It's amazing how good the acting was from Edie this episode. Those emotions that just all come storming out into one big ugly cry. I bet the crew was amazed after they cut. Just a golden shot.
The Sopranos seasons main themes. Obviously, each season deals with a number of themes and each of these themes overlap into other seasons, but it's kind of interesting how the show lays out exploring all sides of Tony. Season 1 - Tony as a son. The main conflicts are with his mother and Junior, his father figure. Season 2 - Tony as a brother. The main conflicts are with his sister (who much like his mother tries to manipulate a mobster into killing T), his best friend/brother figure Pussy (who betrays him and forces T into committing a murder that actually bothers him), and his dead best friend's brother, who is a like a big brother to him in a way, or at least his Dutch Uncle. Season 3 - Tony as a father. Jackie Jr. being the tragic son figure that tries to emulate T and Jack Sr. There is much focus this season with AJ being like his dad leading to him not being able to go to military school bc of panic attacks. Season 4 - Tony as a husband. The season opens with Carmella scolding Tony that all things come to an end. By the end of the season, it is not a war with NY that erupts but a war with Carmella. Season 5 - Tony as a leader. This is the first season that Tony really starts to fall apart as a leader. When it comes to delaying dealing with Tony B (the main conflict), Tony severely fucks up. He loses a lot of respect with his men, which he never fully gains back. Season 6a - Tony as a human. The first 12 deal with Tony trying to be a better person in light of his near death experience and possibly falling back into his worse habits and in the last 9 (6b), possibly becoming worse than ever. Season 6b - Tony as Tony Soprano.
Since people have failed you, I will love to tell you that season 6 is my personal favorite season. It’s a very deep season with tons going on beneath the surface. There’s a lot of subplot that can only be extracted by the subtle signs given.
For me, the persona in his comma dream "Kevin Finnerty" is based on what Tony said to Dr. Melfi about how it would be if took a different path and was selling patio furniture. Also the joke the man made in the bar "He drives a Lexus. Finnerty, infiniti." symbolizes the state Tony is which is the purgatory and the afterlife (infinity) according to Catholic believes. "A little detour to heaven" like Paulie said when Chris was in a comma too. I think the Buddhist monks symbolize the possibility of reincarnation after life and it's even more related to what Tony said to Dr. Melfi after hanging out with Gloria who was a Buddhist. "You have to joyfully participate in the sorrows of the world". That's why the monk said "One day we will all die and then we will be the same as that tree. No me, no you."
Vito isn't "getting chummy" with Phil. They're in-laws. Vito is married to Phil's Cousin. And Fun Fact about that little nugget:- The actress who plays her, is Lorraine Bracco's (Dr. Melfi's) sister in real life. Don't sleep on that storyline that's about get real interesting really really soon.
This is exactly where me and my best friend since kindergarten are in the show too. He’s never seen it but I just couldn’t let him go on without him witnessing this masterpiece 😂
I actually started watching Sopranos re-runs casually while channel surfing, saw Pine Barrens quite a few times (lots of re-runs), but didn't start watching it sequentially or on a regular basis until S6 came out (probably was old enough by then to appreciate it more). Had to wait weekly for new episodes!
If you like the deep episodes you’ll love the final season(s). Remember back in Season 1 when Meadow sang “All Through the Night” in her HS choir?? It’s a song about a guardian angel figure. The Season 6 intro was a musical character montage & it also referred to Meadow as Ku... a guardian angel. The montage song is called “Seven Souls”. You need to understand the lyrics. There’s 7 souls named in the song but they showed 12 characters so you need to figure out which 7 of the 12 characters shown in the song belong to which soul. As the show plays out it will become clear why they started the final season with this montage.
yep that's his real accent but you could also hear the italian in it too because he was speaking with an Italian accent for over 6 years so much he actually had a hard time speaking with his normal one
Season 6 is my favorite. It’s split into two parts for a total of 21 episodes. 6A is great but some people found it to be a little slow. 6B more than makes up for it because it moves at 1000mph. Enjoy
Keep in mind by this point in the show the writers were way ahead of filming. So far ahead they actually had every episode script written & finalized all the way up to the series finale BEFORE they started shooting S6E1. Explains why the meaning is so deep from here until the finale.
25:39 Sfogliatella....mis-pronounced "sh-foo-ya-dell" by the stunads is a shell-shaped pastry with a sweet or creamy filling. It is also called a lobstertail pastry if you can't speak real Italian or stunad Italian.
There are people critical of the Kevin Finnerty story line, presumably because he's pretty much the total opposite of Tony. The writers had plenty of time to craft the storyline for the final 21 episodes since these were their first shows in nearly two years because creator David Chase took an extended break.
I love Tony. I can't help it 😭 Obviously, if he was a real person I'd feel differently. But James plays him so well that he can make a despicable character charming in his own way.
so like most humans… even the ones that don’t have anything else good going for them other than being kind to their loved ones, aka too many (almost most) people…
@@Cassxowaryyoure trying to hard to defend someone that’s unjustifiably bad. just cause you like the character and hes funny doesnt make him a hero. thats the beauty of the character
Art is where we turn off the judgmental parts of our brains and attempt to gain understanding. This is why I feel like I can love Tony as a character while not loving him as a personality. I find it very therapeutic.
Agree about Tony. Never related to him as hero or even anti-hero. He's a straight up criminal, who happens to have a degree of compassion for his family. Nor did I ever feel soft toward Vito Corleone, Travis Bickle, Walter White or Jules in Pulp Fiction, villains all in their own ways. Complex characterizations to be sure, but hardly worthy of moral admiration, though some have moments of redemption..
@@Cassxowary I suspect you are just being rude, but in the interest of fair play, I'll hear you out: what do you find to be hypocritical about the original comment?
The conversation about Carmela excusing Anthony Jr's bad behavior was funny. She's married to the head of a crime family!! LOL It's fascinating how through the course of this series how we, as viewers, forget how terrible these people are. All of them are guilty as sin
Thats why i dont get the AJ hate! We as viewers clearly see the lack of guidance given to him and yet none the irritation is directed at his parents. And when he does step up and decide to join the military, they sabotage it by getting him work with Carmine. AJ is a classic example of how american boys arent raised, but expected to just figure things out
dude’s got no luck, getting hurt in real life and then in the coma… and yah but it’s not about bedside manner, they legally have to say the worst case scenario for the sake of erring on the side of caution, for legal reasons if anything “my husband was 3 years old” I mean, have you met toddlers?😂 saved will AND when max temporarily died too!
A lot of people think that it's the actress that plays Charmaine. I can't help noticing that Wendy Hammers doesn't have more than a couple of credits to her name. That makes me wonder if that is just an alias of someone that went uncredited.
I believe AJ's behavior is deeply misunderstood. I confess that I don't think I really picked up on it until a couple rewatches. Some of his most annoying behaviors are defense mechanisms against Tony's rage. The superficial apathy is retreat from emotions that provoke Tony's anger. His avoidance of responsibility is a symptom of low frustration tolerance which is a product of Tony's yelling and screaming about everything. People will say I'm making excuses for him, but I'm trying to get to the root of it. It's important for AJ to put in the work.
People caping for Walter White is far worse. Not sure what reactors you are watching, but most I’ve seen have various moments of rooting for Tony and wanting him or others to get what they deserve. The Carm haters (usually commenters) are the ones that irk me
