It is heartbreaking if it was your time between 20 and 30 when you heard that track and nowadays you understand the message of what a mess it is try'na survive
So, some people like Bastille's cover because they hear more emotion in it. And other people like the CIty High original because they hear more emotion in it. You do realize you're appreciating the same thing, right? (Music that conveys emotion well.) Some people say Bastille's cover sounds pretentious, distant, and inauthentic. Other people say the City High original is too upbeat, performed like a party song that doesn't fit its subject matter. Do you realize it could be that you're both right? Maybe both versions are flawed. And maybe they're both worth listening to, as well.
both are good, bastille's version sounds "pretentious, distant, and inauthentic" and city high one is too upbeat but it feels more authentic or whatever
What's so beautifully tragic about this song is that people from all walks of life (and accents, since apparently that's something people get upset about) can sing this song and it rings just as true for someone in the suburbs as it does for someone in a ghetto. Tragedy and pain are everywhere.
I like how they changed the genre completely it takes real artists to do something like that and have soul while singing the song. The original is still pretty good but this is more of my genre and I absolutely love this song.
6 years later and i'm still listening to this piece of art, still reading about all of these hateful comments which are still so fucking wrong. Bastille you guys did a better job. This songs means something special to me
I wish this became as popular as Bastilles cover of Of The Night was. This is a pretty powerful cover in my personal opinion. I'm not gonna say better than the original but sometimes old songs just need to be covered to feel a more modern story of the song and to relive the emotion that was exhausted from the original.
This was the first thing I ever heard from Bastille two years ago and I still maintain that it's the best song they've ever done, including their other covers and originals.
I think this version shows the amazing emotion that Bastille puts into every performance, I would know seen them twice live, but I think the original is a great song. I don't understand how you can compare them? They are so completely different!
So powerful. Seriously amazing. I swear Dan Smith has the best voice I've ever heard. If angels exist, I can only imagine that's what they would sound like. It's just unbelievable, and together Woody, Kyle, Will, & Dan are just beyond amazing.
Why do people think that the cover ruined the actual song? I love how Bastille did this cover! Plus, i just heard the City High version, and i do not prefer it. And people think the video do not make any sense. Bastille is trying to say is, that this cover is like a "Road Trip" song. P.s, screw the 380 people who hate this song.
I like the Bastille version better. The original version is too upbeat to me. It doesn't match the lyrics, Bastille's version actually sounds dark and sad. I feel like he brought the emotion out of the song better.
Ben Rajan yeah they mentioned in an interview a while ago that they like taking the sad meaning of others' songs to cover, but hide the meaning under upbeat stuff for their own album honestly bastille summed up right there
I was looking to see bastille was and i clicked in this....i sat listening and found myself singing along to the chorus ...i totally didnt click the song...such a good cover :D
No matter what song it is that he sings he just gets it and puts it across better than anyone could, it like its the way the song was meant to have been sung like this
this band is just my absolute favorite! they make such good music in my opinion and every single song is sooo enjoyable! they are just awesome...i put them on the same level as coldplay! just awesome! and Dans voice and hair is soooo fucking sexy! i must now cause i'm a belieber :)
I think Bastille did it better it just because it gives it more feeling, I watched the original and this version just makes it more emotional and it's catchy
The other version has a far more upbeat and happy vibe in the instrumental while Bastille's has a more dark and depressing sound that matches the lyrics far better.
+Bellamy Blake the guy is at a party talking to a stripper who talks about her life and how she was raped or going to be and other shit and he's telling her to stfu and grow up in a happy way, I mean have you herd the song..?
This version isn't bad but I do prefer the City High version, Mainly because I love the girl singing the chorus, It adds more emotion. For me at least.
I can't agree. An average person couldn't put meaning into the lyric unless it's his own experience but he is an artist, he is able to relate to other people's feelings. Just as an actor can play a role convincingly without ever been the same situation. I think he did a great job here. I can feel the pain in his voice.
All i really need to say is that i once listened to this on repeat for about a week and it is better than their cover of we can't stop #BastilleAreGods
O my god harry Blue jeans. White shirt. Walked into the room you know i made your eyes burn. I was like James Dean For sure Im so fresh to deat ans sick as c c cancer I was sorta punk rock you grew up on hip hop I fit you better than your favorite sweater you know love is mean love hurts you still remember that day we met in december oh baby i will love you till the end of time i will wait a million years promis me remember that your mine baby can you see through the tears love you more than those bitches before say you remember say you remember baby ooohh i will love you till the end of time big dreams gangsta said i had to leave to start my live over you where like no please stay here we dont need no money we can make it all work but i headed out on sunday said i'd come home monday you stayed up waiting anticipating and waiting but i was chasing paper chought up in the game that was the last you heard oh baby i will love you till the end of time i would wait a million years prommis you remember that your mine baby can you see through the tears say you remember i will love you till the end of time I will love you till the end of time _you have always had your flaws upon your sleeves_ I would wait a million years _and i would always burry them deep beneath the ground_ baby can you see through the tears _you have always had your flaws upon your sleeves_ baby ohhh _and i would always burry them deep beneath the ground_
They took out the really powerful (and absolutely essential to the song) final lyric in the bridge, where he goes "Girl, I know if my mother can do it, baby you can do it." Instead, he just continues saying, "Stop making tired excuses." I know there's a bit of artistic license allowed when covering a song, but IMO it's not cool to ditch the song's points and meaning.
I don't see how you can think the original of a song is terrible? Obviously Bastille liked the original if they made a cover of it. I like the idea of covering this song but I don't think Bastille did the best job (my personal opinion). His accent is so heavy and the pacing of the song feels awkward. As if he can't get all the words in, which makes sense because it was originally a rap song so it was sung much faster. Maybe I'm a little biased because I grew up listening to the original by City High. I do like it, I just think it's a little awkward.
You cant even compare the two songs, there from different eras, this guy just sounds like he's been through alot of shit... city highs song was epic then and is epic now.. good attempt at a cover tho!
I actually like this version more because of the atmosphere and his accent. For me, this just fits way better, but it's just my opinion, I'm not out to offend someone here.
Heard them at the Slottsfjell festival in Norway on Saturday without having ever heard about them before, and fell instantly in love. Been a while since I've heard anything that's hit me this hard this fast. Can't wait for the full-lenght album! I'll be first in line at HMV!
1. It's City HIGH. 2. Not really. THIS version is awful. City High was the one who originally did this, and I love Bastille, but City High's was 10000x better.
Literally cannot take anyone seriously who starts off the sentence with "lol." How can the ORIGINAL version be shit? Bastille totally ruined this song. It's not good at all.
I'm convinced Dan Smith could sing the Barney song and make it sound heartbreaking.
That is the funniest, yet most accurate, portrayal of Bastille.
Lol
This is heartbreaking
I love you, you love me,
I wish starvation would kill my baby...
It is heartbreaking if it was your time between 20 and 30 when you heard that track and nowadays you understand the message of what a mess it is try'na survive

***** You're very welcome.
both are good, bastille's version sounds "pretentious, distant, and inauthentic" and city high one is too upbeat but it feels more authentic or whatever
wrong
Ok ??
I can appreciate both, but I think it’s important to note that this is a whitewashed version of the original.
10 years later and I'm still obsessed with this song
It is an amazing piece
couldnt even finish listening to it its that bad
bastille needs to get discovered for REAL like asap...they're talent is too much for just a small community of fans to handle
What's so beautifully tragic about this song is that people from all walks of life (and accents, since apparently that's something people get upset about) can sing this song and it rings just as true for someone in the suburbs as it does for someone in a ghetto.

good point

This is my first time hearing this. I can’t believe anybody likes this more than the original. It’s so basic and boring.

I can't believe I've never heard of this band until today !! So glad I came across them !! Brilliant band !!!
I live for this cover!!! Honest to God Bastille are just amazing!!
I wish this became as popular as Bastilles cover of Of The Night was.
This is a pretty powerful cover in my personal opinion.

this made me cry... xc
seeing bastille twice i one year, best year of my life
this is a beautiful song, it made me cry❤️
Love this song

Bastilles version is amazing. I love it so much
I LOVE this song soooo much! It made me cry first time that I listened it and since then I cant stop listening to it!!!

emotion? dull and boring pathetic cover

Starkkid1134 it's just footage from Gregory Nolans site lol
This song is way too deep! So pumped to see them on Sat in Jo'burg South Africa!
This song makes me feel more emotion than i ever have felt towards a song
I still don't understand why I sang this song as an anthem to my life... When i was 13... And hadn't experienced any of this
This song draws emotion and makes me want to cry
This cover is literally the best thing ever. It shows how brilliantly versatile Bastille actually are
One day their music videos will make sense...
ZXQaos just don't mention torn apart then we'll be okay
ZXQaos this isn't official.... Bastille didn't actually make the video just the audio kinda but there's some noises in it .-. So ye
i swear bro... haha their music videos confuse the hell out of me
this video made me think of human trafficking
Saw this live last night in Cambridge. Just amazing!!! So much atmosphere when played live
FAVOURITE PLAYLIST EVER!
How good it is! My words not enough for this masterpiece 😮
I'm not crying... my eyes are just sweating...
Man this is so perfect. Bastille has deffo grown on me so much in a short time. One of my favs bands!!!!
Both songs are amazing end of story.
Bastille is so incredibly talented. You guys can argue all you want but nothing is changing that
*Filmed with Dan's iphone.
This is so perfect. I don't think it could get any better. Like one of my favorite covers now.

this is absolutely beautiful
Dan's accent is not at all posh . Don't get me wrong, it's lovely but it's not posh.
Very well done!! (also I am excited to finally see them live in Berlin. Can´t wait for it!!)
My favorit of Bastille.
No matter what song it is that he sings he just gets it and puts it across better than anyone could, it like its the way the song was meant to have been sung like this
This song hits me hard every time I hear it.
Such an amazing song! Love that Bastille covered it!
Londie? But then, the way he says "Saturday" ,"party" and "home" gives a whole new meaning to the song.
most perfect cover of any song ever

This deserves so many more views, it's sheer brilliance!
Wow this song is really heavy
had this on repeat all day as i am snowed in.
How TF did this not get spotted before 31st Oct 2011???????
This is so beautiful, it's insane. So incredibly beautiful.
I think Bastille did it better it just because it gives it more feeling, I watched the original and this version just makes it more emotional and it's catchy
Have you even realized what this song is about?? How can you can say this one has more emotion
The other version has a far more upbeat and happy vibe in the instrumental while Bastille's has a more dark and depressing sound that matches the lyrics far better.
+Ta-Ho-Mas Williams yeah exactly, Bastilles version matches the lyrics better than a happy version about rape
+Cate cumberbatch it wasn't a "happy version" and the song definitely wasn't about "rape". Stop trying to take away from what the original song was
+Bellamy Blake the guy is at a party talking to a stripper who talks about her life and how she was raped or going to be and other shit and he's telling her to stfu and grow up in a happy way, I mean have you herd the song..?
This is beyond beautiful
this cover is epic.
