with my PSP. I never beat SMB as a kid! I never beat Zelda! I beat Mike Tyson's Punchout again over the course of a few dumps due to save states! Add in Genesis, GB, GBC, GBA, Atari, SNES and I can't see myself without owning a PSP.
    Forget a Raspberry Pi (if only for pre-98 gaming), get a PSP.

    I disagree with your opinion on the Go. Go is pretty much the best model of PSP if you want to buy it now, due to its small size and relatively crisp display. It also has 16GB of internal storage and (although quite expensive and rare these days) Memory Stick M2 support. (it even has bluetooth support lol) Having no USB drive is a bummer, but purely for homebrews no other models compare to the Go.
    That said, I have been a PSP enthusiast since 2006, and I happen to have all models of PSP and even a Go, which let me just rip the UMDs with my other PSPs and load it up on the Go. If authentic PSP games are what you dig, yeah you should get a 2000 or 3000 (1000 is outdated with less RAM, and the diagonal input on the D-pad is a PITA)

    Nice video, good roundup. Although completely disagree about the PSP Go. I bought one for emulation and its perfect. Much prefer it to the 1/2/3000 for one huge reason you overlook and that it is far more compact and fits perfectly in a pocket. The PSP Go display also has a slightly higher pixel density than the other PSPs due to its smaller but same resolution display. I also see absolutely no reason at all why anyone would want to carry UMD discs when every title is available as ripped ISO and plays exactly the same as the original, no advantage to having a umd disc whirling around in your machine imo if you dont need it.

      There is a tendency for American reviewers to label the PSP a “failure” because it did not sell well (enough?) in the US. I challenge that perspective.
      Do you think that a Japanese company like Sony would label a product a failure just because it sells 50% in its home market? Would American or European manufacturers think that way?
      The NES was a disaster in terms of sales in Europe. However, few European reviewers would call the NES a “failure”.
      So you did your homework. I just wish that more American bloggers would expand their view beyond just the US market.
      I have never seen a source where Sony labeled the PSP a failure - and why would they? It’s still the 8th best selling console ever.

      Francisco Aviles He mentioned it in the video. The Vita is great and all, but homebrew is a hassle because you need to be on a specific firmware version to hack it (3.60) and sony still releases firmware updates. Compare that to the PSP: "Can it be hacked?" "Does it say PSP on it?" "yes" "then yes, it can be hacked" "Will sony fix that?" "*laughs* - good one!"

    • @Adolf1Extra
      @Adolf1Extra 7 років тому +2

      The current state of PSVita homebrew scene makes the Vita infinitely superior to the PSP. I own both a PSP and a Vita, both homebrewed. In the west, EVERY brand new Vita is on a hackable firmware, because they don't produce it anymore here. Brand new ones also come with a memory card to get started with. SD2Vita also solves the issue with no SD support, you can get one for $3 from china. There is not a reason why anyone would want to use a PSP, other than collector purposes.

    • @Localhorst86
      @Localhorst86 7 років тому +3

      Adolf1Extra *IF* you can find one brand new in the west. At least here in Europe the Vita seems to have been disappeared from shelves, I can now only find used Vitas at gamestop and similar places. Yes, homebrew has improved lately but I still use my PSPs more than my Vita even though I have an SD2Vita. The PSP game library is amazing as well and looks way better on the PSPs native screens compared to the upscaled blurriness of the Vita IMHO. I am also not a particular fan of the Vitas (1000 fat model) OLED screen. I prefer LCD type displays. Plus the Vita is a lot more expensive than the PSP, the last PSP I bought two weeks ago was only 20€, a Vita usually runs at ~129€ used around here.
      So it really is a matter of opinion I guess.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  7 років тому +1

      Much more expensive, not nearly as portable. And no good Atari 8 bit/5200 emulator on Shield that I've seen. There are a few for Android, but they have problems even on stock devices, and none of them seem to support the Shield. That's an absolute dealbreaker for me.

    • @Hostile_Design
      @Hostile_Design 7 років тому

      I have not tried emulating anything older than the NES on it, and can't speak for that. I totally agree with the portability, this is a much bulkier device and would never fit in a pocket but for someone always carrying a bag, I still think it's a reasonable size. The price is high and rising since the device isn't manufactured anymore, yes.
      I does however offer a solid set of functions and emulators being an android device, fantastic battery life (especially running old 2D games), a large protected touch display and a good built in controller, all in one pack. This makes it a very attractive portable retro gaming machine if you ask me. Emulation however isn't perfect, some games don't run very well on Android emulators either.
      Not hammering on the PSP though, I think it's great for what it is and can stand on it's own library alone, I initially considered it but the Nvidia won out due to the much more comprehensive emulation capabilities (especially for later games) and nicer feature set.

    • @L337g4m3r
      @L337g4m3r 7 років тому +1

      ..And the screen is MUCH better on the Shield. It is 720p, has faster response time. If you look at the same emulator on both it isn't close. To me the screen on PSP is a deal breaker, I have tried it. It makes every retro game look fuzzy due to the odd resolution. There are GPD and JXD devices that run emulators better and can do up to Dreamcast. That said I don't think there is a perfect device yet, one that is portable, runs emulators perfectly, has perfect controls and screen etc.

    • @Hostile_Design
      @Hostile_Design 7 років тому

      Indeed. The perfect 3x scaling of 240px (which most older games run) is also a major benefit.

    • @L337g4m3r
      @L337g4m3r 7 років тому

      Yes integer scaling looks cleaner than fractional especially at lower resolutions. Nothing goes evenly into 272 PX so...

It was also at that time that the PSP could also serve as a smart device, the homebrews enabled taking notes, browsing servers, emulation, and whatever else you could think of at the time. It was a really powerful hand-held. I didn't bother much with emulation, but I did have a few PS1 and NES/SNES games on it that I really liked (Mario, Soul Reaver, DOOM, Quake II - that sort of stuff).

    I was looking up emulation handhelds and people always reccomended the psp over any of the Chinese handhelds made specifically for emulation. While I agree the psp is great if you have one but I bought a RG350 and do not regret that choice. I have a psp 1001 and boy is the screen trash. I loved it when I got it and babied it so it's in fantastic shape but the screen is so dim and blurry. Like looking through a veil of vaseline lol
    A psp 2000 and up costs just as much as the RG350 new and if you don't care about n64 emulation or umd games so a $60 rg350 is the better deal.

    I have a PSP with 240gb of SD card capacity. It has 180 PSP games, 80 PS1 games, every NES, SNES, Genesis, GBC, GBA and Gameboy game I could want. While there's still 40gb free. I have a 3000 model and I noticed the SNES games even Donkey Kong Country run smoothly on my 3000 and i've seen videos of people running them on older PSP's and they lag. So I don't know if the 3000 are faster but I would recommend those from my personal experience.

      Even the psp go has some issues with DKC, but I just had to change some settings and it run perfectly, and I don't think there's any hardware capabilities difference between the 2000 and the 3000 aside from the form factor

      Yep, the 3000 and Go run SNES games at full speed especially if you set the processor to 333Mhz

    Thank you very much for posting this video. I wish I had seen it sooner, since I ended up getting the PSPGO instead of the 2000. Still, can't wait to mod it and try some nice old SNES and NES games. Great channel, subscribed!

    Two things that I didn't hear get mentioned. 1--There is no region code for games on UMD discs. That extends the library of physical games to well over a thousand titles. 2--The 2000 & 3000 models can be hooked up to your TV with a composite or component cable.

    The psp games moved to the playstation website so if you were to get a psp go without cfw you can still buy games from the playstation store using the playstation website.

    Two things you didn't mention. 1--The 2000 & 3000 models also have an output for connecting your PSP to your T.V. using composite or component cables. This actually works better than you'd expect...except when some games require the screen to be flipped sideways. 2--Let's not forget about the movies/shows released on the U.M.D. format. While exact numbers aren't clear, approximately 700 (probably more) movies covering all genres was released in North America for the PSP. Great little handheld console for sure.

      Definitely not it's being worked on. One of the biggest gripes was the lack of bluetooth,I'm sure they are not making that mistake again. Lot's of bits of info all around the net. Hopefully somewhere around 2018'ish! Fingers crossed money fund already in place eh.

    This is an excellent video, so far -- VERY HELPFUL, plus BurgerTime music -- but I'm a bit confused about one thing...
    I'm not sure why you're so surprised about the number of games in the library and that you compare the PSP to portables that sold "tens of millions of units."
    I mean, have you checked the Wikipedia best-selling consoles of all time list? The PSP is the third highest selling portable machine, having sold EIGHTY-TWO MILLION UNITS, and it sits at NUMBER EIGHT on what is basically the BEST-SELLING "VIDEO GAME MACHINES" of all time list. I call it that because it doesn't include PCs and because it doesn't differentiate between "consoles" and "handhelds." To be fair, though, I'm guessing that tens of billions (perhaps even a hundred billion) "PCs" capable of gaming have been sold, over the years (wildly extrapolating from that 400 million pre-installed Windows 7 machines, alone, were sold by the end of 2011 -- the VAST MAJORITY of which aren't gaming rigs and (sadly) have never even had a game installed on them... The console/handheld distinction is becoming a blurrier distinction, too -- every day in many ways -- of course including the Switch, the Windows 10-based gaming tablets with dockable grip controllers (dedicated to gaming) that popped up, last year, and that I don't think I'm the only person who's had an extra, dedicated set of power supply and component cables, with component extenders, that have made connecting my PSP to my HDTV and UHD/4KTVs, allowing me to simply plug two cables into it and play, since the late aughts... (and without scratching the screen).
    Most of that aside, again, the PSP is the #3 selling video game machine of all-time, having sold 82 million units. Combining the original Game Boys (original and color, which could be giving a really big advantage to them, but... well, no, those 25,000 PSP Go!s don't help), about 119 million have sold, and the Nintendo DS is the highest selling handheld, with its iterations (fairly, I think, minus the 3DS) having sold 154 Million units.
    So, 82 million PSPs is no joke. At number EIGHT, overall, it sits between the PS3 and the Game Boy Advance (they had to make the cutoff somewhere, because you wouldn't wanna add up all the "Playstations" into a single category, either...). Having outsold the Atari 2600/VCS, the Genesis (sorry), the Super NES, and the NES, while nearing the 3DS, I don't find the library size particularly surprising, really.
    Last, as far as graphics go, yeah, it shares 16.7 million colors with the 3DS, and given how relatively tall the "screen(s)" is(are) the pixels on the "game screens" are is essentially equal, too, doing rough math in my head. I have both, and it's really a matter of the devs, who aren't showing off graphic capabilities of the 3DS (minus the 3D, of course). If Nintendo were to have been focusing on graphics, for the past twenty years, they'd be a card game company, again -- no offense to "Magic: The Gathering" fans or fans under 14 playing "Pokémon" card games.
    As for emulating (esp. speed), it comes down to some VERY advanced frame rates across systems, what their common denominators are, running them at the intentioned speed, and many other factors that can take a TON of work to "perfect." I don't imagine a lot of open-source MAME folks working with the PSP, perhaps especially with its graphics ratio and FPS, plus, as you mentioned, the chipset.
