  • Uploaded in commemoration of Judy Garland's 93rd birthday!
The unused "swing" version of one of Judy's signature songs (and coincidentally, the song that got her a contract at MGM studios) recorded and eventually dropped from the film 'Listen, Darling'; recorded on 16 September, 1938 at MGM studios.

Stunning young voice--great swing version at 1:52. Judy's instincts as a child were amazing...love you, love you!

Agreed 100 %... Well... she was genius.. but her vocal arrangements was at the time of the recording- so to speak- eased and a bit polished by her the then vocal teacher and arranger Roger Edens; also he was instrumental for many many Judy's stage and movie performances. Roger along with Arthur Freed composed and wrote lyrics of Judy's iconic Our love affair song... They both remained great friends for life...

She slides into the swing version with NO effort! Amazing at only 16 years old.

If she would have had the opportunity to perform with more of the jazz artists of her day, I believe she would have only added to her already amazing vocal skills.

Fascinating is the contrast between this heaven-bound singing by this young girl and the down to earth, almost unpleasant sound of the men shouting out info to one another afterward.

Judy would have made a wonderful jazz singer... if they had let her do it that way... She could have sung everything equally marvelously. But the popular music prevailed in her enormous amazing repertoire.
    Thank Heavens !!!
Well... Popular music those days means classical Judy style nowadays. Legendary beauty.... Thanks a lot for the gem...

@@orangepulp392 Me too lol. Maybe it's the number of the movie, itself? The studio's 2002nd production?

It's kind of the reference/administration number to that particular song. There would be a Daily Music Report typed up for each recording session at MGM that listed out the songs recorded and which "takes" were to be kept for possible use in the film. So this one might read 2002 - Zing Went the Strings of my Heart - Take 4 / 2002 - Zing Went the Strings of my Heart - Take 6. If she recorded another song the same day it would be 2003 - Name of Song - Take 3 and so on. Not entirely sure where the numbering system came from but the numbering always begins with 20..
