George Bush Jr changed entrapment through the Patriot Act, and Obama eliminated habeas corpus through executive order. The left and right wings are on the same bird. I've heard Gavin tell the story of how it started and Joe got it right. The radio part I don't remember, but the rest sounds right.
I’ve heard both Anthony and Gavin talk about it and Joe’s take here sounds pretty accurate.
IIRC, while on air, Cumia and McGinnis were making fun of an intern for being preppy or looking like his mother dressed him, saying how his mother must be so proud of her boy. That eventually grew into this bit they did involving a broadway-style musical number about being a good boy with traditional western values, etc.
Eventually this grew into a joke of a social club where you had to do stupid shit to get in. Gavin and his proud boys would basically just go out drinking and doing stupid shit. At some point, someone had the bright idea that they should start showing up to conservative events being brigaded by Antfa, LGBT, BLM or other leftist activist groups in order to push back. Gavin was still involved at that point.
Obviously, we all know what happened next. They went a little too far, got a little too violent clashing with Antifa and others, and as a result, began to attract the fringes on the alt-right. It wasn’t just some joke anymore. So Gavin left.
Now they are basically a term used by the media to demonize people, right up there with calling someone a klan member or a Nazi.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Cuomo left office when he did. Better to resign because he got a little too handsy with the cute secretaries than to be forced to resign (and deservedly go to prison, not that I believe that would actually happen) because it became widespread public knowledge that he deliberately put infectious sick people into nursing bomes, resulting in the deaths of thousands of elderly people. Lots of governors did that, in fact.
