Why haven't military personnel confronted Tubbyville and re-educated the slimey Alabaman?
Oh boy. 😮 This shall be great to watch .🤴🏽🧛🏻♀️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏽♀️
This is so typical of today’s GOP. Using a senate mechanism (bipartisan approval of Flag officers) as a partisan tool to advance a political agenda that they know will not work, yet will ensure reelection in the dark backwater from whence they came. Sad, but so predictable from a state that values football over the nations best interest.

It's Alabama, so you have to Grade them on a curve!
Is the meanness new.? Started with the Newt...in the 90's
Soo true.
Actually started with Karl Rove, but Newt definitely elevated jt
Very informative interview👍
It's important that we always assume the worst about our competitors, and declare ourselves the most righteous of all. That has been serving us well the last 60 years.
ASK HIM ABOUT TRUMP
She did.
Not a single damn voice and effort on a peace process. It’s shameful as world around us getting smaller our differences get bigger and more critical to the point of self destruction
Huhn... that's what France was saying right up until the German tanks started rolling in. Peace requires sanity and openness.
Agree
That agree was with alfred.
The entire GOP needs a complete overhaul from top to bottom. ⚔
The Bi-Partisan Corruption that promotes Wall Street Profits at the expense of Citizens of all Nations, appears to need cautious consideration?
Both Parties have cut Banking regulation since the Clinton Administration.
LOL
GOP is in the process of committing suicide, so just let them and see what emerges as an alternative.
I'm shocked after watching the GOP over the last 4 years, after have lived in Eastern Europe and watching Fox News... I'm watching a bunch of angry communists
@@bratis99 Sad but true, especially in Texas they always fail to address the real problem, stay safe. 👍🏼 💙
Terrific discussion!
so are you a GOP person, one that stands aside to watch Drumpf run roughshod over the rest of the world.
It has to be noted that Secretary Gates has the luxury of being post government services. When he was a republican, serving in Democratic administrations, he proved that the good of the country was his highest order of engagement. No way he could survive in todays GOP!!!
But he can try.
@@VintageTwin1 I’m all for someone reforming the GOP!!! But I’m pretty sure they have boxed themselves into a counter culture corner. While attacking teachers, Mickey mouse, and trans kids, and let’s not forget banning book about our struggles with slavery, we I’ll get you the redneck vote, especially in the south, America has moved on past Trump, I fear the GOP needs to suffer a humiliating nationwide defeat for any real transformation to occur!
Hope I’m wrong, but doubt it:-(

Secretary Gates is a very smart and pragmatic man, with a great deal of knowledge and insight! He would make a great presidential candidate. His energy level might not be what it was at one time but it sure isn't anything wrong with his cognitive functions.
He would. But, that is exactly why he wouldn't stand a chance. Today you either have to be a puppet or an extremist to get a real chance to run for President.
Secretary Gates 'grew-up' in the Department of Defense. He is intimately familiar with what works and what doesn't. Not a politician, but a potent operator.
You know whats wild? If this were a true democratic capital country, we'd never bail banks and companies out
He should run for President. Im a Democrat but I'd vote for him
Lol, sorry my friend this man is a nothing burger. Decouple and containment are the only answer at this moment in time. He’s touting the same bs our gov has been doing all along. We need to recognize this, quit trying to reinvent the wheel here. China is in fact an enemy of the the USA. If you doubt what I’m saying google why xi is telling his country to prepare for war. The time for appeasement is over. You and I didn’t put us here, the politico’s did.
I would not vote for any republican no matter how virtuous because the Republicans have lost their minds. As a practical matter Bob Gates would be considered to be a RINO by the MAGA zealots with no chance of being nominated. Voting for him is a fantasy.
He should be Trump's running mate.
@@Abraham-uk4xy looks like Trump will have a cell mate troll
You realize how many countries this guy indiscriminately bombed? No more war mongers.
Excellent interview. As always secretary Gates is full of wisdom and class. Learning from him is a lifelong task.
He is one of few real insightful statesmen which the US and the world have now. Director of CIA, who sealed the victory in the Cold War. Defence Secretary who solved Iraqi mess and changed the US military as unchallenged power in the world. He know all about geostrategy and power politics.
excellent interview - please listen to this very wise man.

@@kgetz3 … I do agree & it’ll happen soon. And it will be such a relief to have a generation in the game who gets it right the 1st time, every time!
@@jimhagberg6798we have a lot of work to do to overcome the disastrous economic policies that your generation adopted. Exploding wealth inequality and national debt at the same time skyrocketing the cost of education. Baby boomers took a country at its greatest strength and handed all control to a minority elite (comprised of both political parties). It’s tragic really
@@johnh4686, you know, until you & @kgetz3, I'd only heard that the newer generations are blaming & condemning Boomers for the ills of the nation. Not bothering with any introspection to determine whether anything they've done or are doing are contributing to the problem. I was in the Vietnam War for 2 years, came back brokenhearted & adamantly opposed to it. Nearly went out the bottom with a needle in my arm. Got saved by the Lord, worked as a day laborer, then welder, then went to engineering school (mechanical), designed-built energy infrastructure projects throughout the US; then for 5 years went to Russia & former Soviet Union countries to help them rebuild after the Cold War (which we won). Worked for Enron, saw the rot & left them 3 years before their collapse, warned my broker not to put anyone in the (& at the time they were the most admired Corp in the US, indeed, most of the world). Then worked catastrophic industrial accidents, rebuilding them (came in after 6 fatalities total); and now at 75 am still design-building industrial processing facilities coast-to-coast, border-to-border USA. And raised 3 great young men who have 3 wonderful wives & 10 beloved grandchildren.
To the extent I contributed to "the disastrous economic policies (of my generation)", my apologies. And very best wishes to you & your generation as y'all take your swing at the problems of the world. I think if there's anything that those disastrous policies demonstrate, it's that Americans are not fans of making painful choices. Unfortunately, as the sense of outrage & entitlement grows in this society; I doubt the next gens are any bigger fans of sacrifice.
One of the most important and impactful persons to ever hold that office. A fine man.

robert gates was a terrible SECDEF. literally some of the biggest problems our military is currently dealing with right now came from this guy. THIS is the guy who cancelled the F-22 production. AND he greatly underestimated how well China's military would modernize
Gates, an Establishment, Big Government Republican. Stay retired. The military IS politicized & bloated. We have way too many generals and admirals. In WW2 when we had 12M men and women under arms, we had 7 4 stars, now we have 44 and our military is nowhere near as large. Stay retired.
Does the US place national security over economic development? The answer is yes. The rational behind this action is just elaborated by Secretory Yellen. It is fine when the US does, but it is problematic when China is doing.
Follow the money.🤑 It is just that easy. 🤟🏼
The problem is the the GOP has not got the interest of the American people at it's heart .

Not get the logic behind about the difference between US bans Huawei and China bans Micron using National Security as justification. China puts economic growth as top priority and natioanl security is to protect the growth of China as much as possible.

Troy , this is under statement. Democracy needs new talent, now ! 💃🏾 AOC , is a classic example ❤.
Strategic ambiguity is interpreted as weakness by Chin & Russia. Absolutely disagree w him
Secretary Gates gives us a realistic approach to the country and to our position with Russia and China. He is totally balanced, after all he served as Secretary of Defense as a Republican in a Democratic Whitehouse. He is trusted and well versed. Very good interview as a veteran I salute him.
And he was fired by a Republican over ending an "early warning" about loose weapons when he was the Assistant Sec Def, and head of the Defense Intelligence Agency. For some reason the DoD has the odd qualm about trusting the politically motivated CIA sometimes and the DoD does have some concerns the CIA really doesn't normally look to.
Will the country ever recover from trump and maga?
No.
Only then, when the MF goes away!

Not just the political environment is polarized. The population is as well.
It's funny when the American bourgeoisie declares: we're in this together. What they are really saying is: let's be exploited. If you agree with this social contract, we will do our part as well: we will always throw an external enemy at you as a solution to the problem.

He needs to get to the crux of US and China- Russian problems and let go of Ukraine a nd Taiwan.
bigger defense great - we are 31 trillion in debt - how do we do that? Budget process is broken and the consequence is we run deficits and no party is held accountable - here is an idea balance the budget and you don't have to raise the debt limit- forget the chinese and russians they liove over there - our country needs fixing
Constant talk about China's human rights issue, militarism in South China Sea rocks and Taiwan are all considered internal Chinese matters, not of foreign concern.
19:46 "If they launched it from Russian airspace, then they have to be prepared to have the _remains_ *fall* on Russian territory." So gangsta.
He should run for President due to the other expected choices that we are going to probably have are bottom of the tank.
I would vote for him in a minute- he is what I think Eisenhower would be if he were alive today. He has the nub of conservative thinking, is very careful of over reach, but he has the compassionate eye that made Ike such a warmly taken POTUS. But Robert Gates is no politician, no culture warrior- those are not bad things at all, but it would make it nearly impossible as campaign leader. Would he be a good to great US Pres? I have no doubt of it- Robert Gates has so far succeeded at every job- and he got many of them after someone else made a hash of them- like the DoD- six years of Donnie Rumsfeld had thoroughly trashed much of the DoD- Mr. Gates found most of the Puzzle Factory's pieces and got them working well again- for that he was humbly asked by Obama to stay on, which he did. Someone here described him as a statesman- I would certainly agree with that.
In the early nineteen century we had a population in this world that followed a leader that had better served his country being in a straight jacket . Hear we are one hundred years from that period of time we have one such person in Russia a growing threat we in this country going down the same path that made Russia a third class country.

What can be done about polarisation? Suggest: 1 state should analyse, reveal and publish disinformation (has been done by Europe for years); 2 platforms and media must refrain from spreading it; 3 an notorious desinformants (eg done by Twitter and others) 4 name and shame on grounds of lack of civility 5 train people to behave in a civil way, including at school and university.
Great interview ,,, I have one question in this chest game ,, how far down do we go in arms not getting replaced before a multilateral attach from say china and Iran or Russia puts us in a very dangerous risk of not being defendable

Outstanding comment! Get rid of closed primaries and we will fix the problem.
Multiparty system. Both parties expand their platforms to keep power with party officials (a few dozen people). The land is too vast, the population is too diverse, and technology moves too fast to categorize everyone into two parties.

What he thinks and wants isn’t what you can do. He’s in the sky and out of realty.
There is nothing China can do that South America and Central America cannot do with investment. It is time to move manufacturing to Northern and southern hemisphere. Xi has demonstrated that power is all that is important to him. So be it.

Gates for President, please.
That is a very short sighted explanation for why congress is broken, no longer civil. The only true reason is the incentive structure. Each side is captured by the party extreme because of gerrymandering, and 2 political parties. They should have open primaries, rank choie votong, independent gerrymandering committee.
Get money out of politics with public financing
Really well done- everyone should watch. Margaret Brennan has a great grasp of things, and is an extremely talented journalist.
I'm so glad to see that Germany herself is waking up to the reality now that's she's no longer a Baltic State! :)
gates is a national asset. people in DC should have him on speed dail, and listen to him. the GOP needs to return to this brand of rational, reasoned thought and policy.....i.e., not the current bag of nutjobs.
MAGA nuts are loonies, but the majority of Democrats have gone too far left. If Clinton ran now, MSNBC would call him a white supremacist. Racial discrimination for housing, education, financial services etc are the norm under Biden’s administration.
Kissinger under Nixon made a colloidal mistake to help China be modernized to control then Soviet Union’s expansion to Eastern Europe.

so are you a GOP voter, one that stands aside to watch Drumpf run roughshod over the rest of the world because you get a little tax break?
More $$$ for war.
More homeless all citizens.
Very Smart.
Sure Ben.
It's always outstanding to listen to people like Robert Gates. I wish more people in government had as much common sense as he does. His perspective on the war in Ukraine was interesting. I totally agree with his idea that a line has to be drawn. So as to not allow other bad actors to take the same initiative, Putin did in Ukraine, to other places around the world going forward. Negotiations should always trump conflict in territorial disputes between nations. He is also right about the gerontocracy governing problem in America. Not to mention the nastiness of the discourse in our current political system. Let alone the disembowelment of our manufacturing capability. Which compromises the weaponry availability our armed forces need to fight a war in the future. Good job Mr. Secretary spot on.
Last I checked he is very old and has had a hand in almost everything that has gone wrong in this country over the past 40 years.
As for Russia, they WERE provoked. We threatened their sphere. We would not put up with a threat from Mexico, Canada or Cuba, etc. This is no different.
You do understand he's a warmongering mass murderer, right?
The Russians begged us to negotiate the neutrality of Ukraine. We were not interested.
Very few like Gates statesmen left in the US. Most of them now demagogs and morons, like Trump etc.
Oh look a war criminal disguised as a human .
No mention of the FBI whistleblowers!
Fascinating and intelligent interview. My only issue I have is underestimating Russia's dangerous potential. Remember, it was Russia that helped Syria to use chemical weapons and fight. The syrians killed more than 500,000 people. It may not be nuclear, but they engage in dirty wars. I hope it doesn't escalate.
One, M. Brennan didn't really touch much on the present ME and Gates was really clear about how Russia would act if they are let to win in Ukraine, and how he sees Xi reacting to it. Gate's has always taken public questions but he doesn't offer opinions, rather he states the facts and the clear conclusions. When asked. I'm sure he has several opinions we would all like to hear his answers to. Send Margaret an E mail- she might get another bite of this apple!
We’ll done!
He's very knowledgeable and politically sharp, "But, if they launch from Russian air space, then they have to be prepared to have the remains fall on Russia."
Thank You Margaret Brennan for a superb interview in letting Mr. Gates answer fully, and your asking insightful questions!
An intelligent interview rather than the trash talking that litters the media nowadays!
No one knows exactly how a war will end - Robert Gate.
❤ this lady minds me of Hillary?
A GOOD DEFENCE IS A GREAT OFFENCE !!!
Why is everyone scaaaared of Donald Trump
Because he has no fear and absolutely will not stop!
Government spending MUST BE PUT IN CHECK, no more HOT CHECKS
He's the same age as Biden, but he seems coherent and I can understand every word he says. Biden mumbles and slurs and it takes effort to understand or follow him
But Gates is a Republican and the Trump Base would not like him as the GOP Nominee.
Is it too late for Gates to be a Democrat?
Maybe not.
Could Gates run as a Third Party Candidate?
Only if we Amend the Constitution, to have a Run Off Election, if no one wins 270 Electoral Votes.
Otherwise, we run the risk of the Election being thrown to the House, where each State Delegation gets ONE vote!
Ironically, 2024 will be the 200th Anniversary of the last time that happened, in 1824 !
Has China ever invaded a sovereign nation? China speaks first and quietly while carrying a big stick. We strategically impeded "the string of pearls". Now our delusions of grandeur gave way to percepts over smart diplomatic-economic policy.
When discussing the Ukraine crisis, I have noticed a lack of emphasis on its root cause. I believe this oversight can be attributed to the expansion of NATO and, on a deeper level, the potential benefits some groups may gain from conflicts. With NATO's presence in Ukraine, it feels as though a machine gun is being aimed at Russia's front door.
Consider this scenario: If Mexico were to form an alliance with Russia, what actions do you think the United States would take?
Propaganda time wee :)
These people know exactly why our nation is failing. Will they ever tell the truth? No. The donor ownership of almost every aspect of our society will never be discussed as the very real problem.

According to Mr. Gates, said with a straight face, due to continuing resolutions the ability of the U.S. military (budget ~$800+) to compete with China's military (budget ~$270M) is "significantly hampered."
We do not need to allocate more money to defense. We can accomplish all goals and fulfil all defense needs (with perhaps a smaller budget than we have today) by creating much better financial tracking, allowing the military (not politicians) to decide how to spend the budget they receive, a strong project and financial oversight by a military-civilian committee, strong penalties for corruption and a complete revision on military contracts to set strict responsibilities, limitations and penalties to both military leaders and defense contractors in case of changes that impact the original contract goals. Accountability, leadership, monitoring and transparency.
WTF are you taking. Your system works? 😂😂😂 Go outside and take a walk around LA, Philadelphia, etc. I'm Polish, I visited USA in 2002 and 2003, I went there to work.I met great people there, average Americans. At that time, America was an economic paradise for me. Currently, the average Smith lives at a lower standard than the average Kowalski in Poland. Politicians have led to the erosion of the American economy and civil liberties. Eternal wars lead the country to ruin, and the recipe for this is another war, which is good for the industrial-arms complex and politicians. Added to this is the fall in value. Modern America resembles the Roman Empire in its final stage. I wish the people of the USA to become again citizens and hosts in their own country.
I agree our system of government is pathetic. To much noise to get things done.

Our relationship as a Nation to China, all I thought, was that we borrowed a ton of money from China, which is not true. I was told that China has also borrowed from us. The debt from both sides seems very complicated.
[@15:42] The United States has a strategic policy of Full Spectrum Dominance (FSD). Any move on China's to defend itself militarily is an afront to our FSD strategy. • It would be interesting to know at what point a significant enough afront to FSD be a casus belli?
Basically America said we aren’t going to provide everything to defend Ukraine without NATO doing their part. Don’t forget Germany started with 500 helmets.
Gates presided over the selection of the F-35 over the alternative, giving us the most expensive fighter jet in history with its associated faulty design problems. It's an over expensive piece of junk. In a test against an F-16, a 45 year old design, the F-16 won.
