When I was 6 years old back in 1976 my great grandfather handed me a Hawaiian sling he made back in the 1890s as my first spear fishing adventure began - I progressed to the point of blue water hunter before UA-cam show divers spearfishing Mahi-mahi ahi and any fish in the Deep Blue
A great story and thank for sharing with me. Many spearguns, if taken care of, can be handed down to each new generation of divers with stories and experiences like yours. Take care.
We used door hinges for triggers. We made them before every trip to the beach. They would break all the time so you needed to take spares guns. Das how!
Thanks Alec! I made one a couple of weeks ago and need to put a leash on it. Have been going out with a pole spear, but the fish seem to know how far away to be out of my reach
That was my problem many, many years ago in the stone age of diving. That's why I make longer and longer spearguns. Then I got faster spearguns (air powered), then really fast ones (shoots blanks!), then another and another. You know how this ends... A
Cool. Thanks. I am pretty sure the phallic shape was intended. 8:04 That piece of wood on the mantel looks like the leg of a bed (turned sideways). Do you know what it was? It could obviously be from a piece of a house, but it is odd. Maybe near a stair, or some random area that needed a special piece. edit: Oh yeah... I am making one these Hawaiian Slings today. This video was very helpful. Thank You! That last one is Awesome. I think I'll do something like that.
Don't know what wooden piece you mean, nothing I remember like this but I put so many nick-naks there who knows. Glad to help get your first sling started and good luck hunting.
@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter Sorry, I meant "THE " Mantel, not "ON" the mantel. That big piece of hand hewn lumber over the fireplace. I am an architect and I like interesting architectural/structural pieces from the past. If it is from mainland USA, I would say it is pre-1900, because structurally, it isn't done quite right, as they did it back then. If it is Hawaiian, it could be from anytime, but probably pre-1950.
I tried today in a shallow river. Pretty bad the arrow is just too heavy with gravity holding it. It's possible but throwing a spear will do the same if it's a good spear depending on skill.
Fin question went diving at mark Twain Lake with new cressi fins my foot size is 9.5 I have mares boots the fit was good on land no adjustment left nice and tight but I lost one fin just came off and sank poor vis in this lake I like these fins any suggestions on fins with boots just need to strap it tighter but no more adjustment Thanks jared rrrrrr Oh ya need to dive to find my sunglasses 600$ glasses in 40 foot of water at the dock lol
I have lost lots of fins over the years Jared, thats why I love my Seawing Nova's, they float! Watch my video on hookah diving then go looking for them under the dock. Dive safe. Alec

Thank you.
We used that before but with bamboo. Filipino sniper sling
There are many, many similar spearguns. I saw one the other day made from a few pieces of PVC water pipe.
Take care.
Alec
Reminds me of the dad from that 70s show, Red I think he was called✌️
Oh yes, the great Red Foreman, funny guy just like me!

On 8:15 what is look like?
A hawaiian sling of course.

How do these perform out of water?
Nothing like the these have range underwater.

Sorry to hear that Jared. Great thing about scuba diving is you will probably find a fin on your next dive.
Thanks for watching.

yeah the nova are great fins (I have 2) thanks to your video/review. Sold all the others and splits fins, etc... much better.
Very unfortunate shape of the US divers sling!
Maybe funny for us today, but way back then, nobody blinked at its shape (or poor grip).
Thanks for watching.
Alec,
@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunterno one saw the resemblence? Keep up the good work alec!
