This is so typical of today’s GOP. Using a senate mechanism (bipartisan approval of Flag officers) as a partisan tool to advance a political agenda that they know will not work, yet will ensure reelection in the dark backwater from whence they came. Sad, but so predictable from a state that values football over the nations best interest.

@@johnh4686, you know, until you & @kgetz3, I'd only heard that the newer generations are blaming & condemning Boomers for the ills of the nation. Not bothering with any introspection to determine whether anything they've done or are doing are contributing to the problem. I was in the Vietnam War for 2 years, came back brokenhearted & adamantly opposed to it. Nearly went out the bottom with a needle in my arm. Got saved by the Lord, worked as a day laborer, then welder, then went to engineering school (mechanical), designed-built energy infrastructure projects throughout the US; then for 5 years went to Russia & former Soviet Union countries to help them rebuild after the Cold War (which we won). Worked for Enron, saw the rot & left them 3 years before their collapse, warned my broker not to put anyone in the (& at the time they were the most admired Corp in the US, indeed, most of the world). Then worked catastrophic industrial accidents, rebuilding them (came in after 6 fatalities total); and now at 75 am still design-building industrial processing facilities coast-to-coast, border-to-border USA. And raised 3 great young men who have 3 wonderful wives & 10 beloved grandchildren.
To the extent I contributed to "the disastrous economic policies (of my generation)", my apologies. And very best wishes to you & your generation as y'all take your swing at the problems of the world. I think if there's anything that those disastrous policies demonstrate, it's that Americans are not fans of making painful choices. Unfortunately, as the sense of outrage & entitlement grows in this society; I doubt the next gens are any bigger fans of sacrifice.

But Robert Gates is no politician, no culture warrior- those are not bad things at all, but it would make it nearly impossible as campaign leader. Would he be a good to great US Pres? I have no doubt of it- Robert Gates has so far succeeded at every job- and he got many of them after someone else made a hash of them- like the DoD- six years of Donnie Rumsfeld had thoroughly trashed much of the DoD- Mr. Gates found most of the Puzzle Factory's pieces and got them working well again- for that he was humbly asked by Obama to stay on, which he did. It's always outstanding to listen to people like Robert Gates. I wish more people in government had as much common sense as he does. His perspective on the war in Ukraine was interesting. I totally agree with his idea that a line has to be drawn. So as to not allow other bad actors to take the same initiative, Putin did in Ukraine, to other places around the world going forward. Negotiations should always trump conflict in territorial disputes between nations. He is also right about the gerontocracy governing problem in America. Not to mention the nastiness of the discourse in our current political system. Let alone the disembowelment of our manufacturing capability. Which compromises the weaponry availability our armed forces need to fight a war in the future. Good job Mr. Secretary spot on.

Fascinating and intelligent interview. My only issue I have is underestimating Russia's dangerous potential. Remember, it was Russia that helped Syria to use chemical weapons and fight. The syrians killed more than 500,000 people. It may not be nuclear, but they engage in dirty wars. I hope it doesn't escalate.

One, M. Brennan didn't really touch much on the present ME and Gates was really clear about how Russia would act if they are let to win in Ukraine, and how he sees Xi reacting to it. Gate's has always taken public questions but he doesn't offer opinions, rather he states the facts and the clear conclusions. When asked. I'm sure he has several opinions we would all like to hear his answers to. Send Margaret an E mail- she might get another bite of this apple!

      Maybe not.
Could Gates run as a Third Party Candidate?
Only if we Amend the Constitution, to have a Run Off Election, if no one wins 270 Electoral Votes.
Otherwise, we run the risk of the Election being thrown to the House, where each State Delegation gets ONE vote!

When discussing the Ukraine crisis, I have noticed a lack of emphasis on its root cause. I believe this oversight can be attributed to the expansion of NATO and, on a deeper level, the potential benefits some groups may gain from conflicts. With NATO's presence in Ukraine, it feels as though a machine gun is being aimed at Russia's front door.
Consider this scenario: If Mexico were to form an alliance with Russia, what actions do you think the United States would take?

  • @corujariousa

We do not need to allocate more money to defense. We can accomplish all goals and fulfil all defense needs (with perhaps a smaller budget than we have today) by creating much better financial tracking, allowing the military (not politicians) to decide how to spend the budget they receive, a strong project and financial oversight by a military-civilian committee, strong penalties for corruption and a complete revision on military contracts to set strict responsibilities, limitations and penalties to both military leaders and defense contractors in case of changes that impact the original contract goals. Accountability, leadership, monitoring and transparency.

WTF are you taking. Your system works? 😂😂😂 Go outside and take a walk around LA, Philadelphia, etc. I'm Polish, I visited USA in 2002 and 2003, I went there to work.I met great people there, average Americans. At that time, America was an economic paradise for me. Currently, the average Smith lives at a lower standard than the average Kowalski in Poland. Politicians have led to the erosion of the American economy and civil liberties. Eternal wars lead the country to ruin, and the recipe for this is another war, which is good for the industrial-arms complex and politicians. Added to this is the fall in value. Modern America resembles the Roman Empire in its final stage. I wish the people of the USA to become again citizens and hosts in their own country.

Gates presided over the selection of the F-35 over the alternative, giving us the most expensive fighter jet in history with its associated faulty design problems. It's an over expensive piece of junk. In a test against an F-16, a 45 year old design, the F-16 won.
