    Thanks for the intro to merino! After seeing this video, I tried merino underwear for the first time (Wool & Prince); the boxer briefs are very comfortable, but the t-shirt is taking some getting used to, after a lifetime of 100% cotton Ts. Love the channel, one aesthetic note: you might want to dial down or back the light away from your face; it's making you look a little nuclear and slightly dimmer would be more flattering. Keep up the good work!

    For the deodorant issue: Use a roll-on antiperspirant as opposed to a solid or gel. I’ve been using BAN and it hasn’t ruined any shirts yet. Even my white Ts are safe

    On deodorant I've used the crystal kind and their wipes and Tom's, Schmidt's and almost every "mainstream" natural deo but my top 3 are, Primal Pit Paste(all of theyre products are top notch and affordable & so many scents!) Green Tidings(avail. on Amazon) & finally Ursa Major(they make Excellent effective skincare products and are a little higher up in cost) check those out. The first 2 have worked for me as a woman and I know the uni-sex vibe of Ursa Major definitely have alot of male fans. Also, I'm still on the search for more womens merino clothing that is fashionable and practical.

    Huge fan of merino wool, I just wish there were more options for women. Unbound just came out with a tshirt for women, 190gsm, and I like it a lot. I've been wearing it almost everyday for the past couple weeks. I find Icebreaker to be a bit thin, and I've had two of their shirts replaced because they got holes in them after only a couple months of wear (they have the nylon core).
    I've tried the crystal deodorant, but it doesn't seem to work well for me. What I've been using for the past few years is Schmidts, and I like the stuff in the jars, not the stick. There is still a little bit of buildup, but I don't have to use that much for it to work, and the ingredients in it absorb well into the skin (stuff like shea butter).

      I feel ya with the lack of Affordable womens options with merino wool. There are some luxury brands that will do some merino but the markup for the brand name is insane. Everlane has done some really nice merino sweaters in the past. I'm a big merino fan & I find myself getting clothes for my husband, brothers, family and I may have spoiled my dad with Wool & Prince shirts over the years!

    On deodorant & merino wool; Try Once-a-Week deodorant. I've only found multiple packs on eBay. Each pack has three pouches with one wipe each. I buy 10 packs at a time now. Nice & small for traveling & backpacking, etc. You can shower & it wont wash away. I've gone 5 days without showering or changing my merino wool underwear. After 5 days, I still don't smell but I just feel grimy & oily. After I apply the wipe to my arm pits, I then use it on my crotch & feet. No staining or build-up. A little pricey, but for travel & camping, it's worth it.

    Nice review Tom. Deodorant wise, I’ve had good experiences with Nivea Men - they have two different lines (I believe) that are considered invisible, advertising anti-white marks and anti-yellow stains. In use this product has been phenomenal, specially when traveling due to its size and not needing much. Something to be aware of though, it’s difficult to find in the US but readily available in Europe and other places abroad, so I end up stocking up when I travel or ordering online. Hope that helps - if you need more info let me know.

    Hi Tom, nice review! Do you find that this 160gsm fabric is too thin that nipples will show through? Lean and athletic build here, and I was thinking about getting the W&P 100% merino in navy color, since it's 220gsm. I cannot stand nipples showing lmao. Thanks!

    • @PackHacker
      @PackHacker  5 років тому +1

      Hey logintosco - the 160gsm seems to be ok, for me personally, but of course, your mileage may vary. If we were talking about Outlier's Runweight Merino (150GSM), I'd caution you a little more regarding nipple-show-through (plus it's a tighter fit). Overall, would recommend grabbing a darker color to help with this + it's just better for travel, too.

    Good to see blends. 100% wool is too much for something that touches the sensitive upper body skin. Is that Old Spice anti-perspirant or just deodorant? If it is just deodorant you want, skip it all together and rub some hydrogen peroxide on your armpits once every two weeks or so. No odor.

    FYI... deodorants with color in them are synthetic FD&C dyes or lake dyes and are used in food and makeup, skincare and deodorants. These should be avoided because they're not natural and are a by-product of Petroleum production and each dye say Yellow 5 or red 40 all have different side effects and they mostly all contain known carcinogens or cancer causing compounds. Please do your own research! FD&C dyes are everywhere including sodas and other beverages. Take care.

    So you’re all in on the mixed fabric? I’m literally getting ready to purchase a number of shirts so this is timely. I was going to go all Merino probably from wooly but if these have the same upside but more durability it seems like a no brainer to go with these. I’ll hopefully be on the road for a year so every little choice from fabric weight, design, cost, etc is critical.
    How do they stack up (given you’ve only had this one for a while) with your wooly experiences? Since I can only afford a limited number of pieces and can’t really experiment as much as I’d like would you go wooly or does this one seem to be a better option in your mind? It’s nice they have an XS since I’m a short ass and will need to tailor any shirts I buy but the less I need to alter the more natural the fit will be.
    Great timing and any additional thoughts you’d care to share would help. :)
    Cheers,
    Christopher

      Two wool t-shirts should be plenty. Maybe try two different brands/colors and see how they stack up? I prefer Icebreaker mainly because I'm familiar with the fit and they don't change things too much, and tend to catch them on one of their 25% off sales. Wool & Prince, Outlier, and Wooly aren't generally available in stores to try/see so I've never experimented with them.

    • @Christopher-today
      @Christopher-today 5 років тому

      blondre3000 super, thank you. :)
      I’ve found icebreaker to be at the higher end of the price but they are where I’ve started. I just received their beanie and while it’s really nice I’m very thankful I have a military like crew cut and a round not very big head or it’d crush my brain. It claims 1 size fits all and it has loosened as I’ve warn it but if you had hair there’s no way it’d be comfortable. That all said it’s exactly what I wanted for me so I’m not complaining. I’ve also tried 2 types of their socks and have been pleased with the comfort and durability plus its merino specific qualities. Maybe I’ll buy 1 from Woolly, 1 from these guys and 1 from icebreaker. They all have long sleeve t-shirts which I live in so it’d be a decent test and probably worth the expense because regardless which I pick as my vendor the others can still be worn.
      Thank you for the insight. :)
      Christopher

    • @PackHacker

      Hey Christopher - I'm not sure we can be "all in" on blended fabrics without more testing (like a year or two) but so far so good 🙂. If you're tailoring your shirts, that's great - the Wool and Prince (at least medium) seems to be a little longer than other shirts. Definitely check out Outlier as well (we have a couple reviews on the site).
      I'd agree with blondre3k to grab a couple from each brand to test & experiment what's right for you. It's cool to have multiple brands with you on your trip as well.
      After traveling for nearly 2 years with 4 shirts, I'd take 2-3 instead.
      Hope this helps and have a great trip!

    • @Christopher-today
      @Christopher-today 5 років тому

      Hey Tom,
      Really helpful, thank you. I love the outlier stuff and may use them for pants (still deciding) but damn they’re so expensive they make icebreaker shirts look inexpensive. :s
      I think I’ll try a long & short from woolly plus the Wool & Prince. I was probably going to overpack given your shirt # advice. Knowing I only need 2 or 3 makes things easier. My thought is 2 long & 2 short t-shirts (though I prefer long sleeve 99% of the time unless where I’m going they just don’t work) and 2 polo shirts. I’m packing a dress shirt or 2 but since I hopefully won’t need to wear them very much I’m just going to go with made to measure shirts from Indochino because they fit perfect while off the shelf dress shirts are too hard to tailor. My next big decision is pants. I’m thinking 2 pair of travel shorts, 2 pair of everyday travel pants plus 1 dressier style pant but still optimized for travel (I’ll be working while travelling or that’s the plan). I may swap one travel pant for a good old made to measure pair of jeans though - still deciding but I think this’ll be my toughest decision. Oh I’m also picking up one of the just released Unbound Merino Travel Hoodies. I’m a Canadian and love the idea of supporting a Canadian company but they don’t have long sleeve t-shirts in grey (my colour). For the feet my main shoe/boot is the MACV-1 from GoRuck (these things are amazing. Basically a combat boot that feels and weighs the same as a pair of high end running shoes) and a pair of wool runners (I’m waiting on a pair I bought via indiegogo from Tropicfeel but may need to buy a different pair. We’ll see how they are when they arrive). Finally I may pack a pair of dress loafers for when I need to dress up but I’m really debating on this one...
      Still too much stuff? All I know is I want to carry nothing bigger than a 30 litre bag but hoping I can get away with my 24 litre Bento Bag. I think I can make it all fit given how light and compact the travel stuff is but I won’t know till I try and pack stuff as I buy it pre-trip.

      @@Christopher-today - Hey Christopher! Wow quite the list going here! For a 24-30L bag, you may want to either increase the size of your bag, or decrease the items you're packing (just a gut feel, not entirely sure how it will all net out without seeing it in person!). If you were looking to combine in certain areas, you could consider 1 pair of the Outlier Futureworks to combine the "other" pair of pants with the "work" pants. Would love to get our hands on the GORUCK MACV-1s as well, however, those things are pretty big, right? Likely best worn or hung outside your pack when not in use vs trying to pack them in. And sounds good on the Canadian Unbound Sweatshirt! They've been making some moves lately and we're excited to get our hands on their updated gear. Would love to hear your thoughts on Tropicfeel too. We're in the process of getting a pair for Nathan to test.
      It can all take a little bit of experimentation to get everything right. I'd recommend packing a bag with what you have now to start to get a feel for how much you can fit! We also have a video coming out on Thursday that I think you could derive some value from.
      Enjoy the journey of optimizing your pack and better yet, the trip itself!

    Deodorant solution: stop using it. Use a small amount of baking soda (damp finger tip's worth) after showering (or just wash your underarms with a little soap every day or so) to reduce odor. There's really nothing you can (or should) do about sweat, but that's not the problem anyway.
