The more important question to ask about a controversial film like Animal, or for that matter any film, is what is the filmmaker trying to say through the film. Usually this is answered towards the end of the film. What are the consequences for a problematic character. I haen't seen Animal, but if in the end you leave the film feeling - it's OK to be someone like Ranbir Kapoor and he will get redemption and that the world should be run by people like him - then the film is problematic. For example - SAIRAT - well made film - but the ending says that an inter-caste marriage will lead to abandoned children with dead parents - love did not triumph in this world. As opposed to QSQT or Ek Dujje ke liye - where both lovers die but it still leaves you with a feeling that they are together in death - their love triumphed. Also the interviewer is very dismissive. Her expressions say that because Anurag does not have the same views as her, he is so whatever. He is absolutely bang on about the Payal Kapadia thing. She was a traitor when she protested at FTII and when she wins an international award suddenly she's India shining? Also the film is funded by non-Indian companies. If you only want to take pride in something you didn't contribute towards that's hypocrisy and that's what Anurag is talking about.

Anurag ki body language is so open, speaks abouthis state of mind k he is open to conversation. On the other hand, her body language is so on the defense so closed. She is not here for conversation, she wants to be in an echo chamber, she wants to hear the same thing from Anurag that she thinks. Chalo a lady of strong character which is good but can a person not have his or her own opinions that is different from what you think ? She is thinking so binary, in right and wrong, but when everything is perspective and the parameters on what a person judges a certain thing differs from person to person, then how can answers be binary or black and white. She is of a stong character, but her poking was becoming irritating after a point just because she wanted to hear him say her own opinions.

The more important question to ask about a controversial film like Animal, or for that matter any film, is what is the filmmaker trying to say through the film. Usually this is answered towards the end of the film. What are the consequences for a problematic character. I haen't seen Animal, but if in the end you leave the film feeling - it's OK to be someone like Ranbir Kapoor and he will get redemption and that the world should be run by people like him - then the film is problematic. For example - SAIRAT - well made film - but the ending says that an inter-caste marriage will lead to abandoned children with dead parents - love did not triumph in this world. As opposed to QSQT or Ek Dujje ke liye - where both lovers die but it still leaves you with a feeling that they are together in death - their love triumphed.
Also the interviewer is very dismissive. Her expressions say that because Anurag does not have the same views as her, he is so whatever. He is absolutely bang on about the Payal Kapadia thing. She was a traitor when she protested at FTII and when she wins an international award suddenly she's India shining? Also the film is funded by non-Indian companies. If you only want to take pride in something you didn't contribute towards that's hypocrisy and that's what Anurag is talking about.
